Nursing Staffing Ratio
Kaelyn,
Thank you for addressing nursing staffing ratio's. It is very interesting to me how nursing is the most
respected profession, rated in the top 10 professions, and yet there is constant talk about "a nursing
shortage". Constringent nursing staffing support for patient care is not recognized or addressed
enough! Ultimately, jeopardizing patient care for what price?
From my personal experience in the hospital setting staffing was definitely more supported in
inpatient rather than now in the clinic ambulatory settings. Staffing ratios in inpatient settings is
often justified for the number of patients on a unit, however acuity is often not part of the equation.
In reviewing, the journal article, Transparency and accountability in nurse

Nurse Staffing
Presented in the nursing study, Nursing activities, nurse staffing and adverse patient outcomes as
perceived by hospital nurses, the research gives evidence that indicates nurse staffing levels can
have direct effect on patient care. Therefore, in correlation to the question and point of study, the
research pointed at the fact that inadequate staffing and unrealistic workloads place an burden on
nursing staff, reducing the quality of care that nurses are able to provide. The patient–to–nurse ratio
averaged 8.74:1 overall within the nurses involved in the study. The study took RNs' evaluations of
whether they had enough time to perform the listed nursing tasks and created a table. In the table, it
showed more than a quarter of RNs expressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike the first article discussed, this study was created to consider the patients point of view. The
study considers unit organizational factors (e.g. nurse–to–bed ratio, skill mix) with patient access to
support. Data analysis and results show staffing levels showed a positive association with patient
access to support. On the other hand, the availability of support deteriorated when the number of
emergency inpatients and the unit workload increased. Patients' perceived access to support was also
associated with the number of hours worked by Registered Nurses on the inpatient unit; the higher
the proportion of hours worked by Registered Nurses, the higher the score for perceived access to
support on the dimensions of respectful interaction and access to information. Furthermore, nurses'
mean professional experience correlated positively with patient access to support: the longer this
experience, the more patients felt they had access to support in their care. Nonetheless the data
shows patients do sense it when staffs are pressed for time and may therefore side with staff
members when assessing their access to

Assistive Staffing
Staffing is an important part of management and leadership. Anyone in the work force can
appreciate and understand the importance of adequate staffing and scheduling. This is needed in
order to meet daily unit needs and organizational goals. It is ultimately the managers' responsibility
to make sure that there is adequate staffing at all times. Whether it is centralized staffing, a central
office making the schedule, or decentralized staffing, unit managers making the schedule, differs
between institutions. Managers must keep in mind staffing mandates. "Many states in the United
States, with the backing of professional nursing organizations, have moved toward imposing
mandatory licensed staffing requirements, and one state (California) has enacted legislation
requiring mandatory staffing ratios" (Marquis & Huston, 2012). Currently in New York, there are no
mandatory staffing ratios. Another important concept is the relationship between nursing care hours
and staffing mix. In order to cut costs, staffing models have reduced RN representation in the
staffing mix and increased the use of unlicensed assistive personnel. Reviews of current literature
suggests that as RN hours decrease and UAP increase, adverse patient outcomes ... Show more

Although conflict can be good at times, leading to change instead of promoting stasis, too much
conflict can reduce organizational effectiveness with eventual immobilization of employees
(Marquis & Huston, 2012). It is the job of the manager to effectively handle conflict. The manager
is also responsible to oversee how well employees are carrying out the duties of their assigned jobs.
This can be done through performance appraisals. Performance appraisals let employees know the
level of their job performance as well as future expectations and improvements. It allows
management to recognize the developmental needs of its

Canadian Staffing Techniques
If you want to start a staffing firm successfully, you'll want to keep abreast of technological
developments in the industry. Why is this important, you might ask? Well, it's about efficiency. To
consistently grow your client base and network, you'll need the right tools to deliver proficient,
ongoing customer service. You'll need the best data to inform your placements and business
decisions. And you'll need the right tech to reduce redundancies and improve efficacy.
We've gathered five new technologies that are essential to the Canadian staffing industry.
1. Automated Resume Screening
Your recruiters have many tasks to perform on any given day in your firm–tasks that are both
necessary and time consuming. Resume screening is one such example. ... Show more content on

While they aren't exactly mainstream yet or a replacement for the good old human touch in the
recruitment process, chatbots stand a good chance of maximizing time management and resources.
4. Natural Language Processing
Natural language processing is a technology that, like machine learning, has the ability to make your
candidate database more diverse. To succeed in the staffing industry, you need to avoid biased
recruitment practices, like writing job descriptions that use gender–biased language, for example.
What natural language processing does is analyze the language in your job posting descriptions and
suggest alternative phrasing for any words or terms that might be potentially biased. Revising your
job descriptions with such a technology can lead to a more diverse talent pool, which in turn
improves your employer branding.
5. End–to–End Recruitment Management
Since the gig economy has really fired up Canadian staffing efforts in 2017, end–to–end recruitment
management has become vital. Back office paperwork and compliance can be the bane of a new
staffing firm, which is why agencies are partnering with admin experts who provide all–in–one
proprietary software and ongoing consulting and back–office management to integrate

Staffing History
History:
Staffing and management has certainly evolved of the last 100 years. Form the 1900's to this turn of
the century, there have been many changes in the way staffing, management, and public service is
handle by administrators, directors, and officials. When the public service system was first viewed a
major issue, most employees and employers had to only worry about the necessities of living and
have the proper compensation for everyday life. Over time different events have happened the have
set people back such as The Great Depression, Wars, and even The Recession. These things over this
100 year span has had a major influence on the way management, staffing, and the public service
system is conducted. Over the past ten years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rapid growth of women and minorities within the U.S. labor force; however, equally important
is the fact that the labor force is becoming tighter and more competitive at a time when the number
of employees eligible for retirement is rapidly increasing due to the aging of the Baby Boomer
generation. Some have referred to these trends as the basis for a "crisis" in human capital if public
sector employers are not able to recruit new talent into the public labor force to replace those who
intend to retire in the near future.4 This "crisis" is especially evident at the federal level. (Klinger,
Nalbandian, Llorens 2010) Over time these challenges will only get harder because of the increase
in the population as well as other aspects that have a negative effect on public workforce. Unless a
booming number of jobs open with less requirements, there will always be a challenge in the
workforce. This is way it is important to get an education with credentials behind you to help
solidify your position in the working economy. The one thing people can't take away from you I
knowledge that you have attained. Whether is school or special training, having the necessities to

Safe Staffing In Nursing
Florence Nightingale has been the pioneer in nursing and she also was an advocate for the sick. It
was her devotion and persistence that led her write "Notes on Nursing (1860/1969), in which she set
forth the basic premises on which nursing practice should be based and articulated the proper
functions of nursing." (Chinn & Kramer, 2011, p. 27). Florence views and wisdom are still
applicable in today's age as per Chinn and Kramer (2011). Florence believed the need for clean
facilities and appropriate setting for caring for patients. (Chinn and Kramer, 2011, p. 27). In keeping
with her love for caring and appropriate environment the topic of safe staffing comes in to play.
Morality
According to Chinn and Kramer moral/morality are conducts that elicit good and right actions. (p.
251). Hamilton stipulates that nurses can join Nurses Associations, get involved with a cause
without compromising their values. (Hamilton, 2014, p. 5). In Hamilton's article she is proactive to
the fact that safe staffing is a moral value. Patients are entitled to safe and quality care. An unsettled
agenda is nurses need to render the appropriate care they are capable of giving. Ethics goes hand in
hand with morality.
There's multitude of articles addressing the dilemma of safe nursing and its breach of quality and
safety in patient care. Previous to 2014 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported on two ground–
breaking studies, Arriess referred to: "To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System and
Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century" (2014, p. 3), ... Show

Strategic Staffing
Abstract
Strategic staffing is a very important aspect of an organization as it will influence the success of the
business. When developing strategies for implementing staffing, a lot of things have to be taken into
consideration such as globalization. Managers have to ensure that staffing strategies are linked to the
overall business strategy so that the right persons are hired for the job in question. Managers have to
also ensure that the persons carrying out the task of hiring the individual understands the overall
strategy of the business in order to avoid subjective decision making. Once employers understand
the importance of strategic staffing, they can aligning their departmental goals with that of the
company and spend adequate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
11).
Another critical issue that was revealed in the article was the tendency of decision makers to make
changes only to respond to immediate pressures instead of realigning the organization with its
external environment. This type of behaviour is being reactive, when the company should be
seeking to be proactive. Being proactive means that situations are controlled by causing things to
happen instead of waiting to respond after things happen. It follows through with the ancient saying,
"Prevention is better than cure". This is crucial to any organization's success because being proactive
saves money. Instead of management making a staff change to respond to immediate pressures, they
should ensure that the persons they are hiring are able to implement the strategies of the
organization effectively.
The failure of a newly promoted leader to perform effectively is another critical issue that was raised
in the article. The author went on to explain that the problem maybe a weakness in the strategy that
affected the personnel changes and staffing should be seen as a window of opportunity other than a
burden.
With these critical issues that need to be considered when developing strategies for strategic
staffing, there are also some areas of concern that was presented in the article that also needs to be
considered

Niche Staffing
The staffing industry is getting more and more crowded as the economy is showing signs of life. To
make the most of the opportunities, many staffing agencies are focusing on one or two niches like
construction, legal, information technology or medical care. A niche staffing agency has a deeper
understanding of the particular industry, making them more attractive to companies within that
niche. This helps build a pool of talented, reliable employees that can be trusted by both the agency
and its clients.
Despite these advantages, there are certain challenges with niche staffing. Cash flow can become a
real issue, especially when an agency is ready to grow. Keeping the cash flow smooth can free up
funds for hiring more staff and taking on more clients. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many staffing agencies make the mistake of making their niche too narrow. Offering staffing for the
healthcare industry is a well–defined niche with plenty of room for growth. However, going too
narrow can end up killing cash flows and, ultimately, the business. Too narrow a niche means there
are fewer clients available, which limits the amount of staff the agency can hire and use. Having
more than one niche or widening a niche is a better option.
Go with your niche's expected payment terms. For example, most staffing agencies have a standard
30–day invoice payment term. But, in the medical field, that can stretch out to 60–days. If you try to
impose a 30–day payment term in the medical niche, you may find your agency on the outs with
clients. And once you get an unfavorable reputation within a niche market, you may never

This study uses nurse staffing variables, patient outcome variables, and background variables. The
nurse staffing variables will involve the number of nurses to skill mix and patient volume. Patient
outcome variables will be categorized into infection control, patient safety, subjective and objective
outcomes, and complications. The background variables are important to accurate correlation and
may relate to both patient outcome and nurse staffing and will include organizational systems, nurse
characteristics, patient characteristics, and organizational characteristics.

managers, a corporate committee determined that an ideal solution would require an organization–
wide shift to a more detailed selection system. The interview process has been deemed "essential"
by most managers, and they are resistant to anything that would modify the interview process. As a
result, approximately one year ago the staffing services department initiated a search for good
predictors of sales associate performance that would create minimal additional administrative
burdens for managers. In the course of this search a number of new methods were brought to the
organization's attention. All of the materials described in this section are presented in Appendix C.

Safe Nurse Staffing and Patient Outcomes Regina Valenzuela Northern Arizona University Abstract
Proper nurse staffing has been a debate since the modernization of nursing for many years. This
paper examines the results of five researched based articles on the effects of nurse staffing and the
outcomes of patient care within a hospital setting. The articles do vary in their methods of gathering
information. One study used organizational data from 799 facilitates in eleven states to examine the
outcomes of care from the type of nursing care received (Needleman, Buerhaus, Mattke, Stewart,

Despite its inclusion of additional team members of a facility, the study does suggest that that there
is a direct correlation between fewer nurses to higher patient mortality (West, Barron, Harrison,
Rafferty, Rowan, & Sanderson). The study that examined the organizational data from 799
facilities in eleven states states that they found a congruous amount evidence that there was a
relationship between higher levels of staffing by registered nurses and lower rates of adverse patient
outcomes (Needleman, Buerhaus, Mattke, Stewart, & Zelevinsky, 2002). This study did not
find similar evidence between licensed practical nurses or assistants. The study that examined
specific determinants in relationship to adverse effects and negative patient outcomes revealed that
there are many factors that contribute to negative and positive patient outcomes (Tourangeau,
Cranley, & Jeffs, 2006) In this study, they find that better registered nurse staffing, high nurse
autonomy, more years of nurse experience, strong leadership and support, baccalaureate educated
nurses, and active involvement in hospital affairs have resulted in a decreased patient mortality rate
(Tourangeau, et. al. 2006). Four of the mentioned studies did conclude in varying fashions that more
registered nurses to patients did achieve better patient outcomes. The four studies did also conclude

A 2014 research study conducted by Debra C. Hairr, Helen Salisbury, Mark Johannson, and Nancy

The economic impact on healthcare has taken its toll on the reduced number of registered nurses
providing direct bedside care to patients compromising patient safety and dramatically increasing
the potential for negative outcomes. Studies reveal that several other factors have also played a key
role concerning nursing shortages over the years, such as healthcare organizations downsizing,
reduced reimbursements, increased workloads, inadequate staffing plans and job dissatisfaction.
Currently, mandated minimum nurse–to–patient staffing ratios have been implemented in several
states with many more trying to pass some type of legislation (Chapman et al.331). In other states

To make matters worse, an aging workforce is contributing to the nursing shortages, with hundreds
of thousands of nurses over the age of fifty, and forty–seven being the average nurse's age in the
United States (Gordon, Buchanan, and Bretherton 76). According to Suzanne Gordon, whether
young or old, nurses are disillusioned because they believe that health care systems guided by
bottom–line concerns simply don't recognize the specificity of their work (234). Nursing is more
demanding than many other professions or occupations, as a result of the combination of sicker
patients, exhausting schedules and arduous physical work (Gordon 235). It can take a significant
emotional toll on many, hence the higher levels of depression and stress–related illnesses (Gordon,
Buchanan, and Bretherton 190). Higher workloads not only were related to burnout, but also
impacted both the nurses' and the patients' safety (Gordon, Buchanan, and Bretherton 191).
Job dissatisfaction as a result of insurmountable workloads and unreasonable demands, such as
inappropriate nurse staffing levels, was cited as the number one reason that drove many experienced
nurses to leave the profession (Sanford 38). The results of a 2006 survey of nurses who held the
same job between 2003 and 2006, concluded that the three most frequently reported reasons of
workload increase were: additional administrative responsibilities,

US Military I am familiar with the Infantry and Cavalry division of the military structure and how to
make this division of the US government functional is of crucial importance. First, by the very
definition, the infantry and cavalry division of military service personnel requires a special mindset.
It requires a person who understands that their life as well as others will be in a dangerous state and
at any stage of conflict that has to be a mindset that the individual will be comfortable with.

The recruiting aspect is definitely made more efficient through product and proven ways of
marketing, but our process will take things a step further. We will need to make sure that after we
have a recruit, again that this is the person that is going to fall in line with what we are ultimately
trying to get accomplished. We will put jobs in individual categories. What I mean by this statement
is that though we are looking for people who are going to be infantry and cavalry ready, we also are
going to have different roles in the structure of the unit. While we have some people who are much
more hands on and like to learn by doing, we also are going to have people who will not necessarily
be as hands– on but can do a good job of leading by thinking through issues. This is going to be the
basic structure of the group, and with this two types of structures, we will be able to categorize any
job in a blanket way to fall into these areas. We will use the recruiting process overall along with
testing and background to encourage the recruits to take their careers in the direction that not only
will be in our best interest, but also in theirs as well.
Operations The operations side of the unit will be ultimate responsible for making sure the overall
business side of things are running efficiently and effectively

School Staffing
I wanted to ask about another potential schedule change I was considering making, I just wanted to
make sure it wouldn't affect my admission chances.
For the last month or so, I've been at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital instead of school.
This was because I having trouble coping with my anger/stress, and I let the negative aspects of my
life bring down the positive aspects, basically making my whole life appear negative rather than just
certain parts. The program at Alexian Brothers had me go to their hospital everyday instead of
attending school to work on getting better. I was given one hour of school–work time a day, and I
used it to my advantage. It was no nearly enough time to get all the school work done I was missing
being at Alexian Brothers rather than school, but I made the best of it.
After my month or so of program, I returned to school, just a few days ago. I had my school staffing
meeting on first day back to school (a checkup meeting with the school nurse, liaison, counselor,
dean, and a few other people of importance to see if I've made progress at Alexian Brothers and that
I'm ready to come back to school). They all agreed I was more than ready to come back to school,
and were glad with how much work I had gotten done considering my limited time. They were just

Staffing Ratio In Icu
Patients in the ICU can also be impacted negatively by P/Ns at the level of infections on the unit.
Aycan et al. discusses how NIs are linked to mortality and morbidity in the ICU. When a patient
develops an infection, they are likely to stay longer in the hospital, which increases overall costs to
the hospital and to the patient. The article claims that there is evidence that supports that long LOS
in hospitals affect the country's economy more than the staff's salaries. Thus, since the research
found an association between P/Ns and an increased risk for NIs (which, ultimately lead to a longer
LOS) there needs to be a mandatory, as well as adequate, staffing ratio in the ICU to keep patient's
healthy and to keep costs down in the long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though, it is stated that finding enough nurses to fulfill this increased need likely would not be
challenging. In fact, nursing is the most populated career throughout the realm of healthcare. It is
recommended that reviewing staffing ratios in the ICU is necessary to lessen negative patient
outcomes and ultimately, making a change in policy (2014). Furthermore, California is the first and
only state that has set regulations and laws a nursing to patio ratio that must be met throughout all
units and at all times in their hospitals (Dorning, 2011). Aiken conducted a study in order to
conclude how the state's implications for standardized nursing ratios compare to two other states
(New Jersey and Pennsylvania) without policies regarding staffing in units, such as the ICU. Aiken
surveyed over 22,000 registered nurses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. Aiken found
that California's ratios in their units resulted in fewer mortalities during a 30–day period than in
New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This was likely due to the fact that California nurses cared for, on
average, about one less patient than the other two states surveyed. California hospitals also tended to
respond to abnormal symptoms in their patients more often than in the comparable states. This
means that once patients began to show signs that demonstrate a notable change in their baseline,

Nurse Staffing: Does One Size Fit All?
Iva Roach
Abstract
Two major forms of staffing guidelines will be discussed, nurse–to–patient ratio and staffing by
acuity. This paper will discuss the history of each staffing form. It will point out the benefits and
negative features of both practices, describe how hospitals deal with staffing and discuss the states
that have laws requiring certain guidelines be followed.

Their acuity score is much lower than a patient in the intensive care unit or a step–down unit.
Healthcare systems that utilize staffing by acuity are looking at the safe number of certain levels of
patients that one nurse can care for. The down side to staffing by acuity is that many feel
administration will influence numbers to maintain a high number of patients per nurse. If all patients
on a unit were a level eight then most acuity systems would call for three patients to one nurse but if
all patients on a unit were all level ones then a nurse could be caring for as many as eight to ten
patients. Acuity does not take every patient encounter into consideration. For instance a dementia
patient may have a low acuity based on the nursing care since they usually do not have indwelling
lines or invasive procedures. Although the same patient may require a high amount help with
activities of daily living, decision making and education. (Walsh, 2003) Thus staffing by acuity can
be a subjective form of nurse staffing. When done accurately, acuity based staffing can be very
beneficial for the nursing staff. Illinois is one of many states that have implemented laws requiring
hospitals to base staffing on acuity systems and then report compliance on a quarterly basis. Illinois
Hospital Association supports acuity based staffing over nurse–to–patient ratios. (Anonymous.

Situational theories propose that leaders choose the best course of action based on the situational

Planning Presentations
Sales presentations should be simple not overwhelming with information a customer may not be
able to remember. The goal of a sales presentation is to sell a solution to a customer, that solution
being the product or service of the salesperson. A presentation must be relevant, make a connection
with the product and the prospect, be to point, use showmanship, be animated, use physical
demonstration, and belief in the product.
In a team–selling environment, one person could give the presentation, one could answer questions,
or however the team decides to set up the presentation. The one thing that should not happen is each
person give there own presentation on the same product; do not confuse the customer. All team
members should be clear on roles and responsibilities. A team should always be together so all
members give the same answers and information to the customer.

The decision to control how an organization uses temporary labor – or perhaps more accurately,
staffing providers – is typically one born of a desire to eliminate redundancy and improve the cost
efficiency of using temporary workers as a part of the workforce. The need to determine a way to
better manage temporary staff procurement is frequently revealed by a series of events that highlight
that the company is using what feels like an unreasonable number of staffing providers.
We use the term "feel" because for many, moving from distributed control to centralized control
begins as a subjective realization that there is not as much order as there should be. In other words,

no experience with children. During the first week of school she left two students in the cafeteria
and shut my daughters fingers inside of the classroom door. She often yelled at the students and had
no patience with them. This caused disruptions within the room and caused several students
including my daughter to drop out of the program. Although her behavior was reported on several
different occasions she kept her job until the end of the school year due to lack of applications. The
lack of training and inability to handle young children on the assistant teacher's part caused great

Safe Staffing
Safe staffing has been a big problem for many years, especially in emergency departments, but not
much has been done about it. Wolf, Perhats, Delao, Clark and Moon (2017) attempt to figure out
what emergency department nurses feel are the biggest things affecting safe staffing and what they
can do to fix it. They also discuss the effects of unsafe staffing on both patients and emergency
department nurses.
Literature Summary Wolf, Perhats, Delao, Clark and Moon (2017) set out to discover what current
nurses in the emergency department thought were the biggest factors that influenced the safety of
staff and their patients. They also worked to determine ways that could potentially fix this problem
by figuring out what positively and negatively affected the safety of the nurses' workload. A big part
of safe staffing levels is the nurse to patient ratio, which is unfortunately not mandated by
department in most states. This contributes to a lot of problems in the short and long term. While a
set nurse to patient ratio would likely help worth the safe staffing issue, other things like patient
acuity and patient volume need to be considered as well. According to Wolf et al., (2017) safe

The benefit of utilizing social media recruitment is the leverage that this mechanism has over

Nursing Staffing Ratio

  • 1. Nursing Staffing Ratio Kaelyn, Thank you for addressing nursing staffing ratio's. It is very interesting to me how nursing is the most respected profession, rated in the top 10 professions, and yet there is constant talk about "a nursing shortage". Constringent nursing staffing support for patient care is not recognized or addressed enough! Ultimately, jeopardizing patient care for what price? From my personal experience in the hospital setting staffing was definitely more supported in inpatient rather than now in the clinic ambulatory settings. Staffing ratios in inpatient settings is often justified for the number of patients on a unit, however acuity is often not part of the equation. • 5. Nurse Staffing Presented in the nursing study, Nursing activities, nurse staffing and adverse patient outcomes as perceived by hospital nurses, the research gives evidence that indicates nurse staffing levels can have direct effect on patient care. Therefore, in correlation to the question and point of study, the research pointed at the fact that inadequate staffing and unrealistic workloads place an burden on nursing staff, reducing the quality of care that nurses are able to provide. The patient–to–nurse ratio averaged 8.74:1 overall within the nurses involved in the study. The study took RNs' evaluations of whether they had enough time to perform the listed nursing tasks and created a table. In the table, it showed more than a quarter of RNs expressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike the first article discussed, this study was created to consider the patients point of view. The study considers unit organizational factors (e.g. nurse–to–bed ratio, skill mix) with patient access to support. Data analysis and results show staffing levels showed a positive association with patient access to support. On the other hand, the availability of support deteriorated when the number of emergency inpatients and the unit workload increased. Patients' perceived access to support was also associated with the number of hours worked by Registered Nurses on the inpatient unit; the higher the proportion of hours worked by Registered Nurses, the higher the score for perceived access to support on the dimensions of respectful interaction and access to information. Furthermore, nurses' mean professional experience correlated positively with patient access to support: the longer this experience, the more patients felt they had access to support in their care. Nonetheless the data shows patients do sense it when staffs are pressed for time and may therefore side with staff members when assessing their access to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Assistive Staffing Staffing is an important part of management and leadership. Anyone in the work force can appreciate and understand the importance of adequate staffing and scheduling. This is needed in order to meet daily unit needs and organizational goals. It is ultimately the managers' responsibility to make sure that there is adequate staffing at all times. Whether it is centralized staffing, a central office making the schedule, or decentralized staffing, unit managers making the schedule, differs between institutions. Managers must keep in mind staffing mandates. "Many states in the United States, with the backing of professional nursing organizations, have moved toward imposing mandatory licensed staffing requirements, and one state (California) has enacted legislation requiring mandatory staffing ratios" (Marquis & Huston, 2012). Currently in New York, there are no mandatory staffing ratios. Another important concept is the relationship between nursing care hours and staffing mix. In order to cut costs, staffing models have reduced RN representation in the staffing mix and increased the use of unlicensed assistive personnel. Reviews of current literature suggests that as RN hours decrease and UAP increase, adverse patient outcomes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although conflict can be good at times, leading to change instead of promoting stasis, too much conflict can reduce organizational effectiveness with eventual immobilization of employees (Marquis & Huston, 2012). It is the job of the manager to effectively handle conflict. The manager is also responsible to oversee how well employees are carrying out the duties of their assigned jobs. This can be done through performance appraisals. Performance appraisals let employees know the level of their job performance as well as future expectations and improvements. • 13. Canadian Staffing Techniques If you want to start a staffing firm successfully, you'll want to keep abreast of technological developments in the industry. Why is this important, you might ask? Well, it's about efficiency. To consistently grow your client base and network, you'll need the right tools to deliver proficient, ongoing customer service. You'll need the best data to inform your placements and business decisions. And you'll need the right tech to reduce redundancies and improve efficacy. We've gathered five new technologies that are essential to the Canadian staffing industry. 1. Automated Resume Screening Your recruiters have many tasks to perform on any given day in your firm–tasks that are both necessary and time consuming. Resume screening is one such example. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While they aren't exactly mainstream yet or a replacement for the good old human touch in the recruitment process, chatbots stand a good chance of maximizing time management and resources. 4. Natural Language Processing Natural language processing is a technology that, like machine learning, has the ability to make your candidate database more diverse. To succeed in the staffing industry, you need to avoid biased recruitment practices, like writing job descriptions that use gender–biased language, for example. What natural language processing does is analyze the language in your job posting descriptions and suggest alternative phrasing for any words or terms that might be potentially biased. Revising your job descriptions with such a technology can lead to a more diverse talent pool, which in turn improves your employer branding. 5. End–to–End Recruitment Management Since the gig economy has really fired up Canadian staffing efforts in 2017, end–to–end recruitment management has become vital. Back office paperwork and compliance can be the bane of a new staffing firm, which is why agencies are partnering with admin experts who provide all–in–one proprietary software and ongoing consulting and back–office management to integrate ... Form the 1900's to this turn of the century, there have been many changes in the way staffing, management, and public service is handle by administrators, directors, and officials. When the public service system was first viewed a major issue, most employees and employers had to only worry about the necessities of living and have the proper compensation for everyday life. Over time different events have happened the have set people back such as The Great Depression, Wars, and even The Recession. These things over this 100 year span has had a major influence on the way management, staffing, and the public service system is conducted. Over the past ten years ... The rapid growth of women and minorities within the U.S. labor force; however, equally important is the fact that the labor force is becoming tighter and more competitive at a time when the number of employees eligible for retirement is rapidly increasing due to the aging of the Baby Boomer generation. Some have referred to these trends as the basis for a "crisis" in human capital if public sector employers are not able to recruit new talent into the public labor force to replace those who intend to retire in the near future.4 This "crisis" is especially evident at the federal level. (Klinger, Nalbandian, Llorens 2010) Over time these challenges will only get harder because of the increase in the population as well as other aspects that have a negative effect on public workforce. Unless a booming number of jobs open with less requirements, there will always be a challenge in the workforce. This is way it is important to get an education with credentials behind you to help solidify your position in the working economy. • 21. Safe Staffing In Nursing Florence Nightingale has been the pioneer in nursing and she also was an advocate for the sick. It was her devotion and persistence that led her write "Notes on Nursing (1860/1969), in which she set forth the basic premises on which nursing practice should be based and articulated the proper functions of nursing." (Chinn & Kramer, 2011, p. 27). Florence views and wisdom are still applicable in today's age as per Chinn and Kramer (2011). Florence believed the need for clean facilities and appropriate setting for caring for patients. (Chinn and Kramer, 2011, p. 27). In keeping with her love for caring and appropriate environment the topic of safe staffing comes in to play. Morality According to Chinn and Kramer moral/morality are conducts that elicit good and right actions. (p. 251). Hamilton stipulates that nurses can join Nurses Associations, get involved with a cause without compromising their values. (Hamilton, 2014, p. 5). In Hamilton's article she is proactive to the fact that safe staffing is a moral value. Patients are entitled to safe and quality care. An unsettled agenda is nurses need to render the appropriate care they are capable of giving. Ethics goes hand in hand with morality. There's multitude of articles addressing the dilemma of safe nursing and its breach of quality and safety in patient care. Previous to 2014 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported on two ground– breaking studies, Arriess referred to: "To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century" (2014, p. 3), ... • 25. Strategic Staffing Abstract Strategic staffing is a very important aspect of an organization as it will influence the success of the business. When developing strategies for implementing staffing, a lot of things have to be taken into consideration such as globalization. Managers have to ensure that staffing strategies are linked to the overall business strategy so that the right persons are hired for the job in question. Managers have to also ensure that the persons carrying out the task of hiring the individual understands the overall strategy of the business in order to avoid subjective decision making. Once employers understand the importance of strategic staffing, they can aligning their departmental goals with that of the company and spend adequate ... Another critical issue that was revealed in the article was the tendency of decision makers to make changes only to respond to immediate pressures instead of realigning the organization with its external environment. This type of behaviour is being reactive, when the company should be seeking to be proactive. Being proactive means that situations are controlled by causing things to happen instead of waiting to respond after things happen. It follows through with the ancient saying, "Prevention is better than cure". This is crucial to any organization's success because being proactive saves money. Instead of management making a staff change to respond to immediate pressures, they should ensure that the persons they are hiring are able to implement the strategies of the organization effectively. The failure of a newly promoted leader to perform effectively is another critical issue that was raised in the article. The author went on to explain that the problem maybe a weakness in the strategy that affected the personnel changes and staffing should be seen as a window of opportunity other than a burden. With these critical issues that need to be considered when developing strategies for strategic staffing, there are also some areas of concern that was presented in the article that also needs to be considered ... • 29. Niche Staffing The staffing industry is getting more and more crowded as the economy is showing signs of life. To make the most of the opportunities, many staffing agencies are focusing on one or two niches like construction, legal, information technology or medical care. A niche staffing agency has a deeper understanding of the particular industry, making them more attractive to companies within that niche. This helps build a pool of talented, reliable employees that can be trusted by both the agency and its clients. Despite these advantages, there are certain challenges with niche staffing. Cash flow can become a real issue, especially when an agency is ready to grow. Keeping the cash flow smooth can free up funds for hiring more staff and taking on more clients. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many staffing agencies make the mistake of making their niche too narrow. Offering staffing for the healthcare industry is a well–defined niche with plenty of room for growth. However, going too narrow can end up killing cash flows and, ultimately, the business. Too narrow a niche means there are fewer clients available, which limits the amount of staff the agency can hire and use. Having more than one niche or widening a niche is a better option. Go with your niche's expected payment terms. For example, most staffing agencies have a standard 30–day invoice payment term. But, in the medical field, that can stretch out to 60–days. If you try to impose a 30–day payment term in the medical niche, you may find your agency on the outs with clients. And once you get an unfavorable reputation within a niche market, you may never ... Nurse Staffing Safe Nurse Staffing and Patient Outcomes Regina Valenzuela Northern Arizona University Abstract Proper nurse staffing has been a debate since the modernization of nursing for many years. This paper examines the results of five researched based articles on the effects of nurse staffing and the outcomes of patient care within a hospital setting. The articles do vary in their methods of gathering information. One study used organizational data from 799 facilitates in eleven states to examine the outcomes of care from the type of nursing care received (Needleman, Buerhaus, Mattke, Stewart, & Zelevinsky, 2002). This study did not find similar evidence between licensed practical nurses or assistants. The study that examined specific determinants in relationship to adverse effects and negative patient outcomes revealed that there are many factors that contribute to negative and positive patient outcomes (Tourangeau, Cranley, & Jeffs, 2006) In this study, they find that better registered nurse staffing, high nurse autonomy, more years of nurse experience, strong leadership and support, baccalaureate educated nurses, and active involvement in hospital affairs have resulted in a decreased patient mortality rate (Tourangeau, et. al. 2006). Four of the mentioned studies did conclude in varying fashions that more registered nurses to patients did achieve better patient outcomes. The four studies did also conclude that ... Studies reveal that several other factors have also played a key role concerning nursing shortages over the years, such as healthcare organizations downsizing, reduced reimbursements, increased workloads, inadequate staffing plans and job dissatisfaction. To make matters worse, an aging workforce is contributing to the nursing shortages, with hundreds of thousands of nurses over the age of fifty, and forty–seven being the average nurse's age in the United States (Gordon, Buchanan, and Bretherton 76). According to Suzanne Gordon, whether young or old, nurses are disillusioned because they believe that health care systems guided by bottom–line concerns simply don't recognize the specificity of their work (234). Nursing is more demanding than many other professions or occupations, as a result of the combination of sicker patients, exhausting schedules and arduous physical work (Gordon 235). It can take a significant emotional toll on many, hence the higher levels of depression and stress–related illnesses (Gordon, Buchanan, and Bretherton 190). Higher workloads not only were related to burnout, but also impacted both the nurses' and the patients' safety (Gordon, Buchanan, and Bretherton 191). Job dissatisfaction as a result of insurmountable workloads and unreasonable demands, such as inappropriate nurse staffing levels, was cited as the number one reason that drove many experienced nurses to leave the profession (Sanford 38). The results of a 2006 survey of nurses who held the same job between 2003 and 2006, concluded that the three most frequently reported reasons of workload increase were: additional administrative responsibilities, ... Aycan et al. discusses how NIs are linked to mortality and morbidity in the ICU. When a patient develops an infection, they are likely to stay longer in the hospital, which increases overall costs to the hospital and to the patient. The article claims that there is evidence that supports that long LOS in hospitals affect the country's economy more than the staff's salaries. In fact, nursing is the most populated career throughout the realm of healthcare. It is recommended that reviewing staffing ratios in the ICU is necessary to lessen negative patient outcomes and ultimately, making a change in policy (2014). Furthermore, California is the first and only state that has set regulations and laws a nursing to patio ratio that must be met throughout all units and at all times in their hospitals (Dorning, 2011). Aiken conducted a study in order to conclude how the state's implications for standardized nursing ratios compare to two other states (New Jersey and Pennsylvania) without policies regarding staffing in units, such as the ICU. Aiken surveyed over 22,000 registered nurses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. Aiken found that California's ratios in their units resulted in fewer mortalities during a 30–day period than in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This was likely due to the fact that California nurses cared for, on average, about one less patient than the other two states surveyed. California hospitals also tended to respond to abnormal symptoms in their patients more often than in the comparable states. Their acuity score is much lower than a patient in the intensive care unit or a step–down unit. Healthcare systems that utilize staffing by acuity are looking at the safe number of certain levels of patients that one nurse can care for. The down side to staffing by acuity is that many feel administration will influence numbers to maintain a high number of patients per nurse. If all patients on a unit were a level eight then most acuity systems would call for three patients to one nurse but if all patients on a unit were all level ones then a nurse could be caring for as many as eight to ten patients. Acuity does not take every patient encounter into consideration. For instance a dementia patient may have a low acuity based on the nursing care since they usually do not have indwelling lines or invasive procedures. Although the same patient may require a high amount help with activities of daily living, decision making and education. (Walsh, 2003) Thus staffing by acuity can be a subjective form of nurse staffing. When done accurately, acuity based staffing can be very beneficial for the nursing staff. As the only nurse on the unit, you are in charge and other staff members look to you for advice. How would you handle this situation? What would you do? As a nurse, I have worked with adolescent teens for three years. The environment can be very unstable due to lack of staffing, inappropriate staffing and lack of training for new staff members. Situational theories propose that leaders choose the best course of action based on the situational variables. In a situation like the one presented, authoritarian style would be most appropriate as this would be the leader that is more knowledgeable and experienced. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Success in complex sales is the result of clear planning and effective execution. This requires careful coordination of many resources on both the selling and client side throughout the sales process. What is team–selling? Team–selling is using the resources of a company to sell an account using all relevant decision makers. Focusing on these fundamentals will build sensitivity and trust among team members (Spiro et al 2003). Planning Presentations Sales presentations should be simple not overwhelming with information a customer may not be able to remember. The goal of a sales presentation is to sell a solution to a customer, that solution being the product or service of the salesperson. A presentation must be relevant, make a connection with the product and the prospect, be to point, use showmanship, be animated, use physical demonstration, and belief in the product. In a team–selling environment, one person could give the presentation, one could answer questions, or however the team decides to set up the presentation. The one thing that should not happen is each person give there own presentation on the same product; do not confuse the customer. All team members should be clear on roles and responsibilities. A team should always be together so all members give the same answers and information to the customer. Selecting and Recruiting When hiring salespeople set of qualifications and a job description with the duties the salesperson will do should be established. Temporary Staffing The decision to control how an organization uses temporary labor – or perhaps more accurately, staffing providers – is typically one born of a desire to eliminate redundancy and improve the cost efficiency of using temporary workers as a part of the workforce. The need to determine a way to better manage temporary staff procurement is frequently revealed by a series of events that highlight that the company is using what feels like an unreasonable number of staffing providers. We use the term "feel" because for many, moving from distributed control to centralized control begins as a subjective realization that there is not as much order as there should be. In other words, the company's control and management comfort level has been exceeded. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Establishes internal cost expectations and guidelines. Last year in my daughters Head Start classroom a new assistant teacher was hired in with no experience with children. During the first week of school she left two students in the cafeteria and shut my daughters fingers inside of the classroom door. She often yelled at the students and had no patience with them. This caused disruptions within the room and caused several students including my daughter to drop out of the program. Although her behavior was reported on several different occasions she kept her job until the end of the school year due to lack of applications. Wolf, Perhats, Delao, Clark and Moon (2017) attempt to figure out what emergency department nurses feel are the biggest things affecting safe staffing and what they can do to fix it. They also discuss the effects of unsafe staffing on both patients and emergency department nurses. Literature Summary Wolf, Perhats, Delao, Clark and Moon (2017) set out to discover what current nurses in the emergency department thought were the biggest factors that influenced the safety of staff and their patients. They also worked to determine ways that could potentially fix this problem by figuring out what positively and negatively affected the safety of the nurses' workload. A big part of safe staffing levels is the nurse to patient ratio, which is unfortunately not mandated by department in most states. This contributes to a lot of problems in the short and long term. While a set nurse to patient ratio would likely help worth the safe staffing issue, other things like patient acuity and patient volume need to be considered as well.
