Most everyone will agree that music is enjoyed by everyone. However, not everyone likes the same
types of music. The good thing is, music has the ability to provide a vast variety of sounds that
everyone can appreciate in some form or fashion. I attended the Festival Fanfare Classical Music
Concert on June 14, 2016, in Hattiesburg, MS. This was the first time that I ever attended a classical
music event. Not knowing if I particularly liked classical music, I was pleasantly surprised at how
much I enjoyed listening to the three instruments being played: the trumpet, the piano, and the
organ.

Assignment 1 Timbre is what allows a listener to distinguish between two different sounds. It allows
the listener to recognize the difference between different songs, such as ABC (The Jackson 5)
(1970), and Back in Black (AC/DC) (1980). It also enables the listener to decipher a variety of notes
in a piece of music, and even recognize individuals by the sound of their voice.
The Sound I chose the song Imagine (John Lennon) (1971) because of the powerful lyrics that hold
so much meaning, and how relevant the lyrics still are 40 years later. People will be able to relate to
the piece for years to come, as Lennon paints a world which many dream of, but will never achieve.

There are many aspects of timbre in this piece, all which allow us to identify the song, and feel the
emotion that Lennon is trying to convey. Different types of timbre in this piece include voice, piano,
drums, and violin. The piece begins with a solo piano, which sets the tone for the song. It introduces
the listener to the piece in a way that allows us to understand that the song will be slow, and ballad–
like. The sounds of multiple violins playing at once, as they do later in the piece, gives the listener a
sense of unison, which is one of the main messages the piece is trying to convey.
Why Is It Meaningful? This piece is renowned for having a very deep meaning. Lennon describes
this vast idea of a world without concepts that separates the human population into distinct
segregations, and brews a hate for each other. He discusses how the world would be a better place if
there were

no such things as religion, no war, no countries, and no hate. Lennon pictures a world without
disparity, hunger, and suffering.
Anyone can relate to these ideas if they reflect on their lives, as most people have received some
sort of hate, or intolerance in their lives. This could include sexism, racism, homophobia, or
intolerance towards people who have mental or physical disabilities. The world that the lyrics in this

Pop culture is defined as modern popular culture transmitted via mass media. With such a large
sphere of influence, it should come as no surprise that all of pop culture has an underlying basis in
psychology. From archetypes in beloved books to heated political debates, psychology plays a

There was a return to a monophonic texture for the cello and the dynamics became pianissimo.
Since this movement's form was ostinato, I heard short melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic patterns
repeated. This piece was long, at twelve minutes, and at one point I stopped taking notes, in awe of
what I was hearing. The entire piece felt symmetrical to me and was sing able throughout.
Beethoven's Sonata 3, Opus 69 nears a close with a texture that was heterophonic, dynamics that go
from forte to piano and a bright tone color for cello and piano. The melody remained conjunct with a
contour that was wavelike, by ascending and descending, especially for the piano. The tempo
returned to allegro throughout this piece and ended with the dynamics returning to forte and the final
cadence as the harmony resolved in consonance. The second movement of Beethoven's Sonata in A
Major, Opus 69 was Scherzo: Allegro molto and began with Jordan–Anders playing the opening

Imagine a girl as she sit underneath the stars and listens to the sounds of the frogs. She admires how

be classified nowadays, from the way we think to how things sound–it's all a matter of how we
perceive things. Humans often use language and emotion to classify people–music can even

People can contract brainworms, as Oliver Sacks likes to call them. People become infected by
brainworms when they have song stuck in their head–it is usually an annoying song that appears to

The song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen is composed of many intricate musical events ranging
from the fluctuation of harmonies to the use of different forms of music. In 1974, Queen created this
song in order to show the world their true talent through an unorthodox song that no one really
expected. Today, the song is iconic, but the song did not reach its full stride in contemporary society
until it appeared on the soundtrack of the 1990s movie Wayne's World. Through its mixture of old
music such as the operatics and the relatively modern music of vibrant rock, "Bohemian Rhapsody"

I thoroughly enjoyed Sing Joyfully Unto God by Byrd, then Cello Suite No.1 in G major by Bach,
next "Libiamo ne lieti calici" from La Traviata by Verdi and finally Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev.
The piece by Byrd called Sing Joyfully Unto God was my favorite because of its rhythmic quality
which had a very smooth and flowing sound.The overall quality was very precise and easy to listen
to, although at certain times it seemed to be overwhelming it still managed to progress gracefully

Music and language share a commonality; the same way phrases are structured in music, can be
seen when thoughts are structured in sentences of different languages. Music plays a role in
memory, auditory attention, and different structures of language, such as the syntax and phonemes,
which can improve on reading and writing skills. Bidelman et al. has shown that when it comes to
music and language, speech pitch processing can differ between musicians and non–musicians,
where there are evidence that music can show sensitivity to the pitch sound toward musicians. It can
also depend on musicians who speak foreign languages, which will focus on the influence of

Ghost Town Dance Interpretation
The three recordings that I chose are Adam Lambert's Ghost Town, Sully Erna from Godsmack's
Voodoo, and Benjamin Burnley from Breaking Benjamin's Dairy of Jane.
In Ghost Town, Adam Lambert's voice is very distinctive where he has a smooth, light, and velvety
sound for a good portion of the song, however, during some portions, such as towards the ending,
his timbre is very dark, rich, and full. Thought the entire song his timbre holds a somber feeling
even when singing a considerably light.
Sully Erna (the lead singer of Godsmack) during Voodoo has a very raspy, dark, and thin timber.
Within the piece some parts are creamier than others, where it is slightly harsh. Through Voodoo
Sully Erna's timbre can also be described as mellow and may sometimes be flat or lacking depth.
Also I would describe the tone color as being darker rather than lighter.

I Attended The 50th Anniversary Celebration Of Music At Ut...
On the 4th of December in the year 2015, I attended the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Music at
UT Dallas. While there were many notable pieces, the centerpiece, which I will focus on, was a
violin and orchestra with an accordion solo called The Ox on the Roof. Originally Le boeuf sur le
toit in its native French, the musical was composed by a Frenchman of Jewish roots by the name of
Darius Milhaud in 1920. The musical played on this December night was performed under the
supervision of Director Robert Xavier Rodríguez. While there were many qualities of various shades
in this musical, the shifting timbre, the keen rhythm, and the perpetual notes of harmony were the
most notable components to me as they helped represent a dual sense of both proud, unchanging
timelessness and boisterous, dynamic nonce that gave a sense of life itself in all its glory. The
timbre, or tone, was the most apparent quality of the musical. The timbre was a mix of both soft and
rough tones. That is, the music appeared to be a mix of various genera. It often jumped between the
jaunty and loud music that seemed to be Latin folk music and soft, austere sounds that seemed to be
European classical or Romantic. This timbre was interspersed by a rhythms. This was the very
transition between the two styles of music. Originally a loud and vibrant melody, it then slowly grew

occur in nature, actually consists of waves which travel through a medium and then hit our
eardrums, causing them to vibrate and sending messages to our brain which is interpreted as sounds.
Like all the other waves in nature, sound waves can be mathematically defined as a set of equations.
Mathematical equations are exactly the way in which a video game system stores its sounds. The
sound wave equations are used to define the timbres in a song. Through a process called frequency

Concert Reflection
The concert I attended was called the Brooke Howard, Senior Clarinet Recital on November the 3rd
at the Blankenship Recital Hall. The performances consisted of the clarinet, piano, djembe, drum,
and a quartet. There were five pieces performed, four of the pieces were classical with one having a
more tribal beat with the djembe. The first piece was titled Allegro Appassionato, op 43 written by
Camille Saint–Saens. The piece started was started by the piano playing the melody. Then the
clarinet accompanied the piano creating a homophonic texture. The timbre of the clarinet was very
distinct over the piano. They continued playing then briefly there was a pause adding to the rhythm
of the piece. Then the clarinet started to play solo creating a monophonic texture. The piano started
to play again taking over the melody, with the clarinet accompanying. During this there was a
distinct repetition of notes playing over and over by the clarinet. The texture created was
homophonic as the piano and clarinet played in harmony. Then the texture switched to monophonic
as the piano and clarinet went back and forth playing the melody solo. The piece ended with the
piano and clarinet playing the same note, with the pianist letting the note fade out. The second piece

This demonstrates and embodies how Phil Spector, the producer and creator of the Wall of Sound,
held power over the Crystals. It is said that in producing the song, Spector chose specific

The Romantic Era was a period of great change and emancipation. It moved away from strict laws
by allowing artistic freedom, experimentation and creativity. Romantic music evolved from ideas
established in earlier periods, such as the classical period, and went further through the use of
expression and passion. New musical concepts evolved due to current trends and the music was
deeply personal and nationalistic. Musical concepts including pitch, tone colour and dynamics and
expressive techniques each express the style of the Romantic period in differing ways. These

As the Nocturne is played with legato articulation, this creates more freedom and expression. The
Valse however, is played with Tempo Giusto. This means it is much more strict as it must be played

The twentieth century music composition gave way to more incorporation to music as it was known.
It was the time when musical rules could be reinvented, altered and in some cases completely
ignored (Hansen, et al 154). This classical music was described by many different works such as,
orchestral, solos, operas, concertos, symphonies, chamber music, and many others (Hansen, et al
168). As stated by Hansen, et al, "Some musical styles within the modernist movement were
impressionism, serialism, minimalism, electronic music, experimental music, and change music
(160). All the musical styles were influenced through jazz but it was a moment of breakthrough for
all the composers since all rules were ignored. Aaron Copland and Benjamin Britten were two
composers of that century that shaped the way twentieth century classical music was viewed. The
different elements of classical musical such as melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, timbre, and form
are what characterized the twentieth century classical music. First, twentieth century music had
taken a different approach than earlier music eras. There were varieties of differences which started
from the instruments and the sounds that it produced to the complexity of the textures. The
composers used new approaches and ideas to their compositions and broke many rules. The

Car Radio Musical Analysis Essay
The song I choose for this deep analysis is Car Radio by Twenty–One Pilots. I recognized three
parts in this song, meaning it has a ternary form. This analysis is divided into sections, A B A'. Each
section will explain the usage of instruments, dynamics, tempo, texture, and harmony. In the first
section, A, I recognized the usage of a piano, synthesizers, and a drum set. Different parts of the
drumset, like the cymbals and the bass drum, are playing at a pianissimo and slowly crescendo up to
a mezzo piano. In the music, the drum set plays a big role in the leaps it presents when it starts
creating a beat. The synthesizers create different sounds which add to the music of the song. The

I went to go see a college production of Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at a recital hall at
Meredith College. The hall was almost full, but it was not huge auditorium or stage. The stage was

it was family event. Many had flowers, so some of the audience was families supporting those
performing. Most people seemed engaged in the performance, especially when performers entered
from the back of hall because it would catch their attention. There were two parts of the concert;
selected Arias, and the opera. The opera singers in the first part of the show sung with piano

Mid-Year Band Concert
On February 25, 2016, I was able to see the Mid–Year Band Concert in the PAC. The pieces I have
chosen to review were performed by the Varsity, Symphonic II and Symphonic I Bands and
conducted by Mr. Bailey and Mr. Hillhouse. "King Cotton," "Amparito Roca," and "Valdres" were
among my favorites in the program and are all coincidentally, marches. To start with, the Varsity
Band performed a royal march called "King Cotton" by Karl King. It reminded me of a Sousa–type
piece due to the recurring melody and march style. As the piece began, the band played tutti but had
a mediocre balance due to the woodwind instruments, particularly the clarinets, standing out from

slower piece and therefore, the dynamics changed from lento to vivace. Soon, all woodwinds, brass
and percussion joined into the repeating melody adding a fuller feeling to the march. Shortly, the
band crescendoed into a short rest. Then, the french horns to play piano, giving a darker tone and a
brassy timbre. During this, a trumpet played a short fanfare that was very well played with use of
quieter, legato dynamics to resemble the rest of the brass but still be more prominent with an
unequal balance. The trumpet also had a pattern of an ascending then descending scale. Together the
brass reminded me of the fullness and darkness of a serene forest or peaceful voyage. Perhaps

the David Owsley Museum I was looking at art pieces that had more of a realistic feel and trying to

Beethoven Encounters paper On Saturday December 5, 2015 I went to the New York Public Library
Center for the Preforming Arts at Lincoln Center to view the performance called "Beethoven
Encounters". The show was free and it was in the Bruno Walter Auditorium. The pieces being
performed were "String Quartet Opus 18 no. 5" all four movements. This was followed by "String
Quartet Opus 18 no. 1" all four movements of this. Which was then finished with "String Quartet
Opus 18 no. 4" with all four movements again. The show began at 2:30 in the afternoon and went on
for about an hour or so. The group presenting were the "The New York Classical Players". This
group is a quartet. All four members are highly trained classical violinists who have all preformed

Southorn who is the second most well trained person in this group. Danbi Um, the second violinist,
is an Israeli violinist who mostly does solo work but she also is an extremely well experienced
violinist. She has performed in both America and Israel doing shows in concert halls as well as on

violinist who has been the teacher of at least one other member of this group. That member was

there was a section of the song that sounded different and after about ten seconds the song goes back

patterns that produce a distinctive line of sound (Kaemmer:62). When the band first began to play
the song started in a low tone and the music began to escalate and it reached a climax where the
loudness of the performance was at its peak. Once at its peak the music began to get softer and
lower. This is an example of a linear form of the performance. Linear form means a performance

Alfred Lord Tennyson, and the ballet of Le Cygne (The Swan) by Anna Pavlova connected to each
other clearly and meaningfully by describing how The Swan's experience connects to human being's
life cycle. The compositions musical elements connect to the poem because it starts with a
depressing and miserable sound as how the poem starts in the first stanza. Then, the composition
gives an inspiring emotion to the listener as how the poem gives inspiration to the reader.
Furthermore, the composition also connects to the ballet because it follows the rhythm and melody
of the composition by creating a dance that expresses an aching heart over people dying, peace of
the deceased, and it inspired people to accept death as the dying swan accepted its own death. The
ballerina shifted her speed with the tempo of the music symbolizing the meaning and feeling of the
poem. The composer's choices were effective in creating such a dramatic moment because the
composition, ballet, and poem flew along as they instilled a mournful and content joy causing a
death confronting inspiration. The instrumentation in The Swan composition is a violincello that
was transcribed by the harp and viola, and the tempo is played both slowly and quickly. The cello is
the baritone of the strings, which creates a melodious tone both deep and dulcet. Furthermore, the
other instruments that were played in the background were the harp and violas, which are the
accompaniments of the cello's solo. The harp has a ringlike sharp tone and the viola provides a
lower pitch that has a rich, complete tone. The harp and the viola play a harmony, timbre, and
rhythm for the cello's solo. Additionally, cellos are usually used to compose classical music, which
probably influenced the composer to use a cello because it will connect better to The Dying Swan
poem. The cello created a deeply inspirational sound that other instruments would of probably have
failed to produce. Moreover, the tempo of the composition starts off by playing slowly, to give a
serious or solemn feeling because the poem starts off by giving a vivid depressed feeling to the
