The Diversity Of Black Americans
Diversity is now, more than ever before, at the forefront of the American conversation. Black people
have been slowly but surely making gains in today's society and in ways that were not possible
before. African Americans are more educated and more affluent, and more important as consumers
than ever before. By 2017, they are expected to have a spending power of 1.3 trillion dollars
(Resilient, 2013). Young, influential, and brand loyal, this group should be the target of many
companies. Interestingly enough, there has not been much of an effort on the part of marketers to
appeal to this growing group. Additionally, the lack of diversity as well as the alienation of black
people in the media is not doing much to allow a wider range of companies to reach them. Black
Americans are a powerful group, and smart marketers will put a focus on investing in them to
increase their market share.
It is important that people learning about the black customer understand the diversity of the black
population in America. Since 1990, the black immigrant population has nearly doubled, with 3.8
million living in the country now. This is almost 9% of the black population. This is only going to
continue – "by 2060, the U.S. Census predicts that one out of six U.S. blacks...will be immigrants"
(Increasingly Affluent, 2015, p. 12). This is important from a marketing standpoint – this group of
blacks come from very different backgrounds and can identify as black in a very different way than

Black People And The American Revolution
Throughout history, black people have been oppressed. As far back to the Middle Passage and
American Revolution. In this essay, I am going to investigate the ways black people resisted their
ill–treatment. I will do this by investigating different time periods between the Middle Passage and
the American Revolution so that we may find trends. From my investigations, we see in what ways
and for what reasons their resistance varied by their time and location in history. Additionally, we
will be able to see how their resistance calmed as they became more familiar to the land, and as they
began to see America as home.
In the Middle Passage, Africans were captured and sold by other Africans of their native land. They
were then packed on a ship as if they were cargo. The conditions on that ship were unsanitary and of
poor life quality, that many were struck with various illnesses. When many of the slaves aboard felt
their growing despair, they attempted to resist their oppression by ending their lives so that they may
mess with the slave business. This is evident in The Making of African American, pg. 63, where we
read that: "Some slaves...were determined to destroy themselves. They waiting the right moment
and threw themselves into the sea and the waiting sharks. When the crew––determined to protect its
valued cargo––blocked the way with nets and other barriers, slaves starved themselves."
This quote shows us that during the beginnings of slavery, at the time of the Middle

Black American Political System
"We should seek not a world where the black race and white race live in harmony, but a world in
which the terms black and white have no real political meaning."Andress Coales shows us the
disgusting world today. Society says blacks are treated unfairly through life and other certain things
in life. The countries in today's world are continuing to make changes for the blacks to The blacks
are starting to believe that the changes are going to start being made, but some think changes have
already been made. In an article Blacks and Whites are Worlds Apart mentions , "Blacks, far more

The judgments that they have against each other is for some of the worst reasons to judge someone.
Some of these judgments are the way there names are, the way they live in this society, and even the
way they look. One of these reasons of judgement has caused many problems towards the white and
blacks and it is the way there names are. Many blacks and whites have the biggest judgments
towards each other by their names. In society today there is far more reasons to judge someone other
than their name and we are trying to stop it. According to Sendhil Mullainathan, "we can isolate the
effect of race to some degree, we randomly used stereotypically African–American names (such as
"Jamal") on some and stereotypically white names (like "Brendan") on others." However,
communities all around have had judgment towards whites and blacks, such as getting a job and
having an interview with the different colors of race. The judgments aren't only there color, but of
the way they look. These judgments that have been told and done because of a different color of race
trying to work for a living or the way they look and think they can't be trusted has caused many
issues and society is trying to solve the problem so other races can work for the opposite race.
Sendhil Mullainathan believes, "Others contend that they are merely the tip of the iceberg,

Stereotypical Images Of Mexican Americans And Black Americans
Stereotypical Images of Mexican Americans and Black Americans in the contemporary media?
Angel Garcia
Bakersfield College
In today's society judging races and ethnic groups have left stereotypical images on them.
Stereotypical images are seen all over, even in contemporary media. Hispanic Americans and Black
Americans are two ethnic groups that I've recognized on having that stereotypical image in the
contemporary media. Hispanic Americans and Black Americans are left with harm because of these
stereotypes that have been shown in the contemporary media, for example in the television shows
George Lopez and Everybody Hates Chris. It seems to be that stereotypes are being less focused on
or just being allowed because of the humor they bring out in those television shows.
Hispanic Americans are often stereotyped in today's society. Stereotypes that are said about Hispanic
Americans include: The lazy Mexican, the Greaser, drug dealers, and gang bangers. These
Stereotypes leave an image on all the Mexican Americans as being bad people. The media has been
playing a big part in showing stereotypes but we tend to ignore them because they use it in a way
were comedy is being introduced. For example, the television show George Lopez involves a
Mexican American family going through their daily routines in the city of Los Angeles, where the
majority of the population are Hispanics. In the George Lopez show, George Lopez plays the father
role and every night when he gets

Black American Motherhood
In the context of the many worries that Black American mothers must relentlessly carry for their
daughters' safety, you [Emily Bernard] claim that "hope" is what drives you to release your
daughters into the world and cease the rage you experience each time you hear about a young
African–American being murdered. However, in response to your article "Between the World and
Me: Black American Motherhood", I would say that not only should you continue to carry "hope",
but it is also crucial that you have a desire to incite change. Given that you are a professor of Critical
Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Vermont, you could also initiate serious discussion
about race among your students that could then hopefully carry over to the rest ... Show more

When you referenced Ta–Nehisi Coates' article "Letter to My Son", I was terrified by his experience
with his son when you reiterated, "Ta–Nehisi Coates took his son, not yet 5, to see a movie on the
Upper West Side of Manhattan. As his son made his way off the escalator, a white woman pushed
him and said, 'Come on!' Chaos ensued. There was a black parent's rage and a white man's threat to
have the black parent arrested" (Bernard 1–4). This incident forced me to reflect on the dominance
that white people have held over black people throughout our country's history, and it is sickening to
know that there are still people around who are willing to impose this ideology upon others. I hold
even more sympathy for Black American mothers due to America's extensive history of oppressing
African–Americans. This is evident given the many years they have been subjected to prejudice and
violence on top of the fact that they were coerced to leave their homeland and serve as slaves in
America and then repeatedly battle just to gain equal rights with white people. For these reasons, I
do not hold any disagreements with your fears and that you have every right to believe that your
daughters could be a target due to their skin color given our country's brutal history. Nonetheless, if
we are going to resolve this predicament, then we need to

The Differences Between Black Americans And White Americans
There has never been two men who fought for the same cause yet had two completely different
views such as Martian Luther King and Robert Williams. These two men strived to bring equality to
Black Americans. King believed in peaceful protest that made lawmakers and legislation realize that
there was an issue that needed and had to be addressed in order to bring about social equality.
Williams on the other had believed that a personal war was the only way to "fix" the issues between
Black Americans and White Americans. Martian Luther King Jr. was born and raised in Atlanta to a
Baptist church going family. King's father was an intimidating man who was quoted for saying that
he "would make something out of [Martian] even if he had to beat him to death" while "whooping"
King one day as a child. But still King was inspired by his father's challenging nature towards others
ignorance. For example King tells about when he was a boy his father and him were pulled over and
the police officer referred to King Sr. as "boy". So King Sr. pointed to Martian and snapped, "that is
a boy, I am a man." King remembered every time someone referred or called him a "nigger" and
watched how poorly his fellow Black American was treated as second–class citizens. As King grew
older he joined the church as a preacher. King went on to study many types of people and ideas
ranging from Marxism to forms of Christianity to Gandhi. King had a unique ability to "absorb and

Essay On Black American Stereotypes
The media in our lives has the strongest impact on our everyday conversations, actions, judgments
and perception on society as a whole. Without our modern day technology the world would result to
judgments based on their own personal beliefs, not being so easily persuaded by others. The
contemporary media portrays Black and Hispanic Americans in numerous positive ways, but more
so in a negative light. The stereotypes that these minorities have been given not only affect the
community as a whole, but the personal lives of each individual. Although the media can be used for
good, the captivating movies, news stories, and documentaries seem to have a negative outcome.
The medias focus on Black and Hispanic Americans has not always been bad, but the stereotypes
that have developed over the decades shed a negative light on these two racial and ethnic groups. A
common stereotype for Black Americans is the over criminalization of black men. Although
criminals come in every shape, size and race black men are targeted as criminals more than any
other race. The media recently came out with the movie "Straight Outta Compton" which focused on
the real life events of young rappers now. White policemen harass and attempt to ... Show more

ethnic communities. Their way of life including their historical pasts, languages, religious ways and
social relations will be deeply enumerated. A comparison will be included and similarities and
differences drawn between the two groups. The groups will be compared on how they can interact in

The US minority groups include the blacks, Asian Americans, Hawaiians and American Indians.
Based on gender, men are the majority while the women are the minority with the religious category
including the Muslims, Amish, Mormons and Roman Catholics as the minorities. The class that will
be considered and laid emphasis on in this paper is the ethnic classification. The rich cultural
diversity that the Indian Americans and African Americans brought into America can be identified
through their cultures and how they interact and relate to one another. Through this paper, I will
discuss the elements of each culture, compare and contrast the differences and similarities and how
the two may interact with the dominant group as minority groups.
African–Americans
Most of the African Americans in the United States have their roots deeply embedded in Africa. The
Africans were held captive in the US from 1555 to 1865 when the slave trade was rampant
(Tishkoff, et al., 2009). The African Americans had numerous titles such as Negroes and Colored,
but the terms are no longer accepted in English and currently people of the ethnic group are referred
to as African Americans or Blacks. The Blacks originated from the numerous ethnic groups from
mainly the Central and Western Africa. Another minority group originated from eastern and south–
eastern Africa. The different groups may have been different

African Americans And Black Crime
A challenge I think African Americans families face in the 21st century is black on black crime. Just
recently in the Brown vs Ferguson case African Americans properties were destroyed, vandalize,
and burned after the verdict of officer Wilson not being indicted. I thought instead of the African
Americans going against each other they should have showed more respect and honor for each other.
The Micheal Brown case was a tragic loss to the black community, especially after the lost of
Trayvon Martin having the same verdict. African Americans as a whole could have shown a little
more of a positive response to each other. Black on black crime that occurs when the poorest,
weakest members of a population turn on each other out of desperation. African Americans come
against peers and neighborhoods who are black. African Americans are the number one race in
America by a percentage of 49% of crime within each other, followed by American Indians. Today
African Americans are about 13 percent of the population and continue to be responsible for an
inordinate amount of crime. The black arrest rate for most offenses; include robbery, aggravated
assault and property crimes as you seen in recent justice cases such as Brown and Trayvon. Black on
black crime has been a part of the American lexicon for years(Bain & Friends, 2000). The
willingness of so many black Americans to kill and hurt one another by not being able to see each
other as a family, despite common past and present. The

Black American Justice System
The Justice System Hinders Black Americans More Than Slavery Slavery is a taboo and often
neglected subject in the American education system. It is occasionally brought up throughout the
year, only to be explained in "depth" in February during black history month. These events have
disfranchised the black American to a level of sub–humanity that has never been seen before. The
way that black Americans have been disfranchised after slavery has destroyed the black psyche even
worse than slavery has. During slavery, the African had no choice but to accept their subhuman
status. Freedom was a slave's main priority and/or aspiration; it was something that was often
discussed on a day to day manner. Although it was a central topic, Slaves ... Show more content on

With slavery, African Americans were conditioned to accept their status as "other". Whites made no
effort to hide their disdain for black people. In this new system however, African Americans were
given the illusion that they were free, so they resisted speaking out on such inequality due to the fact
that they were told that they should be grateful for their freedom. The current system works so that
since birth, African Americans, males in particular, are pushed towards aggression and dysfunction.
The family life of the disadvantage and poor which primarily feature African Americans has become
dramatically more complex and unstable over the last few decades. In 2010, 72% of black children
were born to single unwed mother and many of these fathers are incarcerated (Newsone, 2010).
Minorities are also given harsher time for petty crimes than their Caucasian counterparts, which also
increases the time away from their children. There are more black men that are in prison or jail, on
probation or on parole than were enslaved in 1850 (Alexander, 2010). And black men suffer a
disproportional rate drug arrests that often do not reflect higher rates of black drug offenses. In fact,
whites and blacks engage in drug offenses, including possession and sales at roughly comparable

America is led by the Democratic Party and rejects Western Civilization. Why have we failed

Black-American School Closures
A byproduct of accountability standards and school–choice, school closures are seemingly inevitable
for public schools in urban areas across the United States. In the school year 2011–2012, there were
1,840 school closures in the United States and those closed schools enrolled and educated
approximately 301,000 in the previous school year (National Center for Education Statistics, 2014).
Though school closures widely affect all students, school closures have an even greater affect on
Black students educational experiences. A Black–American proverb says, when White America

some White Americans could essentially be deadly for most Black Americans. ... Show more

Bush's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) federal policy. Both Clinton and Bush administrations
regulated freedom of choice within their educational policies. Clinton's Goals 2000 increased
standards for student scores within core subjects. Legislation targeting Title I, required States and
school districts to "turn–around" low–performing schools, and in 1993, public charter schools
increased to over 2, 000 (www.clinton5.nara.gov). Bush's No Child Left Behind's structure
demanded high–stakes testing and created provision for privatization of public education, as well as
"school choice ." No Child Left Behind not only increased the Clinton's strong accountability
disposition, but it also superimposed a new set of accountability rules that would adversely affect
public schools (Porter, Linn, & Trimble, 2005). One significant requirement of NCLB is that each
state must adopt challenging academic content standards and challenging student achievement
standards. Additionally, states must establish Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals for each year
from 2002 to 2014–that would culminate in the 2014 goal that all American students would be at or

Black Identity And The American Dream
"The soul was the body that fed the tobacco, and the spirit was the blood that watered the cotton,
and these created the first fruits of the American garden" (Coates 104). In Between the World and
Me," and within this quote alone, Ta–Nehisi Coates argued not only the importance of black
identity, but also how and why black identity was so deceivingly shaped in response to the dark
history behind it. Through Coates' recollections and fair warnings to his son, the relationship
between black identity and "The Dream" becomes clearer. In spite of the "white supremacist"
trademark that comes stamped upon "The Dream," Coates provides impermeable evidence as to why
black identity is not only more invested in history than white identity, but more importantly why it is
the investment to be made in "The American Dream." The history of black identity is commonly
associated with slavery, violence, and segregation. While Coates brought these associations to the
table aware of how unjust they were, he found that the more alarming correspondence lied within
the reasons why. It is undeniable that history has given "blackness" various underlying
connotations–impoverished, uneducated, and as being the "below of [the] country" (Coates 106).
The influence began as early as the onset of the Civil War, when "stolen" black bodies were an
accepted form of currency and even America's finest leaders were experts of the trade (Coates 101).
America became no stranger to destroying the black body in the

What Is The Miseducation Of Black American Education
The Miseducation of members of the Black community
Thinking about the struggle that lead to the emergence of Black studies departments in America,
with help from students and teachers, to understanding today based on past failures what the right
kind of education looks like, feels like and the outcomes it produces, it becomes clear that the legacy
of educating Black people to have white minds is still in play. Additionally, after all that Black
studies departments have accomplished, a return back to communal involvement/community service

Particularly with the Black Campus Movement of the 1960's, as the first BSU and Black Studies
department formed at San Francisco college (now a university) in 1966, through this movement
such centered learning would advance the Black community nearby but they too ran into trouble
when people in leadership positions weren't conscious, so as they were operating against the
interests of the community and against service, they harmed the progress that the Black community
could possibly make. Therefore, setting up Black Studies departments on majority white campuses
(since everyone doesn't live close to HBCU's) was to teach and spread a consciousness that
incorporated what needed to be done for the betterment of Black folks hence through social
responsibility implementation. Rogers also makes it clear that service learning and community
involvement paired with education started with Black churches and colleges, and that "in West
Africa as well as ancient Egypt, social responsibility was developed through the educational process
of initiation" (1122). Rogers then goes on explaining Asa Hilliard's argument that the importance of
character, spiritually and social responsibility were valued in ancient Africa and in Egypt, which
shows that education used to boost the Black community by literally being in the community on
ground level is native to

Being Smart, Black, Young And American
In my early 20s, before I was cast on 30 Rock and while I was still trying to find my way as an
actor, I attempted a very odd social experiment: I would often walk into audition rooms using an
English accent. I'd introduce myself and engage in light pre–audition conversations with a standard
upper–class British dialect. I would then launch into the scene with my regular speaking voice, and
after the scene was over, I'd return to the British for my salutations. The truth of the matter was this:
I did it because I was frustrated. Being smart, black, young and American had become a liability.
People seemed to think I was some kind of walking oxymoron. I was often asked to be more

Don't' get me wrong, a person who is being discriminated against doesn't have a responsibility to
educate or inform their discriminator (it is never the job of the oppressed to stop their own
oppression), but I suggest that we merely can't disconnect from the event; for disconnection breeds
further ignorance. When I was told I talked white, my natural instinct was to get offended, think the
racial divide was hopeless, and then passive aggressively speak in a British accent. What I've come
to understand, however, is that in these moments, revealing more about myself is exactly what's
needed. My response to being told I "talk white" has now become a non–confrontational, genuine
question: "How do you think black people are supposed to talk? Because for me, every black person
I've ever known talks like I do." This is either met with defensiveness or apologies or a genuine
desire to understand the bias – but it is always met with some form of engagement. I try to treat it as
an open door to a further dialogue. Some people walk through that door, some people don't. But
through it all, I get to remain steadfastly myself. I don't see that response as being more tolerant in
the face of racial bias. It's not about taking the high road. I see it as avoiding a diversion from the
road I've already chosen. It's about not getting angry or frustrated in the presence of prejudice; but
more about being open and forthright. I

Essay about Black Americans
Black Americans
Black Americans are those persons in the United States who trace their ancestry to members of the
Negroid race in Africa. They have at various times in United States history been referred to as
African, coloured, Negro, Afro–American, and African–American, as well as black. The black
population of the United States has grown from three–quarters of a million in 1790 to nearly 30
million in 1990. As a percentage of the total population, blacks declined from 19.3 in 1790 to 9.7 in
1930. A modest percentage increase has occurred since that time. Over the past 300 and more years
in the United States, considerable racial mixture has taken place between persons of African descent

Others landed as slaves in the West Indies and were later resold and shipped to the mainland.
Slavery in America The earliest African arrivals were viewed in the same way as indentured servants
from Europe. This similarity did not long continue. By the latter half of the 17th century, clear
differences existed in the treatment of black and white servants. A 1662 Virginia law assumed
Africans would remain servants for life, and a 1667 act declared that "Baptism do not alter the
condition of the person as to his bondage or freedom." By 1740 the SLAVERY system in colonial
America was fully developed. A Virginia law in that year declared slaves to be "chattel personal in
the hands of their owners and possessors . . . for all intents, construction, and purpose whatsoever."
In spite of numerous ideological conflicts, however, the slavery system was maintained in the
United States until 1865, and widespread antiblack attitudes nurtured by slavery continued
thereafter. Prior to the American Revolution, slavery existed in all the colonies. The ideals of the
Revolution and the limited profitability of slavery in the North resulted in its abandonment in
northern states during the last quarter of the 18th century. At the same time the strength of slavery
increased in the South, with the continuing demand for cheap labour by the tobacco growers and
cotton farmers of the Southern states. By 1850, 92 percent of all

black Americans used to be forced to live in. This form of entertainment soon becomes famous
throughout the whole America, black and white. Not only was music industry so greatly innovated
at this time, African American poets, painters, and dancers emerged and presented their astonishing
works. With these works, new ideas developed and are used today. A perfect example of one of these
ideas is Hip Hop. If it were not for the "oppressive regimes of slavery and segregation" black
Americans would not have solidified their "commitment to values of family, education, and self–
improvement (values [are defined] as fundamentally–though not always inclusively–American)"

cities like Chicago caused for restrictive covenants to be placed to not allow black people to rent or

Black students are more likely to be held back, despite mounting research showing that holding back

Black History Of American Education
"The history of American education abounds with themes that represent the inextricable ties
between citizenship in a democratic society and popular education."(Anderson) As a result of their
skin color, blacks had always been discriminated against in US society. As a result, blacks had
become jaded to the harshness of inequality and could not find a plausible way to gain equal footing
because they were taught that they were lesser beings than whites. From late 19th century to the end
of the 20th century, blacks have championed for their civil rights as a result of the initial education
and basic civil rights granted to them after constitutionally written freedom from slavery. However,
blacks were still inhibited from becoming full members of society by discriminatory racial
stereotypes and laws imposed on them by US society such as Jim Crows laws. Black history in the
US, as a result, is immensely complicated and unique as is portrays the struggle of a race to elevate
to an equal status of whites in US society, a struggle that continues to this day. However, oppression
caused by Jim Crow laws stimulated the formation of black political parties that unified the race,
notably the NAACP, and by utilizing the education given to the blacks during the Reconstruction
Era and beyond, they formed a sense of black culture and identity, advancing their racial position in
society. Through the power of education and economic opportunities, blacks obtained basic
citizenship, a key trait

Racial Harmony And Black Americans Essay
Many people believed that the election of a black president would progress America to a new age of
racial harmony where black Americans would gain the equality of their white counterparts.
Ironically, electing a black president has made the country more divided on various fronts where
some people are even saying that black Americans have lost some of their rights during President
Obama's tenure. Between the World and Me is Ta–Nehisi Coates' memoir in the form of a letter to
his 15– year–old son, Samori. In it, he expounds on his views of racism which tie directly to the
treatment of modern day black Americans in this current social climate––a powder keg ready to
explode.
As Coates confronts the ongoing struggle of being black in America, he shows how it has shaped his
life and American history, many times at the expense of black lives. Coates poignantly asks and
attempts to answer difficult questions that plague modern society today, one of the questions being,
"what should Americans do to treat black Americans as fairly as white Americans?"
White and black Americans are deeply divided on views of race relations in America. The racial
divide in America is fueled by the social inequality in the school systems, justice system, and
poverty in general. Black Americans should be treated as fairly as white Americans with full access
of privileges, benefits, and responsibilities of any American. They should have the right to determine

Black American Situation
What is the situation of the black American during this period? The situation of the black american
during this period was one of change. In the years leading up to the civil war, the southern states
were dominated by comically high amount of slaves, with almost 90% of African Americans in the
United States being in chains. The abolition movement was growing though, and gaining a large
backing. Come 1861, the cries for abolition were deafening, and the South seceded, firing the first
shots of the civil war on Ft. Sumter.Lincoln signed the Emancipation Procolamtion in 1863, freeing

Gettysburg address saddened and inspired people all over the Union, and truly brought the Borth

Black Americans And African Immigrants
The common bond of slavery is what draws Black Americans together, but is what drives Black
Americans and African immigrants apart. Many African immigrants have only read or heard about
racial discrimination, but have never faced it first–hand. They admire what Black Americans have
done, but when they come to this country they and maintain a separate identity from native–born
blacks. Because of the separation, whites were more willing to serve Africans and Black Americans
thought African immigrants were receiving better treatment from society (Reddick, 1998). Being
Black in America is already a complicated existence, but being a Black immigrant is a very different
existence. Black Americans often do not know the country their ancestors came from and feel more
American than African or Caribbean. African immigrants are often in an identity complex because
often they are not considered Black enough for the Black community and not being American
enough for the white communities. They are often overlooked when discussing immigration policies
though they are the fastest growing immigration population. Even though African immigrants are
more educated and find success they also struggle to find jobs in their field due to racial
discrimination (Omara, 2017)
Black alumni are enthused to see increasing numbers of Black students at elite schools such as
Harvard and Yale, but raises the question of what type of Black students are getting in (Rimer &

The Violence Of Black Americans Essay
Who are we? What defines us? In America, we are defined by our class, what we do and most
importantly – how we look. Since the birth of our nation, a notion of "race" has been rooted to our
core personas. In fact it can enforce stereotypes of class and careers. It is evident that Black
Americans are un–proportionally living in poverty and without easy access to achievement. This
harsh reality is not helped by our media–driven society. In a world so heavily integrated with mass
media hysteria, we scroll past posts that can have the countering effects of degradation or
empowerment through our identities. While movements of Black Power can be painted through
media, it also not hard to see the difference between the ways in which Black Americans are
manipulated within the lens of media. They are portrayed as fitting a certain stereotype –
uneducated, violent and intriguingly exotic. For example, while women in general face the enemy of
"sex sells", black women have this experience intensified. These women are portrayed as exotic
sexual beings. They are objectified and degraded with the intent of women of color being seen as
sexually gratifying, but nothing more. The parallels to the mindset one hundred years ago is uncanny
– black women, black men and black children are seen as objects to appropriate and use for the
media's benefit. We can see this through our some of our "greatest" stars. Miley Cyrus, the
Kardashians and even Justin Timberlake have taken a culture and twisted

Black Americans And Segregation
Under the constitution of the USA all Americans are equal but a loophole in the laws allowed
Southern States to segregate Blacks from Whites on the basis that separate was equal. The Jim Crow
laws segregated Blacks in public life. The KKK was still active and the Great depression of the
1930s hit Black Americans the hardest. The new deal helped Black Americans because they were
poor not because they were black. Many migrated North in search of a better life with no
segregation.
When the USA entered into the war in 1941, many Black Americans enlisted into the armed forces
while others worked in factories but racism continues both on the fighting and home fronts.

However, other studies continue to show that there are consequences for race in regards to a police
officer's response to criminal suspects. One study in particular used a computer simulation to
examine police officers' decisions to shoot Black and White criminal suspects. Responses to the
simulation revealed that upon initial exposure to the program, the officers were more likely to
mistakenly shoot unarmed Black compared with unarmed White suspects. However, after extensive
training with the program, in which the race of the suspect was unrelated to the presence of a
weapon, the officers were able to eliminate this bias. (Plant, A., & Peruche, M. n.d.) Although there
is a group of people who have the counterargument that reverse racism is becoming more of an issue

oppression of black Americans is ingrained and rooted in history ("The Oppression"). With our
country of immigrants, blacks were bought here by force and were kept as slaves for one–hundred

against black Americans is considered "justified" because racist ideologies borrowed from slavery,

Blacks have worse health, even when economics are controlled (Randall 1). Specifically, middle–
class whites are healthier than middle–class blacks (Randall 1). Actually, middle–class blacks live
ten years on average less than middle–class Whites, and poor Blacks live three years less than poor
whites (Randall 1). Additionally, racial health disparities are explained by the stress of living in a
prejudiced society (Randall 1). Even college degrees can not close the racial gap in the job hunt
(Luo 1). In order for the idealistic African American men to have the same employment
opportunities as their white peers, one would need two or more higher levels of education (Bessler

job predictions for white man who have some college education but no degrees, which is 92.8

American Psycho And The Black Swan
Nearly everyone in the world can be classified with some sort of mental or psychological disorder,
whether it's a big "problem" or just something small and rather unnoticable. Since film making
became possible, people have been producing movies with a character that has some sort of
psychological or mental disorder. Within the last 20 years, American Psycho, Shutter Island, and
The Black Swan, have all had strong in their message and meaning in the mental disorder
community. American Psycho and The Black Swan deal with borderline personality disorders in
both of the main characters, while Shutter Island is more about post traumatic stress disorder and
dissociative identity disorder. Movies dealing with characters with mental or psychological disorders
are harder to portray, but if they can be portrayed correctly, they are likely to be some of the best
movies you have ever seen. American Psycho is an incredible film with an even more brilliant cast;
Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, and Reese Witherspoon, to name a few. When the scene
opens, you see Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) going about a normal healthy life as a wealthy
investment banker. But then you start to see the secret life he is leading as a serial killer. When he

African American And Black Athletes
The stereotyped group that is a problem is African American and black athletes being portrayed as
beast like, unintelligent, emotional, dominating, violent, and brutal. The specific sport of focus is the
NBA. Black athletes are portrayed as beast and animal like in media images like poster, magazine
covers, tee shirts, and game freeze frames. Black players have made many strides in the NBA,
nearly 75% of NBA players are black, while only 23% of players are white (The 2015 Racial and
Gender Report Card). Although there are many black players the media is still owned and operated
by predominantly white gatekeepers. This negative stereotype is because it disregards the hours of
hard work that black players complete to play professionally. African Americans feel this cover
misrepresents them. Blacks could feel exploited, manipulated, or even subconsciously use it as
justification for confirming the negative stereotypes the media feeds society. It is a racist notion that
black players are unintelligent and rely on genetics "animal instincts" to be great players. If this
stereotypes continues young blacks may see believe that they are unintelligent and slack off in
school, believing that they can make it through like based on their athletic ability. It perpetuates a
"super model minority". An excellent example of this stereotype is the visual portrayals of NBA
superstar LeBron James in the media. James has been prevalent in sports media dating back to his

Black Americans And The Black Freedom Struggle
Many have thought that the end of the civil war was also the end of the suppression against Black
Americans. However, real freedom hasn't been present to them. Discriminations against Black
Americans were transformed and still exist in other aspects. The life of a Black American was
planned before he or she was born, not much freedom in their hands. Black American experience
disadvantage and discrimination in many different institutions that all prove the existence of
Neocolonialism. From housing to education, formal and informal social controls prevented them
from equality and freedom. Moreover, Black youth was forced to be in the pipeline of incarceration
from school, because of the lack of resources and attention to them. In this ongoing fight for Black
Freedom, many influential Black leaders stepped up. One of them is one of the most important
figures in the Black freedom struggle history, Ella Baker. This essay will first, explain key issues on
Black Americans' freedom in housing and school to prison pipeline, then identify Ella Baker's theory
in the Black Freedom Struggle, and finally define what freedom means. It's the American dream to
own a house with beautiful white fences and yard and live joyfully with families, but not many
Black Americans can live up to that dream. The hate and prejudice against Black American didn't
reduce much since the end of the civil war. "I'm not prejudice, but I'd burn this building down before
I'd sell it to any damned nigger."

Black Codes For African Americans
I think that Black codes were very cruel to all African Americans, and were used to single out

viewed african americans as nothing, just because of their skin color. I have heard of the black codes
in the movie called " The Help" when Elaine Stein was asking Aibileen Clark to help her get it

Black Boy: The American Dream
Over the years, the meaning of the American Dream has been modified for specific groups of
individuals simply because of race, gender and ethnicity. The supposed definition of the American
Dream are the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every
American, which is based off of bias. This implies that, anyone that works hard should gain success
and happiness in America. But instead, many tend to fail or face hardships because the supposed
definition varies between individuals.
In the autobiography Black Boy by Richard Wright, he faced harsh obstacles and it's up to him so
resolve them. As a child, Richard was incredibly rebellious. He faced harsh discrimination and
segregation, but he never understood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also, gave a perspective of how the American dream played out for the African American
community. As young Richard grew up he experienced harsh treatment from his family and
discrimination from the laws that were established back then to lowers African Americans. While he
worked hard and a lot, he was not able to reach that standard of actually achieving, what is the
American Dream. For instance, when he worked for the lady that asked "do you steal?" in chapter 6,
showed what type of person she thought he was, which in a way built his character but dehuminatize
him. That type of discrimination made it hard for Richard to become successful because almost
every caucasian American viewed him in that sense. Also, in a way Richard's family were an
obstacle because they were so brainwashed by the status quo that, they put that anger and confusion
on him. While Richard was a rebellious kid that pressure that came for his family, disrupted his
working ethics because now he has to deal with the status quo and discrimination, and also his
dysfunctional family's anger. It is understandable for the family to be angry of how they were
getting treated by society but inflecting that anger on a child like Richard missed with his childhood.
Not only but also, Richard faced a great struggle of poverty. Most of the time Richard went to sleep

"Gone too soon" are the words often used following the tragedy of death. Within the past few years,
black Americans have been specifically targeted as victims of racial hate crimes. In 2016, more than
250 black Americans were killed by police (Huffington Post). The deaths of black Americans have
become an epidemic, one that will have lasting effects on society. One effect is that of the "Black
Lives Matter" movement which was birthed after the murder of an unarmed black teen in Sanford,
FL. On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by a neighborhood watchman while
walking home from a convenience store. In "Skittles for Trayvon: A Diminishing Suite in Verse",

At this point, the references to the real–life occurrence become obvious. On the night of his death,
Trayvon was walking from the store holding an Arizona tea and a bag of Skittles. These objects
were apparently mistaken for weapons by the neighborhood watchman, although it was made
evident at the crime scene and in court that Trayvon was unarmed. The Arizona tea can and the bag
of Skittles became the poster images for the injustice that black Americans believed was bestowed
upon Martin, as these blatantly harmless articles led to his untimely death.
The fact that the Singing Boy is supposedly descended from the Volcano people relates to the belief
that black people were the first people on Earth. Truthfully, there is evidence to support that all life
began in Africa. The poem "! ! Spirit of Africa" supports this claim. It reads "For Africa is a/land of
spirits,/they occupy dirt,/soil, trees, flowers/fruit, food that feeds;/(...)all the people of its
land./Africa believes,/that before time,/before,/things began,/there was nothing,/save for a void..."
(lines 29–43). The Volcano people were natural and bore the necessities; then came the Water people
(who can be seen as white people) that used what was provided by the Volcano people in order to
produce their own goods.
As the poem continues, it is stated that the Singing Boy is lost in song, and wanders onto the lands
of the Troubled Man, someone who is descended from the Water

Black Of Black And Black Americans
One aspect of life for black people in the United States of America that has always remained
consistent is white racial hostility. A history of slavery, segregation, unequal protection of the law,
and second class citizenship inflicted by a white power structure that dominates on a national level
has created a harmful reality for black people. Every aspect of black public life must either be under
the control of or in opposition to white supremacy. Every state–sanctioned institution works to use
black bodies as tools for the production of capital in any form, yet simultaneously exploits and
maltreats black people so that they cannot fully participate in and benefit from the systems which
they are indoctrinated to invest in. White America leverages its money, comfort, and tyranny on
Black America. It is for this reason that separate spaces are not merely essential to the viability of
black counter–publics but inherent to their existence, since black involvement in white spaces and
systems typically leads to black assimilation or marginalization. Within these black counter–publics,
hip hop and mass connection through new media forms direct attention and allow for personal
expression which shapes black worldview and public opinion, but this simply makes black people
more comfortable with their oppression and less involved in politics.
Black counter–publics first emerged at the end of the Civil War during Reconstruction, a time period
when black agency and involvement in

  • 3. The Diversity Of Black Americans Diversity is now, more than ever before, at the forefront of the American conversation. Black people have been slowly but surely making gains in today's society and in ways that were not possible before. African Americans are more educated and more affluent, and more important as consumers than ever before. By 2017, they are expected to have a spending power of 1.3 trillion dollars (Resilient, 2013). Young, influential, and brand loyal, this group should be the target of many companies. Interestingly enough, there has not been much of an effort on the part of marketers to appeal to this growing group. Additionally, the lack of diversity as well as the alienation of black people in the media is not doing much to allow a wider range of companies to reach them. Black Americans are a powerful group, and smart marketers will put a focus on investing in them to increase their market share. It is important that people learning about the black customer understand the diversity of the black population in America. Since 1990, the black immigrant population has nearly doubled, with 3.8 million living in the country now. This is almost 9% of the black population. This is only going to continue – "by 2060, the U.S. Census predicts that one out of six U.S. blacks...will be immigrants" (Increasingly Affluent, 2015, p. 12). This is important from a marketing standpoint – this group of blacks come from very different backgrounds and can identify as black in a very different way than black ... • 5. Black People And The American Revolution Throughout history, black people have been oppressed. As far back to the Middle Passage and American Revolution. In this essay, I am going to investigate the ways black people resisted their ill–treatment. I will do this by investigating different time periods between the Middle Passage and the American Revolution so that we may find trends. From my investigations, we see in what ways and for what reasons their resistance varied by their time and location in history. Additionally, we will be able to see how their resistance calmed as they became more familiar to the land, and as they began to see America as home. In the Middle Passage, Africans were captured and sold by other Africans of their native land. They were then packed on a ship as if they were cargo. The conditions on that ship were unsanitary and of poor life quality, that many were struck with various illnesses. When many of the slaves aboard felt their growing despair, they attempted to resist their oppression by ending their lives so that they may mess with the slave business. This is evident in The Making of African American, pg. 63, where we read that: "Some slaves...were determined to destroy themselves. They waiting the right moment and threw themselves into the sea and the waiting sharks. When the crew––determined to protect its valued cargo––blocked the way with nets and other barriers, slaves starved themselves." This quote shows us that during the beginnings of slavery, at the time of the Middle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Black American Political System "We should seek not a world where the black race and white race live in harmony, but a world in which the terms black and white have no real political meaning."Andress Coales shows us the disgusting world today. Society says blacks are treated unfairly through life and other certain things in life. The countries in today's world are continuing to make changes for the blacks to The blacks are starting to believe that the changes are going to start being made, but some think changes have already been made. In an article Blacks and Whites are Worlds Apart mentions , "Blacks, far more than whites, say black people are treated unfairly across different realms of life, from dealing with the police to applying for a loan or mortgage. Some of these judgments are the way there names are, the way they live in this society, and even the way they look. One of these reasons of judgement has caused many problems towards the white and blacks and it is the way there names are. Many blacks and whites have the biggest judgments towards each other by their names. In society today there is far more reasons to judge someone other than their name and we are trying to stop it. According to Sendhil Mullainathan, "we can isolate the effect of race to some degree, we randomly used stereotypically African–American names (such as "Jamal") on some and stereotypically white names (like "Brendan") on others." However, communities all around have had judgment towards whites and blacks, such as getting a job and having an interview with the different colors of race. The judgments aren't only there color, but of the way they look. These judgments that have been told and done because of a different color of race trying to work for a living or the way they look and think they can't be trusted has caused many issues and society is trying to solve the problem so other races can work for the opposite race. Sendhil Mullainathan believes, "Others contend that they are merely the tip of the iceberg, highlighting that skin color still has a huge effect on how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Stereotypical Images Of Mexican Americans And Black Americans Stereotypical Images of Mexican Americans and Black Americans in the contemporary media? Angel Garcia Bakersfield College In today's society judging races and ethnic groups have left stereotypical images on them. Stereotypical images are seen all over, even in contemporary media. Hispanic Americans and Black Americans are two ethnic groups that I've recognized on having that stereotypical image in the contemporary media. Hispanic Americans and Black Americans are left with harm because of these stereotypes that have been shown in the contemporary media, for example in the television shows George Lopez and Everybody Hates Chris. It seems to be that stereotypes are being less focused on or just being allowed because of the humor they bring out in those television shows. Hispanic Americans are often stereotyped in today's society. Stereotypes that are said about Hispanic Americans include: The lazy Mexican, the Greaser, drug dealers, and gang bangers. These Stereotypes leave an image on all the Mexican Americans as being bad people. The media has been playing a big part in showing stereotypes but we tend to ignore them because they use it in a way were comedy is being introduced. For example, the television show George Lopez involves a Mexican American family going through their daily routines in the city of Los Angeles, where the majority of the population are Hispanics. In the George Lopez show, George Lopez plays the father role and every night when he gets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Black American Motherhood In the context of the many worries that Black American mothers must relentlessly carry for their daughters' safety, you [Emily Bernard] claim that "hope" is what drives you to release your daughters into the world and cease the rage you experience each time you hear about a young African–American being murdered. However, in response to your article "Between the World and Me: Black American Motherhood", I would say that not only should you continue to carry "hope", but it is also crucial that you have a desire to incite change. Given that you are a professor of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Vermont, you could also initiate serious discussion about race among your students that could then hopefully carry over to the rest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When you referenced Ta–Nehisi Coates' article "Letter to My Son", I was terrified by his experience with his son when you reiterated, "Ta–Nehisi Coates took his son, not yet 5, to see a movie on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. As his son made his way off the escalator, a white woman pushed him and said, 'Come on!' Chaos ensued. There was a black parent's rage and a white man's threat to have the black parent arrested" (Bernard 1–4). This incident forced me to reflect on the dominance that white people have held over black people throughout our country's history, and it is sickening to know that there are still people around who are willing to impose this ideology upon others. I hold even more sympathy for Black American mothers due to America's extensive history of oppressing African–Americans. This is evident given the many years they have been subjected to prejudice and violence on top of the fact that they were coerced to leave their homeland and serve as slaves in America and then repeatedly battle just to gain equal rights with white people. For these reasons, I do not hold any disagreements with your fears and that you have every right to believe that your daughters could be a target due to their skin color given our country's brutal history. Nonetheless, if we are going to resolve this predicament, then we need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Differences Between Black Americans And White Americans There has never been two men who fought for the same cause yet had two completely different views such as Martian Luther King and Robert Williams. These two men strived to bring equality to Black Americans. King believed in peaceful protest that made lawmakers and legislation realize that there was an issue that needed and had to be addressed in order to bring about social equality. Williams on the other had believed that a personal war was the only way to "fix" the issues between Black Americans and White Americans. Martian Luther King Jr. was born and raised in Atlanta to a Baptist church going family. King's father was an intimidating man who was quoted for saying that he "would make something out of [Martian] even if he had to beat him to death" while "whooping" King one day as a child. But still King was inspired by his father's challenging nature towards others ignorance. For example King tells about when he was a boy his father and him were pulled over and the police officer referred to King Sr. as "boy". So King Sr. pointed to Martian and snapped, "that is a boy, I am a man." King remembered every time someone referred or called him a "nigger" and watched how poorly his fellow Black American was treated as second–class citizens. As King grew older he joined the church as a preacher. King went on to study many types of people and ideas ranging from Marxism to forms of Christianity to Gandhi. • 15. Essay On Black American Stereotypes The media in our lives has the strongest impact on our everyday conversations, actions, judgments and perception on society as a whole. Without our modern day technology the world would result to judgments based on their own personal beliefs, not being so easily persuaded by others. The contemporary media portrays Black and Hispanic Americans in numerous positive ways, but more so in a negative light. The stereotypes that these minorities have been given not only affect the community as a whole, but the personal lives of each individual. Although the media can be used for good, the captivating movies, news stories, and documentaries seem to have a negative outcome. The medias focus on Black and Hispanic Americans has not always been bad, but the stereotypes that have developed over the decades shed a negative light on these two racial and ethnic groups. A common stereotype for Black Americans is the over criminalization of black men. Although criminals come in every shape, size and race black men are targeted as criminals more than any other race. The media recently came out with the movie "Straight Outta Compton" which focused on the real life events of young rappers now. White policemen harass and attempt to ... The Africans were held captive in the US from 1555 to 1865 when the slave trade was rampant (Tishkoff, et al., 2009). The African Americans had numerous titles such as Negroes and Colored, but the terms are no longer accepted in English and currently people of the ethnic group are referred to as African Americans or Blacks. • 19. African Americans And Black Crime A challenge I think African Americans families face in the 21st century is black on black crime. Just recently in the Brown vs Ferguson case African Americans properties were destroyed, vandalize, and burned after the verdict of officer Wilson not being indicted. I thought instead of the African Americans going against each other they should have showed more respect and honor for each other. The Micheal Brown case was a tragic loss to the black community, especially after the lost of Trayvon Martin having the same verdict. African Americans as a whole could have shown a little more of a positive response to each other. Black on black crime that occurs when the poorest, weakest members of a population turn on each other out of desperation. African Americans come against peers and neighborhoods who are black. African Americans are the number one race in America by a percentage of 49% of crime within each other, followed by American Indians. Today African Americans are about 13 percent of the population and continue to be responsible for an inordinate amount of crime. The black arrest rate for most offenses; include robbery, aggravated assault and property crimes as you seen in recent justice cases such as Brown and Trayvon. • 21. Black American Justice System The Justice System Hinders Black Americans More Than Slavery Slavery is a taboo and often neglected subject in the American education system. It is occasionally brought up throughout the year, only to be explained in "depth" in February during black history month. These events have disfranchised the black American to a level of sub–humanity that has never been seen before. The way that black Americans have been disfranchised after slavery has destroyed the black psyche even worse than slavery has. During slavery, the African had no choice but to accept their subhuman status. Freedom was a slave's main priority and/or aspiration; it was something that was often discussed on a day to day manner. Although it was a central topic, Slaves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With slavery, African Americans were conditioned to accept their status as "other". Whites made no effort to hide their disdain for black people. In this new system however, African Americans were given the illusion that they were free, so they resisted speaking out on such inequality due to the fact that they were told that they should be grateful for their freedom. The current system works so that since birth, African Americans, males in particular, are pushed towards aggression and dysfunction. The family life of the disadvantage and poor which primarily feature African Americans has become dramatically more complex and unstable over the last few decades. In 2010, 72% of black children were born to single unwed mother and many of these fathers are incarcerated (Newsone, 2010). Minorities are also given harsher time for petty crimes than their Caucasian counterparts, which also increases the time away from their children. There are more black men that are in prison or jail, on probation or on parole than were enslaved in 1850 (Alexander, 2010). We have failed to bring the vast majority of the offspring of the slaves into the culture of Western Civilization, the culture of Abraham Lincoln. While part of the black community is Christian and has been socialized for years, the dominant black majority in America is led by the Democratic Party and rejects Western Civilization. In the school year 2011–2012, there were 1,840 school closures in the United States and those closed schools enrolled and educated approximately 301,000 in the previous school year (National Center for Education Statistics, 2014). Though school closures widely affect all students, school closures have an even greater affect on Black students educational experiences. Bush's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) federal policy. Both Clinton and Bush administrations regulated freedom of choice within their educational policies. Clinton's Goals 2000 increased standards for student scores within core subjects. Legislation targeting Title I, required States and school districts to "turn–around" low–performing schools, and in 1993, public charter schools increased to over 2, 000 (www.clinton5.nara.gov). Bush's No Child Left Behind's structure demanded high–stakes testing and created provision for privatization of public education, as well as "school choice ." No Child Left Behind not only increased the Clinton's strong accountability disposition, but it also superimposed a new set of accountability rules that would adversely affect public schools (Porter, Linn, & Trimble, 2005). One significant requirement of NCLB is that each state must adopt challenging academic content standards and challenging student achievement standards. Additionally, states must establish Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals for each year from 2002 to 2014–that would culminate in the 2014 goal that all American students would be at or above the proficient student academic achievement standard (P.L. 107–110, 2001). • 27. Black Identity And The American Dream "The soul was the body that fed the tobacco, and the spirit was the blood that watered the cotton, and these created the first fruits of the American garden" (Coates 104). In Between the World and Me," and within this quote alone, Ta–Nehisi Coates argued not only the importance of black identity, but also how and why black identity was so deceivingly shaped in response to the dark history behind it. Through Coates' recollections and fair warnings to his son, the relationship between black identity and "The Dream" becomes clearer. In spite of the "white supremacist" trademark that comes stamped upon "The Dream," Coates provides impermeable evidence as to why black identity is not only more invested in history than white identity, but more importantly why it is the investment to be made in "The American Dream." The history of black identity is commonly associated with slavery, violence, and segregation. While Coates brought these associations to the table aware of how unjust they were, he found that the more alarming correspondence lied within the reasons why. It is undeniable that history has given "blackness" various underlying connotations–impoverished, uneducated, and as being the "below of [the] country" (Coates 106). The influence began as early as the onset of the Civil War, when "stolen" black bodies were an accepted form of currency and even America's finest leaders were experts of the trade (Coates 101). Being born as a Jamaican, my definition of culture before coming to the United States was different. I do not believe that culture affects the way a person learn, teach, or operate in society. Particularly with the Black Campus Movement of the 1960's, as the first BSU and Black Studies department formed at San Francisco college (now a university) in 1966, through this movement such centered learning would advance the Black community nearby but they too ran into trouble when people in leadership positions weren't conscious, so as they were operating against the interests of the community and against service, they harmed the progress that the Black community could possibly make. Therefore, setting up Black Studies departments on majority white campuses (since everyone doesn't live close to HBCU's) was to teach and spread a consciousness that incorporated what needed to be done for the betterment of Black folks hence through social responsibility implementation. Rogers also makes it clear that service learning and community involvement paired with education started with Black churches and colleges, and that "in West Africa as well as ancient Egypt, social responsibility was developed through the educational process of initiation" (1122). Being Smart, Black, Young And American In my early 20s, before I was cast on 30 Rock and while I was still trying to find my way as an actor, I attempted a very odd social experiment: I would often walk into audition rooms using an English accent. I'd introduce myself and engage in light pre–audition conversations with a standard upper–class British dialect. I would then launch into the scene with my regular speaking voice, and after the scene was over, I'd return to the British for my salutations. The truth of the matter was this: I did it because I was frustrated. Being smart, black, young and American had become a liability. People seemed to think I was some kind of walking oxymoron. Don't' get me wrong, a person who is being discriminated against doesn't have a responsibility to educate or inform their discriminator (it is never the job of the oppressed to stop their own oppression), but I suggest that we merely can't disconnect from the event; for disconnection breeds further ignorance. When I was told I talked white, my natural instinct was to get offended, think the racial divide was hopeless, and then passive aggressively speak in a British accent. What I've come to understand, however, is that in these moments, revealing more about myself is exactly what's needed. My response to being told I "talk white" has now become a non–confrontational, genuine question: "How do you think black people are supposed to talk? Because for me, every black person I've ever known talks like I do." This is either met with defensiveness or apologies or a genuine desire to understand the bias – but it is always met with some form of engagement. I try to treat it as an open door to a further dialogue. Some people walk through that door, some people don't. But through it all, I get to remain steadfastly myself. I don't see that response as being more tolerant in the face of racial bias. It's not about taking the high road. I see it as avoiding a diversion from the road I've already chosen. They have at various times in United States history been referred to as African, coloured, Negro, Afro–American, and African–American, as well as black. The black population of the United States has grown from three–quarters of a million in 1790 to nearly 30 million in 1990. As a percentage of the total population, blacks declined from 19.3 in 1790 to 9.7 in 1930. A modest percentage increase has occurred since that time. Slavery in America The earliest African arrivals were viewed in the same way as indentured servants from Europe. This similarity did not long continue. By the latter half of the 17th century, clear differences existed in the treatment of black and white servants. A 1662 Virginia law assumed Africans would remain servants for life, and a 1667 act declared that "Baptism do not alter the condition of the person as to his bondage or freedom." By 1740 the SLAVERY system in colonial America was fully developed. A Virginia law in that year declared slaves to be "chattel personal in the hands of their owners and possessors . . . for all intents, construction, and purpose whatsoever." In spite of numerous ideological conflicts, however, the slavery system was maintained in the United States until 1865, and widespread antiblack attitudes nurtured by slavery continued thereafter. Prior to the American Revolution, slavery existed in all the colonies. The ideals of the Revolution and the limited profitability of slavery in the North resulted in its abandonment in northern states during the last quarter of the 18th century. Black History Of American Education "The history of American education abounds with themes that represent the inextricable ties between citizenship in a democratic society and popular education."(Anderson) As a result of their skin color, blacks had always been discriminated against in US society. As a result, blacks had become jaded to the harshness of inequality and could not find a plausible way to gain equal footing because they were taught that they were lesser beings than whites. From late 19th century to the end of the 20th century, blacks have championed for their civil rights as a result of the initial education and basic civil rights granted to them after constitutionally written freedom from slavery. However, blacks were still inhibited from becoming full members of society by discriminatory racial stereotypes and laws imposed on them by US society such as Jim Crows laws. Black history in the US, as a result, is immensely complicated and unique as is portrays the struggle of a race to elevate to an equal status of whites in US society, a struggle that continues to this day. However, oppression caused by Jim Crow laws stimulated the formation of black political parties that unified the race, notably the NAACP, and by utilizing the education given to the blacks during the Reconstruction Era and beyond, they formed a sense of black culture and identity, advancing their racial position in society. As Coates confronts the ongoing struggle of being black in America, he shows how it has shaped his life and American history, many times at the expense of black lives. Coates poignantly asks and attempts to answer difficult questions that plague modern society today, one of the questions being, "what should Americans do to treat black Americans as fairly as white Americans?" White and black Americans are deeply divided on views of race relations in America. The racial divide in America is fueled by the social inequality in the school systems, justice system, and poverty in general. Many African immigrants have only read or heard about racial discrimination, but have never faced it first–hand. They admire what Black Americans have done, but when they come to this country they and maintain a separate identity from native–born blacks. Because of the separation, whites were more willing to serve Africans and Black Americans thought African immigrants were receiving better treatment from society (Reddick, 1998). Being Black in America is already a complicated existence, but being a Black immigrant is a very different existence. Black Americans often do not know the country their ancestors came from and feel more American than African or Caribbean. African immigrants are often in an identity complex because often they are not considered Black enough for the Black community and not being American enough for the white communities. Since the birth of our nation, a notion of "race" has been rooted to our core personas. In fact it can enforce stereotypes of class and careers. It is evident that Black Americans are un–proportionally living in poverty and without easy access to achievement. This harsh reality is not helped by our media–driven society. In a world so heavily integrated with mass media hysteria, we scroll past posts that can have the countering effects of degradation or empowerment through our identities. While movements of Black Power can be painted through media, it also not hard to see the difference between the ways in which Black Americans are manipulated within the lens of media. They are portrayed as fitting a certain stereotype – uneducated, violent and intriguingly exotic. For example, while women in general face the enemy of "sex sells", black women have this experience intensified. These women are portrayed as exotic sexual beings. They are objectified and degraded with the intent of women of color being seen as sexually gratifying, but nothing more. The parallels to the mindset one hundred years ago is uncanny – black women, black men and black children are seen as objects to appropriate and use for the media's benefit. While Richard was a rebellious kid that pressure that came for his family, disrupted his working ethics because now he has to deal with the status quo and discrimination, and also his dysfunctional family's anger. It is understandable for the family to be angry of how they were getting treated by society but inflecting that anger on a child like Richard missed with his childhood. Not only but also, Richard faced a great struggle of poverty. Most of the time Richard went to sleep hungry because of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Death Of Black Americans "Gone too soon" are the words often used following the tragedy of death. Within the past few years, black Americans have been specifically targeted as victims of racial hate crimes. In 2016, more than 250 black Americans were killed by police (Huffington Post). The deaths of black Americans have become an epidemic, one that will have lasting effects on society. One effect is that of the "Black Lives Matter" movement which was birthed after the murder of an unarmed black teen in Sanford, FL. On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by a neighborhood watchman while walking home from a convenience store. In "Skittles for Trayvon: A Diminishing Suite in Verse", Lillian Bertram paints a vivid depiction of the events leading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this point, the references to the real–life occurrence become obvious. On the night of his death, Trayvon was walking from the store holding an Arizona tea and a bag of Skittles. These objects were apparently mistaken for weapons by the neighborhood watchman, although it was made evident at the crime scene and in court that Trayvon was unarmed. The Arizona tea can and the bag of Skittles became the poster images for the injustice that black Americans believed was bestowed upon Martin, as these blatantly harmless articles led to his untimely death. The fact that the Singing Boy is supposedly descended from the Volcano people relates to the belief that black people were the first people on Earth. Truthfully, there is evidence to support that all life began in Africa. The poem "! ! Spirit of Africa" supports this claim. It reads "For Africa is a/land of spirits,/they occupy dirt,/soil, trees, flowers/fruit, food that feeds;/(...)all the people of its land./Africa believes,/that before time,/before,/things began,/there was nothing,/save for a void..." (lines 29–43). The Volcano people were natural and bore the necessities; then came the Water people (who can be seen as white people) that used what was provided by the Volcano people in order to produce their own goods. As the poem continues, it is stated that the Singing Boy is lost in song, and wanders onto the lands of the Troubled Man, someone who is descended from the Water ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Black Of Black And Black Americans One aspect of life for black people in the United States of America that has always remained consistent is white racial hostility. A history of slavery, segregation, unequal protection of the law, and second class citizenship inflicted by a white power structure that dominates on a national level has created a harmful reality for black people. Every aspect of black public life must either be under the control of or in opposition to white supremacy. Every state–sanctioned institution works to use black bodies as tools for the production of capital in any form, yet simultaneously exploits and maltreats black people so that they cannot fully participate in and benefit from the systems which they are indoctrinated to invest in. White America leverages its money, comfort, and tyranny on Black America. It is for this reason that separate spaces are not merely essential to the viability of black counter–publics but inherent to their existence, since black involvement in white spaces and systems typically leads to black assimilation or marginalization. Within these black counter–publics, hip hop and mass connection through new media forms direct attention and allow for personal expression which shapes black worldview and public opinion, but this simply makes black people more comfortable with their oppression and less involved in politics. Black counter–publics first emerged at the end of the Civil War during Reconstruction, a time period when black agency and involvement in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
