Difficulties and problems of a teacher
of English
• In Pakistan the same status is not given to
English as it enjoyed in Pakistan before
Independence . Now we have included English
in our curriculum as second language or as a
language of practical utility.
Reason and Problems of a teacher of
English in school
1. Class-Room Conditions
• These conditions include the number of
students in a class. The physical arrangement
for the class , teaching materials such as
chalks, black board, teaching aids, library etc.
• 2 Lack of Audio-Visual Aids
• There is a dearth of even simple visual aids
like flash cards , charts , black board , pictures.
PROBLEM OF GOOD ENGLISH
TRACHER
3. The two vital factors in a second-langauage
learning situation are student and teacher. Student
who have a better standard resent it. The teacher
does not bother to classify the aims and objective
of teaching English.
4 Faulty Method of Teaching English:
• In pakistan schools, teacher are still using the old
fautly Translation-cum-Grammer method of
teaching The new approches – structural and
situational are not popular with our teachers.
5 Unsuitable Text-book
• The text-books which are prescribed for our
students are not suitable and attractive.
Student read it only to pass in the
examination. The topics which are in the
syllabus do not give any practical knowledge
to the student.
6 Defective examination system
• The examination in English puts a lot of premium
on rote learning rather than on language master.
Our student are not good to speak fluently in
English.
7. Defective evaluation procedure
• Evaluation in English is another great problem in
our country . Our evaluation procedures is purely
based on essay type question. Hence it could not
measure the entire development of the child in
English.
8.Unproductive supervision
• The supervisory staff is far from qualified to
maintain and improve teaching standard in
English.
9.Lack of Suggestive Correction
• The exercise books of students lack in
suggestive correction. All the exercise of
students should be corrected thoroughly and
the correct forms for mistakes must be
written.
Problems of teaching English in
Pakistan
• We have listed them as follows:
• Old fashioned type of benches and desks
• Bad lights
• Noise
• Lack of aids of all kinds.
Problem of an English teacher
1. English is radically different from Pakistani language.
English differs from Pakistani languages far more than it
differs from French, German or Russian. The very forms
of letters, their writing from left to right and the
constructions of sentences are basically different.
2. New names and new language sense to be developed.
The mother tongue stands as an obstacle in the way of
learning a second language because it is so firmly seated
in the mind of the child.
3.LAPSES INTO VERNACULARISM
Our Childern learn to express themselves in
their mother tongue as it is natural with all the
Childern all the world over.
4.ENGLISH NOT A MERE FOREIGN LANGUAGE
In pakistan English is not to be treated merely as
a foreign language. As already stated, its status
as a second compulsory language has been
recongnised.
Problem of an English teacher
5. The basic need of the teacher
• 1 A knowledge of the best and most effective
methods to use.
• 2 An understanding of the purpose of each
method he uses.
• 3 Perseverance and courage to carry on the
work with good grace.
Problem of an English Teacher
6.English teacher has to fight his battle single handed:
A vast majority of our students come from homes where
neither the parents nor the other members of the family
know english. Even where they are educated they are tied
up elsewhere and have no time to lend a helping hand to
their schools.
7.Lack of time and resources:
• Teacher tries to make the best use of his time but due
to lack of proper equipment he finds it very hard ;to
practise the modern techniques.
8. Specialisation in English:
Conclusion
• English is basically different from our national
language both in writing and speaking.
• The student has to develop a new language sense
and a new mode of thought and expression.
• The English teacher lacks time to adopt the
modern method of teaching.
• The English teacher has to fight his battle single
handed without being helped by the parents or
other teacher in the school.
