3. A natural disaster is the effect of the earth's natural
hazards, for example flood, earthquake or landslide.
They can lead to financial, environmental or human
losses. The resulting loss depends on the vulnerability
of the affected population to resist the hazard.
If these disasters continue it would be a great danger
for the earth.
12. 1 2 Jan 201 0 : Earthquake that hit H aiti's capital city Port au Prince,
effected m ore than 3 m illion people.
26 D ec 2004 : Tsunam i hit Sum atra coast in the Ind ian ocean. Alm ost
250,000 d ied , prod uced by an und erwater earthquake with a power of 9.1
on the Richter's scale.
August 2005 : H urricane K atrina hit N ew O rleans and the Gulf of
M exico. Sixth strongest and fifth m ost d estroyable hurricane killed 1 800
people and com pletely erased N ew O rleans from the m ap.
8 O ct 2005 : An earthquake located near the Ind ia-Pakistan bord er took
86.000 lives. It d estroyed 600.000 hom es and m ad e 3 m illion people
hom eless.
1 2 M ay 2008 : An earthquake with 7.9 M agnitud e killed 69.000 people
in Sichuan Province in C hina. The earthquake m ad e d am age estim ated
85 billion d ollars.
13. N atural d isasters are not incapable of being guarded
against. The m od ern technology has given enough
gad gets to people for forecasting, and lessening
heavy d am ages. O nly requirem ent is that people
m ust take interest in getting awareness about the
safeguard m easures. It is also im portant to see that
we do not contribute to natural d isasters by polluting
the environm ent and by not living in resonance with
nature.
