Hamilton County Judges Hamilton County Judges Effectiveness Study Prepared by Team 32
Prepared for Dr. Norman Lewis BA 2300 Statistics 1 This study is designed to provide the efficiency
status of 38 Hamilton County Judges. The study looked at the number of cases disposed, appealed
and reversed. The information gathered is from data for the Common Pleas Court, Domestic
Relations Court and Municipal Court. Two of the judges, Patrick Dinkelacker and Timothy Hogan
served in two different courts during the three year study period. This report will show the efficiency
of all 38 judges as a whole and as individuals. There were 182,908 total cases disposed during the
study with 2,368 were appealed and 320 decisions being reversed. Based on ... Show more content

The Great Illusion
The Great Illusion
According to the Thomas Jeffery Hogan and R. David Mautz, Jr., "Earnings per share (EPS) is
considered by some to be the single most important item in the financial statements" (Hogan and
Mautz, Jr., 1991, p. 50). Reasons for this are that they are known to be disclosed in statements of
public companies as well as a figure auditors refer to. However, earnings per share may not really be
the number investors should look at. Concepts Statement #2 requires that in order for information to
be useful, it must be relevant and reliable. There seem to be problems with EPS due to the way it is
computed and disclosed. Such problems consist of determining what constitutes common stock ...

Since stock options and warrants are always common stock equivalents, the EPS computation of a
particular company is conditional as to whether the company contains options and warrants. To
compute EPS, take net income and subtract dividends and divide this number the number of
common stock shares outstanding. The effective yield is used to determine a common stock
equivalent. To determine common stock equivalency, 2/3 of the prevailing corporate Aa bond must
be greater than the effective yield. According to Lola Woodard Dudley, "It is hardly surprising that
the effective e yield test correlates poorly with conversation, for the test is based on arbitrary
assumptions and contains rules unrelated to economic activity" (Dudley, 1985, p. 106). The Aa
bonds involve very little risk, and if a company has a large amount of risk then when they do the 2/3
computation, their effective yield will be higher than this number. Therefore, their securities will not
meet the test of being common stock equivalent. The type of disclosure required depends on
whether a company is simple or complex. A simple company shows primary EPS because it only
contains common stock outstand and common stock equivalents. Fully diluted is used for a complex
company in that it contains the primary information as well as convertible bonds and preferred stock
or common stock options and warrants. Both of these methods show how the company may be

The Effects Of Frequency And Neighbourhood Density On Word...
A study into testing the effects of frequency and neighbourhood density on word recognition.
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of frequency and neighbourhood density on
access to the mental lexicon. This had been done through a written version of the Gating task using
PowerPoint to display the letters. Participants would write on a sheet given to them recording their
spontaneous thoughts as to what the word would be. Once the data had been collected it was
converted into inferential statistics for analysis. There appeared to be a correlation between amount
of guesses and the variables frequency and neighbourhood density. High frequency high
neighbourhood density (HFHN) words were more likely to be recognised faster than the low
frequency low neighbourhood density (LFLN) words. This study suggests that frequency and
neighbourhood density are two considerable factors in word recognition. To further investigate this
study, it would benefit researching into different nationalities to find out whether or not this is solely
an English language trait or cross–languages.
Introduction
Frequency and neighbourhood density have received considerable attention due to their connections
between themselves and word recognition. Investigating whether or not these aspects of Linguistics
affect word recognition is important because it contrasts the idea of lexical access models that
assume serial comparison of a lexical access code with items in lexical

Mccrae & Costa's Five-Factor Model
McCrae & Costa's Five–Factor Model
McCrae &Costa's Five–Factor model of personality has become the dominant conception of
personality structure (1985, 1987, and 1997). The Big Five Personality traits are said to be
predictive of some kinds of behaviour such as honesty, job performance, and procrastination.
Critically discuss the relevance of this understanding of personality to Occupational Testing.
McCrae and Costa's Five–Factor model of personality is said to be predictive in certain behaviours
such as honesty, job performance and procrastination. This Five–Factor model applies to
organisational testing because personality is a crucial part in understanding the interests and abilities
of an applicant within a business. There have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Agreeable personality traits have been known to be associated with a constructive approach to
dealing with conflict but agreeable people have also been known to be aggressive (Weiten, 2007).
Neuroticism relates to people who are anxious or hostile (Weiten, 2007). People who score high in
this personality trait have been known to over re–act to stressful situations (Weiten, 2007).
Organisational psychology "focuses on role related behaviour, group pressure, commitment to
organisations and patterns of communication" (Sibaya & Malcolm, 2003). In order for an
organisational psychologist to determine this behaviour certain organisational testing or
psychological assessments need to take place. A psychological assessment is a "standardised
measure of a sample of a person's behaviour" (Weiten, 2007). Psychological assessment is one of the
oldest and most focussed areas of industrial–organisational psychology (Weiten, 2007).
Psychological assessment focuses on an individual's difference in behaviour and their individual job
performance and then develops ways in which they can measure or predict such performances.
Testing enables psychologists to select people for jobs, assess one's potential and develop people.
Testing can often lead to labelling of people and selection for jobs, promotions or training has often
been made in accordance to these labels.

Summary Of The Film Muriel's Wedding
The film Muriel's Wedding is set in the fictional town of Porpoise Spit, Australia and follows the
journey of self–discovery of the young woman Muriel Heslopp. In searching for marriage, the idea
which she thinks will validate her as a person, she finds herself. In the film, the character of Rhonda
helped me to understand the important message that friendship acts as a catalyst for self–discovery.
The director PJ Hogan uses the techniques of music, cinematography and dialogue to help
communicate that idea.
The first technique, music, is used in mainly in the setting of Hibiscus Island, the fictional
honeymoon destination in which Muriel meets Rhonda for the first time since Year 10. Muriel and
Rhonda are performing in a talent show, with the song Waterloo by ABBA. The song symbolises the
real Muriel, who is present in this scene. Rhonda encourages Muriel to be herself, confidently. This
allows Muriel to truly understand who she really is, the beginning of her journey of self–discovery.
The music is particularly significant, with lyrics in the song such as "knowing my fate is to be with
you" which represents the friendship between Rhonda and Muriel. The song Waterloo is significant
as a whole too, because it's about a battle, which symbolises the interior battle of Muriel between
her true self and the self who conforms to societies expectations. Rhonda singing the song with
Muriel foreshadows how Rhonda will help Muriel through her internal battle and help her
eventually reach self–discovery.
The next technique, which is used in several different scenes is cinematography. In the scene in
which Muriel is trying on wedding dresses behind Rhonda's back, cinematography is used to
communicate the message that friendship acts as a catalyst for self–discovery. Just before Rhonda is
about to leave for rehabilitation, she enters Muriel's room and finds a photo album full of
photographs of Muriel in various wedding dresses. The next shot is and Extreme Close–Up (XCU)
on Rhonda's confused face. Her face appears worried and quite puzzled as she tries to figure out
what was going on. This XCU shot shows how much Rhonda cares about Muriel and the extent to
which Rhonda cares about Muriel's wellbeing. Later in that scene,

Factors Influencing Personality Psychology Based On...
Numerous studies have been conducted on each factor and their subsets within the Five Factor
Model; however, most studies have focused on extraversion and neuroticism and their contributions
to understand an aspect of personality due to the ease in which each factor can be observed. The
study of the Five Factor Model personality trait, conscientiousness, and its sub factors began to gain
recognition as a meaningful and practical personality trait in the 1990s, and have been extensively
studied and will continue to be studied throughout the twenty–first century. This paper examines
how conscientiousness and its sub factors affect personality psychology based on scholarly literature
and scientific research that thoroughly explains the role conscientiousness functions within
personality.
General Information Conscientiousness, at a moderate level, is defined as an individual who has a
penchant to be responsible and reliable (R. Hampson, 2000). This individual is also has proneness to
pay great attention to detail and shows persistence and discipline regarding work that could lead to
high achievement (D. Barone, M. Hersen, V. Hasselt, 1998; R. Hoyle, 2010; M. Mikulincer, P.
Shaver, 2014). Efficiency of time use and orderliness are independent variables that tend to correlate
specifically with the need for high achievement as well as the use of self–discipline, self–efficacy
and constraint of irresponsible actions (D. Mroczek, T. Little, A. Lang, 2006; M. Mikulincer et al.,

"If four things are followed – having a great aim, acquiring knowledge, hard work, and perseverance

Lee illustrates two families who are equally poor, yet have different social statuses because of the
way they act in society. She uses juxtaposition and character foil to emphasize the extreme contrast
between the Cunninghams and the Ewells. One family is eager to acquire knowledge and work hard

Uses of Personality Testing
Personality Testing Personality testing is used in many areas of psychology. Organizational
psychologists use personality testing to determine fitness for employment positions; clinical
psychologists may use the tests in the treatment of their clients; and school psychologists as well as
school counselors may use the tests in career counseling with their students. In addition, individuals
may use these test to discover information about their own personalities. While the use of these is
fairly widespread; the validity of these assessments remains a controversial issue, especially since
they typically require the subject being tested to self–report a response. This paper will compare two
such assessments: a version of the Myers–Briggs Types Inventory (MBTI), the Reinhold Cognitive
Style Inventory, and the Big Five inventory which assesses the Big Five Personality Traits. Finally,
it will examine the convergent validity of these two inventories. The MBTI sorts people into groups
based on their preferences for mental processes and mental orientations (Reinhold, 2011). Reinhold
explains that there are two mental processes for which people have preferences. The first is how we
take in information, and the second is how we make decisions. According to the MBTI, people
either take in information by sensing (S) or by intuition (I), and people make decisions by either
thinking (T) or feeling (F). The two mental orientations for which we have preferences are Energy

In the years following the Civil War, the American economy was suffering from extreme disorder.
However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, important leaders of American industry arose,
essentially transforming the American financial system from chaos to efficiency. These powerful
men shaped America into a world superpower and the country's economy sparked jealous across the

His goal was to spread efficiency and organization throughout every company he owned and
operated. Through Rockefeller's efforts, the chaos of the oil industry was transformed into order and
stability. His influence in this industry led to the creation of a myriad of products for the public
which only bettered their ways of life. Similar to Carnegie, Rockefeller also fostered lower prices
for oil, making light cheap and available to the public as the oil was mainly utilized in kerosene
lamps. His Standard Oil Company served as precursor of America's economic success both at home
and on an international level.
Morgan, along with Carnegie and Rockefeller, worked to make the American economy organized
and systematic. In fact, Morgan effectively bailed out the American financial system two times. At
one point, the U.S. Treasury seemed on the brink of failure as it "didn't have enough gold in reserve
to meet its bills" (27). J.P. Morgan provided the nation with $62 million, saving the American
economy. Later on, the nation faced a financial problem, so destructive that it could have led to a
depression. The situation was so horrific that a trust company nearly collapsed, which would have
promoted widespread panic. Morgan convinced several of the nation's foremost financers to lend
money in an effort to save the trust, in turn saving the country from a financial catastrophe. Morgan

Toxic Leadership Essay
Leadership is that process in which one person sets the purpose or direction for one or more other
persons and gets them to move along together with him or her and with each other in that direction
with competence and full commitment (Elliott, 2009). Leadership is supposed to guide people to
attain a particular set vision. Motivation is fundamental in the process of leadership as if there is no
motivation there will be laxity among the people involved. It is also a critical scenario for leadership
to have followers; this will infer a relationship between leaders and followers (Frank, 2003).
Emotions of a leader are so important in this aspect of leadership. It is through emotions that the
leader will be categorized as 'toxic' or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those leaders that are frequently nervous, annoyed and irritated can be emotionally toxic leaders.
Many leaders from this category are often overwhelmed by these negative emotions and they cannot
even be aware of the negative consequences they produce (Goleman, 2005).
1. Toxic leadership A toxic leader can be defined as leader motivated by egocentrism, self–interest
and show no concern for those below him, and his actions negatively affect the organizational
climate. They exalt themselves in turf protection, fighting and controlling their followers instead of
uplifting them. Toxic leaders are very destructive and they only focus on short term
accomplishments and they destroy their followers to achieve those objectives. Their decisions are
made hasty and they change their decisions without any justified rationale. Mostly, they lazy around
only to make hasty decisions when it is too late and the crisis is already in place. Such decisions
have no time to be thought over and therefore, they are continuously changed throughout
implementation so as to work effectively and may even be altered completely thereby making the
whole process messy (Seeger, 2005). According to Lipman–Blumen, toxic leadership is also
influenced by the type of followers a leader has. Followers limit the leadership qualities of a leader
when they become unruly and rebellious prompting him to act arrogantly and rude. He points out
that leaders are human and are imperfect

Running Head: PSYCHOLOGY OF LEADERSHIP
Psychology of Leadership
Introduction
Social psychology, the major branch of modern psychology, is a science that studies and understands
the nature of human mind and his mental system when it is at work in social life. Leadership is a
psychological as well as a social process attributed by the culture and afforded by the organizational
constraints and opportunities. It is underpinned by psychological concepts like motivation,
perception, emotion, memory & learning and by relational aspects, which include mutual influence,
power, identity, group dynamics and organization processes.
The purpose of writing this paper is to explore the ideas about the psychology of leadership that has
always been an enduring topic in the field of social psychology. The social psycholological study of
leadership has several interesting and important directions and this is the reason that this topic is
considered important not only in the social and organizational psychology but also in the business
community.
This paper will highlight the world's leading psychologist's thinking and research towards leadership
who examined leadership as the psychological process (Bligh and Meindl, 2005) .This paper will
cover the diversity of topics covered in this field including; psychological concept of leadership;
major key psychological theories underpinning leadership behavior, power and influences; cognitive
process that categorize individuals as leaders and

Industrialization Causes Corruption in Businesses
"No man can be a good citizen unless he has a wage more than sufficient to cover the bare cost of
living, and hours of labor short enough so that after his day's work is done he will have time and
energy to bear his share in the management of the community, to help in carrying the general load.
We keep countless men from being good citizens by the conditions of life with which we surround
them. We need comprehensive workmen's compensation acts, both State and national laws to
regulate child labor and work for women," said 26th president of United States Theodore Roosevelt
as he was explaining how industrialization had ruined people's lives ( Colby 515). Industrialization
is defined as the large–scale introduction of manufacturing, advanced technical enterprises, and
other productive economic activity into a society. Industrialization is a huge aspect of society and
especially in America. After the American Civil War in 1861, a lot southern plantation owners were
living in poverty because they lost their land. Emancipated slaves were also living in poverty
because most them didn't have a job, but as industrialization grew in America, more people were
attracted to the cities up North. A lot of southerners and emancipated slaves traveled up North
because of job opportunities. But this proved to be a horrible mistake. These people were working in

Early Grief Theory Essay
J. William Worden's adaptation of early grief theories focussed on the role of therapists and
counsellors in caring for grieving individuals. He described the grieving process in terms of four
tasks to complete rather than four phases to progress through. The first task he labeled "Accepting
the Reality of the Loss" in which the individual attempts to accept their loss both intellectually and
emotionally. The second task, "Working Through the Pain of Grief" involves working through the
intense emotions often associated with grief, such as anger, sadness, and guilt. The third task,
"Adjusting to an Environment in Which the Deceased is Missing," comprises a series of
adjustments, which Worden defines as external, internal, and spiritual adjustments. ... Show more

Shuchter and Zisook (1993) explored the concept that relationships exist on many levels, for
example an actual relationship, a symbolic relationship, and imagined relatedness. When a death
occurs, only the actual relationship ceases to exist, while the other levels of the relationship remain
and may even become stronger (as cited in Klass, Silverman, & Nickman, 1996, p. 39). Many
studies showed individuals making an effort to maintain attachment through various means,
including speaking to the deceased, visiting the gravesite, or keeping meaningful objects (Corr et al.,
2009; Klass et al., 1996; Wright & Hogan, 2008). These studies lead Hogan and DeSantis (1992) to
explore their Grief to Personal Growth Theory, which conceptualized an individual progressing

John P Morgan Essay
After the American Civil War, the industry of American began to grow and new technologies and
ideas were developed. John Pierpont Morgan, an American financier and banker, helped with the
financing of many industries such as the railroad, steel, and electric industries. However, he used his
wealth and power to control and buy out businesses. Morgan was a robber baron who is a person
who profits off of an industry or people by means of ruthless and unfair business practices for their
own personal gain. John P. Morgan, who was born in a wealthy family, started his career as a banker.
He later became a financier and helped invest in multiple industries such as Carnegie Steel, General

US economy by his monopolies were a source of concern for the people. In 1893, a financial crisis
in America that threatened the U.S. Government Treasury's gold reserve was relieved by Morgan.
Morgan formed an organization to help resupply the government's gold reserve (The Editors, ¶ 4).
However, his purpose to help resupply the government's gold reserve was not only to protect the
economy, but his monopolies as well. If the gold reserve was to be depleted, it would have caused a
detrimental problem for Morgan's profits from his monopolies. Even though Morgan attempted to
maintain his monopoly in corporate America, he came face to face with Roosevelt's decision to

Case Study #3
Case Problem: Hamilton County Judges
Three major court systems in Hamilton County were reviewed in depth, and case information from
the Common Pleas, Domestic Relations, and Municipal Courts were reviewed. This study compiles
information from 38 Judges who had a total of 182,908 cases presented to them over a three year
period. This study shows the number of cases that were disposed, appealed, and reversed. This study
is to aid in determining which judges have a greater proficiency trying cases and their verdicts stand
as rendered, rather than the verdicts being appealed or reversed. Each judges case load was reviewed
and the statistics were determined by how many cases have been appealed, reversed or a ... Show

J.P. Morgan and Ragtime Essay
John Pierpont Morgan:
The turn of the century in American, when E.L. Doctorow's novel Ragtime is set, was a time marked
by rapid technological developments and industrialization. These years also brought a heavy flood
of immigrants as well as an increasingly urban American landscape. Technological advancements
enabled increased efficiency and mass production. However, Doctorow clearly brings into question
the consequences of this new technology for the average American worker. J.P. Morgan's discussion
with Henry Ford about the assembly line's innovations brings this debate to the front. Doctorow
writes, "From these principles Ford established the final proposition of the theory of industrial
manufacture – not only that the parts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Junius Morgan wrote to the company asking for a position for his son and advertising the fact that

when his father requested one, he did receive a promotion in the firm later in his career. In 1860,
Morgan left Duncan, Sherman and founded J. P. Morgan and Company to act as an agent for his
father's business. When Junius Morgan died in 1890, J.P. became head of the London house.
Pierpont now was able to control all the dealing between the New York based firm and their

J.P. Morgan was again called on to reorganize railroads in the east. He reorganized the Chesapeake

Essay on Leadership Reflections: Aspects of Dysfunctional...
Leadership Reflections: Aspects of Dysfunctional Leadership Based on assigned readings (ORG515
Module 3), this journal entry reflects on three prevalent forms of dysfunctional leadership (Vecchio,
2007) that potentially impact the author's effectiveness as a leader – groupthink, aversive behavior,
and destructive narcissism. Proceeding from a definitional overview, the discussion identifies
aspects of these dysfunctional behaviors that are relevant to the author. This entry then considers
appropriate remedial actions, including consideration of the relative effectiveness of a study
partner's strategies, for ameliorating deficiencies in the author's leadership behaviors.

The underlying causes of groupthink arise from the psychological need of group members to
maintain "self–esteem and emotional equanimity" during times of stressful decision making (Janis,
2007, p. 166).
Aversive Behavior Similar to groupthink, aversive leadership behaviors also emerge in response to
interpersonal and organizational stress. Pearce and Sims (Thoroughgood et al., 2010) define aversive
leadership as ". . . a brand of management relying on coercive power through specific use of
intimidation tactics and reprimands" (p. 648). Such tyrannical and abusive behaviors destroy leader–
member trust, which results in diminished performance, job satisfaction, and organizational
citizenship behaviors of followers (Bligh, Kohles, Pearce, Justin, & Stovall, 2007). Aversive
leadership often arises from the mutual reinforcement of biased perceptions of both follower and
leader intent (Harvey et al., 2006; Hogan & Hogan, 2001) – a process somewhat analogous to the
realization of negative self–fulfilling prophecies (Vecchio, 2007).
Destructive Narcissism However, unlike groupthink and aversive behaviors, which depend on the
exercise of power in social interactions with others, destructive narcissistic behaviors arise from
within the construct of a leader's individual personality traits (Maccoby, 2004; Rosenthal &
Pittinksy, 2006). According to Rosenthal and Pittinksy (2006), "Narcissistic leadership occurs when
leaders' actions are principally

The Causes Of Greed During The Gilded Age
Greed during the Gilded Age was not good, but was still very evident in strikes and lockouts,
politics, and monopolies. Greed is an intense and selfish desire to be better and have more than
others and it can often cause people to get hurt and be put into dangerous situations. During the
gilded age, economy was expanding and most people were motivated by wealth and their own
greed. While greed may be good for the greedy, it is not good for those who are in the way of the
greedy and those who just simply are not greedy. There was a clear divide between bosses and
workers which led to a certain level of disdain between the two; a disdain that could be set off very
easily by the actions of one another. Businesses were booming and economy was expanding, so
business owners had to find a way to stay in business and not let other companies take over. To do
this, they often resorted to cutting wages or even lockouts. The lockouts forced workers to either
quit or agree to a pay cut, but only cutting wages gave workers reason to strike. This greed from
both sides caused conflict which sometimes led to violence. As strikes went on, strikers and bosses
became more desperate. Strikers resorted to violence and bosses called in higher authorities–strikes
were declared illegal, militias were sent in, and people got hurt. As a result of The Great Upheaval,
100 people died and 1,000 others were imprisoned (37a. The Great Upheaval). Although strikes
almost never turned out the way they

Performing Job Analysis on Complex and Senior Job Roles:...
TOPIC: "Discuss the extent it would be worthwhile performing job analysis on complex and senior
job roles" Since the employment displacement of World War II, employers have attempted to
simplify hiring practices. While originally positions were decided through accomplishment and
experience, modern employers have begun using placement tests to determine through alternative
means who will make excellent leaders within the company. While this practice has proven effective
for lower–level placement positions, modern companies now attempt to use these same measures for
the placement of higher positions including executives. Regardless of two decades of testing, it
seems as though the companies who use this technique are actually at a disadvantage with regard to
the actual outcome. In fact, the turnover rate for executives is proving to be very large. It is this
anomaly that will be discussed and explored within this paper. Introduction Current business
dynamics render the analysis and application of accurate job descriptions deplete of vital
information. Companies must devote attention to defining and articulating job requirements when
hiring senior level executives in order to ensure proper placement of senior candidates. Instead of
creating a brief description of the executive role, those responsible for hiring the candidates should
evaluate each candidate on every aspect of their ability. In fact search committees rarely consider
any depth within the strategic position

Discuss whether the industrial leaders of the late nineteenth century are more accurately described
as "captains of industry" or "robber barons"?
A. Plan of Investigation
This investigation will assess whether the industrial leaders, such as, Andrew Carnegie, John
Pierpont Morgan and John Davison Rockefeller were perceived as captains of industry or robber
barons. In order to evaluate this claim, the investigation will analyze their major contributions to
American Society; how they treated their workers in the factory; and why people questioned their
honesty because of the techniques they used to eliminate their competitors. Mostly secondary
sources were used, as well as some primary sources. Two of the sources used in this essay are The
Robber Barons: The Great American Capitalists by Matthew Josephson and Wisdom from the
Robber Barons: Enduring Business Lessons from Rockefeller, Morgan, and the First Industrialists
by George D. Smith which will be evaluated for their origins, purposes, values, and limitations.
This investigation does not assess any other nineteenth century industrial leaders.

J. P. Morgan's Robber Baron
Like any other "Robber Baron" during the late 1800's, J.P. Morgan was no different. He controlled
finance and industrial consolidation and was well–known for being a banker. Credited for being one
of the few to shape the U.S., Morgan did have a lust of power and greed, but that doesn't stop him
from being America's leading businessman. His impact goes as far as the present with the many
companies he created. John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan was born to a New England family on April 17,
1837, in Hartford, Connecticut, being in a well–known family. "James Pierpoint was one of the
founders of Yale University, his grandfather founded the Aetna Insurance Company, and his father

But still, during the late 1800's, "much of the country's industries fell into powerful business
leaders," including Morgan. He was criticized by everyone for a couple of reasons: "he created
monopolies by making it difficult for any business to compete against his"––known as
Morganization; even though he was responsible for leading them out of the 1907 financial crisis, he
was also claimed by muckraking journalists that he "manipulated the nation's financial system for
his own gain," as thousands of workers die in his steel factories, and suffered higher casualties than
even the Civil war. This earned Morgan the "occasional distrust of the federal government as well."
But those reasons didn't stop him to be a man who ended up industrializing America with his vast,
growing, and substantial companies and financial expertise that just saved the railroads and subdued
the country's financial panics. If he also had not fought alongside with Thomas Edison with their DC
(Direct Current) against Tesla and Westinghouse's AC (Alternating Current), the way we use
electricity wouldn't be the same today.
In conclusion, J.P. Morgan is considered more of a "Captain of Industry" for today's modern age
than a robber baron. America would have been a whole different country without his contributions
towards society, especially if he didn't start the many companies and industries during his

The Effects Of Emotional Intelligence On Student 's...
The theory of emotional intelligence has emerged as a standard of intelligence over the last few
decades and as a result numerous studies into emotional intelligence have taken place in many
different countries under many different circumstances. Researchers have been conducting studies,
concentrating on whether a student's emotional intelligence can have an effect on their academic
performance. Possessing a high emotional intelligence or a low emotional intelligence can affect a
student's academic performance. Some of the studies into emotional intelligence on a student's
academic performance will be looked at in this essay. This essay will firstly discuss what factors can
impact on a student's low emotional intelligence, followed by reviewing two studies where the
results of a low emotional intelligence on a student's academic performance were evident. Next this
essay will discuss what factors contribute to a student's emotional intelligence that can affect
positive academic results and then review three studies that have resulted in showing that a healthy
emotional intelligence can positively affect a student's academic performance.
There are numerous factors impacting on a student's emotional intelligence which can result in poor
academic performance. Salovey and Mayer (1990) "define emotional intelligence as the subset of
social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions,
to discriminate among them and to use

Judicial Review Proceedings Introduction ============ Judicial review proceedings exist to
ensure that lower courts and administrative bodies do not act beyond or at variance with their
inherent powers. If they do act in such a way, the reviewing court[1] will take action to rectify.
Where discretionary powers given to administrative bodies are abused, the court will usually grant
an order of certiorari quashing the decision. Generally, this will only be done if some aspect of the
decision making process is corrupt and not because the court merely disagrees with the conclusion
arrived at[2]. If the decision is set aside, then the facts of that particular case have cumulated in the

Than from 1860 to 1864 he acted as an agent in New York for his fathers firm renamed J.S. Morgan
and company upon Peabody's retirement in 1864. In 1871 he partnered with the Drexel's of
Philadelphia to form the company of Drexel, Morgan and company. After the death of Mr. Drexel

Morgan had a habit of taking over financially troubles businesses that weren't profitable and then
reorganizing or underwriting their securities to restore the profitability, a process that some came to
know as "Morginization". A few examples of this are the reorganizations of the General Electric and
also International Harvester. J.P. Morgan also re organized more than 15 railroads. One of his most
notable financial wins was during the depths of the 1865 depression when he gathered several other
bankers together and was able to provide over $65 million is gold (that's over 3.5 million ounces) on
the condition that the government would provide a private sale of government bonds to him and his
syndicate. Was it really ethciacal to try to make the most profit possible off the government during a
time when the government was relying heavily on the support of big bankers? Regardless J.P.
Morgan and his syndicate did make a huge profit on this

J.P. Morgan Essay
J.P. Morgan
When people talk about J.P. Morgan, they often refer to one man. The J.P. Morgan dynasty was in
fact a combined effort of three generations of Morgans. In 1838, American businessman George
Peabody opened the London merchant banking firm that would establish the roots of the House of
Morgan. In 1854, Junius S. Morgan became the partner of George Peabody and eventually took over
the firm in 1864, renaming it J.S. Morgan & Co. At the age of twenty four, J. Pierpont Morgan
inherited his father's business, renamed the business to J.P. Morgan & Co., and made a point to
consolidate the firm's American and European interests. Under Pierpont's authority, J.P. Morgan ...

Including two world wars, J.P. Morgan Jr. also led the company through the great depression. In an
appearance before Congress in 1933, J.P. Morgan Jr. defined a business philosophy for his firm:
"At all times the idea of doing not only first–class business, and that in a first–class way, has
been before our minds. We have never been satisfied with simply keeping within the law, but have
constantly sought to act that we may fully observe the professional code, and so maintain the credit
and representation which has been handed down to us from our predecessors in the firm."
A significant bill in congress was the Banking Act of 1933, a.k.a. Glass–Steagall. It was this act,
which separated commercial and investment banking, that also divided the House of Morgan. As a
result, Harry Morgan, one of Jack Morgan's sons, along with two Morgan partners and about 25
employees left to form the investment bank Morgan Stanley.
In 1943, when Jack Morgan died, Thomas Lamont became the chairman of the company. This
marked the first time since 1864 that a Morgan had not managed the firm.
One of the contributing factors to the success of J.P. Morgan was its financial involvements in
military events of the past. J.P. Morgan established its position as a future world power in 1870
when it extended a ten million pound loan to the French government during the Franco–Prussian

Hamilton County Judges Case
CASE PROBLEM: HAMILTON COUNTY JUDGES Hamilton County Judges try thousands of
cases per year. In an overwhelming majority of the cases disposed, the verdict stands as rendered.
However, some cases are appealed, and of those appealed, some of the cases are reversed. Kristen
DelGuzzi of the Cincinnati Enquirer conducted a study of cases handled by Hamilton County Judges
over a three–year period ( Cincinnati Enquirer, January 11, 1998 ). Shown in Table 2.5 are the
results for 182,908 cases handled (disposed) by 38 Judges in Common Pleas Court, Domestic
relations Court, and Municipal Court. Two of the judges (Dinkelacker and Hogan) did not serve in
the same court for the entire three–year period. The purpose of the newspaper's study was to ...

The Magical Elasticity of Peter Pan Essay
Question:
Explore Peter Hollindale's claim that Peter Pan 'retains its magical elasticity and its ongoing
modernity' (Reader 2, p.159), with reference to different versions since its original production.
Peter Pan – whether as a stage play, a book, a stage musical, a live–action film or a pantomime – has
endured for more than a century as arguably the most famous, and certainly most influential, stories
for children. First performed in 1904, the fairytale drama has been addressing the ever–changing
boundaries between childhood and adulthood ever since. Educationalist and literary critic Peter
Hollindale – in A Hundred Years of Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 159) – asserts that "the play retains its
magical elasticity and its ongoing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This first production included a number of scenes which were cut from later performances, and the
1908 scene entitled 'An Afterthought' was performed just once during Barrie's lifetime. Published in
1957, it has, since the 1980s, become the standardized ending to the play which we now know.
Other alterations to the original script were, according to Nicola J. Watson in her Introduction to
Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 143), down to the actors themselves. She contends there was improvisation,
especially during Hook's soliloquy, by the actor Gerald du Maurier, while the notion of Peter as
untouchable resulted in the change of actress playing the part. Already we can see the adaptability
and elasticity of Peter Pan – the 1928 play script is not an accurate record of how the play was
initially performed, but rather it is the play which Barrie wanted his audience to see in print. The
play text includes a substantial cross–over from the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, and also omits a
number of scenes which were initially played, many largely down to improvisation.
At the time of the play's performance, during the Edwardian era, it was noted by theatre historian
Tracy Davis that Peter Pan was first produced "at a transitional moment in stage history", which was
characterized by the waning influence of pantomime, the emergence of the Christmas fairy play, and
the prevalence of realism in straight drama (EA300 Study Guide, p. 145). In

Jp Morgan In The 20th Century
In the 20th Century there was many important people who changed the way the America is today.
John Pierpont Morgan once said, "If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it." It is
assumed amongst most people that John never had to ask the price of anything because he had so
much money. J.P. Morgan was a significant figure in America's 20th Century because of his role in
saving the economy, funding huge companies and creating a wealthy bank that is still around today.
In this world it is hard to make yourself somebody important if you don't come from the right
background. Well the Morgan family was always wealthy. J.P. was born into the home of Junius and
Juliet Morgan in Connecticut. He grew up with three siblings, two sisters and one brother (J.P.
Morgan). J.P. attended high school in Boston and after graduation went to Europe. He knew one day
he wanted to take his father's business over, so he went abroad to learn German and French to be
able to expand his future business to the global scale. John married a woman abroad who was bound
to die of tuberculosis 4 months later, and then married Frances Tracy after her ... Show more content

Morgan has even impacted acts that saved the government many times all because Morgan gave
them the idea. Congress knew that Morgan and his money wouldn't be around forever so they had to
make an act that would make sure they had their own money to secure the Stock Market in the
future if similar situations were to arise. Morgan also bought unsafe rifles from the government,
reconditioned them and sold them back to the government for a huge profit. These rifles were then
used in the Civil War. If Morgan hadn't given the Government safe and technological rifles then the
outcome of the Civil War could've been different. They might not have been able to defeat the South
with unconditioned and unsafe rifles (Cross, Mary). J.P. Morgan played a major role in saving 20th
century America from many catastrophic

Essay JP Morgan
JP Morgan John Pierpont Morgan is considered one of the founding fathers of the modern United
States economy. He was an industrial genius that is accredited with the founding of many companies
including General Electric and AT&T. However, Pierpont is looked upon as a saint and demon the
same. He received a honorary degree from Harvard university that read: "Public citizen, patron of
literature and art, prince among merchants, who by his skill, wisdom and courage, has twice in times
of stress repelled a national danger of financial panic." But Robert LaFollette, the Wisconsin
progressive, saw him as "a beefy, red–faced thick–necked financial bully, drunk with wealth and
power." Despite conflicting opinion on his persona, his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The firm of Duncan, Sherman & Co. was the American representation of the George Peabody
Company. He wrote to the company asking for a position for his son and advertising the fact that his
son had "many admirable qualities for a worker" To the company, J.P brought an energetic and
enterprising spirit, mathematical wisdom, great confidence and a useful tie with the English banking
world. In less than three years Morgan went from clerk to cashier in the company. Although, he was
denied a promotion when his father requested one, he did receive a promotion in the firm later in his
career. In 1860 Morgan left Duncan, Sherman and founded J. P. Morgan and Company to act as an
agent for his father's business. Young Morgan had his hands full at time putting through sales of
American securities on behalf of his fathers anxious English clients, who doubted if the Union
would survive and wanted to unload their American holdings in. In 1864 Morgan joined up with
another former businessman of Duncan, Sherman & Company.
Charles Dabney and Morgan started their own company named Dabney, Morgan & Co. Morgan's
business continued to grow as he intensively involves his company in more trade and commerce
transactions. In 1871 Dabney retired and Anthony J. Drexel became Morgan's new senior partner.
Drexel was already the head of the Philadelphia investment bank Drexel & and Company. The new
company Drexel Morgan & Co. became one of the largest and most

Abdul Kalam
President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
"Dreams float on an impatient wind, A wind that wants to create a new order. An order of strength
and thundering of fire." –– from a poem written by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is the undisputed father of India's missile program. He has breathed life into
ballistic missiles like the Agni and Prithvi, which put China and Pakistan well under India's missile
range. It is too exhausting to track Dr Abdul Kalam's achievements to date. In the '60s and '70s he
was a trail blazer in the space department. In the '80s he transformed the moribund Defence
Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad into a highly motivated team. By the '90s
Kalam emerged as the czar of Indian science and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After that, he undertook a preliminary design study on Human Centrifuge. He designed and
developed a vertical takeoff and landing platform, and Hot Cockpit. Three years later, the
Aeronautical Development Establishment(ADE) was formed in Bangalore and he was posted there.
At ADE, Kalam served as a senior scientific assistant, heading a small team that developed a
prototype hovercraft. Defence Minister Krishna Menon rode in India's first indigenous hovercraft
with Kalam at the controls. But for reasons never explained, the project which would have been a
considerable international achievement in those days, was not encouraged. This was probably one of
the reasons why he moved out of ADE in 1962 and joined India's space program.
During 1963–82, he served the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) in various capacities.
Here Kalam initiated Fibre Reinforced Plastics(FRP) activities, then after a stint with the
aerodynamics and design group, he joined the satellite launch vehicle team at Thumba, near
Trivandram and soon became Project Director for SLV–3. As Project Director, he was responsible
for carrying out the design, development, qualification and flight testing of 44 major sub systems.
The project managed to put Rohini, a scientific satellite, into orbit in July 1980. He was honoured
with a Padma Bhushan in 1981. Agni intermediate range ballistic missile

  • 3. The Great Illusion The Great Illusion According to the Thomas Jeffery Hogan and R. David Mautz, Jr., "Earnings per share (EPS) is considered by some to be the single most important item in the financial statements" (Hogan and Mautz, Jr., 1991, p. 50). Reasons for this are that they are known to be disclosed in statements of public companies as well as a figure auditors refer to. However, earnings per share may not really be the number investors should look at. Concepts Statement #2 requires that in order for information to be useful, it must be relevant and reliable. There seem to be problems with EPS due to the way it is computed and disclosed. Such problems consist of determining what constitutes common stock ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since stock options and warrants are always common stock equivalents, the EPS computation of a particular company is conditional as to whether the company contains options and warrants. To compute EPS, take net income and subtract dividends and divide this number the number of common stock shares outstanding. The effective yield is used to determine a common stock equivalent. To determine common stock equivalency, 2/3 of the prevailing corporate Aa bond must be greater than the effective yield. According to Lola Woodard Dudley, "It is hardly surprising that the effective e yield test correlates poorly with conversation, for the test is based on arbitrary assumptions and contains rules unrelated to economic activity" (Dudley, 1985, p. 106). The Aa bonds involve very little risk, and if a company has a large amount of risk then when they do the 2/3 computation, their effective yield will be higher than this number. Therefore, their securities will not meet the test of being common stock equivalent. The type of disclosure required depends on whether a company is simple or complex. A simple company shows primary EPS because it only contains common stock outstand and common stock equivalents. Fully diluted is used for a complex company in that it contains the primary information as well as convertible bonds and preferred stock or common stock options and warrants. Both of these methods show how the company may be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Effects Of Frequency And Neighbourhood Density On Word... A study into testing the effects of frequency and neighbourhood density on word recognition. Abstract The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of frequency and neighbourhood density on access to the mental lexicon. This had been done through a written version of the Gating task using PowerPoint to display the letters. Participants would write on a sheet given to them recording their spontaneous thoughts as to what the word would be. Once the data had been collected it was converted into inferential statistics for analysis. There appeared to be a correlation between amount of guesses and the variables frequency and neighbourhood density. High frequency high neighbourhood density (HFHN) words were more likely to be recognised faster than the low frequency low neighbourhood density (LFLN) words. This study suggests that frequency and neighbourhood density are two considerable factors in word recognition. To further investigate this study, it would benefit researching into different nationalities to find out whether or not this is solely an English language trait or cross–languages. Introduction Frequency and neighbourhood density have received considerable attention due to their connections between themselves and word recognition. Investigating whether or not these aspects of Linguistics affect word recognition is important because it contrasts the idea of lexical access models that assume serial comparison of a lexical access code with items in lexical ... Mccrae & Costa's Five-Factor Model McCrae & Costa's Five–Factor Model McCrae &Costa's Five–Factor model of personality has become the dominant conception of personality structure (1985, 1987, and 1997). The Big Five Personality traits are said to be predictive of some kinds of behaviour such as honesty, job performance, and procrastination. Critically discuss the relevance of this understanding of personality to Occupational Testing. Organisational psychology "focuses on role related behaviour, group pressure, commitment to organisations and patterns of communication" (Sibaya & Malcolm, 2003). In order for an organisational psychologist to determine this behaviour certain organisational testing or psychological assessments need to take place. A psychological assessment is a "standardised measure of a sample of a person's behaviour" (Weiten, 2007). Psychological assessment is one of the oldest and most focussed areas of industrial–organisational psychology (Weiten, 2007). Psychological assessment focuses on an individual's difference in behaviour and their individual job performance and then develops ways in which they can measure or predict such performances. Testing enables psychologists to select people for jobs, assess one's potential and develop people. Testing can often lead to labelling of people and selection for jobs, promotions or training has often been made in accordance to these labels. The importance of psychological ... • 11. Summary Of The Film Muriel's Wedding The film Muriel's Wedding is set in the fictional town of Porpoise Spit, Australia and follows the journey of self–discovery of the young woman Muriel Heslopp. In searching for marriage, the idea which she thinks will validate her as a person, she finds herself. In the film, the character of Rhonda helped me to understand the important message that friendship acts as a catalyst for self–discovery. The director PJ Hogan uses the techniques of music, cinematography and dialogue to help communicate that idea. The first technique, music, is used in mainly in the setting of Hibiscus Island, the fictional honeymoon destination in which Muriel meets Rhonda for the first time since Year 10. Muriel and Rhonda are performing in a talent show, with the song Waterloo by ABBA. The song symbolises the real Muriel, who is present in this scene. Rhonda encourages Muriel to be herself, confidently. This allows Muriel to truly understand who she really is, the beginning of her journey of self–discovery. The music is particularly significant, with lyrics in the song such as "knowing my fate is to be with you" which represents the friendship between Rhonda and Muriel. The song Waterloo is significant as a whole too, because it's about a battle, which symbolises the interior battle of Muriel between her true self and the self who conforms to societies expectations. Rhonda singing the song with Muriel foreshadows how Rhonda will help Muriel through her internal battle and help her eventually reach self–discovery. The next technique, which is used in several different scenes is cinematography. In the scene in which Muriel is trying on wedding dresses behind Rhonda's back, cinematography is used to communicate the message that friendship acts as a catalyst for self–discovery. Just before Rhonda is about to leave for rehabilitation, she enters Muriel's room and finds a photo album full of photographs of Muriel in various wedding dresses. The next shot is and Extreme Close–Up (XCU) on Rhonda's confused face. Her face appears worried and quite puzzled as she tries to figure out what was going on. This XCU shot shows how much Rhonda cares about Muriel and the extent to which Rhonda cares about Muriel's wellbeing. Later in that scene, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Numerous studies have been conducted on each factor and their subsets within the Five Factor Model; however, most studies have focused on extraversion and neuroticism and their contributions to understand an aspect of personality due to the ease in which each factor can be observed. The study of the Five Factor Model personality trait, conscientiousness, and its sub factors began to gain recognition as a meaningful and practical personality trait in the 1990s, and have been extensively studied and will continue to be studied throughout the twenty–first century. This paper examines how conscientiousness and its sub factors affect personality psychology based on scholarly literature and scientific research that thoroughly explains the role conscientiousness functions within personality. General Information Conscientiousness, at a moderate level, is defined as an individual who has a penchant to be responsible and reliable (R. Hampson, 2000). This individual is also has proneness to pay great attention to detail and shows persistence and discipline regarding work that could lead to high achievement (D. Barone, M. Hersen, V. Hasselt, 1998; R. Hoyle, 2010; M. Mikulincer, P. Shaver, 2014). Efficiency of time use and orderliness are independent variables that tend to correlate specifically with the need for high achievement as well as the use of self–discipline, self–efficacy and constraint of irresponsible actions (D. • 19. Uses of Personality Testing Personality Testing Personality testing is used in many areas of psychology. Organizational psychologists use personality testing to determine fitness for employment positions; clinical psychologists may use the tests in the treatment of their clients; and school psychologists as well as school counselors may use the tests in career counseling with their students. In addition, individuals may use these test to discover information about their own personalities. While the use of these is fairly widespread; the validity of these assessments remains a controversial issue, especially since they typically require the subject being tested to self–report a response. This paper will compare two such assessments: a version of the Myers–Briggs Types Inventory (MBTI), the Reinhold Cognitive Style Inventory, and the Big Five inventory which assesses the Big Five Personality Traits. Finally, it will examine the convergent validity of these two inventories. The MBTI sorts people into groups based on their preferences for mental processes and mental orientations (Reinhold, 2011). Reinhold explains that there are two mental processes for which people have preferences. The first is how we take in information, and the second is how we make decisions. According to the MBTI, people either take in information by sensing (S) or by intuition (I), and people make decisions by either thinking (T) or feeling (F). The two mental orientations for which we have preferences are Energy Orientation and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Toxic Leadership Essay Leadership is that process in which one person sets the purpose or direction for one or more other persons and gets them to move along together with him or her and with each other in that direction with competence and full commitment (Elliott, 2009). Leadership is supposed to guide people to attain a particular set vision. Motivation is fundamental in the process of leadership as if there is no motivation there will be laxity among the people involved. It is also a critical scenario for leadership to have followers; this will infer a relationship between leaders and followers (Frank, 2003). Toxic leadership A toxic leader can be defined as leader motivated by egocentrism, self–interest and show no concern for those below him, and his actions negatively affect the organizational climate. They exalt themselves in turf protection, fighting and controlling their followers instead of uplifting them. Toxic leaders are very destructive and they only focus on short term accomplishments and they destroy their followers to achieve those objectives. Their decisions are made hasty and they change their decisions without any justified rationale. Mostly, they lazy around only to make hasty decisions when it is too late and the crisis is already in place. Such decisions have no time to be thought over and therefore, they are continuously changed throughout implementation so as to work effectively and may even be altered completely thereby making the whole process messy (Seeger, 2005). We keep countless men from being good citizens by the conditions of life with which we surround them. We need comprehensive workmen's compensation acts, both State and national laws to regulate child labor and work for women," said 26th president of United States Theodore Roosevelt as he was explaining how industrialization had ruined people's lives ( Colby 515). Industrialization is defined as the large–scale introduction of manufacturing, advanced technical enterprises, and other productive economic activity into a society. Industrialization is a huge aspect of society and especially in America. After the American Civil War in 1861, a lot southern plantation owners were living in poverty because they lost their land. Emancipated slaves were also living in poverty because most them didn't have a job, but as industrialization grew in America, more people were attracted to the cities up North. The second task, "Working Through the Pain of Grief" involves working through the intense emotions often associated with grief, such as anger, sadness, and guilt. Shuchter and Zisook (1993) explored the concept that relationships exist on many levels, for example an actual relationship, a symbolic relationship, and imagined relatedness. When a death occurs, only the actual relationship ceases to exist, while the other levels of the relationship remain and may even become stronger (as cited in Klass, Silverman, & Nickman, 1996, p. 39). Many studies showed individuals making an effort to maintain attachment through various means, including speaking to the deceased, visiting the gravesite, or keeping meaningful objects (Corr et al., 2009; Klass et al., 1996; Wright & Hogan, 2008). These studies lead Hogan and DeSantis (1992) to explore their Grief to Personal Growth Theory, which conceptualized an individual progressing through their intense grief and experiencing a transformation or personal growth as a result of their pain (as cited in Wright & Hogan, 2008, pp. 352–354). This theory was originally based on qualitative studies of grieving children and adolescents but subsequent studies of grieving adults revealed similar results. First, the individual experienced intense grief involving periods of intrusive thoughts and feelings followed by periods of avoiding these intrusive thoughts and feelings. Morgan formed an organization to help resupply the government's gold reserve (The Editors, ¶ 4). However, his purpose to help resupply the government's gold reserve was not only to protect the economy, but his monopolies as well. If the gold reserve was to be depleted, it would have caused a detrimental problem for Morgan's profits from his monopolies. • 40. J.P. Morgan and Ragtime Essay John Pierpont Morgan: The turn of the century in American, when E.L. Doctorow's novel Ragtime is set, was a time marked by rapid technological developments and industrialization. These years also brought a heavy flood of immigrants as well as an increasingly urban American landscape. Technological advancements enabled increased efficiency and mass production. However, Doctorow clearly brings into question the consequences of this new technology for the average American worker. J.P. Morgan's discussion with Henry Ford about the assembly line's innovations brings this debate to the front. Doctorow writes, "From these principles Ford established the final proposition of the theory of industrial manufacture – not only that the parts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leadership Reflections: Aspects of Dysfunctional Leadership Based on assigned readings (ORG515 Module 3), this journal entry reflects on three prevalent forms of dysfunctional leadership (Vecchio, 2007) that potentially impact the author's effectiveness as a leader – groupthink, aversive behavior, and destructive narcissism. Proceeding from a definitional overview, the discussion identifies aspects of these dysfunctional behaviors that are relevant to the author. This entry then considers appropriate remedial actions, including consideration of the relative effectiveness of a study partner's strategies, for ameliorating deficiencies in the author's leadership behaviors. Definitional Overview of Dysfunctional Behaviors Groupthink, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The underlying causes of groupthink arise from the psychological need of group members to maintain "self–esteem and emotional equanimity" during times of stressful decision making (Janis, 2007, p. 166). Aversive Behavior Similar to groupthink, aversive leadership behaviors also emerge in response to interpersonal and organizational stress. Pearce and Sims (Thoroughgood et al., 2010) define aversive leadership as ". . . a brand of management relying on coercive power through specific use of intimidation tactics and reprimands" (p. 648). Such tyrannical and abusive behaviors destroy leader– member trust, which results in diminished performance, job satisfaction, and organizational citizenship behaviors of followers (Bligh, Kohles, Pearce, Justin, & Stovall, 2007). Aversive leadership often arises from the mutual reinforcement of biased perceptions of both follower and leader intent (Harvey et al., 2006; Hogan & Hogan, 2001) – a process somewhat analogous to the realization of negative self–fulfilling prophecies (Vecchio, 2007). Destructive Narcissism However, unlike groupthink and aversive behaviors, which depend on the exercise of power in social interactions with others, destructive narcissistic behaviors arise from within the construct of a leader's individual personality traits (Maccoby, 2004; Rosenthal & Pittinksy, 2006). According to Rosenthal and Pittinksy (2006), "Narcissistic leadership occurs when leaders' actions are principally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. The Causes Of Greed During The Gilded Age Greed during the Gilded Age was not good, but was still very evident in strikes and lockouts, politics, and monopolies. Greed is an intense and selfish desire to be better and have more than others and it can often cause people to get hurt and be put into dangerous situations. During the gilded age, economy was expanding and most people were motivated by wealth and their own greed. While greed may be good for the greedy, it is not good for those who are in the way of the greedy and those who just simply are not greedy. There was a clear divide between bosses and workers which led to a certain level of disdain between the two; a disdain that could be set off very easily by the actions of one another. Businesses were booming and economy was expanding, so business owners had to find a way to stay in business and not let other companies take over. To do this, they often resorted to cutting wages or even lockouts. The lockouts forced workers to either quit or agree to a pay cut, but only cutting wages gave workers reason to strike. This greed from both sides caused conflict which sometimes led to violence. As strikes went on, strikers and bosses became more desperate. Strikers resorted to violence and bosses called in higher authorities–strikes were declared illegal, militias were sent in, and people got hurt. As a result of The Great Upheaval, 100 people died and 1,000 others were imprisoned (37a. The Great Upheaval). Although strikes almost never turned out the way they ... • 48. Performing Job Analysis on Complex and Senior Job Roles:... TOPIC: "Discuss the extent it would be worthwhile performing job analysis on complex and senior job roles" Since the employment displacement of World War II, employers have attempted to simplify hiring practices. While originally positions were decided through accomplishment and experience, modern employers have begun using placement tests to determine through alternative means who will make excellent leaders within the company. While this practice has proven effective for lower–level placement positions, modern companies now attempt to use these same measures for the placement of higher positions including executives. Regardless of two decades of testing, it seems as though the companies who use this technique are actually at a disadvantage with regard to the actual outcome. In fact, the turnover rate for executives is proving to be very large. It is this anomaly that will be discussed and explored within this paper. Introduction Current business dynamics render the analysis and application of accurate job descriptions deplete of vital information. Companies must devote attention to defining and articulating job requirements when hiring senior level executives in order to ensure proper placement of senior candidates. Instead of creating a brief description of the executive role, those responsible for hiring the candidates should evaluate each candidate on every aspect of their ability. By: Justine Wetten Advanced U.S. History Mr. Unis January 5th, 2015 Discuss whether the industrial leaders of the late nineteenth century are more accurately described as "captains of industry" or "robber barons"? A. Plan of Investigation This investigation will assess whether the industrial leaders, such as, Andrew Carnegie, John Pierpont Morgan and John Davison Rockefeller were perceived as captains of industry or robber barons. In order to evaluate this claim, the investigation will analyze their major contributions to American Society; how they treated their workers in the factory; and why people questioned their honesty because of the techniques they used to eliminate their competitors. Mostly secondary sources were used, as well as some primary sources. Two of the sources used in this essay are The Robber Barons: The Great American Capitalists by Matthew Josephson and Wisdom from the Robber Barons: Enduring Business Lessons from Rockefeller, Morgan, and the First Industrialists by George D. • 56. J. P. Morgan's Robber Baron Like any other "Robber Baron" during the late 1800's, J.P. Morgan was no different. He controlled finance and industrial consolidation and was well–known for being a banker. Credited for being one of the few to shape the U.S., Morgan did have a lust of power and greed, but that doesn't stop him from being America's leading businessman. His impact goes as far as the present with the many companies he created. John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan was born to a New England family on April 17, 1837, in Hartford, Connecticut, being in a well–known family. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But still, during the late 1800's, "much of the country's industries fell into powerful business leaders," including Morgan. He was criticized by everyone for a couple of reasons: "he created monopolies by making it difficult for any business to compete against his"––known as Morganization; even though he was responsible for leading them out of the 1907 financial crisis, he was also claimed by muckraking journalists that he "manipulated the nation's financial system for his own gain," as thousands of workers die in his steel factories, and suffered higher casualties than even the Civil war. This earned Morgan the "occasional distrust of the federal government as well." But those reasons didn't stop him to be a man who ended up industrializing America with his vast, growing, and substantial companies and financial expertise that just saved the railroads and subdued the country's financial panics. If he also had not fought alongside with Thomas Edison with their DC (Direct Current) against Tesla and Westinghouse's AC (Alternating Current), the way we use electricity wouldn't be the same today. In conclusion, J.P. Morgan is considered more of a "Captain of Industry" for today's modern age than a robber baron. • 69. J.P. Morgan Essay J.P. Morgan When people talk about J.P. Morgan, they often refer to one man. The J.P. Morgan dynasty was in fact a combined effort of three generations of Morgans. In 1838, American businessman George Peabody opened the London merchant banking firm that would establish the roots of the House of Morgan. In 1854, Junius S. Morgan became the partner of George Peabody and eventually took over the firm in 1864, renaming it J.S. Morgan & Co. At the age of twenty four, J. Pierpont Morgan inherited his father's business, renamed the business to J.P. Morgan & Co., and made a point to consolidate the firm's American and European interests. In an appearance before Congress in 1933, J.P. Morgan Jr. defined a business philosophy for his firm: "At all times the idea of doing not only first–class business, and that in a first–class way, has been before our minds. We have never been satisfied with simply keeping within the law, but have constantly sought to act that we may fully observe the professional code, and so maintain the credit and representation which has been handed down to us from our predecessors in the firm." A significant bill in congress was the Banking Act of 1933, a.k.a. Glass–Steagall. It was this act, which separated commercial and investment banking, that also divided the House of Morgan. As a result, Harry Morgan, one of Jack Morgan's sons, along with two Morgan partners and about 25 employees left to form the investment bank Morgan Stanley. In 1943, when Jack Morgan died, Thomas Lamont became the chairman of the company. This marked the first time since 1864 that a Morgan had not managed the firm. One of the contributing factors to the success of J.P. Morgan was its financial involvements in military events of the past. J.P. Morgan established its position as a future world power in 1870 when it extended a ten million pound loan to the French government during the Franco–Prussian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. The Magical Elasticity of Peter Pan Essay Question: Explore Peter Hollindale's claim that Peter Pan 'retains its magical elasticity and its ongoing modernity' (Reader 2, p.159), with reference to different versions since its original production. Peter Pan – whether as a stage play, a book, a stage musical, a live–action film or a pantomime – has endured for more than a century as arguably the most famous, and certainly most influential, stories for children. First performed in 1904, the fairytale drama has been addressing the ever–changing boundaries between childhood and adulthood ever since. Educationalist and literary critic Peter Hollindale – in A Hundred Years of Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 159) – asserts that "the play retains its magical elasticity and its ongoing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This first production included a number of scenes which were cut from later performances, and the 1908 scene entitled 'An Afterthought' was performed just once during Barrie's lifetime. Published in 1957, it has, since the 1980s, become the standardized ending to the play which we now know. Other alterations to the original script were, according to Nicola J. Watson in her Introduction to Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 143), down to the actors themselves. She contends there was improvisation, especially during Hook's soliloquy, by the actor Gerald du Maurier, while the notion of Peter as untouchable resulted in the change of actress playing the part. Already we can see the adaptability and elasticity of Peter Pan – the 1928 play script is not an accurate record of how the play was initially performed, but rather it is the play which Barrie wanted his audience to see in print. The play text includes a substantial cross–over from the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, and also omits a number of scenes which were initially played, many largely down to improvisation. At the time of the play's performance, during the Edwardian era, it was noted by theatre historian Tracy Davis that Peter Pan was first produced "at a transitional moment in stage history", which was characterized by the waning influence of pantomime, the emergence of the Christmas fairy play, and the prevalence of realism in straight drama (EA300 Study Guide, p. 145). Morgan has even impacted acts that saved the government many times all because Morgan gave them the idea. Congress knew that Morgan and his money wouldn't be around forever so they had to make an act that would make sure they had their own money to secure the Stock Market in the future if similar situations were to arise. Morgan also bought unsafe rifles from the government, reconditioned them and sold them back to the government for a huge profit. These rifles were then used in the Civil War. If Morgan hadn't given the Government safe and technological rifles then the outcome of the Civil War could've been different. They might not have been able to defeat the South with unconditioned and unsafe rifles (Cross, Mary). J.P. Morgan played a major role in saving 20th century America from many catastrophic ... He was an industrial genius that is accredited with the founding of many companies including General Electric and AT&T. However, Pierpont is looked upon as a saint and demon the same. He received a honorary degree from Harvard university that read: "Public citizen, patron of literature and art, prince among merchants, who by his skill, wisdom and courage, has twice in times of stress repelled a national danger of financial panic." But Robert LaFollette, the Wisconsin progressive, saw him as "a beefy, red–faced thick–necked financial bully, drunk with wealth and power." Despite conflicting opinion on his persona, his ... He wrote to the company asking for a position for his son and advertising the fact that his son had "many admirable qualities for a worker" To the company, J.P brought an energetic and enterprising spirit, mathematical wisdom, great confidence and a useful tie with the English banking world. In less than three years Morgan went from clerk to cashier in the company. Although, he was denied a promotion when his father requested one, he did receive a promotion in the firm later in his career. In 1860 Morgan left Duncan, Sherman and founded J. P. Morgan and Company to act as an agent for his father's business. Young Morgan had his hands full at time putting through sales of American securities on behalf of his fathers anxious English clients, who doubted if the Union would survive and wanted to unload their American holdings in. • 79. Abdul Kalam President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam "Dreams float on an impatient wind, A wind that wants to create a new order. An order of strength and thundering of fire." –– from a poem written by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is the undisputed father of India's missile program. He has breathed life into ballistic missiles like the Agni and Prithvi, which put China and Pakistan well under India's missile range. It is too exhausting to track Dr Abdul Kalam's achievements to date. In the '60s and '70s he was a trail blazer in the space department. In the '80s he transformed the moribund Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad into a highly motivated team. By the '90s Kalam emerged as the czar of Indian science and ... Three years later, the Aeronautical Development Establishment(ADE) was formed in Bangalore and he was posted there. At ADE, Kalam served as a senior scientific assistant, heading a small team that developed a prototype hovercraft. Defence Minister Krishna Menon rode in India's first indigenous hovercraft with Kalam at the controls. But for reasons never explained, the project which would have been a considerable international achievement in those days, was not encouraged. This was probably one of the reasons why he moved out of ADE in 1962 and joined India's space program. During 1963–82, he served the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) in various capacities. Here Kalam initiated Fibre Reinforced Plastics(FRP) activities, then after a stint with the aerodynamics and design group, he joined the satellite launch vehicle team at Thumba, near Trivandram and soon became Project Director for SLV–3. As Project Director, he was responsible for carrying out the design, development, qualification and flight testing of 44 major sub systems.
