Graphic Design For Print Module
Graphic design for print module is based on developing ideas from concept to final print ready
artwork across a spectrum of printed media. During this module I was experiencing different
methods of preparing art work for print. I went through printing history and based on my experience
with some of these media I just developed my printing skills. ANNA'S HOME by Vogue as a project
I have decided to do ANNA'S HOME by Vogue as a main project for many reasons. First reason was
Vogue by itself. Vogue was always a holy magazine to me and I have always had it as a symbol of
beauty, perfection and sophistication. My first intention was to do a fashion magazine but as many
people in my class decided for fashion type of print pieces I wanted to ... Show more content on

But what is different? My store will support young designers to sell their unique pieces, just like I
have created during my high school studies, I want to encourage celebrities to create their own
limited collection of home decorations, just like H&M collaborates with high–end fashion designers.
Also having a great brand name as Vogue as a supporter will give not just a publicity but also the
feel of quality guarantee. Many high–street brands having their home section e.g.. Zara, M&S,
H&M, Primark etc... Their collaboration with famous designers offered not just a limited collections
but also reasonable prices compare to their standard prices. So my question was why not Vogue?
Vogue inspires million of people around the world in fashion since 1892, when it was created by
Arthur Baldwin Turnere, but majority of products published in this magazine is quite expensive. My
ideas should help to Vogue to extend their influence and support young designers as well. Also
designers designing for this brand could spread their products for more reasonable prices. Identity I
have created a logo which according my opinion fully describes ANNA'S HOME by Vogue as a
brand. I have decided to use a hexagon as a main shape. Reason why is simple. If you look at the
hexagon and split it in half it will remind you a silhouette of house and the other half as a reflection.
And no matter how you rotate it it will still remind you a house. Which is a great connection to

Reflection On Presentation
Overall, I believe that my presentation went very well. This is due to the visuals used, the examples
I presented, the tone of the presentation, and my overall knowledge of the subject. Using the
feedback summary that I received from my students, I can safely say that my presentation was very
successful. However, there are a few key areas of the presentation that I would improve for future
use, and there are also a few areas that I would revise to make the application experience better for
all participants. Firstly, I believe that my presentation went well because of the visuals that I used.
The presentation was made to be viewer–friendly by using a slides template that had a speech box; I
thought that this worked well with an advertising–based assignment, since an advertisement is
supposed to be a talking point for viewers. Consequently, I tried to make sure that the backgrounds
used did not distract or detract from the content in the slides, and I believe that the minimalist
approach to colour and visuals helped in this regard. I also tried to use examples that were bold or
that made a statement, as they were supposed to grab the students' attention, and would also make
sure that the students had definitive options to consider when making their own advertisements. I
was incredibly pleased with my decision to use the text that in the body of the slides, as I found that
this text was incredibly effective and it also helped to tie together my original assessment; this was
that sans serif fonts and serif fonts can both work well in an advertisement, so long as the same fonts
are used in tandem with one another. Moreover, I also thought that my decision to have a video
example was also effective, as I then had no need to worry about having only poster–based
examples and could instead also focus on what makes a video advertisement effective as well. The
final piece of my summative presentation that I believe I did well with was the content on each
slide. The sides were created to make them easily readable while I was speaking; I thought that this
effect was also compounded by the fact that the information I discussed was quite often a bullet
point on a slide; this made it so that someone who is not reading the

The Function Of The Subdominant Text
The ratio was 1 to 3
The dominant text is the sentence saying "If you are what you eat. Be radiant". It was bold, and
place in a font that was bigger than any other words or sentences in the top center of the advertise.
Subdominant is text that is less important than the dominant one yet little bit more important than
the tertiary.
The sub–dominant text is the phrase "Grab some sunshine". It was bold similar to the dominant text,
and that it was in a smaller font and below the dominant text.
The labels on the bag of chip are tertiary.
Visual hierarchy was achieved by by placing the dominant text on top and slowly reducing the rank

The tertiary is the little text in a faded color advising the usage of this gum to the consumers and the
details about the company.
Visual hierarchy was achieved by by placing the dominant text on top and slowly reducing the rank

The text was in san serif font because based on my observations, there was no line at the ends of
each character.
Asymmetrical balance was used by placing the text and image in an order that although they don't
mirror each other but when they're divided, they look equal in weight.
Yes, the white space is located to the right side of the dominant text, the curve around the container
and below the container.
Alignment was used from left to right of the dominant text, container, sub–dominant, and tertiary. It
made the text to be in a straight line similar to a rule was placing across the layout.
The repetition of color was widely used throughout the layout; white and blue.
The ratio was 3 to 5
The phrase "is solomo really dead" is the dominant text. It was made by using the two colors – white
and blue– that were not used at all throughout the layout, and its size. Subdominant is text that is
less important than the dominant one yet little bit more important than the tertiary.
The sub–dominant is the quote by Janelle; it is recognize by me as a sub–dominant because although
it has the same color as the tertiary, its font is bigger and some of the words in it are

The Influential Typeface Helvetica
The influential typeface Helvetica, a neo–grotesque1 sans serif type design, came into being in the
early 1950s – after the Second World War. The expectation of the designers, Edouard Hoffman and
Max Miedinger was to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its
form and could be used on a wide variety of signage to remake a new identity apart from the past ().
Originally named as Neue Haas Grotesk, the typeface was changed to Helvetica in 1960. Today,
Helvetica, as an aesthetics constant, although not perfect, mastered the quantum leap in 1957 from
metal type to the digital age of word processing. Axel Langer, a curator of Islamic Near Eastern Art,
mentioned it as 'an impersonal typeface for today and tomorrow ().'
Analysis:

The original design was released by Linotype in 1957. Since its launch, the typeface had been
worked on by a variety of designers to adapt it for successive methods of composition, from hot
metal to photocomposition to digital. Given the technical limitations of methods, the character
weights, widths and spacing were inconsistent and compromised.
Neue Helvetica, as the outcome of technological changes, was designed in 1983, represents a
synthesis of aesthetics and technical refinements and modifications that resulted in improved
usefulness: a number of characters were subtly changed to be more consistent and more harmonious
with the overall design characteristics. For instance, the x–height has been adjusted to appear
visually the same in all weights. The x–heights in previous versions were all the same, but since type
tends to look shorter as it gets heavier, the new x–heights compensate for this optical illusion.
Besides, the crossbars on the lowercase 'f' and 't' were widened to increase the legibility in text.
Additionally, the Neue Helvetica family was extended to 51 weights in all, which are many more
than in the original

Super Normal Case Study
2.3 Super Normal
Being a concept to celebrate sustainability in durable design, Super Normal is a concept developed
by furniture designer Jasper Morrison and product designer Naoto Fukasawa. It refers to timeless
products that serve people without drawing attention to themselves (Fukasawa & Morrison 2012).
Calling for a re–realization of unobtrusive designs in daily life, Super Normal encourages designers
to re–acknowledge the parts people naturally think are good in design. Generally, designers or even
people who buy designs do not advocate 'normal' as a design concept, they expect something
'special' or 'novel' to catch eyes. However, the products that make a difference in daily life are
invisible (Norman, 2013, p.13). Design is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, the term 'beauty' involves both forms, shapes and the relationships between people and the
circumstances (Fukasawa & Morrison, 2012, p.110). Not that there is anything wrong with beauty in
Super Normal. On the contrary, the beauty of a product can elicit positive emotions that open up the
cognitive system and inspires people to find out creative solutions easily (Norman, 2002). Here is a
clear–cut case (Pic.10) that illustrates the aesthetic differences between Arial and Helvetica. They
both are sans–serif typefaces that are universally embraced by different applications. At first glance,
they seem extremely similar. But if designers examine the characters in each type closely, the
differences become apparent. Mark Simonson[9], an American graphic designer, produced an
analysis of these two types, showing how much more refined design of Helvetica than that of Arial
(Simonson, 2001). The primary difference between the two is the treatments of their endings. While
Helvetica is vertically cut, Arial is slightly angled. For instance, the tail of the 'a' is gently curved in
Helvetica, but not in Arial. Similarly, the top of the 't' and the ends of the strokes in the 'C' and 'S' are
perfectly horizontal in the former but slightly angled in the latter. The letterforms of Helvetica
demonstrate exactly how thoughtfully designed they are. The typeface is uniform and structurally
sound by adhering to a guide of

Successful College Writing And Writing Arguments
Successful College Writing and Writing Arguments are both textbooks I've had to spend a lot of time
reading over the course of my college adventure thus far. Some things that I've never given a lot of
thought to in regards to textbooks are questions like "Why did they put that there?", or "Why did
they choose that font, color or layout?" It is easy as a student to take for granted the thought and
planning that goes into a textbook that will aid you over the course of your learning experience. In
my writings, I would like to explore the two books from cover to end and take a look at the table of
contents along with preface, chapter layouts, colors, fonts and images/graphics/charts used within
the books comparing them against each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This textbook has a very soft, pastel yellow background. The title is a smaller, sans–serif,
cornflower blue font. About ¾ of the book cover is covered by an image that looks much like a
patchwork quilt and can give people a warm fuzzy feeling as it may remind them of grandma's
house. The cover of this book is warm and inviting telling you to come right in and see what writing
is all about.
In Writing Arguments, the reader is taken directly to the table of contents and as I mentioned before,
there is no playing about, the writers intend to get down to business right away. This is the opposite
of Successful College Writing. This textbook plunges into the preface immediately. Its writer wants
her readers to know the changes she's made to the textbook as well as the new additions. Each
section is headed by a word bubble with a lime green outline making transitions between topics very
apparent. Writing Arguments deals with the topic transitions a bit differently, simply utilizing large
bold font as each topic's header. Again, Writing Arguments comes across as serious and business–
like while Successful College Writing seems more playful and engaging. One thing both textbooks
do in the body of the preface (and the rest of the book with few exceptions) is use a serif font,
between 10–12 point sizes. According to Writing Arguments, serif fonts are "Easy to read; good for

The references (or the bibliography) section of the article is created by clicking on the Bibliography
button in the References section of the ribbon control mentioned above (or under Bibliographies in
the Document Elements tab of the ribbon control in Microsoft Word for Mac). After inserting this
section, the style of its header should be set to References.
The automatically generated References section may need to be explicitly updated to reflect further
changes done in the bibliography. When clicking on the automatically generated text of the section,
a Bibliography button will appear in the text and offer a menu with an update command.
This feature is not available in Microsoft Word 2003, so if you are reading this guide as a Word
2003 XML document, citations and the bibliography will appear as a static text and will not be
updated automatically.
4 Adding Figures and Tables
In Microsoft Word, pictures can be inserted into the document by going to Insert–>Picture–>From

recommended that you insert the picture into a text box. In order to make it into a figure and add a
caption, select the image by clicking on it and then go to Insert–>Caption... (or Insert–>Reference–
>Caption... in earlier versions of Microsoft Word). From here, you can select the position of the
caption (this should be set to below the image) and edit the text within it. Make sure

"Never grow up," is the famous quote by the immortal, fictional character himself, Peter Pan.
Kellogg's, a breakfast company, has turned Frosted Mini Wheat's ad campaign to mimic Peter Pan's
famous quote. The company has chosen, "Feed your inner kidult," as the slogan in the ad campaign

design elements, which help aid the youthful appeal, and successfully convey a message to readers.
In the ad, Kellogg's has chosen the strong color choice of orange. Frosted Mini Wheats are sold in

Mode Of Design : Art Therapy
Mode of Design
Although art therapy is a new practice in psychotherapy, art has always been a form of
communication since the beginning of the human history. Evidence is found from the finding 40,000
years ago during the Aurignacian period, on a cave painting found in EL Castillo Cave, Cantabria
Spain. Since then, art had become an instrument for self–expression and symbolism. However, it
was not until the 1940's that the therapeutic use of art was then define and develop into a distinct
discipline. Though this discipline had only arose independently in America and Europe. Andrew Hill
was the first person to refer the therapeutic application of art as therapy in England.
The question of "Is Art Therapeutic?" came into my mind after reading the book "Art as Therapy"
by Alain De Botton. Alain suggested that every piece of art has a purpose, and he had classified the
artwork in to seven categories by their purpose to the audience: Remembering, Hope, Sorrow,
Rebalancing, Growth and Appreciation. Whilst taking this in mind, I questioned about if the
existence in art therapy under psychotherapy that "Is Art Therapeutic?" Thus, with the recent trend
in adult coloring book had brought my attention in questioning "Why are adult coloring book so
popular?" "Do they really de–stress you?" "If so, why? How?" which initially I started to research
into art therapy and the aspect of questioning "Is Art therapeutic?"

The Industrial Revolution Was A Radical Process Of Social...
The Industrial Revolution was a radical process of social and economic change. Energy was a major
incentive to the agricultural society to the industrial. Until James Watt created the steam engine,
which deployed rapidly starting in the 1780s, animal and human power were the primary sources of
energy (Clare). During the last three decades of the century, electricity and gasoline–fuels engines
further expanded productivity (Clare). A factory system with machine manufacturing and divisions
of labor was developed. New materials, particularly iron and steel, became available. Cities grew
rapidly, as masses of people left suburban areas and farm tending to seek for employment in
factories. Political powers shifted away from aristocracy and toward capitalist manufacturers,
merchants, and even the working class. The growth of scientific knowledge was applied to
manufacturing processes and materials. People's sense of dominion over nature and faith in the
ability to exploit the earth's resources for material needs created confidence. Landowners were no
longer the most powerful force in the Western countries. Investment in machines for mass
manufacture became the basis for change in industry. Demand from rapidly growing urban
population with expanding buying power stimulated technological improvements, (Clare). In turn,
this enabled mass production and increased availability and lowered costs. The cheaper, more
abundant merchandise now available stimulated a mass market and even

The Logo Of Bacardi
The logo for the Bacardi brand has been changed quite a few times. It has been recently rebranded
and given a more vintage look inspired by the Bacardi hand–drawn bat designs from the early
1900s. The bat logo was chosen because from the beginning many of Bacardi's potential clients
were illiterate, and the image of the bat helped them to remember the rum. It is also used because it
stays true to the integrity of the original symbol. In Cuban and Spanish heritage bats represent good
health, fortune, and family unity. This new/old look makes Bacardi look a little bit more
sophisticated and also quirky. Far from the cartoon style that it once had, in the new logo, they got
rid of the yellow/gold colour which makes it look cleaner, it's a smaller and ... Show more content

The Bacardi logotype is much more eye–catching when looked upon and the letter design leaves
little space for flair. The accent on the 'I' reminds the consumer that it is a product from a Cuban and
Spanish culture, it also looks more bold than the previous version and along with the particular
angular quality with the two A's, this sets a reminder of their "Untamable" feature. Bacardi has
changed to this more straight style of logo that resembles that of vodka logos which almost puts
them directly opposite to the classical rum style. Usually, rum brands want their logos to create an
exotic feel with persistent modernity. This Bacardi logo is what is going to make their rum stand out,
it will be unique compared to the rest of the rum brands. Usually rum is associated with palm trees
and pirates, this simple yet memorable logo will appeal to the crowd of consumers nowadays that
accepts respectability and slick new professionalism. This way Bacardi demonstrates the
understanding that they have developed in the way that they are targeting their audience and the way
that they want to advertise their

Modern Day Era And Its Impact On Our Society
Humans have been communicating with each other as long as the human race can remember. It has
been the essences of our survival allowing us to be able to pass on our knowledge, express ideas,
and covey emotions. As time passed, we have learned different methods to communicate. For
example, we have learned to communicate with words and symbols which has helped us evolve and
form a foundation for our society. Words and symbols have allowed to us expand our ability to
communicate and the ability to express our ideas in a greater way. Typography has become one of
the most influential ways that we use to communicate in this modern–day era; and it plays a major
role in our society. Typography essentially is found everywhere – from posters to books, magazines
to signs and generally anywhere where type is involved. Now the history of type itself is quite long
which definitely states that type has come a long way and has a great history behind it. Two of the
most well–known movements in type, which introduced new principals and brought change to type,
would be the Bauhaus movement and Futurist movement. These two movements have brought forth
change and principals that have influenced the typography work in todays world. In this essay I will
be discussing how the Bauhaus movement and the Futurist movement are different in terms of their
philosophy of type, the characteristics and works of art.
The philosophy of these two movements are different in terms of how they both follow

The red text box is the focal point of the work and takes up about one–fourth of the composition.
Barbara Kruger's Untitled (I Shop Therefore I Am) is a visually simple but bold work that evokes
postmodern themes including media, popular culture, and consumer cultures. The daring and
aggressive red text box draws the viewer's eye directly to the bold phrase in white font. "Kruger
reformulated René Descartes' philosophical proposition of cognitive existence, 'I think therefore I
am', into a motto for the hyper–ventilated acquisitive world of the 1980s boom time..." (Engberg).
Descartes' theory implies that as long as an individual is simply thinking there is an active
engagement that is occurring that justifies a meaningful existence. Thus, thinking gives substance to
an individual's life. By replacing the word "think" with the word "shop" Kruger is making a social
commentary on society's shift from cognitive value to material value and exposes the tie between
consumer culture and personal identity. We are no longer defined by what we think but by what we
buy; as a result, our culture has become so overwhelmed with materialism that people have become
more reliant on the products that they buy and the materials that they own to define who they are.
The contrasting themes of intellectual value versus material value in Kruger's work instigates the

Morris Fuller Beton and Typeface News Gothic
Morris Fuller Beton creator of the Typeface News Gothic as well as many other typefaces was born
in the year of 1844 in Little falls New Jersey. He was the son of Linn Boyd Beton an American
engineer who created the ATF (American Type Founders Company) in the early 1892's.
Morris Fuller's father was an inventor and discovered many different ways to use and create
typefaces, his most successfulness invention was a pantographic punch–cutting machine, this
invention took the world of typography to the next level and created a way of industrializing the
make, design and the actual production of typefaces. Fuller's father created a mechanism that made
the proses easier. The old way of creating a typeface took too long and one could not get the
variations of size or width one could get with the use of the machine. Now the new way of
developing typefaces has changed and has separated the typefaces and turned them into fonts as they
still stand today but only today there are much more and are produced in a new much better scale.
This Machine opened many doors that led to other great future ideas such as Ottmar Mergenthaler's
Linotype Machine in 1886, in the beginning of 20th century there were more and more typefaces
that started to appear and that had been drawn by upcoming designers it was a trend and all wanted
to try it out and all was produced by separate punch cutters an idea that Linn Boyd Benton began

Designing The Cd Package Design
CD Package Design
I was inspired by watercolor portraits and CD packaging designs from other students. I decided to
incorporate this idea into the CD package design. Throughout the CD Package, I added a faded
textured in the background of the design. Within the background on the back panel, I added a
transparent photograph of a cricket to keep consistent with the title of the album name. Then, added
paint splatters and rendered them to make the model as a recognizable subject for the cover. In
addition, I added the song titles and an excerpt inside the front sleeve of the cover. Furthermore, I
used three colors: cerulean blue, chartreuse green, and indigo purple throughout the project. Lastly, I
added a barcode, a record label logo, and fictitious information to make the entire CD package look
realistic.
Typography Calendars
For the month of May, I created a calendar page using Franklin Gothic typeface and added different
shades of green and a beige color for the background in the calendar. I expanded the word "May"
and composed the days of the month and weeks into the word itself. I also included the history of
Franklin Gothic and added "Franklin Gothic" at the bottom of the composition. Lastly, I added
"2015" on top of the bottom base to complete the calendar.
For the month of October, I used the font Times New Roman and used different shades of the color
red throughout the whole calendar. Instead of using a standard calendar outline, I decided to add the

Morris Fuller Benton Research Paper
Franklin Gothic has become a well known classic font. Since its creation, it has been used thousands
of times in billboards, tv, books, board games, movies, logos and more.
In fact, MoMa uses it today for most of these materials and is actually the front for their logo.
Franklin Gothic is a bold san serif type with inspiration from Akzidenz Grotesk. It created by Morris
Fuller Benton who created it for the American Type Founders Company.
The typeface was given its name after Benjamin Franklin an american printer who Benton admired.
This typeface is very well done and timeless, because of its clean bold look it will never go out of
style and is very versatile.

During this time as part of the ATF he had created over 200 different typefaces. Some of this other
types are Century roman(1885), Marriage (19010,
Broadway (1928) and Stymie (1931) and this is to name a few. However, out of all the typefaces
Benton has created, Franklin Gothic has been his most successful one and is every well known.
Franklin Gothic was initially created for the AFT (american type founders) to have a single usable
typeface. At first, franklin was intended to complement the other gothic fonts that were created by
the company. However, once it was released to the public in 1904 people started to use it way more
often because they liked the weight of it and how well it communicated what they typesetters were
trying to put out. There were also many things that set this typeface apart from others. Some of those
characteristics being the q how its tail is more to the right and the weight was the same throughout,
and how some letters had variating strokes mimicking calligraphy. In its first years the typeface was
doing very well in advertising until about the 30's when more modern fronts

Designing An Effective Advertisement
Introduction
What does it take to make an effective advertisement that will successfully communicate an
important message? What does it take to capture the eye of the intended audience? It could be
dependent on the color selections or maybe even a certain graphic or image. Although those are all
vital elements to take into consideration during the design process, the most important element in
creating an effective advertisement is typography. Typography by definition is the arrangement and
manipulation of a certain typeface or typefaces on the layout of a design. Arranging text into an
effective design requires plenty of thought and a fair amount of experimentation.
A designer must consider the many different factors including alternative typefaces, point sizes, line
lengths and character spacing. These text elements represent typography, and with the correct
combination, it could be the means to a very successful advertisement and design. When looking at
typography from a marketing mentality, it is crucial to pay attention to the overall appearance and
tones advertisements try to express. Typography is a powerful tool to establish an identity or
presence, showcase the services or products it can offer them, and subtly inject the intended
message, above and beyond the actual words and graphics.
The History and Origin of Typography The origin of typography dated as early as 1850 to 1600
B.C.E. and originated from Ancient Greece. Punches and dies were utilized to produce

Missing Image/Advertisement Image This advertisement has been created to promote the
Volkswagen Golf Gt to an environmentally friendly audience. It achieves this by using the powerful
juxtaposition of a peaceful image contrasting with a dark and violent scene. To further this contrast,
the advertiser has placed the car directly in the center. This implies there are two very different
personalities to the car. Effectively personifying the car. Upon further examination of the image, we
see varied features. On the dark side, we see a covered moon. This may be used to convey a sense of
mystery or possibly to give the impression that the car is a beast. This relates to the classic movie–

Assumingly, the deer is there as the embodiment of peace in the image. Whereas, the violence is

performance, low emissions,? suggesting the best of both worlds. This is because of the constant
image that we gather from the car industry is that of harming the planet. High performance is not
something we relate with low emissions. The words ?high? and ?low? are antonyms reflecting the
dual nature of the car. In the main block of text, the writer initially uses the word ?welcome? to
forge a personal relation with the audience. As if to invite you to ?the world of the new look Golf
Gt.? This is done to attract you to the advert as friendly and attractive. The text speaks directly to the
audience, so they feel privileged, as if they have special access. In the sentence ?Voted Best New
Engine 2006?, every word begins with capital letters. This is to express that the car has won an
award, so it has an official title. The writer constantly repeats the word ?new? to present what the
car is. Different to anything else. The advert lists the features to build up to an implication of extra
features. These are incentives to indicate the car?s value for money. The subject specific jargon is
there for a reason. To make the audience feel intelligent. In turn, makes the writers emerge as
experts. The use of imperative verbs

Graduation Speech : Class Of 2005 From Senior From Harvard
His goals here were firstly, to praise the class of 2005 from managing to graduate from Stanford.
This is shown in the first part of his speech where he compliments the students for graduating from
"one of the finest universities in the world." Next, he is also seeking to impart what he learnt about
life and failure to the students. This can be observed through the stories that he deliberately chose to
impart his points: connecting the dots, love and loss, and death. I feel that these were chosen to
highlight the key turning points in his life, and what knowledge he was able to gain from them.
Lastly, I feel that his goal was to motivate the students to excel in their fields by showing that he
was once worse off than they was. This is seen when he mentions that he "never graduated from
college". By showing the audience that he started with less, and eventually became the person that
he was, I believe that he was hoping to motivate the students to pursue their dreams.
Regarding ethos, I feel that Steve Jobs was able to establish that by first praising the students for
graduating, and secondly by admitting that he never graduated college himself. The latter showed
humility towards his audience which in turn led to them increasing their receptiveness towards him.
Thus, by making himself seem more "human", the audience will then perceive him as a humble man
worked his way to success.
To establish pathos, Jobs tells the audience about how he was fired from Apple, and about his

Advertising : The Commodore Pet And The Apple II Essay
In 1977, the first commercially available personal computers hit the market with a boom. The
Commodore PET and the Apple II brought the computer into the average person's home and marked
the transition into the digital age. Six years afterwards, CompuServe launched an advertising
campaign for the first commercially available online service. The advertisement depicts a boy using
a computer in the foreground with what is presumably his parents in the background and the
headline "Last Night, CompuServe Turned This Computer into A Travel Agent for Jennie, A Stock
Analyst for Ralph, And Now, It's Sending Herbie to Another Galaxy" (Figure 1). The CompuServe
campaign uses specific visual elements to along with pathos in order to appeal to a target audience
and sell a product during a time where advertisers were trying to change people's attitude towards
technology. The CompuServe advertisement uses the image of a family as its subject and key
appeal. The setting and spatiality between the figures in the background cues the viewer into the
context of the scene. There is a kitchen and a dining/living area where a man is holding a newspaper
and is facing a woman holding a ticket, a hat and a bag. There is breakfast on the table, also clueing
the viewer in to the time the scene is taking place. The closeness between the figures combined with

Essay Reading and Typography
Reading and Typography
Reading is unavoidable. Students read textbooks; fathers read newspapers; engineers read manuals;
technicians read webpages; politicians read bills; Christians read the Bible, and the list goes on.
Everyone reads something. Seeing, perceiving, and recognizing lines and dots as a form of language
is a process that is extremely complicated yet necessary. Scientists have researched many aspects of
the visual reading process, and one of the most immediately applicable areas of concern is in the
field of typography. Researchers are attempting to answer two questions posed by publics such as
graphic artists, magazine editors, résumé writers, and even standardized test publishers: What
typestyle is best for what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other attributes for fonts include size, letter width, stroke width, and leading. All of these qualities
combine to produce a great number of options for users. Likewise, there are as many types and
variations of users as there are fonts, and consequently these audiences have unique needs for
reading and for font usage. The elderly prefer a different font than younger people (Keller 1997).
Normal vision readers have a greater advantage in seeing than low vision persons, so special
considerations must be made for those less fortunate (Mansfield, Legge, & Bane 1996), and persons
reading from print are affected differently than those viewing a computer monitor. Researchers have
considered these differences and have put fonts and their traits to the test.
Thomas Keller of Nonprofit World Magazine noted a survey conducted by the Disabled American
Veterans (DAV). The DAV sent out mailings with a new type, a serif type, and reportedly claim that
their bottom–line profits increased by $500,000 due solely to the change in typestyle. Keller also
attests that the DAV's findings support the "conventional wisdom" that serif types are more legible
and effective than sans serif faces. Unfortunately, his "conventional wisdom" contradicts that of
graphics professionals, and his conclusions from the mailing survey are improperly made, as
scientific research indicates that other equally subtle factors than the face are involved in readability
(Arditi, Knoblauch, & Grunwald 1990).

Futura Is A Sans Serif Typeface
Futura is a sans serif typeface. It is classified as geometric, meaning that the looks of the letterforms
are based on geometric shapes. The bowls of the letters are almost–perfect circles and the peaks of
some letters such as W's and uppercase A's create triangles. This gives the letterforms a very simple
look that can be broken down into just a few key elements. For example, letters such as the
lowercase 'd' and 'b' are made up of a circle and str¬aight, vertical line on one side, and letters such
as the uppercase 'T' are simply made up of two perfectly straight lines–one horizontal and one
vertical, with the vertical line extending directly below the center of the horizontal line. The
lowercase 't' changes things up a bit with the fact that the two lines are off–centered. Instead of
being directly in the center like the uppercase, the vertical line is positioned slightly to the left. The
lowercase 'f' mimics this as well. There are 22 different typefaces that make up the Futura family.
These include regular, light, light, book, medium, semibold, bold, extrabold, black, italic,
condensed, oblique, display, and inline. The weight of the strokes is near even which results in little
to no contrast. It has a tall x–height–making it easier to read even at small sizes. The lowercase
letters are actually taller than their uppercase counterparts, with the ascenders rising rise above the
cap height line. Some of the capitals form sharp points (as opposed to some font families where

Always a strong proponent of functional design, Tschichold looked at design with a utilitarian point
of view. According to Tschichold, functional designs show a greater understanding of typography's
role: communication (Eskilson 233). In order to achieve clarity in communication, Tschichold was
convinced that type should follow a logical flow on the page, predetermined by content; form
follows function. Tschichold wrote, "Every part of a text relates to every other part by a definite,
logical relationship of emphasis and value, predetermined by content. It is up to the typographer to
express this relationship clearly and visibly, through type sizes and weight, arrangement of lines, use
of colour, photography, etc."(67) By 1928, and the release of The New Typography, Tschichold was
a staunch promoter for the exclusive use of sans serif type and asymmetrical layouts, believing these
the most efficient way to achieve clarity of information. "His work... was functional, aesthetically
satisfying, and designed for reproduction by machine–type composition and newer printing
technologies" ("Jan Tschichold..."). Later in life, Tschichold abandoned his views on the exclusive
use of sans serif fonts and asymmetrical layouts, realizing that in certain circumstances, symmetrical
layouts and traditional serif fonts were more appropriate and more functional,

that is on almost all computers. Our slides came out simple and clean that had identical alignments,
avoided capital letters, was at a readable size and had perfect spacing for the audience. We also used
data–driven charts to reinforce our message and information. We took screenshots from Google
Trends when comparing inclinations of niches of the classmates and designed a pie chart as our
opening slide geared towards the 67% of students that had thought about starting their own business
one day. Inside the Google Trend screenshots, we created a line that was declining or inclining as a
reference point for the audience to see the trend more easily. On one other screenshot, we showed a
visual of a web page that was initially in our survey. The question had asked what area of the web
page stood out the most when first looked at. We drew a red rectangle around the most popular
answer, which was an area that 93% of students clicked on. Lastly, we used a fade animation on the
PowerPoint to add clarification, importance and focus the attention to a single point so the audience
didn't read ahead.

The Difference Between Arial And Helvetica
The drive to the core of absence is also evident in the realm of type design. In 1932, Beatrice Warde,
an American typographic expert, published an essay 'The Crystal Goblet', or known as 'Printing
Should Be Invisible', insists on an 'invisible' or 'transparent' typography in order to elevate the
printed words. In her essay, Warde adopted a metaphor that the design for typefaces should be as
transparent as crystal glass for wine (Warde, 1936, p.6). A typeface, as a container, is calculated to
reveal and not to hide the beautiful content which it is meant to contain. The design of the 'container'
should not call undue notice to itself. Her theory of invisible typefaces is in line with Modernist
simplicity as well as functionality, which perfect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They both are sans–serif typefaces that are universally embraced by different applications. At first
glance, they seem extremely similar. But if designers examine the characters in each typeface
closely, the differences between them become apparent. Mark Simonson, an American graphic
designer, produced an analysis of these two typefaces, showing how much more refined Helvetica
than that of Arial (Simonson, 2001). The primary difference between the two is the treatments of
their endings. While Helvetica is vertically cut, Arial is slightly angled. For instance, the tail of the
'a' is gently curved in Helvetica, as is the first connection of the bowl to the stem, but not in Arial.
Similarly, the top of the 't' and the ends of the strokes in the 'C' and 'S' are perfectly horizontal in the
former, but slightly angled in the latter. Even though the distinguishing details are so tiny that cannot
be noticed unless they are scrutinized as Simonson has done. Yet it is these subtleties that constitute
Helvetica a finer example of design than Arial, especially for professionals. Functionally the two
types are roughly equal, both are admirably clear, but aesthetically Helvetica is

Finding The Right Font Typeface
Finding the Right Font Typeface
The art and science of typefaces is called typography, and its roots date back to the 15th century
when a system of moveable type was first invented. This revolutionary concept spread throughout
the world and gave way to the mass printing of materials. Even though typography has a rich history
and plays a huge role in design, many still think that there isn't much to fonts. However, utilizing the
correct typeface is one of the most important aspects to graphic, print, and web design.
There are hundreds of typefaces out there, and in order to have an efficient design, being savvy with
typography is a must. In order to be a successful designer, or to be effective at marketing your
brand, one must realize that typography is more than just a choice of fonts, it's a science. Typefaces
can make or break your campaign or design piece, as it plays a vital role in how effective your text
is at being persuasive with your message or objective. Remember, choosing the right typography
can help deliver your message successfully by bridging the gaps between your text, graphics and
objective. By not paying attention to your typeface, you risk losing your audiences interest and
engagement, and will diminish the overall effectiveness of your message.

Sexual Desire And Power Play In Kohler Co. Advertisement

The Temptress and the Defender of Justice:
Sexual Desire and Power Play in Kohler Co. Advertisement The existence of a predominantly male
society and the continuous perpetuation of patriarchy heavily affected the way woman are
represented. Women may have been experiencing many privileges nowadays than women in the
previous century could not, but there are stereotypes and imposed gender roles that linger, especially
in the field of advertising. One of the common types of advertisements that are dominant today are
the ones that depict women as a sexualized object to get the attention of the male audience. In the
research conducted by Parul Nagi, it is shown that advertisements use women "to draw attention of
prospective buyers" (85), and these buyers are mostly, if not all, men. This advertising strategy
places the man in the position of the gazer, and the woman as the gazed (Mulvey 837).
Advertisements depicting sexualized women rely on human pleasure appealing to the sense of sight.
Thus, they tend to become pornographic, wherein "it dehumanizes and objectifies people"
(Kilbourne 488), diminishing their worth to that of an object to be owned only for visual and/or
sexual pleasure and easily disposed of. Sexualization of people, particularly women, can divert the
attention of the audience from the product or service being advertised to the objectified woman. In
the July 2017 issue of Vogue USA, there is an advertisement for Kohler Co. found on the second to
the last page. Kohler Co. is a manufacturer of kitchen and bathroom designs, furniture and
equipment, such as cabinets and tiles. The Kohler advertisement page in the magazine shows a
woman sitting on a steel table in an interrogation room. A police officer holding a rolled "wanted"
poster containing the woman's face is looking at her. At first glance, it is difficult to determine what
product or service the ad is pertaining to. It only becomes clear that the ad focuses on a certain
Kohler product and service in the small texts beneath the image, revealing that it promotes the
company's faucet collection. The faucet is on the center of the table, as well as the entire image, but

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Typefaces
Effective type design depends upon a broad conceptual and perceptual comprehension of typefaces
and their corresponding potentials for communication and expression. To achieve this
understanding, a comparison between the selected Super Normal serif and sans serif cases is
essential to be exhibited and summarized in this part, providing references to the following creative
part that will be showed in the Chapter 4.
Overview
Generally, type design demonstrates the history of cultural changes, social expectations, economic
advancements and technological progresses. The impetuses for the creations of typefaces vary from
each other, which in this study, arise from four main sources: cultural, corporate, technological and
aesthetic. Without doubt, there motivations can be interrelated. For example, Helvetica, as the most
representative Super Normal typeface, was motivated by the cultural determination towards the
reconstruction after the Second World War and the aesthetic passion to revolutionize the decorative
typography as used to. Another example comes from the Microsoft Corporation, a major
corporation, commissioned Matthew Carter to design a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the Super Normal typefaces are characterized with timeless and restricted characteristics,
they are not tedious. Indeed, the typefaces in the study, in order to celebrate normality, have been
branded by the era they were born. The design of Bodoni embodies a considered eminent figure of
the eighteenth century, recalling the spirit and sensitivity of the Enlightenment that encompassed
mathematic and rational direction. Whereas Georgia, Tahoma and Verdana, riding the wave of
developing digital technology, keep sharpness, screen–friendliness and approachability in design.

International Typographic Style Essay
The focus of this essay is to explain why the International Typographic Style or "Swiss" style was so
important to the mid twentieth century and how it got started. Firstly, it is an art movement that
internationally began in the 1950's, but the origins can be traced back at least thirty years. It can be
thought of as a combination of elements from other movements such as Constructivism, De Stijl and
the Bauhaus. According to Richard Hollis' book Swiss Graphic Design, there are "at least three
factors that account for the 'Swiss' style" (Hollis, R. 2006, P9), these being the country's location,
the language and the culture. There is evidence to prove that there are at least 2 other factors,
especially for the origin of the style, which is shown in the book, along with several others.
Although not directly linked to the foundation of the style itself, these 2 other factors include the
designers and the typography, after all, it is known as the International Typographic Style. In this
essay we will be discussing each of them in turn, and explaining views as to why they were
important and what effect they had on graphic design in the mid twentieth century.
We begin with one of the most important factors, the designers themselves. Without the designers to
create the style, there would be no style. Josef Müller–Brockmann was a leading figure of Swiss
graphic design in the 1950's and 1960's. He began his path towards the Swiss style in the early
1930's as a student of Ernst

Identities Are A Major Section Of The Contemporary Graphic...
Identities are a major section of the contemporary graphic industry; no matter how big or small a
project may be, a successful design outcome is likely to involve at least some aspects of an identity.
This is most frequently through the production of a design piece in a way that creates a visual
coherence, be that through the use of a certain structure, typeface, colour or any other consistency.
However quite obviously the most frequently related sector of design to the creation of such
identities is branding. Since as far back as the 1930's the idea of making all a company's
communications visually coherent has been practised to allow their consumers to recognise them
easier and faster. Then consequently if the consumer finds the ... Show more content on

After this the advancement in mobile technology amplified the Internet 's effect on the expansion of
a brand as consumers were empowered with all round access to the Internet through their devices.
As well as the creation of mobile applications, again opening a new avenue of design for the
creation of the interfaces of these products. Alongside both of these has been the rise of social
media, which has become another major advance that has affected the way identities work and
created new opportunities.
All of these aforementioned technological improvements have combined to drastically alter the
creation of an identity and have required a new form of design process that no longer has a start and
a finish but is a forever continuing cycle of iterations.
Prior to the digital era and the creation of the Internet the majority of graphic design based projects
would have been produced for printed formats. Looking specifically at the period post war there
began to be a shift in the way advertising design was approached which subsequently affected brand
identities. Taking influence from ideas of the modernism movement designers began to scrap the
handwritten and script tendencies used in advertising of the 1950's and instead looked towards
simplifying a design or identity with the use of a sans serif type family. Chermayett & Geismers
rebrand of Mobil is an example typical of this and when comparing the 1964 rebrand to its
predecessors it is clear that the

Eric Rowton Gill Research Paper
Arthur Eric Rowton Gill, born in Brighton, England in 1882. Born in a family of twelve, he was the
elder brother of another well–known graphic artist, MacDonald Gill. His family did not stayed long
in Brighton, as they moved to Chichester in 1897. Afterwards, Eric attended to Chichester Technical
and Art School. Three years later, he moved to London as a trainee to become an architect with the
practice and help of specialist in ecclesiastical architecture, W.D. Caroe. Soon after, he became
unsatisfied in his architectural training, deciding to study at Westminster Technical School, where he
attended in evening classes in stone masonry. In addition, he also decided to practice calligraphy at
the Central School of Arts and Crafts. It was there that he met one of his major influences, Edward
Johnson, the creator of the London Underground typeface. After three years from his training in
architecture, he gave it up and decided to become a calligrapher, letter cutter and monumental
mason. In 1907, Eric moved to Ditchling in Sussex, after he married Ethel Hester Moore, and
decided to work from there. He would later inspire an artists' community in the town. He began ...

According to Monotype's Hidden Gems: Gill Sans, Know your type notes, "...each weight retains a
distinct character of its own. The light font, with its heavily kerned 'f' and tall 't', has an open,
elegant look. The regular font has a more compact and muscular appearance, with its flat–bottomed
'd', flat–topped 'p' and 'q', and short, triangular–topped 't.' The bold font tends to echo the softer,
more open style of the light, while the extra bold and ultra bold have their own vivid personalities."
Gill Sans' weight varies from light to ultra bold, which it can be useful for companies to test out
which weight will go well with as their corporate

The Invention Of Printing Press
Since the beginning of typography people were always looking to create it in a faster more effective
way. The printing press was then created to do just that, it made it possible to mass produce designs
and newspapers with a lot text. But during that time there weren 't that many styles of typefaces and
since then the typefaces have changed, kind of. The typefaces used when they were press was first
made are still used today. Are hand crafted fonts more successful than the sans serif modern
typefaces.
The History of typography is very captivating it changes, but not as impactful as poster design.
Starting from the industrial revolution and it evolution through to the International typographic
style.
The industrial revolution was where the beginning of typographic communication first initially
started to generate.(Meggs and Pervis 152). The type movement had started to push and to focus on
the social and economic shifts of the country and its role in communication. Designers started to
incorporate wood type and metal type into posters since they were invented. They used typefaces
such as Robert Thorne's fat typeface 1821, Vincent Figgins two lines pica 1815 and Vincent Figgins
Two–line Great Primer Sans–serif 1832. These were some of the fonts that were used when the press
first came out; and there are many more. Most of these font styles are still used today depending on
the design they might not be the exact same, other refined versions but we still uses fonts of all

Graphic Design For Print Module

  • 1. Graphic Design For Print Module Graphic design for print module is based on developing ideas from concept to final print ready artwork across a spectrum of printed media. During this module I was experiencing different methods of preparing art work for print. I went through printing history and based on my experience with some of these media I just developed my printing skills. ANNA'S HOME by Vogue as a project I have decided to do ANNA'S HOME by Vogue as a main project for many reasons. First reason was Vogue by itself. Vogue was always a holy magazine to me and I have always had it as a symbol of beauty, perfection and sophistication. My first intention was to do a fashion magazine but as many people in my class decided for fashion type of print pieces I wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But what is different? My store will support young designers to sell their unique pieces, just like I have created during my high school studies, I want to encourage celebrities to create their own limited collection of home decorations, just like H&M collaborates with high–end fashion designers. Also having a great brand name as Vogue as a supporter will give not just a publicity but also the feel of quality guarantee. Many high–street brands having their home section e.g.. Zara, M&S, H&M, Primark etc... Their collaboration with famous designers offered not just a limited collections but also reasonable prices compare to their standard prices. So my question was why not Vogue? Vogue inspires million of people around the world in fashion since 1892, when it was created by Arthur Baldwin Turnere, but majority of products published in this magazine is quite expensive. My ideas should help to Vogue to extend their influence and support young designers as well. Also designers designing for this brand could spread their products for more reasonable prices. Identity I have created a logo which according my opinion fully describes ANNA'S HOME by Vogue as a brand. I have decided to use a hexagon as a main shape. Reason why is simple. If you look at the hexagon and split it in half it will remind you a silhouette of house and the other half as a reflection. And no matter how you rotate it it will still remind you a house. Which is a great connection to home ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Reflection On Presentation Overall, I believe that my presentation went very well. This is due to the visuals used, the examples I presented, the tone of the presentation, and my overall knowledge of the subject. Using the feedback summary that I received from my students, I can safely say that my presentation was very successful. However, there are a few key areas of the presentation that I would improve for future use, and there are also a few areas that I would revise to make the application experience better for all participants. Firstly, I believe that my presentation went well because of the visuals that I used. The presentation was made to be viewer–friendly by using a slides template that had a speech box; I thought that this worked well with an advertising–based assignment, since an advertisement is supposed to be a talking point for viewers. Consequently, I tried to make sure that the backgrounds used did not distract or detract from the content in the slides, and I believe that the minimalist approach to colour and visuals helped in this regard. I also tried to use examples that were bold or that made a statement, as they were supposed to grab the students' attention, and would also make sure that the students had definitive options to consider when making their own advertisements. I was incredibly pleased with my decision to use the text that in the body of the slides, as I found that this text was incredibly effective and it also helped to tie together my original assessment; this was that sans serif fonts and serif fonts can both work well in an advertisement, so long as the same fonts are used in tandem with one another. Moreover, I also thought that my decision to have a video example was also effective, as I then had no need to worry about having only poster–based examples and could instead also focus on what makes a video advertisement effective as well. The final piece of my summative presentation that I believe I did well with was the content on each slide. The sides were created to make them easily readable while I was speaking; I thought that this effect was also compounded by the fact that the information I discussed was quite often a bullet point on a slide; this made it so that someone who is not reading the ... • 9. The Influential Typeface Helvetica The influential typeface Helvetica, a neo–grotesque1 sans serif type design, came into being in the early 1950s – after the Second World War. The expectation of the designers, Edouard Hoffman and Max Miedinger was to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its form and could be used on a wide variety of signage to remake a new identity apart from the past (). Originally named as Neue Haas Grotesk, the typeface was changed to Helvetica in 1960. Today, Helvetica, as an aesthetics constant, although not perfect, mastered the quantum leap in 1957 from metal type to the digital age of word processing. Axel Langer, a curator of Islamic Near Eastern Art, mentioned it as 'an impersonal typeface for today and tomorrow ().' Analysis: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The original design was released by Linotype in 1957. Since its launch, the typeface had been worked on by a variety of designers to adapt it for successive methods of composition, from hot metal to photocomposition to digital. Given the technical limitations of methods, the character weights, widths and spacing were inconsistent and compromised. Neue Helvetica, as the outcome of technological changes, was designed in 1983, represents a synthesis of aesthetics and technical refinements and modifications that resulted in improved usefulness: a number of characters were subtly changed to be more consistent and more harmonious with the overall design characteristics. For instance, the x–height has been adjusted to appear visually the same in all weights. The x–heights in previous versions were all the same, but since type tends to look shorter as it gets heavier, the new x–heights compensate for this optical illusion. Besides, the crossbars on the lowercase 'f' and 't' were widened to increase the legibility in text. Additionally, the Neue Helvetica family was extended to 51 weights in all, which are many more than in the original ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Super Normal Case Study 2.3 Super Normal Being a concept to celebrate sustainability in durable design, Super Normal is a concept developed by furniture designer Jasper Morrison and product designer Naoto Fukasawa. It refers to timeless products that serve people without drawing attention to themselves (Fukasawa & Morrison 2012). Calling for a re–realization of unobtrusive designs in daily life, Super Normal encourages designers to re–acknowledge the parts people naturally think are good in design. Generally, designers or even people who buy designs do not advocate 'normal' as a design concept, they expect something 'special' or 'novel' to catch eyes. However, the products that make a difference in daily life are invisible (Norman, 2013, p.13). Design is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not that there is anything wrong with beauty in Super Normal. On the contrary, the beauty of a product can elicit positive emotions that open up the cognitive system and inspires people to find out creative solutions easily (Norman, 2002). Here is a clear–cut case (Pic.10) that illustrates the aesthetic differences between Arial and Helvetica. They both are sans–serif typefaces that are universally embraced by different applications. At first glance, they seem extremely similar. But if designers examine the characters in each type closely, the differences become apparent. Mark Simonson[9], an American graphic designer, produced an analysis of these two types, showing how much more refined design of Helvetica than that of Arial (Simonson, 2001). The primary difference between the two is the treatments of their endings. While Helvetica is vertically cut, Arial is slightly angled. For instance, the tail of the 'a' is gently curved in Helvetica, but not in Arial. Similarly, the top of the 't' and the ends of the strokes in the 'C' and 'S' are perfectly horizontal in the former but slightly angled in the latter. The letterforms of Helvetica demonstrate exactly how thoughtfully designed they are. The typeface is uniform and structurally sound by adhering to a guide of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Successful College Writing And Writing Arguments Successful College Writing and Writing Arguments are both textbooks I've had to spend a lot of time reading over the course of my college adventure thus far. Some things that I've never given a lot of thought to in regards to textbooks are questions like "Why did they put that there?", or "Why did they choose that font, color or layout?" It is easy as a student to take for granted the thought and planning that goes into a textbook that will aid you over the course of your learning experience. The cover of this book is warm and inviting telling you to come right in and see what writing is all about. In Writing Arguments, the reader is taken directly to the table of contents and as I mentioned before, there is no playing about, the writers intend to get down to business right away. This is the opposite of Successful College Writing. This textbook plunges into the preface immediately. Its writer wants her readers to know the changes she's made to the textbook as well as the new additions. Writing Arguments deals with the topic transitions a bit differently, simply utilizing large bold font as each topic's header. Energy was a major incentive to the agricultural society to the industrial. Until James Watt created the steam engine, which deployed rapidly starting in the 1780s, animal and human power were the primary sources of energy (Clare). During the last three decades of the century, electricity and gasoline–fuels engines further expanded productivity (Clare). A factory system with machine manufacturing and divisions of labor was developed. New materials, particularly iron and steel, became available. Cities grew rapidly, as masses of people left suburban areas and farm tending to seek for employment in factories. Political powers shifted away from aristocracy and toward capitalist manufacturers, merchants, and even the working class. The growth of scientific knowledge was applied to manufacturing processes and materials. People's sense of dominion over nature and faith in the ability to exploit the earth's resources for material needs created confidence. Landowners were no longer the most powerful force in the Western countries. Investment in machines for mass manufacture became the basis for change in industry. Demand from rapidly growing urban population with expanding buying power stimulated technological improvements, (Clare). In turn, this enabled mass production and increased availability and lowered costs. The cheaper, more abundant merchandise now available stimulated a mass market and even ... It has been recently rebranded and given a more vintage look inspired by the Bacardi hand–drawn bat designs from the early 1900s. The bat logo was chosen because from the beginning many of Bacardi's potential clients were illiterate, and the image of the bat helped them to remember the rum. It is also used because it stays true to the integrity of the original symbol. In Cuban and Spanish heritage bats represent good health, fortune, and family unity. It has been the essences of our survival allowing us to be able to pass on our knowledge, express ideas, and covey emotions. As time passed, we have learned different methods to communicate. For example, we have learned to communicate with words and symbols which has helped us evolve and form a foundation for our society. Words and symbols have allowed to us expand our ability to communicate and the ability to express our ideas in a greater way. Typography has become one of the most influential ways that we use to communicate in this modern–day era; and it plays a major role in our society. Typography essentially is found everywhere – from posters to books, magazines to signs and generally anywhere where type is involved. Now the history of type itself is quite long which definitely states that type has come a long way and has a great history behind it. Two of the most well–known movements in type, which introduced new principals and brought change to type, would be the Bauhaus movement and Futurist movement. These two movements have brought forth change and principals that have influenced the typography work in todays world. The daring and aggressive red text box draws the viewer's eye directly to the bold phrase in white font. "Kruger reformulated René Descartes' philosophical proposition of cognitive existence, 'I think therefore I am', into a motto for the hyper–ventilated acquisitive world of the 1980s boom time..." (Engberg). Descartes' theory implies that as long as an individual is simply thinking there is an active engagement that is occurring that justifies a meaningful existence. Thus, thinking gives substance to an individual's life. By replacing the word "think" with the word "shop" Kruger is making a social commentary on society's shift from cognitive value to material value and exposes the tie between consumer culture and personal identity. We are no longer defined by what we think but by what we buy; as a result, our culture has become so overwhelmed with materialism that people have become more reliant on the products that they buy and the materials that they own to define who they are. He was the son of Linn Boyd Beton an American engineer who created the ATF (American Type Founders Company) in the early 1892's. Morris Fuller's father was an inventor and discovered many different ways to use and create typefaces, his most successfulness invention was a pantographic punch–cutting machine, this invention took the world of typography to the next level and created a way of industrializing the make, design and the actual production of typefaces. Fuller's father created a mechanism that made the proses easier. The old way of creating a typeface took too long and one could not get the variations of size or width one could get with the use of the machine. • 40. Designing An Effective Advertisement Introduction What does it take to make an effective advertisement that will successfully communicate an important message? What does it take to capture the eye of the intended audience? It could be dependent on the color selections or maybe even a certain graphic or image. Although those are all vital elements to take into consideration during the design process, the most important element in creating an effective advertisement is typography. Typography by definition is the arrangement and manipulation of a certain typeface or typefaces on the layout of a design. Arranging text into an effective design requires plenty of thought and a fair amount of experimentation. A designer must consider the many different factors including alternative typefaces, point sizes, line lengths and character spacing. These text elements represent typography, and with the correct combination, it could be the means to a very successful advertisement and design. When looking at typography from a marketing mentality, it is crucial to pay attention to the overall appearance and tones advertisements try to express. Typography is a powerful tool to establish an identity or presence, showcase the services or products it can offer them, and subtly inject the intended message, above and beyond the actual words and graphics. The History and Origin of Typography The origin of typography dated as early as 1850 to 1600 B.C.E. and originated from Ancient Greece. Punches and dies were utilized to produce ... It achieves this by using the powerful juxtaposition of a peaceful image contrasting with a dark and violent scene. To further this contrast, the advertiser has placed the car directly in the center. This implies there are two very different personalities to the car. Effectively personifying the car. Upon further examination of the image, we see varied features. The words ?high? and ?low? are antonyms reflecting the dual nature of the car. In the main block of text, the writer initially uses the word ?welcome? to forge a personal relation with the audience. As if to invite you to ?the world of the new look Golf Gt.? This is done to attract you to the advert as friendly and attractive. The text speaks directly to the audience, so they feel privileged, as if they have special access. In the sentence ?Voted Best New Engine 2006?, every word begins with capital letters. This is to express that the car has won an award, so it has an official title. The writer constantly repeats the word ?new? to present what the car is. Different to anything else. • 48. Graduation Speech : Class Of 2005 From Senior From Harvard His goals here were firstly, to praise the class of 2005 from managing to graduate from Stanford. This is shown in the first part of his speech where he compliments the students for graduating from "one of the finest universities in the world." Next, he is also seeking to impart what he learnt about life and failure to the students. This can be observed through the stories that he deliberately chose to impart his points: connecting the dots, love and loss, and death. I feel that these were chosen to highlight the key turning points in his life, and what knowledge he was able to gain from them. Lastly, I feel that his goal was to motivate the students to excel in their fields by showing that he was once worse off than they was. This is seen when he mentions that he "never graduated from college". By showing the audience that he started with less, and eventually became the person that he was, I believe that he was hoping to motivate the students to pursue their dreams. Regarding ethos, I feel that Steve Jobs was able to establish that by first praising the students for graduating, and secondly by admitting that he never graduated college himself. The latter showed humility towards his audience which in turn led to them increasing their receptiveness towards him. Thus, by making himself seem more "human", the audience will then perceive him as a humble man worked his way to success. The Commodore PET and the Apple II brought the computer into the average person's home and marked the transition into the digital age. Six years afterwards, CompuServe launched an advertising campaign for the first commercially available online service. The advertisement depicts a boy using a computer in the foreground with what is presumably his parents in the background and the headline "Last Night, CompuServe Turned This Computer into A Travel Agent for Jennie, A Stock Analyst for Ralph, And Now, It's Sending Herbie to Another Galaxy" (Figure 1). The CompuServe campaign uses specific visual elements to along with pathos in order to appeal to a target audience and sell a product during a time where advertisers were trying to change people's attitude towards technology. The CompuServe advertisement uses the image of a family as its subject and key appeal. The setting and spatiality between the figures in the background cues the viewer into the context of the scene. There is a kitchen and a dining/living area where a man is holding a newspaper and is facing a woman holding a ticket, a hat and a bag. Students read textbooks; fathers read newspapers; engineers read manuals; technicians read webpages; politicians read bills; Christians read the Bible, and the list goes on. Everyone reads something. Seeing, perceiving, and recognizing lines and dots as a form of language is a process that is extremely complicated yet necessary. Scientists have researched many aspects of the visual reading process, and one of the most immediately applicable areas of concern is in the field of typography. All of these qualities combine to produce a great number of options for users. Likewise, there are as many types and variations of users as there are fonts, and consequently these audiences have unique needs for reading and for font usage. The elderly prefer a different font than younger people (Keller 1997). Normal vision readers have a greater advantage in seeing than low vision persons, so special considerations must be made for those less fortunate (Mansfield, Legge, & Bane 1996), and persons reading from print are affected differently than those viewing a computer monitor. Researchers have considered these differences and have put fonts and their traits to the test. Thomas Keller of Nonprofit World Magazine noted a survey conducted by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). The DAV sent out mailings with a new type, a serif type, and reportedly claim that their bottom–line profits increased by $500,000 due solely to the change in typestyle. Keller also attests that the DAV's findings support the "conventional wisdom" that serif types are more legible and effective than sans serif faces. Unfortunately, his "conventional wisdom" contradicts that of graphics professionals, and his conclusions from the mailing survey are improperly made, as scientific research indicates that other equally subtle factors than the face are involved in readability (Arditi, Knoblauch, & Grunwald 1990). ... • 56. Futura Is A Sans Serif Typeface Futura is a sans serif typeface. It is classified as geometric, meaning that the looks of the letterforms are based on geometric shapes. The bowls of the letters are almost–perfect circles and the peaks of some letters such as W's and uppercase A's create triangles. This gives the letterforms a very simple look that can be broken down into just a few key elements. For example, letters such as the lowercase 'd' and 'b' are made up of a circle and str¬aight, vertical line on one side, and letters such as the uppercase 'T' are simply made up of two perfectly straight lines–one horizontal and one vertical, with the vertical line extending directly below the center of the horizontal line. The lowercase 't' changes things up a bit with the fact that the two lines are off–centered. Instead of being directly in the center like the uppercase, the vertical line is positioned slightly to the left. The lowercase 'f' mimics this as well. There are 22 different typefaces that make up the Futura family. These include regular, light, light, book, medium, semibold, bold, extrabold, black, italic, condensed, oblique, display, and inline. The weight of the strokes is near even which results in little to no contrast. It has a tall x–height–making it easier to read even at small sizes. The lowercase letters are actually taller than their uppercase counterparts, with the ascenders rising rise above the cap height line. Always a strong proponent of functional design, Tschichold looked at design with a utilitarian point of view. According to Tschichold, functional designs show a greater understanding of typography's role: communication (Eskilson 233). In order to achieve clarity in communication, Tschichold was convinced that type should follow a logical flow on the page, predetermined by content; form follows function. Tschichold wrote, "Every part of a text relates to every other part by a definite, logical relationship of emphasis and value, predetermined by content. It is up to the typographer to express this relationship clearly and visibly, through type sizes and weight, arrangement of lines, use of colour, photography, etc."(67) By 1928, and the release of The New Typography, Tschichold was a staunch promoter for the exclusive use of sans serif type and asymmetrical layouts, believing these the most efficient way to achieve clarity of information. "His work... was functional, aesthetically satisfying, and designed for reproduction by machine–type composition and newer printing technologies" ("Jan Tschichold..."). In 1932, Beatrice Warde, an American typographic expert, published an essay 'The Crystal Goblet', or known as 'Printing Should Be Invisible', insists on an 'invisible' or 'transparent' typography in order to elevate the printed words. In her essay, Warde adopted a metaphor that the design for typefaces should be as transparent as crystal glass for wine (Warde, 1936, p.6). They both are sans–serif typefaces that are universally embraced by different applications. At first glance, they seem extremely similar. But if designers examine the characters in each typeface closely, the differences between them become apparent. Mark Simonson, an American graphic designer, produced an analysis of these two typefaces, showing how much more refined Helvetica than that of Arial (Simonson, 2001). The primary difference between the two is the treatments of their endings. While Helvetica is vertically cut, Arial is slightly angled. For instance, the tail of the 'a' is gently curved in Helvetica, as is the first connection of the bowl to the stem, but not in Arial. Similarly, the top of the 't' and the ends of the strokes in the 'C' and 'S' are perfectly horizontal in the former, but slightly angled in the latter. Even though the distinguishing details are so tiny that cannot be noticed unless they are scrutinized as Simonson has done. Advertisement Riann Martino Dr. Josh Pryor English 1A 20 September 2017 Word Count: 1082 The Temptress and the Defender of Justice: Sexual Desire and Power Play in Kohler Co. Advertisement The existence of a predominantly male society and the continuous perpetuation of patriarchy heavily affected the way woman are represented. Women may have been experiencing many privileges nowadays than women in the previous century could not, but there are stereotypes and imposed gender roles that linger, especially in the field of advertising. One of the common types of advertisements that are dominant today are the ones that depict women as a sexualized object to get the attention of the male audience. In the research conducted by Parul Nagi, it is shown that advertisements use women "to draw attention of prospective buyers" (85), and these buyers are mostly, if not all, men. This advertising strategy places the man in the position of the gazer, and the woman as the gazed (Mulvey 837). Advertisements depicting sexualized women rely on human pleasure appealing to the sense of sight. Thus, they tend to become pornographic, wherein "it dehumanizes and objectifies people" (Kilbourne 488), diminishing their worth to that of an object to be owned only for visual and/or sexual pleasure and easily disposed of. Sexualization of people, particularly women, can divert the attention of the audience from the product or service being advertised to the objectified woman. In the July 2017 issue of Vogue USA, there is an advertisement for Kohler Co. found on the second to the last page. Kohler Co. is a manufacturer of kitchen and bathroom designs, furniture and equipment, such as cabinets and tiles. The Kohler advertisement page in the magazine shows a woman sitting on a steel table in an interrogation room. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Typefaces Effective type design depends upon a broad conceptual and perceptual comprehension of typefaces and their corresponding potentials for communication and expression. To achieve this understanding, a comparison between the selected Super Normal serif and sans serif cases is essential to be exhibited and summarized in this part, providing references to the following creative part that will be showed in the Chapter 4. Overview Generally, type design demonstrates the history of cultural changes, social expectations, economic advancements and technological progresses. The impetuses for the creations of typefaces vary from each other, which in this study, arise from four main sources: cultural, corporate, technological and aesthetic. Without doubt, there motivations can be interrelated. International Typographic Style Essay The focus of this essay is to explain why the International Typographic Style or "Swiss" style was so important to the mid twentieth century and how it got started. Firstly, it is an art movement that internationally began in the 1950's, but the origins can be traced back at least thirty years. It can be thought of as a combination of elements from other movements such as Constructivism, De Stijl and the Bauhaus. According to Richard Hollis' book Swiss Graphic Design, there are "at least three factors that account for the 'Swiss' style" (Hollis, R. 2006, P9), these being the country's location, the language and the culture. There is evidence to prove that there are at least 2 other factors, especially for the origin of the style, which is shown in the book, along with several others. Although not directly linked to the foundation of the style itself, these 2 other factors include the designers and the typography, after all, it is known as the International Typographic Style. In this essay we will be discussing each of them in turn, and explaining views as to why they were important and what effect they had on graphic design in the mid twentieth century. We begin with one of the most important factors, the designers themselves. Without the designers to create the style, there would be no style. Identities are a major section of the contemporary graphic industry; no matter how big or small a project may be, a successful design outcome is likely to involve at least some aspects of an identity. This is most frequently through the production of a design piece in a way that creates a visual coherence, be that through the use of a certain structure, typeface, colour or any other consistency. However quite obviously the most frequently related sector of design to the creation of such identities is branding. Alongside both of these has been the rise of social media, which has become another major advance that has affected the way identities work and created new opportunities. All of these aforementioned technological improvements have combined to drastically alter the creation of an identity and have required a new form of design process that no longer has a start and a finish but is a forever continuing cycle of iterations. Prior to the digital era and the creation of the Internet the majority of graphic design based projects would have been produced for printed formats. Looking specifically at the period post war there began to be a shift in the way advertising design was approached which subsequently affected brand identities.
