Adaptive behaviour has been an integral although sometimes unstated, part of the long history of
mental retardation and its definition. In the 19th century, mental retardation was recognized
principally in terms of a number of factors that included awareness and understanding of
surroundings, ability to engage in regular economic and social life, dependence on others, the ability
to maintain one's basic health and safety, and individual responsibility (Brockley, 1999).
The assessment of adaptive behaviour became a formal part of the diagnostic nomenclature for
mental retardation with the publication of the 1959 manual of the American Association of Mental
Deficiency (Heber, 1959, distributed in 1961). The 1961 manual (Heber, 1961) discussed adaptive
behaviour with respect to maturation, learning, and social adjustment. This framework, reiterated in
1983, described adaptive behaviour limitations consisting of "significant limitations in an
individual's effectiveness in meeting the standards of maturation, learning, personal independence,
or social maturity that are expected for his or her age level and cultural group, as determined by

I. Problem Statement
A. Statement of the Problem and its Significance As the number of children with autism and other
developmental disability diagnoses continue to rise across the nation, there is a greater need for
comprehensive services and programs designed to address the needs of these individuals. At
Advocate Illinois Masonic Pediatric Developmental Center, the behavioral psychology program is
one of five programs aimed to assist children with disabilities to be able to function across
environments. Behavioral issues are a common occurrence in children diagnosed with a
developmental disability. Some behaviors can be easily redirected, while more aggressive, self–
injurious and harmful behaviors can sometimes lead to hospitalization. The main objective of the
behavioral psychology program is to provide parent–focused training to implement strategies and
skills to reduce behaviors and the amount of hospitalizations of children with disabilities.
B. Specific Objectives of Projected Research Currently at the Pediatric Developmental center, the
waitlist for services is very long. Some families are waiting up to two years to begin receiving
individual behavior therapy services after the initial parent training requirement of the behavior
psychology program. In addition, current data collection protocols have been determined to be
inadequate measures of effectiveness within the program by program stakeholders. There is a need
for data to be collected at more regulated times

Literature Review The age of language acquisition can be an important indicator of positive
prognosis and social functioning in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with
ASD have impairments in social communication and interaction, and a comprehensive
communication assessment is a core component of diagnosing and evaluation. Assessments are used
to utilize measures that capture each child's communication ability and there is extensive literature
available detailing the language deficits of children with ASD. However, first acquired language in
different age ranges were probed with children with ASD to find the relationship to cognitive
abilities and adaptive skills (Mayo, Chlebowski, Fein, and Eigsti, 2013).
Methods Section A total of 119 children took part in Mayo, Chelbowski, Fein, and Eigsti's (2013)
study, 75 children (63%) with Autistic Disorder (AD), and 44 (37%) children with Pervasive
Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD–NOS). The participants were primarily
male (83.2%) and White (82.4%), and ranged from 45 to 72 months of age at the time of evaluation
(Mayo, Chlebowski, Fein, and Eigsti, 2013). An ASD screening study was conducted by using the
Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M–CHAT), an autism–specific screening tool that uses
parent reports. Children between 16 and 30 months of age were screened using M–CHAT. A

to analyze both adaptations. Though Irving's short story dates back to an earlier time period in the
American landscape, it nonetheless forms the foundation of both Pynchon's and Coover's work.
Though Irving's writing style has often been called exceedingly British sounding, his narratives are
steeped in American history and the American way of life. Both Thomas Pynchon and Robert
Coover on the other hand belong to the postmodern age and deal with experimental fiction in
America. If Pynchon's fiction is described as encyclopedic, labyrinthine and convoluted then
Coover's is termed otherworldly and surreal. Despite the fact that most critics see both Pynchon and
Cooveras being as dissimilar as chalk and cheese, they nonetheless use experimental forms and
techniques that are distinctly postmodern as the present study will depict.

The Goophered Grapevine, written by Charles Chesnutt, is told from a business man who, due to an
unfortunate circumstance of his wife's illness, moved from Ohio to North Carolina. The story is
majorly told from the position of a man named Julius McAdoo, who, due to the author's intention,
speaks in a heavy dialect that reflected southern slaves at the time. The author aggrandizes Julius's

These people are the reason when he left, he never returned to America, and told people it was a
place people did not want to go. This is one of the big reason we do not say that he is the one that
discovered America, because he did not want his people to leave with these people. Unlike
Columbus though, he did not just want to wipe out a whole population of people. No one knows
exactly where he landed, but if not in America it was on the North American continent. This is
