Could please answer those questions about North country movie?
Here are the questions:
What is the deviant conduct?
How are labels used and contested?
How does the label of deviance as portrayed in the clip relate to social change?
Solution
Josey during her school days had suffered with a school punishment for caught kissing with her
boyfriend. This is something not acceptable as a good act. Josey was raped by her Teacher
leading to pregnancy and Sammy's Birth. This is highly deviant conduct not acceptable in
society. Labels are used on the basis of ones past deeds in society. If someone is acting according
to the society rules and manners that are acceptable among public, then he earns respect and
good label. If someone is acting against the social acceptance then he will face the same thing in
behaviour of people towards her. Earlier when it was not clear that who is Sammy's father, Hank
was ashamed of Josey but when it became clear that she was targetted by her teacher during
school days, Hank started supporting her and also all the support from miners women and family
started pouring in for her. And mining company was forced to pay for the sufferings of many
other women like her in the mine. So, label of deviance was first the reason for her unacceptance
in society later on when she earned a clean image in society, she earned support as well.
