1. Slide #1 Title
Sa wa dee ka, Di chan chu Helen Dean, Ka.
Today I’m going to be talking to you about an event that happened this weekend in the
Philippines and in China.
Slide #2 What is A typhoon?
A lot of you have heard about the horrible effects that Hurricane Florence has had on the
Carolinas in the United States. What many don’t know is that there is something even more
dangerous occuring on the other side of the world in Asia, which I will get to in a second. A
typhoon is considered a tropical cyclone in the Northwest Pacific, similar to the hurricanes we
experience here. Typically, typhoons include heavy rain, strong winds, storm surges and
tornados.
Slide #3 Typhoon Mangkhut
On Saturday, a super typhoon hit the Philippines, making its way through China and
Hong Kong as well. While in the Philippines,Typhoon Mangkhut, or Ompong by Filipino people,
winds were around 165 miles per hour(keep in mind thats 75 more than Hurricane Florence
reported.) The numbers are constantly changing with rescue and recovery efforts, but so far the
typhoon has left 63 people dead, 42 injured and dozens unaccounted for. It’s said to be the
world’s strongest storm of 2018

Slide #4 Mudslide
The most severe damage of the storm has been in the Northern province and island of
Luzon, which is the country’s largest and most populated island. In total there have been 51
landslides, one of the worst in the mining town of Itogon. While 16 bodies have been recovered
from the aftermath, the rescuers have no idea how many survivors nd bodies are still buried,
estaminated dozens to be unaccounted for.

Slide #7 Rescue Efforts
Survivors of miners and their families, as well as emergency responders, have been
attempting rescue efforts for people still buried beneath the debris. However, with all the wet
ground surrounding the town, it has been impossible for workers to bring in heavy machinery,
making efforts to save family members significantly slower by only using shovels and their
hands. Originally, rescuers had to hike 2 hours to bring supplies to the debris and remains to the
families. Now they have developed a sort of levie system that enables items to get to the target
location faster.
Slide #8 The Questions Surrounding the Workers
It is alleged that the people working the mining site in Itogon called Antamok were
working the land illegally, after it’s previous owner Benguet Corp shut down operations in the
90’s for for concerns of environmental degradation, or the depletion of natural resources. While
2. many claimed they had permission to work on the land afterwards, Benguet Corp is denying any
such approval. This isn’t an unusual case, though. Nationwide, approximately 400,000 people
illegally work on mines and use toxic substances such as Mercury to help with the process.
