Essay on Women in Ministry
Women have been involved in Christian ministry since the very beginning of Christianity. It has
declined and risen according to the acceptance of the environment. The two papers addressed in this
essay document the rise of women ministers in the Holiness movement as well as the decline of
women in the modern Pentecostal movement. In response to this decline in women in ministry,
Courtney Stewart gave points which the UPCI should tackle to rectify the situation. In Holy
Boldness Women Preachers' Autobiographies and the Sanctified Self, the history of women in
ministry is addressed. The excerpt given starts by discussing the pioneers of women ministers–
Wesleyan/Holiness groups. It was in the Holiness movement in the late 19th ... Show more content

The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in
ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast–
forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal
movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as
ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt
out, run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run
down church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According
to Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This
number has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are
women. Norris gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to
theologically defend their position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now
that the climate has changed to where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more
denominations involved in the Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not
willing to license women. 3. There are little or no role models who promote women in

Summary Of Paul's Letter To The Romans
Paul's letter to the Romans reminds believers that they are holy, not on their own accord, but
because of God's mercy (12:1, NIV) "by virtue of our union with Christ" (Chappell, 2011, p. 48). As
well, Hebrews 10:9–10 speaks to our state of holiness: "and by the will, we have been made holy
through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all" and verse 14, "For by one sacrifice
he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy." If one is already holy as Scripture
points out, is it necessary to delve into spiritual disciplines? Is sanctification complete the moment
our sins were washed away by Christ's blood at the cross? This journal entry will examine the
connection between the gospel message, specifically sanctification

The Doctrine Of Sanctification And Biblical And Historical...
When examining a certain theological doctrine, theologians go through several steps of the
theological method. These steps include, philosophical presuppositions, biblical evaluation,
historical development, theological formulation, and practical application. Theologians can use this
method to study the doctrine of sanctification. Throughout life, the Holy Spirit works in believers
and conforms them to the perfect image of God. Sanctification is where they grow and learn to
become more like Jesus. Sanctification will be complete at the return of Jesus. Until that day,
Christians are to follow on Jesus' path and become more like him. The purpose of this essay is to use
the theological method to examine the doctrine of sanctification according to its biblical and
historical foundation. Sanctification is the progressive work of God in a believer's life where one is
holy through Jesus and not through their own works.
When studying sanctification, certain presuppositions are required for the theologian to understand
the doctrine. First, one must believe the Bible to be God inspired and completely inerrant. The Bible
is the highest authority and one must believe what it says about sanctification. Second, one must
have assurance of their salvation. Sanctification is a process exclusively to believers and if one
knows they are saved, they can sincerely apply this to their lives. Third, one must already be
familiar with the stages of salvation before sanctification. These steps

The Theological Formulation Of Repentance
According to John Wesley the theological formulation of repentance means an inward change, a
change of mind from sin to holiness. To qualify it further, he stated that repentance is the total
change of a human heart from a focus on sin to a focus on God. Wesley was deeply convinced that
new believers may not be able to, at the outset, sense the inward sin that remains in one's heart. For
instance, at the point of one's conversion, believers may begin to imagine that all their sins are
removed, and that they have been completely set free from both outward and inward sin. As a result,
one may feel that they will love God with all of the heart, soul, mind and strength and their neighbor
as themselves.
In his sermon, "The Repentance of Believers," Wesley offers why he thinks believers need to
experience repentance. The first crucial repentance is justification. Justification deals effectively
with sin. A repentant sinner before God becomes justified through the merits of Christ imputed to
them. Although, sin no longer rules rebirth Christians, it still resides in one's life. He notes that, "a
conviction of the sin which remains in our heart is one great branch of the repentance" (The
Repentance of Believers, p.407). Wesley undoubtedly expresses that after experiencing pardon, and
justification, believers still struggle with continuing pride, self–will in their hearts, even a will
conflicting to the will of God. Here Wesley predicts that, even with a true believer in Christ one

The Wesleyan View Analysis
The Wesleyan View
Take a look at your life. How would you describe it? Content? Stressful? Or maybe it is a total
mess.
For many of us it's all of the above at times. But God wants a relationship with us. But were so deep
in sin. God had to send his son Jesus Christ to earth to be a sacrifice for us. They beat him till he
was unrecognizable and then nailed him to a cross to dye for our sins. God loves us so much he
gave his son for all of us in the world. But we have to attain sanctification. There has been several
theologians. The first one we will talk about is John Wesley, the Wesleyan View. He was a
theologian and evangelist, he was a student of the writings of the early church fathers. Their

removing corruption caused by sin. The Reformed View say there are three requirements for
sanctification. What is the process of sanctification accomplishing in the life of a Christian?
Hoekema distinguishes between two end results: the proximate and final goals of sanctification.
(Dieter, Hoekema, Horton, McQuilkin, & Walvoord, n.d., ) The final end of our sanctification is the
glorification of God. This is implied by Paul's use of the phrase, "That we should be to the praise of
his glory, who first trusted in Christ. (Ephesians 1:12" KJV. The proximate goal of sanctification is
our perfection: God's desire that every Christian be conformed to the likeness of Christ)

but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. )

Sin Definition Essay
In this life, there is sin. Sin is defined as a transgression or act against God. It is commonly
characterized by selfish intentions. Pride, ego, and desire are most often the culprits behind the
initiation of a sinful act. It comes from following personal feelings more than following God's Word.
Lying, cheating, jealousy, bragging, and hatred are just a few examples of sinful behavior. A life full
of sin ultimately leads to destruction. God's love for us is unfathomable and sin is not His desire for
us. God desires for us to live a life full of love, giving of our self to Him, and modeling our life to
Jesus. What might you ask is God's reward for living a life for Him? According to Romans 6:23,
"For the wages of sin is death, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The heart of holiness lies in the restoration of God's image in us." (Tidball 21) Christians may
claim to be holy because they choose good behavior and avoid sin, but holiness is more than that.
Christ is our human example of holiness. Holiness is nurturing the character of Christ in us. In the
3rd chapter of Colossians, Paul tells of Christ's unique qualities that make one holy, emphasizing
love to be the most important, "clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness,
and patience." (Col. 3.12) "And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in
perfect unity." (Col. 3.14) In the book Sanctification: Explorations in Theology and Practice, Derek
Tidball talks about being holy means to have "the unblemished image of God in a human being."
(27) He also comments that it is "to be truly human and truly Christ–like."(27) In Leviticus 19:1–2
the Lord says to Moses, "be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy." (NIV) God is the epitome
of holy. He is sinless, all loving, and no one can compare to His perfection. When saying we need to
be holy, God does not ask us to be perfect like Him, but strive to be perfect. In 2 Corinthians 13:11,
the word says "to aim for perfection". (NIV) God asks us to set ourselves apart from the world,
living our day to day lives according to His standards, reflecting His righteousness in love. Tidball
sums it up well when he says, "Holiness is more than avoiding sin. It is cultivating the character of
Christ in us."(24) It is "the very Godness of God". (Lodahl

assign to other genders. That being said gay men are typically perceived to be more feminine than
straight men. The author also discusses lesbians but for the sake of this study I will only be covering
the other. The author also explores how people perceive the level of masculinity and femininity of
people whose sexual orientation is ambiguous, and whether there is a difference in perception
depending on whether the target is male or female. The results from this study suggests that people

masculinity and femininity are measured in their communities. However, there is also some support
for the concept that bisexual people are generally perceived to be androgynous as opposed to cross

Wesley 's Theology Of Justification, Sanctification, And...
This week's reading concentrated on the relational aspects of the second and third persons of the
trinity and how they contribute to Wesley's theology of justification, sanctification, and assurance.
Wesley saw the Christ as holding the three offices of prophet, priest, and king which I hear within
my studies on a regular basis. Also, Wesley sees Jesus as being Creator, Author, Supporter, and
Preserver from his relational position within the trinity. Even though I have difficulty accepting the
idea of Jesus atoning for humanity's sins, Wesley apparently accepted it whole heartedly through his
understanding of the rhetoric of the day such as the satisfaction theory and penal substitution.
Regardless of how it was accomplished, it is clear that Wesley found it to be a sacrifice of love for
humanity and that love carries forward into the third person of the trinity, the Holy Spirit.
Wesley met the filioque controversy head on by stating with certainty that the Holy Spirit is the
essence of the Christ and of course God. With this perception, Wesley makes an easy transition from
the loving sacrifice of Jesus moving into the prevenient grace which stirs within each person due to
the presence of the Holy Spirit. I found it interesting that Wesley categorizes the gifts of the Spirit
into extraordinary and ordinary. Then again, it can simply be a continuance of his loathsome
sentiment toward ecstatic worship. The tongues bestowed upon the early church were extraordinary

Meaning Of Sanctification In Romans
Deliverance from sin's power and hell comes through a transformation of one's heart, which happens
only through a believer's repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. The outcome of this true
transformation is sanctification. This paper will address Paul's message, about sanctification, in
Romans, including but not limited to chapters 8, 6, 7, and 12.
The Christian life in modern times is often referred to in the bible as tool of reflection and action.
Sometimes the descriptions can be vague and left for the imagination of the believer. Long–time
scholars have used the ideas of the bible to interpret what the scriptures truly mean. In the book of
Romans Paul writes instructions to the church. This is surrounded around man's sinful nature, with
the ability to get back in Gods good graces. This research paper should serve as the research that
sheds light on sanctification through a Christians life using salvation.
Definition
The meaning of Sanctification takes on several meanings but overall it reflects the process in which
Christians experience a life redemption through faith and actions. Outside of religion, It can be
looked at as the way and purpose that someone lives their life on a day to day basis. Paul uses
himself as an example initially which sets the tone for how this is used. The process of sanctification
starts with holy justification and is shown as an ongoing life's work. In the Bible we can point this
out by other examples of people and places throughout.

The Language Of Entire Sanctification
I think the language of entire sanctification does get confusing because we use the terms
interchangeably. Properly speaking there are three "stages" of sanctifying grace. "Initial
sanctification" begins with justification. At this time we are "declared holy" (imputed righteousness)
because the righteousness of Christ is applied to our lives. We begin our journey in holiness here.
"Progressive sanctification" applies to our entire life in Christ. Through grace and the work of the
Holy Spirit, our character and actions are changed over time as we become more and more
Christlike (imparted righteousness). "Entire Sanctification" is the term that creates all the confusion.
We understand entire sanctification to be a "second moment" in our

Carpenter, A. D. (2015). Sanctification as a human process: reading Calvin alongside child
development theory. Journal Of The Society Of Christian Ethics, 35(1), 103–119.
In this article, the author discusses the relationship between Calvin theology of sanctification and
some of the developmental theories of psychology information of children morals. There is a sense
in which human beings get morally transformed when they are young. The context in which they
will be loved and supported fully by their parents (either divine or human) has a great impact on
their lives.
The author notes that "parents will want to steer their children toward success in every way they
can, but the pressure from meritocracy can sometimes put such love on a false basis." Therefore, the
attributes that are expected in parents sometimes come through salvation. Salvation brings forth
what Jesus had (justification and sanctification) which are essential for children development.
This article supports the fact that human beings require ego, personal and collective unconscious.
The parents have a great influence on their children based on what they inherited. The knowledge
and concepts are fundamental in shaping characters and self–beliefs of children as they grow up.
Emergent theories have been associated with research and ideas of various disciplines. They are
comprised of the mini–theories which provide concepts on behaviors such as self–esteem formation
and socialization in early childhood.

Business For The Glory Of God Essay
Author's Main Themes Grudem's, Business for the glory of God is a sleek, contemporary how to

"Ownership," "Productivity", "Employment", ''Commercial Transactions", "Profit", "Money",
"Inequality of Possessions", "Competition", and "Borrowing and Lending". He takes each
component and demonstrates a connection with theological principles. The author stresses man was
created to glorify God. If we imitate God's attributes in business practices, we can then, in turn,
glorify God. He states that these areas offer "multiple layers of opportunities give glory to God"

component i.e "Ownership," can be misused, then he offers scripture to reinforce each concept and
strategies on how each can be accomplish in a way that imitate God nature. This arrangement
delivers an agreeable flow of the material. This book would be beneficial to New Christians
endeavoring to relate a biblical perspective into their business profession. I found the book
straightforward and easily understandable. I agree that man was created to glorify God through his
actions. The author suggests we "practice honesty, faithfulness, fairness, and freedom of choice"

Man was created in the image of God, imago Dei. Man was created for love and to love God. Man
knew truth and happiness. God did/does not want to force us into relationship and so He gave us
free will. Adam and Eve exercised this free will in the garden and they fell from grace; the fall.
Adam rejected the moral law that has three uses (to show sin in the world; to bring man to Christ; to
keep man alive). The moral law is right and good concerning all things. The moral law shows us
that we must keep close to Christ and we will keep close to the law. It is in Christ that we find
freedom from the law. Wesley instructs that believers must keep the moral law to grow deeper in
God's grace. Adam also rejected the presence of God. In this place– man ... Show more content on

We are babies, born again, and as we mature in faith we move closer to the likeness of Christ.
Assurance to Wesley was the belief that man could know they were saved. Wesley did not use the
word conversion a lot. It is when a person goes from being a "child of the world" to a "child of
God." This occurs due to a person's response to prevenient grace. Once a person realizes they are in
need of God and have sin in their lives they are led to repentance. At this moment the person is
justified. This is evident when regeneration occurs and the person is born again. All of this is a gift
from God. This all begins the process of sanctification. A person then is aware of sin in their lives
and the battle it brings and wants to continue to be in the peace of God that comes at justification.
Repentance and the works suitable for repentance fills the person's life. It is the acts that causes the
person to know they need Christ. Being in a regenerated state, a complete renewal of the inside, the
person moves into being an Altogether Christian, totally committed to God and relationship with
Him. The Spirit of Adoption is present in the life of the person. Praise the

Jesus is the truth.
Jesus indicates that God 's Word (logos, also Jesus Himself) is the Truth. Remember He said this
earlier in John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to
the Father but through Me." God is "I am." This is the inception of existence. In God it is the purity
of all things, untainted. It is the Truth, God is the Truth, Jesus is the Truth, the Holy Spirit is the
Truth.
Jesus sanctified Himself.
This is where we get "Jesus did what man could not." It is what He came here for, to undo the grip
sin had on mankind (Read Genesis 3 to see the full consequences of sin). Maybe that seemed a little
too colloquial for you. Let 's look at it this way. The fall of man brought sin into the world. Since
then, man has been trying to reconcile himself (this is why we all have an inward nature of
understanding there is a difference between right and wrong). God then set up "The Law": a list of
rules that need to be met entirely, completely, and infinitely. It outlined what man must do to
reconcile himself. God even set apart an entire nation, cleansed them from all defilement, gave them
the skinny on how to live holy and without blemish, and they could not accomplish it. This is why
Jesus came. This is why God came. (depending on your current theology, you may or may not agree
that I just repeated the same sentence) How did Jesus sanctify Himself? He fulfilled The

I Corinthians offers the reader an insight into the early beginnings of the New Testament church, its
structure, methods, and message. I Corinthians is Paul's answer to a previous letter he has written to
the Corinthians regarding the conditions in the Corinthian church. The picture Paul painted of the
early church also includes a problematic, non–typical congregation (Utley 18). Paul is not
questioning their salvation per say but challenging their sanctification (Wallace). The goal of this

They have been cowardly and acting like children (3:1–2), as well as full of strife (1:11). Paul
desires, on behalf of the Corinthians, the pardoning mercy, sanctifying grace, and comforting peace
of God, through Jesus Christ (Henry). Paul references Our Lord Jesus Christ six times in the
salutation to remind the Corinthians to not make too frequent or too honorable mention of him
(McGee). By the time Paul reached Corinth, it was a booming Roman town, having been colonized
by Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. Paul ministered in Corinth for 18 months, probably in A.D. 51 and 52.
When others depict a person as Corinthian, the implication is one of lust, lasciviousness, and luxury.
Corinth was ignorant of the true God, entirely self–governing as a Roman colony, and self–centered
in her own world. The city was going in the opposite direction that God had planned for his church
(Constable). Much of this discourse was caused by the fact Corinth had become a crossroads for
both land and sea trade. Much of the sea trade of the Mediterranean from east to west passed
directly through Corinth. Such trade venues made Corinth a vast commercial center with great
wealth. With great luxuries comes sin and discourse (Deffinbaugh). Paul begins by addressing the
divisiveness in the church (1:10–4:21). The divisiveness was a result of loyalty to a person and the
influence of their own distinct

Analysis Of Andrew Murray 's With Christ And The Joy Of...
In Andrew Murray's With Christ in the School of Prayer, it is proposed from the words of John (1
John 2:12–14) that, "In the Christian life there are three great stages of experience: the first is that of
the new–born child filled with the assurance and the joy of forgiveness, the second is that of
transition, of struggle and growth in knowledge and strength, and is comparable to young men
growing strong, and the final stage of maturity and ripeness is that of the Fathers, who have entered
deeply into the knowledge and fellowship of the Eternal One." These stages suggest progression and
development over a period of time in the life of a Christian. To better understand the manner in
which development occurs in the Christian life it is necessary to address the subject of progressive
sanctification. I will expound upon this subject through an explanation of the meaning of
progressive sanctification, how it is manifested in the local church, what the Bible says about
moving from spiritual infancy to maturity, and the role of discipleship in the process.
According to the Oxford American Dictionary, the words progressive and sanctification together
implies the gradual development of being set apart and made holy. In order to gain a better
understanding and appreciation of this development it is important to understand its origin and
nature. First of all, when a person is born of the spirit upon the confession of Jesus Christ as Lord

Introduction As the world becomes more engrained with technology. The growing threats and
security vulnerabilities propose a great concern to keep our digital information private and out of the
hands of thieves, hackers, and abusers. According to David Donahoo quoted in the Liberty Journal,
"The more information that is available in the cyber world, the larger the pie becomes as far as a
cyber criminal is concerned." (Menard, 2015) In other words, information security is becoming a
vital intrinsic absolute when we consider the luxury our technology has brought us on a daily basis.
More so, in the spiritual sense the biblical doctrine of sanctification also plays a vital role in the
health of our own spiritual lives. Sanctification as defined by Wayne Grudem, "is a progressive
work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual
lives." (Grudem, 1994) With that said,

Summary Of The Scripture Way Of Salvation By John Wesley
John Wesley argued Christian perfection throughout his ministry. His quest was holy living. Wesley
was focused with the life of holiness than with the philosophy concerning holiness and he was
engrossed in the experience than in its principles. When Wesley talked about development in
holiness, and the fundamental goal of being entire sanctification, he was fixed that sanctification and
justification is by faith. In his preaching, "The Scripture Way of Salvation", Wesley expounded the
faith by which Christians are perfected is because God is able, he promised in Scripture, he is
willing, and he really does it 1) God has foretold this in Scripture. 2) What God promises, God is
able to do. 3) God is capable and willing to manage it right away. 4) God actually answers this.
Wesley concluded the sermon by exhorting his audience "expect it by faith, expect it as you are, and
expect it now!"
He communicates justification is by grace through faith as a qualified change in a person's

Romans Sanctification
Justification produces positive outcomes in the lives of the believer. Because justification is the
declaration of righteousness before God, the results are somewhat limited to the believer's standing
before God. As stated previously, sanctification is a continuing process which bears its fruits.
However, none of these need considering when discussing justification.
The epistle to the Romans contains one of the most often quoted verses in Scripture. "Therefore,
there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1) Justification caused
this freedom, this blessing. According to Stott, "The first blessing of salvation is expressed in the
words 'no condemnation', which are equivalent to 'justification'" 13(217). In fact,

Entire Sanctification Research Paper
Entire Sanctification
The term and concept of "entire sanctification" is taught through the Wesleyan movement and
comes from 1 Thessalonians, "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and
may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ" (1 Thessalonians 5:23, NKJV). One way to pursue entire sanctification is described in
Leviticus and called the "Holiness Code". It is a list of rules to follow to remain "whole" or
"untarnished" in God's eyes.
Many Christians do not appear to be seeking entire sanctification on a daily basis, primarily only on
Sundays when they attend service. The world is very materialistic, selfish and negative in all aspects
of life and a majority of people accept it and do not try to change it. The necessity for entire
sanctification is just as important today as it was in biblical times; the world is "broke" and "whole"
Christians is it needs to survive and thrive. Christians should actively seek Christ–like qualities;
love, compassion, humbleness, self–control, prayerfulness, patience, servitude, forgiveness, etc.
Being one with God and becoming Holy like Him is a daily endeavor made with conscience effort
and choices. Entire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The importance of seeking entire sanctification in one's daily life should be imparted in all church
services along with examples that are relatable to people. The understanding that "entire" or
"perfect" should not discourage people; it is attainable and the biblical intent of it is to be "a person
or thing is as complete as it was designed or expected to be at that moment" (Culbertson, Hahn, &
Nelson, n.d.). Church leaders need to live the "want to be sinless" life, be open an honest with their
congregation when they fall short, and demonstrate the faith and perseverance to keep trying to be

Edward T. Welch Spiritual Growth In The Face Of...
Journal of Biblical Counseling: Journal Reflection The article chosen for the Journal Reflection
assignment was, "Spiritual Growth in the Face of Psychiatric Disorders" written by Edward T.
Welch. The author's purpose for this article was to identify the basic theological tools to help those
who identify themselves in psychiatric terms, and then illustrate what sanctification can look like for
three individuals who live with a physically based weakness. Welch hoped to accomplish this
purpose by first acknowledging that a division between psychiatric diagnoses and Scripture exist,
second claiming that in order for a pastor to properly counsel there are first steps of pastoral care to
be taken, third pastors must remember two basic theological ... Show more content on

This allows those who identify with psychiatric diagnosis to recognize that Scripture does speak to
them and they can be loved by the church community and grow in Christ. Welch suggests that in
order for the church to attain this goal the church should be more active when someone has a
physical affliction, including a psychiatric one. However, one objection that I find is that in order for
the church to be more active to the one who is afflicted, the afflicted must see the church or
pastorate as an authority that can help in their situation. One cannot assume that members who are
afflicted are comfortable or believe that pastors or the church has the ability to understand their
problems. To help members who are diagnosed with a psychiatric weakness, the church must prove
that they are relevant in their area of weakness and have an authoritative role. Welch claims that to
adequately minister to others we must understand their weaknesses because understanding their
weaknesses will make our help more appropriate and meaningful. By having this knowledge, a
pastor can begin to acknowledge the weakness to the afflicted giving them the assurance that
someone does understand them and can help. This is insight for me to realize that the first step to
helping someone who suffers from a psychiatric diagnosis with sanctification is to understand them.
The next step in sanctification for the afflicted, would be understanding that strength can be found in
their weakness. I found this to be encouragement as a counselor understanding that even if there
way of life with a psychiatric diagnosis may never change or develop new habits to help correct
their weaknesses, strength can be found in the everyday perseverance, showing recognizable
spiritual growth traits through their actions of handling their psychiatric diagnosis.

Four Attitudes Toward Memorials
Everyone deals with certain situations differently. In reality, we should all deal with situations the
same. We should all believe in sanctification because it teaches a lesson and allows the mourning
span to be dealt with easier. Let's say someone was dealing with a tragedy, the person may choose to
forget the tragedy while their neighbor may choose to remember. There are said to be four different
ways people respond to tragedies, Ken Foote, a professor from the University of Colorado Boulder,
has proven it. Based on his studies, the four attitudes toward memorials are sanctification,
obliteration, rectification, and designation. Out of all four attitudes, sanctification would be most
helpful. To define sanctification, it is when people

John Wesley Movement Of Grace
The principle element of John Wesley's theology is the supernatural working of God's grace. As
developed by Collins, for Wesley the Christian life was a journey made only possible by the
working of God's grace (Collins, 2007). Through the entire work of God and man, God's nature of
grace is evident. Wesley describes the movement of God's grace in and through man in what he
describes as the Via Salutis or the Way of Salvation. Furthermore, the Via Salutis address several
facets of grace that Wesley identifies, including; prevenient grace, convincing grace, saving grace,
assurance, sanctifying grace and glorifying grace (Collins, 2007). The movement of grace is defined
as prevenient grace, or preemptive grace. Prevenient grace as described ... Show more content on

Wesley's intent is clear. There is a maturing and yielding process that every follower of Christ must
submit to in order to discover the depth and riches of God's love. As Mulholland describes
(Mulholland & Barton, 2017), there is a great union to be had between God and man. Within that
union is the transforming power to discover oneness with God. A union that creates oneness that
relinquishes self–control and yields to the eternal transforming power of God's grace. Further this
process of yielding, uniting, maturing, and pursuing is the central theme of Wesley's desire for every
man, woman, and child to experience the depth of God's holy

John Wesley Beliefs
John Wesley, son of Samuel and Susanna Wesley, was born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, United
Kingdom, on June 17, 1703. On February 9, 1709, a fire broke out in the Wesley household in the
middle of the night. John, only five years old, was left sound asleep in his bed. Fortunately, a
stranger was able to help John escape just before the building collapsed. This monumental moment
led Susanna Wesley to begin a "strict reform." She wrote in one of her personal meditations, "I do
intend to be more particularly careful of the soul of this child, that Thou hast so mercifully Provided
for, than ever I have been, that I may do my endeavour to instill into his mind the principles of Thy
true religion and virtue. Lord, give me grace to do it sincerely ... Show more content on

Wesley believed that sanctification was a process that could be received as an instantaneous
experience after conversion, or later on in life. No matter when sanctification was achieved, the
moment someone received sanctification was the "climax" of their Christian life. He believed that
the "second blessing purified the believer from his inward sin and enabled him to secure perfect
love of God and of his fellowmen." Followers of Wesley had trouble balancing the "crisis and
process views" of Wesley, and the crisis view began to take "precedence over the process view."
Soon, sanctification was no longer viewed as the goal of a Christian life, but the beginning of a
Christian life.
After this experience, Wesley began to emphasize "the importance of the experiential element of
faith." While meeting women who had also felt their hearts "strangely warmed," his mind was
opened to the idea of Methodist women preachers. When asked why he would allow women to
preach, he replied, "Because God owns them in the saving of souls, and who am I to withstand
God?" Wesley eventually died in London at the age of 88 on March 2, 1791. As he died, he cried
out, "The best of all is, God is with

John Wesley 's Sermon On The Scripture Way Of Salvation
John Wesley wrote in his Sermon 16 that the means of grace are understood as "outward signs,
words, or actions ordained by God... to be the ordinary channels whereby (God) might convey to
men preventing, justifying, or sanctifying grace." Means are what happen outside of oneself and the
grace is what does the work inside of ourselves or another way to say this is to say the ways we
receive and experience grace. When we speak of the sacraments we refer to them as outward signs
of an inward and spiritual grace. The means of grace in the sacraments, means are the bread and cup
of communion and the water of the baptism and the liturgy spoken. These act in an outward and
physical way, but the real work is that of the invisible grace we receive. Another way to think about
this is how Wesley wrote in his sermon The Scripture Way of Salvation. On our journey to
sanctification, he states, what keeps us going on the journey are the means of grace, whether they be
for ourselves or done for others. His basic point was that once we are brought into awareness of the
grace and our need to repent and turn from our sin, the means provide the nourishment our souls
need to grow in grace. How else could one grow in grace than by means of grace? The means of
grace fall into two basic categories, works of piety and works of mercy and each of these is divided
into two more subcategories of individual practices and communal practices or what I do and what
we do together. Under works of piety

How Did Early Holiness Themes Influence John Wesley?
In what ways did early Holiness themes influence John Wesley?
Important to the Wesleyan–Holiness tradition is understanding Wesley didn't develop the doctrine of
Holiness from a bias, rather the Holiness message was at the heart of the early Christian church
(Leclerc, 2014). Though Wesley's delineation of entire sanctification differs from many early
writers, the idea of Christian perfection has remain alive since the days of the apostles (Bassett &
Greathouse, 1985) In the first five centuries the early writers such as Irenaeus a native of Asia Minor
who became the bishop of Lyons, wrote primarily to refute Gnosticism, yet became most notable for
his elaboration and development of recapitation soteriology, which was later utilized by Wesley
(Leclerc, 2014). Other writers including Clement of Alexandria and Origen were greatly influenced
by the stoics, yet affirmed the Christian perfecting that comes from a life entirely devoted to God.
Further, Clément's contributed greatly to Wesley's understanding of a personal responsibility to one's
own spirituality (Bassett & Greathouse, 1985). Consequently, after the development of holiness in
the early writers, the Post–Nicene period built on the early writers and thinkers and developed
further holiness concepts that eventually formed the thinking of Wesley. The development of
mysticism and asceticism create a quest for personal holiness and devout life fully yielded to God.
Further, authors such as Macarius development

The Necessity Of God 's Salvation Essay
The Necessity of God 's Salvation
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"(Genesis 1:1, New International Version).
God created the world; the waters, the land, the vegetation, day, night, aquatic life, birds of flight,
land animals, and finally humans. God created us, male and female, in his image, so that we may
live on the earth and may rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the beasts of the land.
So that we may be with God but not equal to God. Man was tempted and rebelled against God
creating a separation, an abyss between us and God which no one could patch or cross. Man was
separated from God. However God wanted to forgive us by sending His son Jesus down onto earth
so that we may be saved. Born of a virgin He preached the Gospel of repentance, healed the
ailments of man, and was a earthly form of God. However some men did not like Him because He
claimed to be equal with God, so Jesus was betrayed into the hands of men who tortured, arrested,
taunted, flogged and later crucified Him. He died on the cross not as a martyr, rather as a symbol of
God 's forgiveness. That God send his one and only Son as a living sacrifice for our sins so that we
may not perish but may go to be with Him in paradise. After three days Jesus rose again and later
ascended into heaven to sit down at the right hand of God. It was then the Holy Spirit was given as
an earthly counselor for us to guide us down the right path. The Christian faith today is based

What Jesus Means to Me
What Jesus Means to Me
Jesus–perhaps the most discoursed name in history. He has transformed and influenced many lives
including mine. To some people, He was a prophet. To others He is a mere legend. To me, he is a
father and a friend, but most of all, He is my Lord and Savior through justification, sanctification,
and redemption. First of all, Jesus is my Savior through justification. Justification by faith is being
attributed by God as righteous, even though we have sinned, and are therefore relieved from guilt
and punishment. "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his
faith is counted for righteousness." –Romans 4:5 The two principles of justification are as follows:

John Wesley's Use Of Atonement Essay
John Wesley's Use of The Atonement
I. Introduction
The Atonement is the base for understanding Christian Holiness in Wesley theology. The atonement
is an important doctrine of the Christian faith. John Wesley was determined that this doctrine was
the greatest importance, and he was zealously disliked what he thought to be misusing of atonement.
John Wesley clearly saws that Christian's doctrinal defenses hangs completely on the work of Christ.
For examples if one's leg is decline, bend or diminished it will not be affective strong enough to do
all things. It is the same principle for atonement works in Christian life. Therefore, Wesley's defense

The reconciliation and atonement is used in various English Bible translations interchangeably, for
example in Romans 5:11. Therefore, another synonym for atonement is called satisfaction. The
word satisfaction was preferred by many Protestant theologians during the reformation time. There
are some theories of the atonement that help to understand the theories of atonement on point. But
for purpose of this commentary I will focus on the theory in which says was the Jesus as substitute
and providing satisfaction to God. It is associated with ancient authors, but has been particularly
prevalent in Protestants. Those Protestant reformers were heavily critical on Wesley's view on
justification and the atonement. While, some liberal Methodist scholars have attacked the penal
substitution theory of atonement. Collins remind us that the substitutionary death of Christ was the
central to Methodist theology as well as it was from reformer. Collins notes that it "drawing the

The Sanctification Of Jerusalem, By Mircea Eliade Essay

The Sanctification of Jerusalem Jerusalem is considered to be among the world's oldest
continuously inhabited cities. It is the birthplace of three major monotheistic faiths: Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam, which is why this city has an extensive history of being at the center of
religious conflicts. Jerusalem became regarded as a holy city when people used it as a place to
symbolize God and His presence as well as where He revealed his miraculous works. Mircea Eliade,
a historian of religion, demonstrates his theory on how hierophanies establishes the basis of religion
and how people see sacredness as something that is valuable to human life because it represents
reality, which then transcribes to existence. According to Eliade, hierophany is defined as a type of
event that manifests sacredness (11). This is a fundamental tool in determining what makes an
ordinary event or object holy. He explains that, "[b]y manifesting the sacred, any object becomes
something else, yet it continues to remain itself, for it continues to participate in its surrounding
cosmic milieu" (Eliade 12). Holy water, for example, remains water despite being blessed by the
priest. However, since it is already blessed with prayer, then it becomes "sacred" to religious people.
It becomes a symbol of protection from any evil as well as a way to cleanse one's soul before
entering the holy church. Hierophany

Understanding Sanctification And Its Impact On God 's Life
Sanctification is the culminating phase of salvation and is both a gift of God the Son of His imputed
righteousness and the gracious work of the Holy Spirit. Additionally though according to Thorsen, it
is also the task of regenerated believers to "strive to express God's love in their experiences"
(Thorsen, 2010, p. 186). Understanding sanctification is important as it impacts one's view on God's
expectations for holiness and the way Believers minister to others. Colossians 1:10–11 says that as
we grow in the mind of Christ or are sanctified, we can live a life worthy, which means to bear fruit,
grow in the knowledge of God and be strengthened with all power. The Holy Spirit enables this to
happen within the community and the human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Romans 5:8 is clear that while we were in our sinful state, God loved us too much to leave us there
and God set they that should inhabit the earth so that they perhaps reach out for God and find him

In 1994, after twenty years of being in and out of relationship with God, I was ready to seriously
turn towards Him and away from the orientation of my fallen will. Looking back at my mid–thirties,
it is easy to see why I married a man that I could not withstand and sought approval through work.
When that marriage dissolved, it did not matter all the wrong things I had done, I was willing to do
whatever it took to regain a relationship with God. As I learned it was as simple as the Ent,

Unfortunately simple does not mean easy nor does it mean fast. The repentance and belief cycle

of the most significant kairos moments came when I discovered Ephesians 2:10, which says that I

time, my identity was solely dependent on the approval of others. Seeing that word, "masterpiece"

The Holy Spirit As Conversion And Sanctification
Many Christians summarized the ministry of the Holy Spirit as conversion and sanctification.
Because our God is holy, He wants us to be holy (1 Peter 1:16). Once we accepted Jesus Christ as
our Savior, we are legally righteous before God because of the atonement of Jesus. Therefore, we
are called saints in Christ. However, we do have sin–polluted minds and body that are not perfected
yet. The result is we are like bipolar man that have inner wars continuous going on. This is the war
described in Romans 6. Although many theologians have different opinions, I believe this passage is
describing the struggling of a believer, instead of a non–believer.

91). This means Dr. Hoekema's reformed position on Sanctification is not the traditional reformed
theology, but an Arminianized American Reformed theology. His positions are very clear that the
believers are new persons, but not yet attained sinless perfection; they must still struggle against sin
(p. 81). Hoekema stated well: The new self is genuinely new, though not yet totally new. The
newness of the new self in not static but dynamic, needing continual renewal, growth and
transformation (p. 81). The reformed emphasis of total corruption gives them strength to resist the
possibility of living in a perfect love for God that one feels no sin (p. 82–83). Consequently, they
regard themselves still not free the law. Although they view keeping God's law as a way of
expressing their gratitude to Him for the gift of salvation (p. 85). Because of their performance,
God's name is glorified and the people of God are perfected. As Horton stated, the Reformed
theology does not give the Holy Spirit enough attention. The doctrines of PCA even says the
miracles are ceased. But Dr. Larkin says well that although he is a Presbyterian, he cannot deny the
Acts of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts and around the world.
On the other side of the spectrum lays the Wesleyan perspective. Developed by John Wesley, the
Methodists thrived many years and brought great revivals to the world. Contrary to the reformed
position, the Methodists believe that there can be a second blessing, or entire

Justification We Are Saved From The Guilt Of God
"By justification we are saved from the guilt of sin and restored to the favour of God." But how can
one be assured their faith has been justified? Assurance was a heated debate during the reformation
period. It is apparent that Wesley wrestled with how to verbalize this piece of salvation puzzle as his
critics found his ideas to be contradictory at times. For sake of clarity, only the explicable attributes
for assurance will be brought forth. First and foremost, God is the source of assurance and not the
individual. Secondly, the fruits of the Spirit are testimony or evidence of justified faith. "The Spirit
of God does give a believer such a testimony of his adoption that while it is present to the soul he
can no more doubt the reality of his sonship than he can doubt of the shining of the sun while he
stands in the full blaze of his beams." In other words, a person is assured that their faith has justified
them from being a servant of God to being a child of God because of the witnessed fruits or signs of
the Holy Spirit working within their heart. A third attribute is that assurance is self–evident. Even
though he spoke in absolute tones, Wesley contemplated assurance for many years as he reconciled
the experience of others. This eventually led him to acknowledge the idea that assurance could vary
for certain people, in extreme circumstance at most. He also conceded from personal experience that
the intensity of assurance can change over time. How, then, does

John Wesley Principle
In the doctrine of John Wesley, one discovers a new objective; distinctive from Wesley's
interpretation of human depravity based upon the Reformed perception of sin, and the requirement
of divine grace for salvation. He distinguished himself from the activists and brought out the
doctrine of prevenient grace into his construction of the doctrine of redemption. Wesley abandoned
the theory of election, electing the concept of conditional election. Consequently, he fused the
teaching of the total sinfulness of a person and the importance of grace with the emphasis on human
liberation, giving birth to his doctrine of sanctification.
His aspect of sanctification derives from an operation of becoming more like Jesus in disposition
and reference. "God's desire for our sanctification as a desire for love to become the constant ruling
temper of our soul." It is a process of cleansing humanity from sin. This made it possible for a
person to enjoy communion with the Father and abide in his presence. He believed genuine
Christian maturity was evidenced by "actions lies behind his identification of love as the sum of
Christian sanctification."
Wesley emphasized the importance of justification, and the confidence of salvation is grounded in
the righteousness of Christ. He considers the progression of sanctification as one of making the
person admirable of salvation. "I am first to inquire wherein that circumcision of the heart consists
which will receive the praise of God." This

The Doctrine Of Salvation And Grace
Thesis Statement
The purpose of this thesis is to provide an understanding of the meaning of Soteriology and the
relation to the Doctrine of Salvation and Grace (Free Grace). Soteriology is "the study of the
doctrine of salvation." Basically, the teaching of Soteriology is part of Systematic Theology. This
paper will approach each aspect of God Divine decrees, from a biblical standpoint and His plan of
salvation. The working of God's plan includes three periods in time:
Eternity Past
Earth's History

Reformed Perspective Analysis
In one paragraph, summarize the Reformed perspective on sanctification.
The Reformed perspective approaches the articles of sanctification as a gracious operation of the
Holy Spirit that renews the entire nature to the image of God, releasing the believer from the
pollution of sin (Dieter et al., ) . Further, setting the believer a part for acts of service that brings
God glory. Yet, as the act of sanctification releases the believer from the pollution of sin, there is yet
a sin nature that "wars" within man, that must not be slowly overcome by a process of "putting off"
and "putting on" to form a new man.
In your view, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the Reformed perspective? A Reformed
adherent would contend that the biblical narrative toward sanctification places a dutiful
responsibility on the participate toward a progressive growth into spiritual maturity (Dieter et al. ).
Further, this process is a life–long act of putting to death sinful action and clothing oneself with
Christ (Dieter et al.). However, as the Reformed adherent holds to a progressive work in maturing in
Christ, the act of Holy Spirit's duty in this action is minimized. Further, some would point out the
Reformed perspective could be seen as "fatalistic" or even "pessimistic" in that man can never be
fully released from his sin nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why? The author defends and clarifies the specifics to biblical sanctification from a Reformed
tradition very well. Central issues including scriptural development of God's desire for holiness, the
biblical theme of holiness and the general thought of God's sovereignty in the matter were

of confusion when explaining the state of the "old man" and the "new man" in reference to a
progressive redemptive

Women in Ministry Essay

  • 1. Essay on Women in Ministry Women have been involved in Christian ministry since the very beginning of Christianity. It has declined and risen according to the acceptance of the environment. The two papers addressed in this essay document the rise of women ministers in the Holiness movement as well as the decline of women in the modern Pentecostal movement. In response to this decline in women in ministry, Courtney Stewart gave points which the UPCI should tackle to rectify the situation. In Holy Boldness Women Preachers' Autobiographies and the Sanctified Self, the history of women in ministry is addressed. The excerpt given starts by discussing the pioneers of women ministers– Wesleyan/Holiness groups. It was in the Holiness movement in the late 19th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast– forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out, run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. There are little or no role models who promote women in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Summary Of Paul's Letter To The Romans Paul's letter to the Romans reminds believers that they are holy, not on their own accord, but because of God's mercy (12:1, NIV) "by virtue of our union with Christ" (Chappell, 2011, p. 48). As well, Hebrews 10:9–10 speaks to our state of holiness: "and by the will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all" and verse 14, "For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy." If one is already holy as Scripture points out, is it necessary to delve into spiritual disciplines? Is sanctification complete the moment our sins were washed away by Christ's blood at the cross? This journal entry will examine the connection between the gospel message, specifically sanctification ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Doctrine Of Sanctification And Biblical And Historical... When examining a certain theological doctrine, theologians go through several steps of the theological method. These steps include, philosophical presuppositions, biblical evaluation, historical development, theological formulation, and practical application. Theologians can use this method to study the doctrine of sanctification. Throughout life, the Holy Spirit works in believers and conforms them to the perfect image of God. Sanctification is where they grow and learn to become more like Jesus. Sanctification will be complete at the return of Jesus. Until that day, Christians are to follow on Jesus' path and become more like him. The purpose of this essay is to use the theological method to examine the doctrine of sanctification according to its biblical and historical foundation. Sanctification is the progressive work of God in a believer's life where one is holy through Jesus and not through their own works. When studying sanctification, certain presuppositions are required for the theologian to understand the doctrine. First, one must believe the Bible to be God inspired and completely inerrant. The Bible is the highest authority and one must believe what it says about sanctification. Second, one must have assurance of their salvation. Sanctification is a process exclusively to believers and if one knows they are saved, they can sincerely apply this to their lives. Third, one must already be familiar with the stages of salvation before sanctification. These steps ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Theological Formulation Of Repentance According to John Wesley the theological formulation of repentance means an inward change, a change of mind from sin to holiness. To qualify it further, he stated that repentance is the total change of a human heart from a focus on sin to a focus on God. Wesley was deeply convinced that new believers may not be able to, at the outset, sense the inward sin that remains in one's heart. For instance, at the point of one's conversion, believers may begin to imagine that all their sins are removed, and that they have been completely set free from both outward and inward sin. As a result, one may feel that they will love God with all of the heart, soul, mind and strength and their neighbor as themselves. In his sermon, "The Repentance of Believers," Wesley offers why he thinks believers need to experience repentance. The first crucial repentance is justification. Justification deals effectively with sin. A repentant sinner before God becomes justified through the merits of Christ imputed to them. Although, sin no longer rules rebirth Christians, it still resides in one's life. He notes that, "a conviction of the sin which remains in our heart is one great branch of the repentance" (The Repentance of Believers, p.407). Wesley undoubtedly expresses that after experiencing pardon, and justification, believers still struggle with continuing pride, self–will in their hearts, even a will conflicting to the will of God. Here Wesley predicts that, even with a true believer in Christ one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Wesleyan View Analysis The Wesleyan View Take a look at your life. How would you describe it? Content? Stressful? Or maybe it is a total mess. For many of us it's all of the above at times. But God wants a relationship with us. But were so deep in sin. God had to send his son Jesus Christ to earth to be a sacrifice for us. They beat him till he was unrecognizable and then nailed him to a cross to dye for our sins. God loves us so much he gave his son for all of us in the world. But we have to attain sanctification. There has been several theologians. The first one we will talk about is John Wesley, the Wesleyan View. He was a theologian and evangelist, he was a student of the writings of the early church fathers. Their influence is what helped to set his beliefs ... The Reformed View say there are three requirements for sanctification. What is the process of sanctification accomplishing in the life of a Christian? Hoekema distinguishes between two end results: the proximate and final goals of sanctification. (Dieter, Hoekema, Horton, McQuilkin, & Walvoord, n.d., ) The final end of our sanctification is the glorification of God. This is implied by Paul's use of the phrase, "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. (Ephesians 1:12" KJV. The proximate goal of sanctification is our perfection: God's desire that every Christian be conformed to the likeness of Christ) (1 John 3:2 KJV;Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. ) ( 1 Corinthians 15:49 KJV; And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the ... • 6. Sin Definition Essay In this life, there is sin. Sin is defined as a transgression or act against God. It is commonly characterized by selfish intentions. Pride, ego, and desire are most often the culprits behind the initiation of a sinful act. It comes from following personal feelings more than following God's Word. Lying, cheating, jealousy, bragging, and hatred are just a few examples of sinful behavior. A life full of sin ultimately leads to destruction. God's love for us is unfathomable and sin is not His desire for us. God desires for us to live a life full of love, giving of our self to Him, and modeling our life to Jesus. What might you ask is God's reward for living a life for Him? According to Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The heart of holiness lies in the restoration of God's image in us." (Tidball 21) Christians may claim to be holy because they choose good behavior and avoid sin, but holiness is more than that. Christ is our human example of holiness. Holiness is nurturing the character of Christ in us. In the 3rd chapter of Colossians, Paul tells of Christ's unique qualities that make one holy, emphasizing love to be the most important, "clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." (Col. 3.12) "And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." (Col. 3.14) In the book Sanctification: Explorations in Theology and Practice, Derek Tidball talks about being holy means to have "the unblemished image of God in a human being." (27) He also comments that it is "to be truly human and truly Christ–like."(27) In Leviticus 19:1–2 the Lord says to Moses, "be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy." (NIV) God is the epitome of holy. He is sinless, all loving, and no one can compare to His perfection. When saying we need to be holy, God does not ask us to be perfect like Him, but strive to be perfect. In 2 Corinthians 13:11, the word says "to aim for perfection". (NIV) God asks us to set ourselves apart from the world, living our day to day lives according to His standards, reflecting His righteousness in love. Tidball sums it up well when he says, "Holiness is more than avoiding sin. It is cultivating the character of Christ in us."(24) It is "the very Godness of God". (Lodahl ... The author also explores how people perceive the level of masculinity and femininity of people whose sexual orientation is ambiguous, and whether there is a difference in perception depending on whether the target is male or female. The results from this study suggests that people 's perceptions of the degree to which a bisexual individual is masculine or feminine depend on how masculinity and femininity are measured in their communities. However, there is also some support for the concept that bisexual people are generally perceived to be androgynous as opposed to cross sex–typed. Holz, I., & Gibson, R. (2009). • 9. Wesley 's Theology Of Justification, Sanctification, And... This week's reading concentrated on the relational aspects of the second and third persons of the trinity and how they contribute to Wesley's theology of justification, sanctification, and assurance. Wesley saw the Christ as holding the three offices of prophet, priest, and king which I hear within my studies on a regular basis. Also, Wesley sees Jesus as being Creator, Author, Supporter, and Preserver from his relational position within the trinity. Even though I have difficulty accepting the idea of Jesus atoning for humanity's sins, Wesley apparently accepted it whole heartedly through his understanding of the rhetoric of the day such as the satisfaction theory and penal substitution. Regardless of how it was accomplished, it is clear that Wesley found it to be a sacrifice of love for humanity and that love carries forward into the third person of the trinity, the Holy Spirit. Wesley met the filioque controversy head on by stating with certainty that the Holy Spirit is the essence of the Christ and of course God. With this perception, Wesley makes an easy transition from the loving sacrifice of Jesus moving into the prevenient grace which stirs within each person due to the presence of the Holy Spirit. I found it interesting that Wesley categorizes the gifts of the Spirit into extraordinary and ordinary. Then again, it can simply be a continuance of his loathsome sentiment toward ecstatic worship. The tongues bestowed upon the early church were extraordinary yet finite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Meaning Of Sanctification In Romans Deliverance from sin's power and hell comes through a transformation of one's heart, which happens only through a believer's repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. The outcome of this true transformation is sanctification. This paper will address Paul's message, about sanctification, in Romans, including but not limited to chapters 8, 6, 7, and 12. The Christian life in modern times is often referred to in the bible as tool of reflection and action. Sometimes the descriptions can be vague and left for the imagination of the believer. Long–time scholars have used the ideas of the bible to interpret what the scriptures truly mean. In the book of Romans Paul writes instructions to the church. This is surrounded around man's sinful nature, with the ability to get back in Gods good graces. This research paper should serve as the research that sheds light on sanctification through a Christians life using salvation. Definition The meaning of Sanctification takes on several meanings but overall it reflects the process in which Christians experience a life redemption through faith and actions. Outside of religion, It can be looked at as the way and purpose that someone lives their life on a day to day basis. Paul uses himself as an example initially which sets the tone for how this is used. The process of sanctification starts with holy justification and is shown as an ongoing life's work. In the Bible we can point this out by other examples of people and places throughout. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Language Of Entire Sanctification I think the language of entire sanctification does get confusing because we use the terms interchangeably. Properly speaking there are three "stages" of sanctifying grace. "Initial sanctification" begins with justification. At this time we are "declared holy" (imputed righteousness) because the righteousness of Christ is applied to our lives. We begin our journey in holiness here. "Progressive sanctification" applies to our entire life in Christ. Journal Of The Society Of Christian Ethics, 35(1), 103–119. In this article, the author discusses the relationship between Calvin theology of sanctification and some of the developmental theories of psychology information of children morals. There is a sense in which human beings get morally transformed when they are young. The context in which they will be loved and supported fully by their parents (either divine or human) has a great impact on their lives. The author notes that "parents will want to steer their children toward success in every way they can, but the pressure from meritocracy can sometimes put such love on a false basis." Therefore, the attributes that are expected in parents sometimes come through salvation. Salvation brings forth what Jesus had (justification and sanctification) which are essential for children development. This article supports the fact that human beings require ego, personal and collective unconscious. The parents have a great influence on their children based on what they inherited. The knowledge and concepts are fundamental in shaping characters and self–beliefs of children as they grow up. Emergent theories have been associated with research and ideas of various disciplines. Be in agreement: Grudem began each chapter showing how the specific component i.e "Ownership," can be misused, then he offers scripture to reinforce each concept and strategies on how each can be accomplish in a way that imitate God nature. This arrangement delivers an agreeable flow of the material. This book would be beneficial to New Christians endeavoring to relate a biblical perspective into their business profession. I found the book straightforward and easily understandable. I agree that man was created to glorify God through his actions. God did/does not want to force us into relationship and so He gave us free will. Adam and Eve exercised this free will in the garden and they fell from grace; the fall. Adam rejected the moral law that has three uses (to show sin in the world; to bring man to Christ; to keep man alive). The moral law is right and good concerning all things. The moral law shows us that we must keep close to Christ and we will keep close to the law. It is in Christ that we find freedom from the law. Wesley instructs that believers must keep the moral law to grow deeper in God's grace. Adam also rejected the presence of God. In this place– man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once a person realizes they are in need of God and have sin in their lives they are led to repentance. At this moment the person is justified. This is evident when regeneration occurs and the person is born again. All of this is a gift from God. This all begins the process of sanctification. This is the inception of existence. In God it is the purity of all things, untainted. It is the Truth, God is the Truth, Jesus is the Truth, the Holy Spirit is the Truth. Jesus sanctified Himself. This is where we get "Jesus did what man could not." It is what He came here for, to undo the grip sin had on mankind (Read Genesis 3 to see the full consequences of sin). Maybe that seemed a little too colloquial for you. Let 's look at it this way. The fall of man brought sin into the world. Since then, man has been trying to reconcile himself (this is why we all have an inward nature of understanding there is a difference between right and wrong). God then set up "The Law": a list of rules that need to be met entirely, completely, and infinitely. It outlined what man must do to reconcile himself. God even set apart an entire nation, cleansed them from all defilement, gave them the skinny on how to live holy and without blemish, and they could not accomplish it. This is why Jesus came. By the time Paul reached Corinth, it was a booming Roman town, having been colonized by Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. Paul ministered in Corinth for 18 months, probably in A.D. 51 and 52. When others depict a person as Corinthian, the implication is one of lust, lasciviousness, and luxury. Corinth was ignorant of the true God, entirely self–governing as a Roman colony, and self–centered in her own world. The city was going in the opposite direction that God had planned for his church (Constable). Much of this discourse was caused by the fact Corinth had become a crossroads for both land and sea trade. Much of the sea trade of the Mediterranean from east to west passed directly through Corinth. Such trade venues made Corinth a vast commercial center with great wealth. In Andrew Murray's With Christ in the School of Prayer, it is proposed from the words of John (1 John 2:12–14) that, "In the Christian life there are three great stages of experience: the first is that of the new–born child filled with the assurance and the joy of forgiveness, the second is that of transition, of struggle and growth in knowledge and strength, and is comparable to young men growing strong, and the final stage of maturity and ripeness is that of the Fathers, who have entered deeply into the knowledge and fellowship of the Eternal One." These stages suggest progression and development over a period of time in the life of a Christian. To better understand the manner in which development occurs in the Christian life it is necessary to address the subject of progressive sanctification. I will expound upon this subject through an explanation of the meaning of progressive sanctification, how it is manifested in the local church, what the Bible says about moving from spiritual infancy to maturity, and the role of discipleship in the process. According to the Oxford American Dictionary, the words progressive and sanctification together implies the gradual development of being set apart and made holy. Wesley was focused with the life of holiness than with the philosophy concerning holiness and he was engrossed in the experience than in its principles. When Wesley talked about development in holiness, and the fundamental goal of being entire sanctification, he was fixed that sanctification and justification is by faith. In his preaching, "The Scripture Way of Salvation", Wesley expounded the faith by which Christians are perfected is because God is able, he promised in Scripture, he is willing, and he really does it 1) God has foretold this in Scripture. 2) What God promises, God is able to do. 3) God is capable and willing to manage it right away. 4) God actually answers this. Wesley concluded the sermon by exhorting his audience "expect it by faith, expect it as you are, and expect it now!" He communicates justification is by grace through faith as a qualified change in a person's conversion. Besides, he accentuates the real change that takes place in a person's heart and life as a soul become new creatures in Christ. "I will make you a raw heart and place a young spirit in you; I will take away from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." Entire Sanctification Research Paper Entire Sanctification The term and concept of "entire sanctification" is taught through the Wesleyan movement and comes from 1 Thessalonians, "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thessalonians 5:23, NKJV). One way to pursue entire sanctification is described in Leviticus and called the "Holiness Code". It is a list of rules to follow to remain "whole" or "untarnished" in God's eyes. Many Christians do not appear to be seeking entire sanctification on a daily basis, primarily only on Sundays when they attend service. The world is very materialistic, selfish and negative in all aspects of life and a majority of people accept it and do not try to change it. The necessity for entire sanctification is just as important today as it was in biblical times; the world is "broke" and "whole" Christians is it needs to survive and thrive. Journal of Biblical Counseling: Journal Reflection The article chosen for the Journal Reflection assignment was, "Spiritual Growth in the Face of Psychiatric Disorders" written by Edward T. Welch. The author's purpose for this article was to identify the basic theological tools to help those who identify themselves in psychiatric terms, and then illustrate what sanctification can look like for three individuals who live with a physically based weakness. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allows those who identify with psychiatric diagnosis to recognize that Scripture does speak to them and they can be loved by the church community and grow in Christ. Welch suggests that in order for the church to attain this goal the church should be more active when someone has a physical affliction, including a psychiatric one. However, one objection that I find is that in order for the church to be more active to the one who is afflicted, the afflicted must see the church or pastorate as an authority that can help in their situation. One cannot assume that members who are afflicted are comfortable or believe that pastors or the church has the ability to understand their problems. To help members who are diagnosed with a psychiatric weakness, the church must prove that they are relevant in their area of weakness and have an authoritative role. Welch claims that to adequately minister to others we must understand their weaknesses because understanding their weaknesses will make our help more appropriate and meaningful. By having this knowledge, a pastor can begin to acknowledge the weakness to the afflicted giving them the assurance that someone does understand them and can help. This is insight for me to realize that the first step to helping someone who suffers from a psychiatric diagnosis with sanctification is to understand them. The next step in sanctification for the afflicted, would be understanding that strength can be found in their weakness. I found this to be encouragement as a counselor understanding that even if there way of life with a psychiatric diagnosis may never change or develop new habits to help correct their weaknesses, strength can be found in the everyday perseverance, showing recognizable spiritual growth traits through their actions of handling their psychiatric diagnosis. ... On February 9, 1709, a fire broke out in the Wesley household in the middle of the night. John, only five years old, was left sound asleep in his bed. Fortunately, a stranger was able to help John escape just before the building collapsed. This monumental moment led Susanna Wesley to begin a "strict reform." She wrote in one of her personal meditations, "I do intend to be more particularly careful of the soul of this child, that Thou hast so mercifully Provided for, than ever I have been, that I may do my endeavour to instill into his mind the principles of Thy true religion and virtue. Wesley believed that sanctification was a process that could be received as an instantaneous experience after conversion, or later on in life. No matter when sanctification was achieved, the moment someone received sanctification was the "climax" of their Christian life. He believed that the "second blessing purified the believer from his inward sin and enabled him to secure perfect love of God and of his fellowmen." Followers of Wesley had trouble balancing the "crisis and process views" of Wesley, and the crisis view began to take "precedence over the process view." Soon, sanctification was no longer viewed as the goal of a Christian life, but the beginning of a Christian life. After this experience, Wesley began to emphasize "the importance of the experiential element of faith." While meeting women who had also felt their hearts "strangely warmed," his mind was opened to the idea of Methodist women preachers. When asked why he would allow women to preach, he replied, "Because God owns them in the saving of souls, and who am I to withstand God?" John Wesley 's Sermon On The Scripture Way Of Salvation John Wesley wrote in his Sermon 16 that the means of grace are understood as "outward signs, words, or actions ordained by God... to be the ordinary channels whereby (God) might convey to men preventing, justifying, or sanctifying grace." Means are what happen outside of oneself and the grace is what does the work inside of ourselves or another way to say this is to say the ways we receive and experience grace. When we speak of the sacraments we refer to them as outward signs of an inward and spiritual grace. The means of grace in the sacraments, means are the bread and cup of communion and the water of the baptism and the liturgy spoken. These act in an outward and physical way, but the real work is that of the invisible grace we receive. Another way to think about this is how Wesley wrote in his sermon The Scripture Way of Salvation. On our journey to sanctification, he states, what keeps us going on the journey are the means of grace, whether they be for ourselves or done for others. His basic point was that once we are brought into awareness of the grace and our need to repent and turn from our sin, the means provide the nourishment our souls need to grow in grace. How else could one grow in grace than by means of grace? • 30. How Did Early Holiness Themes Influence John Wesley? In what ways did early Holiness themes influence John Wesley? Important to the Wesleyan–Holiness tradition is understanding Wesley didn't develop the doctrine of Holiness from a bias, rather the Holiness message was at the heart of the early Christian church (Leclerc, 2014). Though Wesley's delineation of entire sanctification differs from many early writers, the idea of Christian perfection has remain alive since the days of the apostles (Bassett & Greathouse, 1985) In the first five centuries the early writers such as Irenaeus a native of Asia Minor who became the bishop of Lyons, wrote primarily to refute Gnosticism, yet became most notable for his elaboration and development of recapitation soteriology, which was later utilized by Wesley (Leclerc, 2014). Other writers including Clement of Alexandria and Origen were greatly influenced by the stoics, yet affirmed the Christian perfecting that comes from a life entirely devoted to God. Further, Clément's contributed greatly to Wesley's understanding of a personal responsibility to one's own spirituality (Bassett & Greathouse, 1985). Consequently, after the development of holiness in the early writers, the Post–Nicene period built on the early writers and thinkers and developed further holiness concepts that eventually formed the thinking of Wesley. The development of mysticism and asceticism create a quest for personal holiness and devout life fully yielded to God. Further, authors such as Macarius development ... God created the world; the waters, the land, the vegetation, day, night, aquatic life, birds of flight, land animals, and finally humans. God created us, male and female, in his image, so that we may live on the earth and may rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the beasts of the land. So that we may be with God but not equal to God. Man was tempted and rebelled against God creating a separation, an abyss between us and God which no one could patch or cross. Man was separated from God. However God wanted to forgive us by sending His son Jesus down onto earth so that we may be saved. Born of a virgin He preached the Gospel of repentance, healed the ailments of man, and was a earthly form of God. However some men did not like Him because He claimed to be equal with God, so Jesus was betrayed into the hands of men who tortured, arrested, taunted, flogged and later crucified Him. The Sanctification Of Jerusalem, By Mircea Eliade Essay Gregorio 1 Roxanne Gregorio Scott Abramson AN N EA 10W 24 June 2015 The Sanctification of Jerusalem Jerusalem is considered to be among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It is the birthplace of three major monotheistic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which is why this city has an extensive history of being at the center of religious conflicts. Jerusalem became regarded as a holy city when people used it as a place to symbolize God and His presence as well as where He revealed his miraculous works. Mircea Eliade, a historian of religion, demonstrates his theory on how hierophanies establishes the basis of religion and how people see sacredness as something that is valuable to human life because it represents reality, which then transcribes to existence. According to Eliade, hierophany is defined as a type of event that manifests sacredness (11). This is a fundamental tool in determining what makes an ordinary event or object holy. He explains that, "[b]y manifesting the sacred, any object becomes something else, yet it continues to remain itself, for it continues to participate in its surrounding cosmic milieu" (Eliade 12). Holy water, for example, remains water despite being blessed by the priest. However, since it is already blessed with prayer, then it becomes "sacred" to religious people. It becomes a symbol of protection from any evil as well as a way to cleanse one's soul before entering the holy church. Hierophany Gregorio 2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Understanding Sanctification And Its Impact On God 's Life Sanctification is the culminating phase of salvation and is both a gift of God the Son of His imputed righteousness and the gracious work of the Holy Spirit. Additionally though according to Thorsen, it is also the task of regenerated believers to "strive to express God's love in their experiences" (Thorsen, 2010, p. 186). Understanding sanctification is important as it impacts one's view on God's expectations for holiness and the way Believers minister to others. Colossians 1:10–11 says that as we grow in the mind of Christ or are sanctified, we can live a life worthy, which means to bear fruit, grow in the knowledge of God and be strengthened with all power. The Holy Spirit enables this to happen within the community and the human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Romans 5:8 is clear that while we were in our sinful state, God loved us too much to leave us there and God set they that should inhabit the earth so that they perhaps reach out for God and find him (Acts 17:26–27). In 1994, after twenty years of being in and out of relationship with God, I was ready to seriously turn towards Him and away from the orientation of my fallen will. Looking back at my mid–thirties, it is easy to see why I married a man that I could not withstand and sought approval through work. When that marriage dissolved, it did not matter all the wrong things I had done, I was willing to do whatever it took to regain a relationship with God. As I learned it was as simple as the Ent, Treebeard turning to head south in the Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately simple does not mean easy nor does it mean fast. The repentance and belief cycle (Mark 1:14–15) as a result of kairos moments spanning the past twenty years demand seeing my behaviors, thoughts and feelings measured against God's love and as opportunities for growth. One of the most significant kairos moments came when I discovered Ephesians 2:10, which says that I am God's masterpiece created in Christ Jesus to do the good works He has planned for me. At the time, my identity was solely dependent on the approval of others. Seeing that word, "masterpiece" changed everything and opened ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Holy Spirit As Conversion And Sanctification Many Christians summarized the ministry of the Holy Spirit as conversion and sanctification. Because our God is holy, He wants us to be holy (1 Peter 1:16). Once we accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, we are legally righteous before God because of the atonement of Jesus. Therefore, we are called saints in Christ. However, we do have sin–polluted minds and body that are not perfected yet. The result is we are like bipolar man that have inner wars continuous going on. This is the war described in Romans 6. Although many theologians have different opinions, I believe this passage is describing the struggling of a believer, instead of a non–believer. With my own understandings laid out clearly, now I am going to share my reading experience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 91). This means Dr. Hoekema's reformed position on Sanctification is not the traditional reformed theology, but an Arminianized American Reformed theology. His positions are very clear that the believers are new persons, but not yet attained sinless perfection; they must still struggle against sin (p. 81). Hoekema stated well: The new self is genuinely new, though not yet totally new. The newness of the new self in not static but dynamic, needing continual renewal, growth and transformation (p. 81). The reformed emphasis of total corruption gives them strength to resist the possibility of living in a perfect love for God that one feels no sin (p. 82–83). Consequently, they regard themselves still not free the law. Although they view keeping God's law as a way of expressing their gratitude to Him for the gift of salvation (p. 85). Because of their performance, God's name is glorified and the people of God are perfected. As Horton stated, the Reformed theology does not give the Holy Spirit enough attention. The doctrines of PCA even says the miracles are ceased. But Dr. Larkin says well that although he is a Presbyterian, he cannot deny the Acts of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts and around the world. On the other side of the spectrum lays the Wesleyan perspective. Developed by John Wesley, the Methodists thrived many years and brought great revivals to the world. • 38. Justification We Are Saved From The Guilt Of God "By justification we are saved from the guilt of sin and restored to the favour of God." But how can one be assured their faith has been justified? Assurance was a heated debate during the reformation period. It is apparent that Wesley wrestled with how to verbalize this piece of salvation puzzle as his critics found his ideas to be contradictory at times. For sake of clarity, only the explicable attributes for assurance will be brought forth. First and foremost, God is the source of assurance and not the individual. Secondly, the fruits of the Spirit are testimony or evidence of justified faith. "The Spirit of God does give a believer such a testimony of his adoption that while it is present to the soul he can no more doubt the reality of his sonship than he can doubt of the shining of the sun while he stands in the full blaze of his beams." In other words, a person is assured that their faith has justified them from being a servant of God to being a child of God because of the witnessed fruits or signs of the Holy Spirit working within their heart. A third attribute is that assurance is self–evident. Even though he spoke in absolute tones, Wesley contemplated assurance for many years as he reconciled the experience of others. This eventually led him to acknowledge the idea that assurance could vary for certain people, in extreme circumstance at most. He also conceded from personal experience that the intensity of assurance can change over time. How, then, does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. John Wesley Principle In the doctrine of John Wesley, one discovers a new objective; distinctive from Wesley's interpretation of human depravity based upon the Reformed perception of sin, and the requirement of divine grace for salvation. He distinguished himself from the activists and brought out the doctrine of prevenient grace into his construction of the doctrine of redemption. Wesley abandoned the theory of election, electing the concept of conditional election. Consequently, he fused the teaching of the total sinfulness of a person and the importance of grace with the emphasis on human liberation, giving birth to his doctrine of sanctification. His aspect of sanctification derives from an operation of becoming more like Jesus in disposition and reference. "God's desire for our sanctification as a desire for love to become the constant ruling temper of our soul." It is a process of cleansing humanity from sin. This made it possible for a person to enjoy communion with the Father and abide in his presence. He believed genuine Christian maturity was evidenced by "actions lies behind his identification of love as the sum of Christian sanctification." Wesley emphasized the importance of justification, and the confidence of salvation is grounded in the righteousness of Christ. He considers the progression of sanctification as one of making the person admirable of salvation. "I am first to inquire wherein that circumcision of the heart consists which will receive the praise of God." This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Reformed Perspective Analysis In one paragraph, summarize the Reformed perspective on sanctification. The Reformed perspective approaches the articles of sanctification as a gracious operation of the Holy Spirit that renews the entire nature to the image of God, releasing the believer from the pollution of sin (Dieter et al., ) . Further, setting the believer a part for acts of service that brings God glory. Yet, as the act of sanctification releases the believer from the pollution of sin, there is yet a sin nature that "wars" within man, that must not be slowly overcome by a process of "putting off" and "putting on" to form a new man. In your view, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the Reformed perspective? A Reformed adherent would contend that the biblical narrative toward sanctification places a dutiful responsibility on the participate toward a progressive growth into spiritual maturity (Dieter et al. ). Further, this process is a life–long act of putting to death sinful action and clothing oneself with Christ (Dieter et al.). However, as the Reformed adherent holds to a progressive work in maturing in Christ, the act of Holy Spirit's duty in this action is minimized. Further, some would point out the Reformed perspective could be seen as "fatalistic" or even "pessimistic" in that man can never be fully released from his sin nature. ... Central issues including scriptural development of God's desire for holiness, the biblical theme of holiness and the general thought of God's sovereignty in the matter were developed well (Dieter et al.) . Yet, the author, possibly in hopes to remain concise, did create a bit of confusion when explaining the state of the "old man" and the "new man" in reference to a progressive redemptive ...
