time, a mindset which propelled the westward expansion of America. Manifest Destiny was the belief that the expansion of the United States
throughout the continent of North America was both justified and inevitable. The actual term "Manifest destiny" was not coined until 1845 when an
American columnist and editor, John O 'Sullivan, created it to promote the annexations of Texas and the Oregon Territory. However, before the term
was coined, expansion had already been taking place in America for almost four decades. Beginning in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase, America had
set in stone from early in its beginnings that the frontier was the future. To fulfill this belief, the United States needed to purchase the West from the
French. On the last day of April in the year 1803, James Monroe signed three agreements with the French government that caused the United States to
double in size. The Louisiana Purchase gave all of the Louisiana Territory and New Orleans to America in exchange for 15 million dollars. This

However, conciliating the sections was a very difficult task. He also earned the hostility of the northerners and westerners, who believed Polk
favored the South. As the sectional debate intensified, Polk offered his support to a proposal that would extend the Missouri Compromise line
through the new territories to the Pacific Coast, banning slavery north of the line and permitting it south of the line. The opposition supported a
plan that would allow the people of each territory to decide the status of slavery there. Polk, who was not in good health, declined to run again for
president. The Democrats then nominated Lewis Cass of Michigan, a dull, aging party regular. The Whigs nominated a man who was a hero of
the Mexican war, but was a man with little to no political experience: General Zachary Taylor. Taylor ended up securing the presidency by a very
narrow margin. Taylor believed that statehood could be the solution to the issue of slavery in some territories. So long as the new states remained
territories, the federal government was ultimately responsible for deciding the fate of slavery within them. Once the territories became states, it
would be up to their own governments to decide whether they wanted to ban slavery or not. Taylor urged and succeeded in getting California to
adopt a constitution that banned slavery. In December of 1849, Taylor petitioned Congress to admit California as a free state. Congress was
extremely hesitant to approve because of several other controversies concerning slavery that were severely complicating the debate. One such
controversy was the efforts of antislavery forces to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia. Another was the emergence of personal liberty in the

The nineteenth century brought on a doctrine of belief based on American Exceptionalism that Americans were destined by God to settle in the land to
the west. The westward movement of the American people meant occupation of all land regardless of who was already present on it. This "destiny" of
the American people manifested itself by causing horrible depredations to the native populations and stripped them of the land they had lived on for
millennia.
The idea of manifest destiny originated with Jane Cazneau but was stolen by a man named John O'sullivan who coined the term when he published an
essay that put to words the existing American belief that it was their God given mission to travel west and spread democracy throughout the country....
At the time when Texas still belonged to Mexico, Mexico looked up to America's republic and established one of their own. They began offering land
grants to anyone wanting to move into the territory and farm the area as it proved good for agriculture, especially cotton. A huge influx of settlers
immigrated to the area and quickly outnumbered the Mexicans and the Comanche Indians that lived there bringing with them slaves that were not
allowed under Mexico's republic. Settlers not adhering to the law of the land made the Mexican government threaten to rescind the land grants they
provided, which in turn angered settlers and the conflict began. Mexico sent and army led by Santa Anna to the Texas area to face off with the Texans
who were making their stand at the Alamo. Santa Anna wiped out all of the Texans present at the Alamo, but went on to be defeated by Sam Houston
and his army of Texans. This loss for Mexico resulted in them signing a treating granting Texas to America, which eventually was admitted into the

Manifest Destiny was a phase that was made up by journalist John L. O'sullivan back in 1844. O'sullivan thought that expansion of the country would
make it a stronger nation. The United States wanted to push westward to the frontier, towards Texas, California, and Oregon. The reason behind
Manifest Destiny was to expand to provide new places to live and more job opportunities. Manifest Destiny is the belief that the Americans could extend
themselves from coast to coast. It is known as an ideology that started American history. The Americans were determined to conquer the land so they

that the Native Americans did not fit in with civilization and they needed to be removed from the land so that they could continue their way of live
