American Cowboy Research Paper
The American cowboy's heyday only lasted about twenty years, from 1880–1900. The men that were called "cowboy" were mostly just work hands
moving from place to place looking for work. The Real cowboys were nothing much like what we envision them today or how Hollywood has
portrayed them, but that does not really matter, the Idea of the cowboy and his code has shaped America in many different ways. The Cowboy
became a symbol of honesty, hardworking, moral men not afraid to stand up to evil. American excelptialism fit right into the cowboy idea, and the
love of the cowboy and fascination with him has affected how America looked at herself, how others saw her and even today we see the cowboy
all around us. The brutality of the civil war, followed by reconstruction was a time of disenchantment for many in America, the stories of the Wild
West and cowboy quickly became popular. American was still learning to define herself, separating from the Victorian age and coping with
corruption, America needed a hero. The lone man riding high, living a life of adventure, answering to only the call of the trail made a mighty fine
picture. The Virginian, published in 1902 started the image of the cowboy and cemented him as the romantic cowboy we think of today. Once the
dime store novels hit the press and pictures stories of Wild Bill Hickok,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Men migrating west, many were war criminals' and roughly a third were black were what made up the majority of men. Most were illiterate,
searching for work moving from one job to the next. The rumors of the thousands "mavericks", unbranded cows free for the cost of rounding them

unnecessary as well as unprofitable but impossible. Large ranches were becoming corporate and the cowboy was

The Truth about Cowboy Types
For most Americans in this age, the word "cowboy" will call to mind iconic images of a horseman wearing a wide–brimmed hat, a belt of bullets, and a
flannel shirt; he might be guiding his herd lazily along grassy plains, singing folk songs around a campfire with his companions under a starry sky,
riding off with a beautiful ranch girl into an iconic sunset backdrop, or even wearing a mask and enforcing vigilante justice in a small town terrorized
by hardened western thugs or hostile Native Americans. These clichГ©s are drawn mostly from the hundreds of movies and television productions that
claim the title "Western". This cinematic conception of the cowboy was a personification of the American spirit of rugged individualism and intrepid
pioneering but it is largely only the result of Hollywood westerns of the 20th century, and not consistent with the actual reality of cowboy life.
While there were many different types of cowboys spread across the Americas with drastically different lifestyles, mannerisms, reputations, and
backgrounds, by far the most easily recognized are the Anglo cowboys of the American West, and the Mexican vaqueros. As the eastern cattle herding
practices spread further west, and Mexican vaqueros moved north, they met in the American western frontier; "Moving further west to the semi–arid
plains, the habits and techniques of southeastern Anglo cowboys changed substantially under the influence of Mexico's vaqueros" (Slatta 18). Though

The American Cowboy
The American Cowboy The cowboys of the frontier have long captured the imagination of the American public. Americans, faced with the reality of
an increasingly industrialized society, love the image of a man living out in the wilderness fending for himself against the dangers of the unknown. By
the year 1900 there were few renegade Indians left in the country and the vast expanse of open land to the west of the Mississippi was rapidly filling
with settlers. Cowboys represented a major part of the frontier spirit and Americans were eager to keep the romanticism of the west alive. Throughout
the 20th century, western–themed movies and books have been extremely popular. The cowboys of the west, while realistically a minor part of United...

during his early life. Loving was an experienced cattle herder who supplied meat to the Confederates during the Civil War although, "the army's ability
to consume exceeded the ability to pay and by the war's end, the Confederate States of America owed Loving more than $100,000.00." (Hopkins
County) Goodnight and Loving saw each others value in the partnership and realized the potential money to be earned. With Goodnight's Indian
fighting skills and Loving's trail experience the two had great success. In 1866 they set out with two thousand cattle from Belknap, Texas to Fort
Sumner on what would later be known as the Goodnight–Loving trail. Goodnight and Loving used the trail in 1866 and 1867 but stage lines,
emigrants, and drovers made frequent use of the trail until almost 1900. Charles Goodnight ran the Ja Cattle Ranch after his herding days. The ranch
was very successful and at one point contained more than 10,000 cattle. Goodnight was a good man who cared about maintaining the beauty and life
of the frontier. In 1878 he saved four buffalo calves and by 1916 his 200 buffalo represented one tenth of the total number of buffalo in the United
States. Most of the legend surrounding Goodnight and Loving regard the unusual circumstances of Oliver Loving's death. Larry McMurty used an

Cowboys: Myth V. Reality Essay
The American Cowboy
Discuss the American cowboy in terms of myth vs. reality. How and why did this less than glamorous historical figure become transformed into our
romantic "All–American" national hero? The traditional cowboy depicted in media is noble, heroic, determined, and humble – all qualities that many
individuals would like to possess themselves. So it is no wonder that America has adopted this image of the rugged do–gooder as its national symbol.
Through these expectations the image of the cowboy and the values he holds have been shaped and molded by years of cinema into an almost
completely false assumption of what true cowboys did and how they behaved. Even popular assumptions of a cowboy's physical appearance are often ...

Cowboys did not fight in duels, kill Indians, or rescue the damsel in distress. Instead they drove cattle for thousands of miles, bribed Indians to
avoid conflict, and were often single. Cowboys were believed to be lone vigilantes who weather the tough terrain of a life on the road alone.
However in reality the task of successfully herding hundreds of cattle over thousands of miles could not have been done by a lone ranger and was
performed by groups of ten or more. Every aspect of a cowboy's job required teamwork. These fictional accounts of cowboys were caused primarily
by the romanticized portrayal of them in western literature and shows. The most famous of which is Owen Wister's novel The Virginian written in
1902. Wister's character embodied all of the selfless heroic characteristics we associate with cowboys in myth and his stories sparked the
popularization of tales of cowboys and the frontier (Brinkley 413–414). In addition, the interest in western culture and the cowboy drove the success of
Wild West shows. These shows traveled throughout the nation, as well as abroad, depicting the adventures of heroic cowboys. These shows and
novels created the glamorous image of cowboys as the rugged heroes of the west. This image stuck and has remained over generations.
This romanticized image of the cowboy has in fact overpowered the factual account of who they were. So much that many American's would be
surprised to learn that the hero they

Brokeback Mountain Comparison
The Marlboro cigarette advertisement was published in 1970. The famous short story, Brokeback Mountain, is written by Annie Proulx and was
published in 1999. The two text depict men from the American west similarly, relying on many stereotypes people have of them. There are many
stereotypes that come to mind when thinking of the American West. Usually thoughts of down–to–earth men with cowboy hats and hillbilly accents
riding horses in the meadows come to mind. At first glance at the advertisement I saw just that; two men, likely from the countryside, doing their job of
taking care of horses. The milieu is a notable element of the advertisement. The men are in a meadow which has been painted with soft but dirty
colours. A similar... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There isn't much language used in the advertisement either, it is very short and to–the–point: "Come to where the flavour is. Come to Marlboro
Country." This should also appeal to men because as the saying goes "men are creatures of view words". Looking closely at the contexts of the
advertisement we can assume the intended audience to be the same as of the novel. In both texts the main characters are working men, they even
have the the same job; taking care of animals. Working with cattle and other animals is usually thought of being a "real man's" job in the west.
Smoking cigarettes is also one of the stereotypes associated with cowboys. The advertisement uses these cultural assumptions to appeal to their,
supposed, majority audience which consists of men. A wilder side of the west is depicted in the advertisements. The cowboys are herding the wild
horses. Cowboys are seen as the epitome of masculinity and especially in the 70s every boy wanted to grow up to be one. By looking at the two
different texts the being a real man means being smoking cigarettes, running wild in nature and being able to have power over other

My Best Friends Big Day Essay
My Best Friends Big Day My best friend, Malory, and I have been best friends for twelve years. Malory was like the sister I never had. We did
absolutely everything together; you very rarely spotted one of us without the other tagging along. Sadly, in March of 2014 my best friend was
stolen from me. The thief's name was Jordan. He practically swept her off her feet and took off running with her. When you were around them
you couple almost feel the love in the room, and when they looked at each other you could see the sparkle in their eyes. On September 7th, 2015 they
were on a trip to Fort Lee Virginia. They were out eating dinner and when dessert came out it was a slice of cake and a plate with the words "Will You
Marry Me?". Of course she said yes, but that was the day I realized I was going to have to give my best friend away to her better half. I could not
believe we were planning a wedding; I could have sworn we were just two little blonde headed goofballs that swore that boys had cooties. It started to
sink in the day she picked out her wedding dress. I was unable to go with her when she picked it out, but when I received a picture of her in the dress I
cried like a baby. The dress was an off white, floor length lace gown that fit her like a glove. Not only did I cry because she looked beautiful, but
because it was one step closer to the big day. Shortly after she picked out her gown she texted me asking if I would be her maid of honor. Even though

Creative Writing: The Settlement Of Cripple Creek
The settlement of Cripple Creek came in sight as the men drove the herd of cattle through several large red sandstone monoliths. The cattle bellowed
and moved in a strait forward procession down the winding dirt road, with El Capitan, known by the Spaniards as the 'The Leader' of the great Rocky
Mountains, in view.
"There we are, Will." Eddie said above the noise of the herd. "Won't be long, now...just have to get this herd to the auction pen, and we're off for a
little fun. Good thing the boss man gives us an advance to party with."
William enjoyed the lighthearted moment when the cowboys rode high in the saddle, hats waving and calls being yelled out as they saw the auction
pens in sight. "Move 'em in! Get these doggies to market!" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The trail boss felt generous, divvying up the drovers pay with an extra bonus of gratitude. William had never known what it was like to receive pay
for any job done. The few coins in his pocket jingled to his delight as he walked with Eddie down the wooden sidewalks that rose above the rutted dirt
road in the middle of Cripple Creek.
"Can you believe it, Eddie? I actually earned money. This is more money than I've ever had. How about you? Did you get paid well enough?"
"Very well, my little friend, well enough to buy you that hat I promised..."
"Ah, you don't have to do that. I've got some coin in my pocket."
"No, this is my way of saying thank you for helping me get the cattle into the market. You did well, mi hejo."
The mercantile was filling with people from out of town. Eduardo saw several nice felt leather hats above the counter, but only one caught his eye...a
black Stetson that was small enough for his young friend's head.
"What can I help you with, sir?" The clerk asked. "I can see you're looking at the hats."

Analysis Of The Book ' The ' Of Mice And Men '
Jake slowed his stride and took a deep breath, easing the sharp burn below his ribcage. The bloodstain and the hole in his shirt reflected the bullet's
damage. It had nicked him good, but he figured he'd still fared better than Duvall. The outlaw required doctoring and he'd probably head to the nearest
town. Jake needed to warn the sheriff, but first, his obligation went to the civilian who'd trod into a gunfight he knew nothing about. For that, Jake
owed him the decency to make sure he wasn't hurt. He grimaced at the delay and closed the distance between him and the boy.
"Much obliged. Damn outlaws ambushed me."
His savior, much taller than Jake initially thought, slanted his chin upwards, his wide–brimmed hat cloaking his eyes.
Jake moved in closer. "Most people wouldn't pick sides. I'm lucky you did." He extended his hand. "Are you hurt?"
"No." The wiry boy dodged his hand and scooted back, bumping his hat brim on the tree trunk. The hat slipped off center and dropped to the ground.
What the hell? He stared at a woman's soft face. What was she doing out here? Out of duty, he'd hung back to check on the boy. Not that it mattered
one way or another. "The name's Jake Fontaine."
She swallowed and reclaimed the hat, placing it on her head. "Kat . . . Katlin Collins."
"You hit his leg. You need to work on your aim." He turned toward the trail the gunmen had taken. Now that he'd thanked her, he could get on his way.
What was he waiting for? His job was to find a murderer.

Brokeback Mountain and the Western Genre Essay
The film genre of the Western has long since proven to be more about the conflict and showdowns that occur in the storyline. Usually the western genre
incorporates traditional western motifs and icons and adheres to those common plot structures of the genre, but Brokeback Mountain is different from
what is to be normally expected because it does not seem like a traditional and conventional Western film at all. Brokeback Mountain has several
different twists to it, like the more modern take on it – traditionally, characters in Western films were riding horses, but because Brokeback Mountain is
a more modern movie, the two characters Jack and Ennis are seen traveling in cars and trucks most of the time. This alteration is very ... Show more

Brokeback Mountain, being the more homosexual romance–oriented Western that it is, subverts a large number of the typical traditional elements of
the Western film genre as a whole, this one especially, by having another male be in the position of the love interest of the hero. Although this
subversion in particular is very problematic for Jack, as it puts him in the shoes of being associated with all things relating to femininity in the
relationship. For example, Jack is the one who makes the first move when seducing Ennis, using his own allure and sexuality into tempting Ennis
when he calls him into the tent, leading Ennis down somewhat of a risky path. Ennis, however, is portrayed as somewhat of a saint, his being
repressed and restrained by social standards, saying to Jack, "You may be a sinner but I ain't yet had the opportunity". Another interesting typical thing
in the Western genre that was altered was that instead of Indians being the villain, the enemy is that of a ignorant and oppressive society–a society that
would kill Ennis and Jack for being "different", Ennis says to Jack, "this thing takes hold of us at the wrong place, wrong time and we're dead," which
shows how much they both worry about it–but the two cowboys still have to find some way to pull through and struggle to find their true selves in this
society, but it is also that fear which causes the devastating events

Have you ever wondered who the cowboys were; how they lived; or what they did? The American Cowboy's way of life was interesting and unique,
and they contributed more to society than one might think. Besides looking after stock and driving cattle, they had to round up huge numbers of cattle

calves and the lawlessness of the old west.

The attire a cowboy chose was very important to his job. Most things he wore had a definite purpose and suited the job well. ?Their usual gear
consisted of a bridle, saddle, rawhide lariat, spurs, boots, heavy leather chaps, hat, tarp, buffalo robe, and blankets? (The Cowboys). He also had a
woolen or cotton shirt, tight woolen pants and handkerchief. All of the clothing accessories were chosen for their usefulness. For example, ?A
high–crowned, broad–brimmed felt hat, the sombrero, shielded him from the sun and rain. His soft–legged boots had high heels set far under the instep
to hold his ankle clear of the heavy stirrup? (?Cowboy?). His handkerchief protected his face by shielding it from the sun and preventing dust from
entering his mouth. The tight pants were worn for a reason; they protected his legs from brush and insects (?Cowboys?). The things a cowboy wore
were essential to life and they always used these things. A cowboy?s job mainly involved the rounding up of cattle and driving the cattle to the
destinations designated by the ranch owner. The first drives were short; they went over safe routes to locations in Texas and Louisiana (Java Script).
Before moving the cattle, cowboys had to make sure that they were moving the right cattle from the herd. Cattle were branded to tell them apart from
the others. The branding was done by having an expert roper catch the cattle by the

Film Analysis Of The Film 'Easy Rider'
'Easy Rider' Analysis America in the 1960's was a time of turbulence and chaos. A nation divided in the midst of the counterculture movement that was
sparked by a generational split and fueled by the Vietnam War, America was struggling for change. The New Hollywood took these issues into account
and translated them onscreen. Films of the New Hollywood centered around the protagonist, often depicting them as an anti–hero, who suffered from
alienation and conflict within society. In the film 'Easy Rider' these themes are exemplified through its reinvention of the Western genre. Dennis
Hopper uses this film as a way to convey ideas of the Western by placing into a modern setting that embodies the feeling of 1960's America. The
Western in 'Easy Rider' is depicted primarily through the conflict between the rural and urban environments displayed onscreen. Throughout the film
the countryside and city are constantly being compared through the narrative, the cinematography, and the dialogue that is presented to the
audience. Laszlo Kovac's vivid and expansive camerawork showcases the the sprawling mountains and endless deserts that are reminiscent of the
Western Frontier. The rural territory that Wyatt and Billy occupy during their breaks is almost idyllic whether they are huddled around a campfire
or sitting in an open field, a reminder of the Western is brought to the surface. The farmer's ranch and hippie commune that is eventually seen in the
film are shown as isolated settlements, and the heart of the wilderness lies within them. Wyatt first praises the farmer for living off the land, and
says "Not every man that can live off the land, you know. You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud." He later on conveys his
belief that the commune will be able to produce crops even in the empty field that is seen. Like these people, Billy and Wyatt have rejected society
seeking out their own freedom, living as outlaws like many western heros do. When Wyatt and Billy are rejected from motels, that is symbolic of the
civilized world that they are no longer apart of, rather they must retreat to the wild to set up camp, often gathering

crucial to the company 's future. "I find American guys most self–conscious about a hat," she says. "What 's most important is that he feels

Cowboy culture is not forgotten. At the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December Stetson is also represented. Where ever there 's a major

THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE WESTERN CINEMA
THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE WESTERN CINEMA
The western movies are film genre where the scene generally takes place in North America during the American conquest of the West in the last
decades of the nineteenth century. This genre appears since the invention of the cinema in 1985 finding its inspiration from literature and painting arts
of the American Wild West. This genre reached its first success in the mid
–twentieth century during the golden age of Hollywood studios, before it had
being reinvented by European filmmakers in the 1960s.
The term Western has since been attributed to other visual arts such as literature, painting, television, cartoon, and now refers to all artistic production

In the 1880s, the Wild West was the theme of many shows such as the famous Wild West Show by Buffalo Bill. By 1900, the theme is already so
popular that it naturally became a source of inspiration for the pioneers of the film industry. In 1903, hollywood released the first Western movie "The
Great Train Robbery". It is a twenty minutes silent movie written, produced, and directed by Edwin S. Porter. This production was directly inspired by
the true story of the Wild Bunch gang also know as the Doolin–Dalton gang during the 1890s (Clapham). The Western became officially a film genre in
the 1920s.
Very quickly, the western got detached little bit from reality to gain more freedom and imagination. Hollywood now created a mythical
representation of the cowboy. This simple cowherd has become a heroic and virtuous character with impeccable and irreprochable qualities
(Clapham, p.13). The western has also built a legend around iconic figures such as Billy the Kid and Jesse James. It was inspired by events such as
the Gunfight of OK Corral, which was staged in many films. At the end of the movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", produced by John Ford in
1962, a phrase captures the essence of western: "When the legend sells better than the

Violence In The Movie : Cowboys And Aliens
The American West is one of the most fascinating times in history and was represented in many films in TV shows. The movie that I chose for
this essay was called "Cowboys & Aliens" filmed in 2011. This movie was unique because it gave both a science fiction and realistic plot. It
represented both myths and legends by showcasing Aliens which is considered futuristic while depicting the lifestyle of the average cowboy. This
movie does a great job portraying what most people would think the Midwest was like back in the day and how and what people did in their
everyday lives. In this essay I will be talking about violence in the Midwest, what character the main actor portrays and finally, I will discuss how
this movie depicts the old west and why it relates to our class discussions. The American West had both violent and nonviolent people that lived
during this time period. From what we have discussed in class the American West can be very violent like depicted in this particular science fiction
movie. Just like the American West, the average lifestyle shown was a rough and rugged life. The Cowboys seemed to be self–centered and by that I
mean they seem to fend for themselves and wonder what would benefit them. This film starts with one individual cowboy who has to fight off these

History Of The Old West
It would be almost impossible to write the history of the Old West without giving credit to the Hispanic people who influenced its customs, culture,
towns, and lives. The contributions of Hispanics to the evolution and success of America are woven into almost every portion of the nation 's history.
To visualize America untouched by Latinos is to imagine a country without much of its folklore and many of its achievements. TheUnited States has a
rich history that goes back over 200 years. Hispanics have always played vital roles in building this country and making it a better place. From the
Revolutionary War that freed the United States from England to the Persian Gulf War, Latinos have proudly served this country in the Armed Forces.
And throughout U.S. history, Latinos have prominently participated in building the West; in medicine and science; in entertainment, business,
education, civil rights, and politics; and in the great American pastime of baseball. "In Hispanic history, as in every variety of Western history, one
never has the luxury of taking point of view for granted. Hispanics –– like Indians, Anglos, and every other group –– could be victims as well as
victimizers, and the meanings of the past could be seen, at times, to be riding a seesaw" ( Limerick, 257). When the colonies on the East Coast of
what became the United States rebelled against England, Hispanics played a pivotal role. As Governor of the Louisiana Territory, General Bernardo de

The Revenant: Film Analysis
In the third video, The Revenant, mountain men are portrayed as ruthless, persevering killers. In the beginning of the clip, it shows one man being
almost mauled to death by a bear. He tries to fight back and even gets a shot off from his rifle but is still attacked. The other people in his camp find
him almost dead and one of them thinks they should just finish him off. When the half–dead man's son tells everyone not to kill him, he is choked to
death. While this is happening, his father tries to stop it, but he is too weak from the bear attack. After surviving yet another murder attempt (buried
alive), he sets out on a mission to avenge his son's death and kill the man who killed his son. The attire of the mountain men is rugged and has many ...

During Manifest Destiny, miners rushed to the West during the 1840's and 1850's when gold was first discovered on January 24, 1848, in Sutter's
Mill, California by James Marshall, a carpenter. Everybody wanted to make easy cash but did not realize how hard the journey and lifestyle was.
When the people who survived the grueling journey arrived in California, only a few actually found gold and became wealthy. In Hollywood films,
the portrayal of 49ers is mostly accurate. Yes, there are some slight differences, but the purpose of the movies are to make money and entertain
audiences. The producers try to make the movies as historically correct as they can while still keeping audiences engaged. One example of this is in a
photograph from a reenactment of the California Gold Rush (Sederquist). In the picture, there is a tent in the background. The tent is the same as it
would have been in the 1800's because it only consists of fabric with a big stick to hold it up. The miner's clothing and physical appearances are also
the same as they would have been. The two miners in the picture both have ragged hair and scraggly beards. These are both indications that they spent
most of their time in the rivers searching for gold and not looking good. Both of them are also wearing hats to keep the sun out of their face. They
both have a bandana/cloth that can be used to cover the back of the neck or any other body parts exposed to the sun. The miners did not wear anything
that didn't contribute to keeping the sun from burning them. This image shows people that miners were accurately portrayed and that most modern day

Essay about symbolism in bless the beast and children
Throughout the novel Bless the Beasts and Children, by Glendon Swarthout, symbolism is used frequently to show a weakness in a character or to
fulfill a purpose in the novel. The most apparent weaknesses in the bedwetters was their need for radios to help them sleep. The hats portrayed each
characters personality and background in some cases. Also, The Box Canyon Boys Camp is in itself a symbol representing American society in general.
The radios are the first case of symbolism shown in the novel. They are used by each and every one of the bedwetters at night to help them go to
sleep. To them it helps to imagine someone is right there with them when the radios are going. On some nights, like the one at the start of the novel

Hats were worn by all members of the bedwetters and each hat symbolized something about them. For Cotton his choice of headgear was a military
helmet that he strapped under his chin when he was about to do something dangerous or "manly". He chose this form of headgear because he was
very interested in Vietnam, which was going on at the time that this book took place. Cotton also intended on enlisting when he turned 17 with
dreams of becoming a general. The Lally brothers each had matching bulky cowboy hats, showing that the parents just got them matching everything
to save time. Shecker wore a golfing hat signed by Arnold Palmer, obviously showing his family has very important friends and no time for him. Teft
wore and Africa korps hat probably because he had dreams of being in the military as well but maybe not for the United States. Lastly, Goodenow
wore a Hopi Headband. Much like with the radios, the hats are also thrown at the buffalo by the boys. They are obviously done with the hats and no
longer want to bee thought of by them. They want to be known for being themselves and for setting all of the buffalo free from the preserve.
The Box Canyon Boys Camp is used by the author to portray the misconceptions America has about its youth. They use all physical activities like
baseball, shooting, and riding to determine the boys standing and masculinity. This happens

Magnificent Seven Satire
Western and cowboy movies are two of the oldest types of movie genres ever made. People have long had a fascination with the wild west and its
lawlessness and often like to revisit it by watching these kinds of movies. So many have been made that at times it might feel like nothing new can be
added to these stories and an attempt to do so is just revisiting old hat. The Magnificent Seven makes an attempt at not only adding to the lineage of
western movies but also retells a story of a movie considered by some to be a classic. The Magnificent Seven might not live up to the original movie
in the minds of movie critics and typical western movie fans. To the nontypical western fan that did not see the original it can still hit all the right
notes of action, slight comedy, and violence to keep their interest. Add to that fact we end up watching a truly diverse group of misfit cowboy grow
together to become heroes for a small western town. The total package is enough for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Magnificent Seven does its share to keep up that trend. Basically, the movie spends the whole time building up to the climatic and the epic
fight between Chisolm, and Bogue. The fight does not disappoint in any way, shape or form either. It can feel a tad bit too violent, but it will keep
you on the edge of your seat. Aside from the final fight scene, there are plenty of other action packed, and violent scenes to keep you interested like
appetizers before the big feast. You could include the early scene where one of Rose Creek is brutally killed by one of Bogue's henchmen with a
tomahawk. It's a scene that sets the tone for the violence that is to come. This movie isn't as much about the depth of its story as it is about action and
straddling the line of too much violence. It might be best described as one movie critic for Rolling Stone writes "It's two hours of hardcore,
shoot–em–up pow and it's entertaining as hell."

Animal Mounted Shooting Is A Event
Cowboy mounted Shooting is a timed event where competitors run a designated pattern, while shooting ten balloon targets with two .45 caliber single
action revolver guns, loaded with five rounds of blank ammunition each. Mounted shooting combines the styles of an old–time Wild West show and
skills of barrel racing, pole bending, and reigning all into one event. Any breed of horse or mule can be used in the event, according to the Cowboy
Mounted Shooting Association, some horses take easy to the event while other horses struggle with the loud environment. The temperament is a huge
factor of how well the animal compete in the show, along with the rider's determination in training the horse. A horse I believe would be good for
mounted shooting would be a small quarter horse with a short back because quarter horses are known for their laid back and quite domineer. While
short back would be useful with bending around the poles and barrels in a quick manner.
Although, traditional western style is accepted, with long sleeve western style shirt, five pocket blue jeans, chaps, western boots and cowboy hat.
Riders are encouraged to wear a period costume since, the event pays tribute to the Wild West and the late 1800s. Competitors dressed in old time
style costumes would wear a shirt without a collar, high wasted pants with buttons in place of the zipper, and an old style cowboy hat. Women that
compete in the show have the option to wear a dress or skirt that drapes over the

Opening Statement About Cowboys
Jordon Gutierrez 1/24/18 Life of cowboys Opening statement Now this goes without saying, who hasn't heard of Cowboys, we've all seen the
movies, and heard about them in history. But believe it or not there's a lot more to cowboys than grabbing their guns and shooting the bad guy at the
end then ride into the sunset. Cowboys had more interesting roles in their lives and it mostly involved cattle with their work as it was an easy market
at the time. It was hard work, but it pays off! History The most important thing is the history about cowboys. Believe it or not, they weren't called

Cowboys were mostly young men who needed cash. The average cowboy in the West made about $25–$40 a month, income like that will surely bring
out many who want to work. In addition to herding cattle, they also helped around the ranch as helping hands, treated horses, repaired fences and
buildings, worked cattle drives and in some cases helped establish frontier towns. (history.com 2010) When they were not working they lived and
relaxed on a ranch in a bunkhouse. For entertainment, some sang songs, played the guitar or harmonica and wrote poetry. (History.org 2010)
Cowboys went by many names in these times like cowpokes, buckaroos, cowhands, etc. The most experienced cowboy was called the Segundo
(Spanish for "second") and rode squarely with the trail boss. (History.com

Essay On The Magnificent Seven Movie
Perceived as the home of the U.S film industry, the ethnically diverse suburb of Hollywood has become a shorthand reference for both the industry and
people involved.
Often regarded as the birthplace of movie studios, the earliest (and seemingly most affluent) film companies to have graced Hollywood included
'Warner Brothers', 'MGM', and 'Paramount Pictures'. First cultivated by studios such as these were silent black and white films, with each major
production company developing and establishing their own dynamic film genre; for example MGM was one of the first to produce musicals and

The most important thing is a Cowboy's gear. Cowboys got most of their ideas from Mexican cowboys called Vaqueros (Vah Kair ohs). The hat

High Noon: The Characteristics Of Western Film
The characteristics of "Western" is recognizable in literary works. The specific scenario of "Western" works implies an imagery of cowboys with their
typical boots, hats, and horses, riding around their town and embarking their mission to fight against the outlaws. The cowboy symbolizes a heroic
individual going out their way to keep their environment safe. Nonetheless, this description of cowboys became the epitome figure of "Western".
However, through the years, "Western" has evolved and diversified infilm and literature. In the early 1930s, Western became a revolutionary art form.
Ultimately, as time progressed the transition from the classic cowboy transcended into the modern day "gangster". The classic "Western" originated
when filmmaking went from silent motion films into sound making films. The character of the cowboy was the hero America needed. "High Noon" a
film produced in the early 1950s defined the underlying theme of Western films of its time. In the beginning of "High Noon," the protagonist Will

Guns and Cowboys: The end of an era Many recognize the classic image of the cowboy in an old western movie: the fearless, stoic hero that stays
calm in moments of crisis. In Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses, readers witness the protagonist, John Grady Cole, attempt to revive this famous
archetype. Beginning as early as when the first pilgrims came to the new continent, Americans have always had a desire to "settle" Native American
lands. In the time that followed, the West became a sort of proving ground for the Europeans and their decedents. During the nineteenth century, the

Born in 1933, McCarthy grew up the son of a prominent lawyer as one of six children. Despite his upper–class upbringing, McCarthy dropped out of
the University of Tennessee, couldn't hold a steady job, and asked his first wife to support him while he wrote his first book, which consequently
lead to their divorce. Even after his writing earned him widespread acclaim, McCarthy still continued to live in hotels, cut his own hair, and do his

the 1970s. During an interview with The New York Times in 1992 Richard B. Woodward recorded that, "McCarthy doesn't write about places he

Descriptive Essay : Ranch Sorting
Close your eyes. Imagine, just for a second, being on the back of a horse at one o 'clock in the morning, standing in an arena, and watching the cows.
It is just you, the horse, and the cattle for this moment in time. Then, the flag is dropped, and it is time to go do what you have been training to do.
Ranch sorting is a whole other world, a huge competition. When it is your turn to ride, it is only you, your partner, the horses, and ten head of cattle

Being competitive in sorting means a lot of things: missing some school/work, late nights, early mornings, and a lot of training. It is important to
ride the horse being competed on during the week, and not just at the shows. Everything is usually a little hectic before the sorting actually starts.
People normally get there an hour beforehand, so they have time to saddle and warm up their horses, and put their rides in. Just like any other
sport, there are nice people, and there are rude people. Most of the time, people are pretty nice and will let others ride their horses if one gets hurt,
because it can be dangerous. There are a lot of variables that could go wrong: cattle, horses, or riders falling, an animal getting cut on something, even
dehydration can be an issue on hot days. Because of the heat, most people just wear t–shirts in the summer. People always wear jeans, and boots with
spurs on them. Majority of the time, there is no dress code, depending on the association. RSNC requires a button down, western style shirt, and
either a cowboy hat or no hat. Some people always wear a western shirt and cowboy hat, but it is not always necessary. Majority of the time, people
are more concerned with what is going on their horse than their own bodies. Everyone makes sure their bridles fit the horse 's head correctly, and that
they have the saddle tight enough. If the saddle is not tightened enough, it could

Persuasive Essay On Texas
"This is America. We're entitled to our opinions." "Wrong. This is Texas. And my opinion is the only want that matters" (Susan Elizabeth Phillips).
Oh, how this quote is so accurate. Texans believe that what they say is always right no matter what. You can't talk bad about a true Texans. I remember
my first day is Texas like it was just yesterday. People used to say how everything is bigger in Texas, and they weren't lying. Just the drive seemed
like it was never going to end. I remember thinking about only seeing open road and people riding on horses everywhere in cowboy boots and hats.
Too bad that wasn't true, well not the riding around on horses and everybody in cowboy boots and hats. All I saw was trees all around me and
gigantic hills that you couldn't see anything over. Although, it seemed like it was never going to end; there was some good things about my drive.
Just to see how Texas took pride in their state and the beautiful scenery. I remember when I first saw don't mess with Texas sign andthought to myself,
"Wow they are really serious." The monuments and statues of past Texans stood tall and how you can drive on the median to take pictures with the
Texas signs. So, in all it wasn't that bad.
Texans are cool, unless you're talking about their football team. Texans take pride in football like no other state. They would ride or die for them;
win or lose. Now, I'm from Louisiana and I love my city, but I grew love for Texas. I may not be native but I can see the difference between the two
states. Texas is way bigger than what I was expecting and the traffic is a killer. You'll think that it would be better because they have more highways
and more lanes, but it's not. Texans cannot drive and believe that they own the whole road with their humongous trucks. So, I had to learn how to drive
like a Texans.
Texans a truly country and they love them some country music. Their accent is like no other. When you hear aTexan talk, you must stop and think what
they mean. You begin to question your sanity when you talk to a Texans. I didn't know if I should be insulted or appreciated about what they said. You

Stagecoach Movie Film Analysis
The western movie I pick is John Ford's movie Stagecoach (1939). The movie is about a group of people traveling together by stagecoach from the
town Tonto to Lordsburg. The people traveling together are a diverse group of people. All of them have the specific motivation for going, but they
all share the same goal reaching to Lordsburg. The characters are Dallas who's a prostitute, Mrs. Lucy Mallory who is the wife of the Army Cavalry
officer, Ellsworth Henry Gatewood who is a banker, Hatfield who is a gambler, Samuel Peacock who is whiskey salesman, Doc Josiah Boone who is a
alcoholic doctor, Buck Rickabaugh who is a stage driver, Marshal Curley Wilcox who is a marshal riding shotgun, and Ringo Kid who is an escaped

The cinematography is by Bert Glennon. The expectations for this film is that it has to be western because it's the genre. The movie needs to have
action and movement. And have a heroic character. The expectations are high since a lot of people watch Western genre. I don't see any manipulation
of space and time.
The story formula for Stagecoach structures around characters in the Tonto and introducing the characters, traveling to Lordsburg, stopping at Dry
Fork way station for food and unforgettable dinner table scene, traveling towards Apache Wells in the snow, Mrs. Mallory's baby born in Apache
Wells, finally getting to Lordsburg but got attacked by the Indians, and ended with Ringo Kid in a shooting conflict. Stagecoach did a great job in the
characters types. There are the protagonists, prostitute, gambler, schoolmarm. These are the specific character types in Western movies. The setting of
the movie is on point. It's in the American West and takes place in the 1880s. The location of Monument Valley is a favorite location forJohn Ford. The
presentation of Stagecoach has many great exterior shots that collocate the characters with the environment they occupy. The stars in Stagecoach does
fit in a Western movie. Like John Wayne, he stars in many Western movies. What makes Stagecoach a western is the traditional western theme. Like
the fight between whites and Native Americans. There is a good use of the American West's open plains and mountains.

Essay about The Myth of the Old West
Over the years, the idea of the western frontier of American history has been unjustly and falsely romanticized by the movie, novel, and television
industries. People now believe the west to have been populated by gun–slinging cowboys wearing ten gallon hats who rode off on capricious, idealistic
adventures. Not only is this perception of the west far from the truth, but no mention of the atrocities of Indian massacre, avarice, and ill–advised, often
deceptive, government programs is even present in the average citizen's understanding of the frontier. This misunderstanding of the west is epitomized

The origins of the ranging business as we know it began in 1848, when Texas cattle drovers began to herd their livestock north towards Missouri,
where the drovers would sell them to make a profit. (Terrell 187). According to a Dallas newspaper in 1850, "[The cattle] are to be sold for beef , or
to furnish teams for California emigrants" (Terrell 187). Major markets for cattle in the North during this time period included Independence and
Kansas City, Missouri. Although the cattle ranging which was occurring in the west during the mid–eighteen hundreds was known by the government
to be taking place, a large part of the business was, in fact, illegal. In fact, John Upton Terrell declares that cattle herders', "historical significance is
not to be found in beneficial contributions to the nation welfare, for they made none. Quite to the contrary, they are worthy of note for the political
corruption they engendered" (Terrell 181) This stems originally from the disease which the cattle carried with them, which the state of Missouri
suffered from as a result of the cattle drives. Thus, Missouri attempted to regulate the flow of livestock into its borders by passing legislation. This
"cattle act" which was enacted in 1855, could not be reasonably enforced and therefore failed. The reason that it could not be enforced was because the
cattle herders often bribed the justices of the peace, who were given the authority to impound

American Cowboy Research Paper

  • 1. American Cowboy Research Paper The American cowboy's heyday only lasted about twenty years, from 1880–1900. The men that were called "cowboy" were mostly just work hands moving from place to place looking for work. The Real cowboys were nothing much like what we envision them today or how Hollywood has portrayed them, but that does not really matter, the Idea of the cowboy and his code has shaped America in many different ways. The Cowboy became a symbol of honesty, hardworking, moral men not afraid to stand up to evil. American excelptialism fit right into the cowboy idea, and the love of the cowboy and fascination with him has affected how America looked at herself, how others saw her and even today we see the cowboy all around us. The brutality of the civil war, followed by reconstruction was a time of disenchantment for many in America, the stories of the Wild West and cowboy quickly became popular. American was still learning to define herself, separating from the Victorian age and coping with corruption, America needed a hero. The lone man riding high, living a life of adventure, answering to only the call of the trail made a mighty fine picture. The Virginian, published in 1902 started the image of the cowboy and cemented him as the romantic cowboy we think of today. Once the dime store novels hit the press and pictures stories of Wild Bill Hickok,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Men migrating west, many were war criminals' and roughly a third were black were what made up the majority of men. Most were illiterate, searching for work moving from one job to the next. The rumors of the thousands "mavericks", unbranded cows free for the cost of rounding them up, drove many to come west. By the 1900's the range was closing up, barbed wire fences and the railroad was making the long cattle drives not only unnecessary as well as unprofitable but impossible. Large ranches were becoming corporate and the cowboy was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Fallacies In Sandra Steingraber's When Cowboys Cry Fallacies The Wild West was a period of lawlessness of the untamed territories west of the Mississippi River in the mid to late 1800's. Where it was filled with gangs, shootouts, native Indians, and most of all cowboys. In Sandra Steingraber's When Cowboys Cry she is making comparison to the ranchers of Montana to cowboys, while comparing their situation to the Wild West. The ranchers in Montana are concerned about the hydrofracking that is going on, and that it's damaging the environment all over the world. Hydrofracking is a method of pumping chemical–laced water into the ground causing natural gas and oil to rise below groundwater reservoir level. Which is causing springs to stop flowing and contaminating water sources with the chemicals... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. The Truth about Cowboy Types For most Americans in this age, the word "cowboy" will call to mind iconic images of a horseman wearing a wide–brimmed hat, a belt of bullets, and a flannel shirt; he might be guiding his herd lazily along grassy plains, singing folk songs around a campfire with his companions under a starry sky, riding off with a beautiful ranch girl into an iconic sunset backdrop, or even wearing a mask and enforcing vigilante justice in a small town terrorized by hardened western thugs or hostile Native Americans. These clichГ©s are drawn mostly from the hundreds of movies and television productions that claim the title "Western". This cinematic conception of the cowboy was a personification of the American spirit of rugged individualism and intrepid pioneering but it is largely only the result of Hollywood westerns of the 20th century, and not consistent with the actual reality of cowboy life. While there were many different types of cowboys spread across the Americas with drastically different lifestyles, mannerisms, reputations, and backgrounds, by far the most easily recognized are the Anglo cowboys of the American West, and the Mexican vaqueros. As the eastern cattle herding practices spread further west, and Mexican vaqueros moved north, they met in the American western frontier; "Moving further west to the semi–arid plains, the habits and techniques of southeastern Anglo cowboys changed substantially under the influence of Mexico's vaqueros" (Slatta 18). • 4. The American Cowboy The American Cowboy The cowboys of the frontier have long captured the imagination of the American public. Americans, faced with the reality of an increasingly industrialized society, love the image of a man living out in the wilderness fending for himself against the dangers of the unknown. By the year 1900 there were few renegade Indians left in the country and the vast expanse of open land to the west of the Mississippi was rapidly filling with settlers. Cowboys represented a major part of the frontier spirit and Americans were eager to keep the romanticism of the west alive. Throughout the 20th century, western–themed movies and books have been extremely popular. The cowboys of the west, while realistically a minor part of United... Oliver Loving was a Kentuckian who also found his way to Texas during his early life. Loving was an experienced cattle herder who supplied meat to the Confederates during the Civil War although, "the army's ability to consume exceeded the ability to pay and by the war's end, the Confederate States of America owed Loving more than $100,000.00." (Hopkins County) Goodnight and Loving saw each others value in the partnership and realized the potential money to be earned. With Goodnight's Indian fighting skills and Loving's trail experience the two had great success. In 1866 they set out with two thousand cattle from Belknap, Texas to Fort Sumner on what would later be known as the Goodnight–Loving trail. Goodnight and Loving used the trail in 1866 and 1867 but stage lines, emigrants, and drovers made frequent use of the trail until almost 1900. Charles Goodnight ran the Ja Cattle Ranch after his herding days. The ranch was very successful and at one point contained more than 10,000 cattle. Goodnight was a good man who cared about maintaining the beauty and life of the frontier. In 1878 he saved four buffalo calves and by 1916 his 200 buffalo represented one tenth of the total number of buffalo in the United States. Most of the legend surrounding Goodnight and Loving regard the unusual circumstances of Oliver Loving's death. Larry McMurty used an identical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Cowboys: Myth V. Reality Essay The American Cowboy Discuss the American cowboy in terms of myth vs. reality. How and why did this less than glamorous historical figure become transformed into our romantic "All–American" national hero? The traditional cowboy depicted in media is noble, heroic, determined, and humble – all qualities that many individuals would like to possess themselves. So it is no wonder that America has adopted this image of the rugged do–gooder as its national symbol. Through these expectations the image of the cowboy and the values he holds have been shaped and molded by years of cinema into an almost completely false assumption of what true cowboys did and how they behaved. Even popular assumptions of a cowboy's physical appearance are often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cowboys did not fight in duels, kill Indians, or rescue the damsel in distress. Instead they drove cattle for thousands of miles, bribed Indians to avoid conflict, and were often single. Cowboys were believed to be lone vigilantes who weather the tough terrain of a life on the road alone. However in reality the task of successfully herding hundreds of cattle over thousands of miles could not have been done by a lone ranger and was performed by groups of ten or more. Every aspect of a cowboy's job required teamwork. These fictional accounts of cowboys were caused primarily by the romanticized portrayal of them in western literature and shows. The most famous of which is Owen Wister's novel The Virginian written in 1902. Wister's character embodied all of the selfless heroic characteristics we associate with cowboys in myth and his stories sparked the popularization of tales of cowboys and the frontier (Brinkley 413–414). In addition, the interest in western culture and the cowboy drove the success of Wild West shows. These shows traveled throughout the nation, as well as abroad, depicting the adventures of heroic cowboys. These shows and novels created the glamorous image of cowboys as the rugged heroes of the west. This image stuck and has remained over generations. This romanticized image of the cowboy has in fact overpowered the factual account of who they were. So much that many American's would be surprised to learn that the hero they ... • 7. Brokeback Mountain Comparison The Marlboro cigarette advertisement was published in 1970. The famous short story, Brokeback Mountain, is written by Annie Proulx and was published in 1999. The two text depict men from the American west similarly, relying on many stereotypes people have of them. There are many stereotypes that come to mind when thinking of the American West. Usually thoughts of down–to–earth men with cowboy hats and hillbilly accents riding horses in the meadows come to mind. At first glance at the advertisement I saw just that; two men, likely from the countryside, doing their job of taking care of horses. The milieu is a notable element of the advertisement. The men are in a meadow which has been painted with soft but dirty colours. A similar... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There isn't much language used in the advertisement either, it is very short and to–the–point: "Come to where the flavour is. Come to Marlboro Country." This should also appeal to men because as the saying goes "men are creatures of view words". Looking closely at the contexts of the advertisement we can assume the intended audience to be the same as of the novel. In both texts the main characters are working men, they even have the the same job; taking care of animals. Working with cattle and other animals is usually thought of being a "real man's" job in the west. Smoking cigarettes is also one of the stereotypes associated with cowboys. The advertisement uses these cultural assumptions to appeal to their, supposed, majority audience which consists of men. A wilder side of the west is depicted in the advertisements. The cowboys are herding the wild horses. Cowboys are seen as the epitome of masculinity and especially in the 70s every boy wanted to grow up to be one. • 8. My Best Friends Big Day Essay My Best Friends Big Day My best friend, Malory, and I have been best friends for twelve years. Malory was like the sister I never had. We did absolutely everything together; you very rarely spotted one of us without the other tagging along. Sadly, in March of 2014 my best friend was stolen from me. The thief's name was Jordan. He practically swept her off her feet and took off running with her. When you were around them you couple almost feel the love in the room, and when they looked at each other you could see the sparkle in their eyes. On September 7th, 2015 they were on a trip to Fort Lee Virginia. They were out eating dinner and when dessert came out it was a slice of cake and a plate with the words "Will You Marry Me?". Of course she said yes, but that was the day I realized I was going to have to give my best friend away to her better half. I could not believe we were planning a wedding; I could have sworn we were just two little blonde headed goofballs that swore that boys had cooties. It started to sink in the day she picked out her wedding dress. I was unable to go with her when she picked it out, but when I received a picture of her in the dress I cried like a baby. The dress was an off white, floor length lace gown that fit her like a glove. Not only did I cry because she looked beautiful, but because it was one step closer to the big day. Shortly after she picked out her gown she texted me asking if I would be her maid of honor. Even though I pretty much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The cattle bellowed and moved in a strait forward procession down the winding dirt road, with El Capitan, known by the Spaniards as the 'The Leader' of the great Rocky Mountains, in view. "There we are, Will." Eddie said above the noise of the herd. "Won't be long, now...just have to get this herd to the auction pen, and we're off for a little fun. The bloodstain and the hole in his shirt reflected the bullet's damage. It had nicked him good, but he figured he'd still fared better than Duvall. The outlaw required doctoring and he'd probably head to the nearest town. Jake needed to warn the sheriff, but first, his obligation went to the civilian who'd trod into a gunfight he knew nothing about. For that, Jake owed him the decency to make sure he wasn't hurt. He grimaced at the delay and closed the distance between him and the boy. "Much obliged. Damn outlaws ambushed me." His savior, much taller than Jake initially thought, slanted his chin upwards, his wide–brimmed hat cloaking his eyes. Jake moved in closer. "Most people wouldn't pick sides. I'm lucky you did." He extended his hand. "Are you hurt?" "No." The wiry boy dodged his hand and scooted back, bumping his hat brim on the tree trunk. The hat slipped off center and dropped to the ground. What the hell? He stared at a woman's soft face. What was she doing out here? Out of duty, he'd hung back to check on the boy. Not that it mattered one way or another. "The name's Jake Fontaine." She swallowed and reclaimed the hat, placing it on her head. "Kat . . . Katlin Collins." "You hit his leg. You need to work on your aim." He turned toward the trail the gunmen had taken. • 12. Brokeback Mountain and the Western Genre Essay The film genre of the Western has long since proven to be more about the conflict and showdowns that occur in the storyline. Usually the western genre incorporates traditional western motifs and icons and adheres to those common plot structures of the genre, but Brokeback Mountain is different from what is to be normally expected because it does not seem like a traditional and conventional Western film at all. Brokeback Mountain has several different twists to it, like the more modern take on it – traditionally, characters in Western films were riding horses, but because Brokeback Mountain is a more modern movie, the two characters Jack and Ennis are seen traveling in cars and trucks most of the time. This alteration is very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brokeback Mountain, being the more homosexual romance–oriented Western that it is, subverts a large number of the typical traditional elements of the Western film genre as a whole, this one especially, by having another male be in the position of the love interest of the hero. Although this subversion in particular is very problematic for Jack, as it puts him in the shoes of being associated with all things relating to femininity in the relationship. For example, Jack is the one who makes the first move when seducing Ennis, using his own allure and sexuality into tempting Ennis when he calls him into the tent, leading Ennis down somewhat of a risky path. Ennis, however, is portrayed as somewhat of a saint, his being repressed and restrained by social standards, saying to Jack, "You may be a sinner but I ain't yet had the opportunity". Another interesting typical thing in the Western genre that was altered was that instead of Indians being the villain, the enemy is that of a ignorant and oppressive society–a society that would kill Ennis and Jack for being "different", Ennis says to Jack, "this thing takes hold of us at the wrong place, wrong time and we're dead," which shows how much they both worry about it–but the two cowboys still have to find some way to pull through and struggle to find their true selves in this society, but it is also that fear which causes the devastating events ... • 15. Film Analysis Of The Film 'Easy Rider' 'Easy Rider' Analysis America in the 1960's was a time of turbulence and chaos. A nation divided in the midst of the counterculture movement that was sparked by a generational split and fueled by the Vietnam War, America was struggling for change. The New Hollywood took these issues into account and translated them onscreen. Films of the New Hollywood centered around the protagonist, often depicting them as an anti–hero, who suffered from alienation and conflict within society. In the film 'Easy Rider' these themes are exemplified through its reinvention of the Western genre. Dennis Hopper uses this film as a way to convey ideas of the Western by placing into a modern setting that embodies the feeling of 1960's America. The Western in 'Easy Rider' is depicted primarily through the conflict between the rural and urban environments displayed onscreen. Throughout the film the countryside and city are constantly being compared through the narrative, the cinematography, and the dialogue that is presented to the audience. Laszlo Kovac's vivid and expansive camerawork showcases the the sprawling mountains and endless deserts that are reminiscent of the Western Frontier. The rural territory that Wyatt and Billy occupy during their breaks is almost idyllic whether they are huddled around a campfire or sitting in an open field, a reminder of the Western is brought to the surface. The farmer's ranch and hippie commune that is eventually seen in the film are shown as isolated settlements, and the heart of the wilderness lies within them. Wyatt first praises the farmer for living off the land, and says "Not every man that can live off the land, you know. You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud." He later on conveys his belief that the commune will be able to produce crops even in the empty field that is seen. Like these people, Billy and Wyatt have rejected society seeking out their own freedom, living as outlaws like many western heros do. When Wyatt and Billy are rejected from motels, that is symbolic of the civilized world that they are no longer apart of, rather they must retreat to the wild to set up camp, often gathering ... In 1903, hollywood released the first Western movie "The Great Train Robbery". It is a twenty minutes silent movie written, produced, and directed by Edwin S. Porter. This production was directly inspired by the true story of the Wild Bunch gang also know as the Doolin–Dalton gang during the 1890s (Clapham). The Western became officially a film genre in the 1920s. Very quickly, the western got detached little bit from reality to gain more freedom and imagination. Hollywood now created a mythical representation of the cowboy. This simple cowherd has become a heroic and virtuous character with impeccable and irreprochable qualities (Clapham, p.13). The western has also built a legend around iconic figures such as Billy the Kid and Jesse James. It was inspired by events such as the Gunfight of OK Corral, which was staged in many films. Not that anybody can see the darkened sinister gateway at the base of an ancient tree, with its glowing edges. "Who left this open!" the caretaker yells. "This is happening way too often and I'm getting sick of it," he said as he closes the door in frustration. The glowing light blinks out in the shadow of the grotto in the park, made up of hundreds of tree branches forming a makeshift cave. His outfit was purchased at the thrift store down the street, except for the pistols, holster, and the hat; those belonged to his grandfather. They were all that was left behind when his grandpa disappeared last year. It wasn't until months later when Hunter noticed the tiny piece of paper stuck in the hat band. It was just a torn blank corner of a larger piece with numbers hand written on it in his grandpa's handwriting; that confused him to no end. He asked his parents about it, but they had no idea what it meant. If wasn't until a few weeks ago, when it occurred to him that they might be GPS coordinates. He turned back to the park. • 35. All The Pretty Horses Research Paper Guns and Cowboys: The end of an era Many recognize the classic image of the cowboy in an old western movie: the fearless, stoic hero that stays calm in moments of crisis. In Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses, readers witness the protagonist, John Grady Cole, attempt to revive this famous archetype. Beginning as early as when the first pilgrims came to the new continent, Americans have always had a desire to "settle" Native American lands. In the time that followed, the West became a sort of proving ground for the Europeans and their decedents. During the nineteenth century, the image of land being settled by men on horses, who literally took the law into their own hands through their shotguns, became pervasive in the American mind. By... Despite his upper–class upbringing, McCarthy dropped out of the University of Tennessee, couldn't hold a steady job, and asked his first wife to support him while he wrote his first book, which consequently lead to their divorce. Even after his writing earned him widespread acclaim, McCarthy still continued to live in hotels, cut his own hair, and do his laundry at a Laundromat. After living in Spain where he became fluent in the language, McCarthy moved to the Southwest where he has lived since the 1970s. During an interview with The New York Times in 1992 Richard B. Woodward recorded that, "McCarthy doesn't write about places he hasn't visited, and he has made dozens of similar scouting forays to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and across the Rio Grande into Chihuahua, Sonora and Coahuila. The vast blankness of the Southwest desert served as a metaphor for the nihilistic violence in his last novel, "Blood Meridian," published in 1985. And this unpopulated, scuffed–up terrain again dominates the background in "All the Pretty Horses," which will appear next month from Knopf" (Woodward). Other prominent works by McCarthy include Suttree (1979), Blood Meridian (1985), No Country for Old Men (2005), The Road (2006), and The Sunset Limited (2006): all of which take place in the American West. ... • 36. Descriptive Essay : Ranch Sorting Close your eyes. When it is your turn to ride, it is only you, your partner, the horses, and ten head of cattle numbered 1–0. The pen is a 60' round pen, shaped like a figure 8 with a 12' hole in the middle (Ranch Sorting Rules 1). On one end, the cattle are standing with numbers on their backs. It is important to ride the horse being competed on during the week, and not just at the shows. Everything is usually a little hectic before the sorting actually starts. People normally get there an hour beforehand, so they have time to saddle and warm up their horses, and put their rides in. Just like any other sport, there are nice people, and there are rude people. Most of the time, people are pretty nice and will let others ride their horses if one gets hurt, because it can be dangerous. There are a lot of variables that could go wrong: cattle, horses, or riders falling, an animal getting cut on something, even dehydration can be an issue on hot days. Because of the heat, most people just wear t–shirts in the summer. People always wear jeans, and boots with spurs on them. Majority of the time, there is no dress code, depending on the association. RSNC requires a button down, western style shirt, and either a cowboy hat or no hat. Some people always wear a western shirt and cowboy hat, but it is not always necessary. • 37. Persuasive Essay On Texas "This is America. We're entitled to our opinions." "Wrong. This is Texas. And my opinion is the only want that matters" (Susan Elizabeth Phillips). Oh, how this quote is so accurate. Texans believe that what they say is always right no matter what. You can't talk bad about a true Texans. I remember my first day is Texas like it was just yesterday. People used to say how everything is bigger in Texas, and they weren't lying. Just the drive seemed like it was never going to end. I remember thinking about only seeing open road and people riding on horses everywhere in cowboy boots and hats. Too bad that wasn't true, well not the riding around on horses and everybody in cowboy boots and hats. All I saw was trees all around me and gigantic hills that you couldn't see anything over. Although, it seemed like it was never going to end; there was some good things about my drive. Just to see how Texas took pride in their state and the beautiful scenery. I remember when I first saw don't mess with Texas sign andthought to myself, "Wow they are really serious." The monuments and statues of past Texans stood tall and how you can drive on the median to take pictures with the Texas signs. So, in all it wasn't that bad. Texans are cool, unless you're talking about their football team. Texans take pride in football like no other state. They would ride or die for them; win or lose. Now, I'm from Louisiana and I love my city, but I grew love for Texas. I may not be native but I can see the difference between the two states. Texas is way bigger than what I was expecting and the traffic is a killer. You'll think that it would be better because they have more highways and more lanes, but it's not. Texans cannot drive and believe that they own the whole road with their humongous trucks. So, I had to learn how to drive like a Texans. Texans a truly country and they love them some country music. Their accent is like no other. When you hear aTexan talk, you must stop and think what they mean. You begin to question your sanity when you talk to a Texans. I didn't know if I should be insulted or appreciated about what they said. You begin to understand them after being down here after some time, but that's what most people say about ... The movie is about a group of people traveling together by stagecoach from the town Tonto to Lordsburg. The people traveling together are a diverse group of people. All of them have the specific motivation for going, but they all share the same goal reaching to Lordsburg. The characters are Dallas who's a prostitute, Mrs. Lucy Mallory who is the wife of the Army Cavalry officer, Ellsworth Henry Gatewood who is a banker, Hatfield who is a gambler, Samuel Peacock who is whiskey salesman, Doc Josiah Boone who is a alcoholic doctor, Buck Rickabaugh who is a stage driver, Marshal Curley Wilcox who is a marshal riding shotgun, and Ringo Kid who is an escaped outlaw. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cinematography is by Bert Glennon. The expectations for this film is that it has to be western because it's the genre. The movie needs to have action and movement. And have a heroic character. The expectations are high since a lot of people watch Western genre. I don't see any manipulation of space and time. The story formula for Stagecoach structures around characters in the Tonto and introducing the characters, traveling to Lordsburg, stopping at Dry Fork way station for food and unforgettable dinner table scene, traveling towards Apache Wells in the snow, Mrs. Mallory's baby born in Apache Wells, finally getting to Lordsburg but got attacked by the Indians, and ended with Ringo Kid in a shooting conflict. Stagecoach did a great job in the characters types. There are the protagonists, prostitute, gambler, schoolmarm. These are the specific character types in Western movies. The setting of the movie is on point. It's in the American West and takes place in the 1880s. The location of Monument Valley is a favorite location forJohn Ford. The presentation of Stagecoach has many great exterior shots that collocate the characters with the environment they occupy. The stars in Stagecoach does fit in a Western movie. Like John Wayne, he stars in many Western movies. What makes Stagecoach a western is the traditional western theme. Like the fight between whites and Native Americans. There is a good use of the American West's open plains and mountains. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Essay about The Myth of the Old West Over the years, the idea of the western frontier of American history has been unjustly and falsely romanticized by the movie, novel, and television industries. People now believe the west to have been populated by gun–slinging cowboys wearing ten gallon hats who rode off on capricious, idealistic adventures. Not only is this perception of the west far from the truth, but no mention of the atrocities of Indian massacre, avarice, and ill–advised, often deceptive, government programs is even present in the average citizen's understanding of the frontier. This misunderstanding of the west is epitomized by the statement, "Frederick Jackson Turner's frontier thesis was as real as the myth of the west. The development of the west was, in... The origins of the ranging business as we know it began in 1848, when Texas cattle drovers began to herd their livestock north towards Missouri, where the drovers would sell them to make a profit. (Terrell 187). According to a Dallas newspaper in 1850, "[The cattle] are to be sold for beef , or to furnish teams for California emigrants" (Terrell 187). Major markets for cattle in the North during this time period included Independence and Kansas City, Missouri. Although the cattle ranging which was occurring in the west during the mid–eighteen hundreds was known by the government to be taking place, a large part of the business was, in fact, illegal. In fact, John Upton Terrell declares that cattle herders', "historical significance is not to be found in beneficial contributions to the nation welfare, for they made none. Quite to the contrary, they are worthy of note for the political corruption they engendered" (Terrell 181) This stems originally from the disease which the cattle carried with them, which the state of Missouri suffered from as a result of the cattle drives. Thus, Missouri attempted to regulate the flow of livestock into its borders by passing legislation. This "cattle act" which was enacted in 1855, could not be reasonably enforced and therefore failed. The reason that it could not be enforced was because the cattle herders often bribed the justices of the peace, who were given the authority to impound ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a movie that shows the struggles that Temple Grandin overcomes to produces one of the nation's best slaughterhouse designs, become an autism advocate, motivational speaker, and award winning author. The 2010 film shows the physiological cognitive theory throughout it all. The first time we see the cognitive perspective is when Temple Grandin she sees the man dressed like a cowboy. The cognitive theory helps explain mental processes such as processing information, learning, or thinking. Temple Grandin saw the way the man dressed the belt, cowboy boots, cowboy hat, and the shirt. She processed the information and with it and previous information she knew from pictures, shows, magazines, and other medias she assumed he was a bad guy. She saw that the they carry guns, shoot each other, and rob stores. Because of the unconventional way of processing information. She sees in pictures and relate it to other things she saw in the media. So the bad guys on television looking like the cowboy in front of her threatened her. The second time we saw this approach was in the wallpaper. The movie flashed back to young Temple age four, not speaking before this point.
