This document outlines instructions for a service-learning assignment in an Africana Studies course. Students are asked to volunteer for at least 3 hours at an organization with a mission related to justice, diversity, or social equity. They then write a summary paper reflecting on how the volunteer experience related to key concepts in Africana Studies like social concerns, ethics of sharing, and connecting campus to community. For honors credit, students analyze how their chosen career field could address larger goals like community development or societal injustices. As an example, the author volunteered at their job - a juvenile detention center in Washington, DC - helping with enrichment programs for youth who are 99% African American. concepts and founding principles.Identify an Africana related not-for-profit organization or
initiative which has a clearly stated mission related to justice, diversity or social equity, or a
and which has a need for volunteers. Volunteer at least 3 hours of “community service” to
said organization. For example, if Central State University is selected, focus on CSU’s mission
statement and compelling priorities as an HBCU. You may choose to volunteer with a
project or initiative which explicitly connects CSU to an external community (i.e., the city of
Dayton, or the CSU Alumni chapter in your city). Volunteer service might include approved
social media promotion of the organization itself or an event/program sponsored by the
organization. You may volunteer at an organization of which you a member, or even where
you work, if appropriate. After the volunteer engagement, write a summary paper focused
on insights gained from the service learning experience, relative to Africana Studies
“relevance” and “ethics of sharing” and its founding goal to “connect campus to
community.”Upload/attach your service learning report paper, which should have the
following structural features: unique title, introduction, body, conclusion and
reference/works cited page.Summary paper might answer the following questions: What
was your initial impression of this service-learning assignment; which organizations did
you consider before making a final decision; where is the organization located and what is
its stated mission; while volunteering, did you gain a better view the organization’s mission;
what service did you provide, why, what amount of time, and how useful do your think it
was; what information or insights about the organization did you gain; in your assessment,
how does the organization’s mission relate, if at all, to such Africana Studies imperative and
concerns about “relevance,” “social concerns,” “ethic of sharing,” etc.as you understand
them. What, if any, value did volunteer in this manner held for you?Do attach relevant
documentation such as communications with the service site and/or work product created
as part of your service.In-class Honors Credit (90 points or higher, required and registration
with CSU Honors College)Focus your Service-Learning Midterm assignment project report
on an organization that is within your future career, adding a detailed analysis of ways the
organization’s professional goals address, or could address, a larger mission such as
“community development,” “human advancement” or “societal injustices/inequity”?Focus
2. your Final Analysis Assignment on conducting research which extends your Service-
Learning midterm report by further exploring, detailing, and assessing how your chosen
career field, or your personal participation in same, can be shaped by Africana Studies
imperatives. At least 90 points on both midterm report and final paper, required. I
volunteere at my job during my days off. I work at DYRS in Washington DC, which is a
juvenile detention center. I volunteered with enrichment programs (you could make uo
any) most of the population there is 99% African American. What I learned is that our
African American youth really need guidance (if you could help me word that better please.)
They need preventive programs that would step in before our youth see that crime is the
answer. (if you could help me word that better) and cite some youth programs you feel
would help solve the crime rate in Washington DC.I volunteered 1 hr a day for 4 days at my
job, nonpaid. I worked on the male and female unit.Feel free to add what else you feel is
needed and ask ne any questions
