1. English Civil War: (1642–1649) The English Civil War was a conflict over parliamentary rights
caused by King Charles I's avoidance to checks of his power. King Charles I ruled without
summoning parliament for 11 years by acquiring funds through "loans" from wealthy subjects and
applying existing taxes more broadly. When he finally summoned parliament in 1640 to raise taxes
for an army he arrested those in parliament that opposed him and thus set off the English Civil War.
The English Bill of Rights of 1689 was created as a result during the Glorious Revolution of 1688;
this requires the king to call parliament frequently to consent changes in laws or raise an army in
times of peace. In the end, the English Civil War checked the growth of royal absolutism and
certified that England would be a constitutional monarchy. 2. Holy Roman Empire: The Holy
Roman Empire was comprised of mostly German states and lasted from 962 to 1806. It was led by
an Emperor who was elected by the princes. The Holy Roman Empire stopped the Ottoman at the
gates of Vienna and several attacks after. 3. Encomienda: Encomienda was an exploitation of labor.
Spanish were granted rights to Amerindians, essentially making them slaves. Amerindians were
forced to provide labor and goods to keep their land and in return the Spanish gave them protection
and taught them Christianity. A combination of abuse and disease led to a huge decline in
Amerindians, forcing Europeans to look elsewhere for labor.

As long as humanity has differentiated view points, there will be the need for argument. Whether the
argument is about who will be the next leader of a free country or as simple as whether or not you

keep their train of thought going while constantly countering what the opposition is saying; but with
argumentative writing one can freely express all their ideas without opposition until a person is

like a dance. To explain, when you see another person at a club or an event that you think is cute,
you have to engage them in an icebreaking conversation. Then when the house band or DJ starts
playing you ask the person to dance. While dancing you have to keep up with the beat and keep your

outweigh the negatives in medical and scientific settings. Due to the knowledge of this, continued
funding and support is critical for the advancement of these therapies and science as a whole.

cord injury, heart disease, parkinson 's disease, alzheimer 's and Lou Gehrig 's disease, more
commonly known as ALS. Funding via the government was passed into law in 2008 by President

Single Stories are Problematic
In the world we live in now it has become easy to stereotype and create a single story about certain
people and situations, whether it's intentional or not. In 2009, a Nigerian novelist named
Chimamanda Adichie gave an amazing TED talk called "The Danger of the Single Story". A single
story more or less means an incomplete or inaccurate viewpoint of a person or culture based on a
story created from a single experience. When one hears the same story over and over again, we start
believing only that story. Adichie claims that creating single stories is problematic and rely on
power, a single story I decided to present is how people believe police officers are abusing their
power, and I believe the media is at fault. For one to truly understand a story we must listen to the
root of the story. Her speech made me realize and view things differently. In the "The Danger of a
Single Story", Chimamanda Adicie tells her own personal experiences of a single story and how that
can become challenging. She talks about when she started reading and writing at a young age. She
read British and American children 's books. When she started writing all her characters were white

The Black death was a tragic epidemic that affected much of Europe and Asia in the 14th century.
Ships that were infested with rats and fleas would travel all over different countries for trade. The
rodents would carry a certain bacteria called "Yersinia Pestis". Fleas bit rats and then carried the
bacteria in their system. They would then feed on humans and that was how the Black Death was
created and spread. People that got bitten had a variety of lethal symptoms such as fever, weakness,
abdominal pain, chills, shock, and eventually death. It was named the Black Death due to the fact
that bleeding of tissues caused people to have dark patches all over their skin. Many people believed
this was God's way of punishing them for committing sins. 75–200 million people died because of

Roughly between the times of the 14th and 17th centuries a cultural movement called the
Renaissance existed. The Renaissance housed some of the greatest intellects, such as Leonardo da
Vinci, and a radically different way of thinking emerged. Humanism developed largely and rapidly
among this time, and was greatly influenced by a man named Desiderius Erasmus (1466–1536).
Erasmus, a Dutchman, originally lived among monasteries where he developed many opposing
views during his years of service. In the midst of the Renaissance, around the 16th century, the
Reformation movement began to splinter the faiths of Europe. Some say that Erasmus bridged the
ideals of the Renaissance and Reformation movements. Among his many contributions to the
humanist drive, he wrote many colloquies originally intended for teaching Latin to school children,
which doubled as underlying preaching of Erasmus's ideals. A collection of a variety of these stories
entitled the "Ten Colloquies" written by Erasmus shows specific examples of the tethering of

German Catholic priest himself, Luther was not afraid to condemn the Catholic Church, even
publicly, which is how he displayed the original copy of the theses. Luther's issue with the church
wasn't personal but was instead based on what he saw as violation of the religious morals and
teachings of God. For example, he highly disapproved the church's several claims of salvation and

The Movies Badlands ( 1973 ) And Days Of Heaven
The movies Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978) are both directed by the acclaimed movie
maker Terrence Malick. Both of these films have been deemed culturally significant by the Library
of Congress and have been inducted in 1993 and 2007 respectively. The basis of this paper is to take
these two movies and shed some light behind their creator's process. The justification for this
analysis is to prove with examples that Terrence Malick is an example of an auteur. Through the use
of mise en scene, sound, and editing it can be seen that the two films in question are decidedly of a
certain style that is unique to Terrence. Beginning with the mise en scene components incorporated
in Badlands, it is shown throughout that Terrence Malick really enjoys nice natural light for the
majority of his shots. Of course this goes hand in hand with the majority of the film taking place
either outdoors, or inside of a car. Whether it be inside or out the sun does most of the job in that
department. Now, dissecting the components behind the wardrobes, Kit's denim jacket and jeans
really define him. The reason why Terrence made that choice for what he wore is obvious. The outfit
is extremely symbolic of the location where the film takes place. Kit himself even says at one point
that he has the leather boots to appear like more of a cowboy. Being located in the Midwest at the

As a young student previous to this year I have not had much experience studying Martin Luther the
reformer. However, I found this book to be very helpful to study the history of Luther. The author
James M. Kittleson states on page fourteen "The primary purpose of this book is to tell the story of
Martin Luther to readers who are not specialists in the field of Luther studies and who have no
desire to become ensnared in the arguments of specialists." That is exactly what the book does, it felt
as if it was directed at a student such as myself, who has little to no knowledge of Luther, and told
not only of his personality traits but his life career. Kittleson starts the reader off before Luther is
born and takes him through his life's career all the way to Luther's death. One thing that I found
interesting in the book was rather than start with Luther when he began to study theology, he began
before Luther was even born discussing the life of Luther's father. Luther was born as a peasant to
Hans and Margaretta Luder, the author says "Luther's birth was a matter of such insignificance that
he and his friends later debated the exact year," (pg.31) meaning that not even Luther himself knew
when he was born because it was so unimportant. Luther's father, Hans, was a very successful and

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Goodfellas '
Famous director Martin Scorsese made history by directing two of the most prolific mob movies of
all time, The Goodfellas (1990) and The Departed (2006). Both were nominated for Academy
Awards; however, The Goodfellas lost the award, making The Departed Scorsese's first Oscar
winning movie. Although it lost the Academy Award, The Goodfellas was the most Oscar–worthy of
the two movies based on it's cinematic elements, like editing, camera movement, and effects, and its
dramatic elements, such as acting, costumes and makeup, and lighting. The Goodfellas presents a
much more technically advanced film, complete with clever and innovative details that make the
movie stand out against its successor. Scorsese uses various dramatic elements in The Goodfellas to
make the film the superior mob film. The acting in The Goodfellas is superb, the combination of
actors and their unique contributions to the movie make for dynamic and realistic portrayal of mob
life. Specifically, Joe Pesci, who plays Tommy DeVito, uses his improv and wild mood changes to

During the sixteenth century, numerous conditions and beliefs existed that cause the Protestant

unintentional. Finally, I had to go back to the article of the resulting conflict between the Lockheed–
Martin Corporation and the Pentagon to determine whether the conflict was intentional or

Throughout the entirety of human existence, man has thought within the realm of the universe, and
has relatively recently found the usage of technology as a means to an end. Technology as a whole is
reliant upon humanity for it's creation, and we are it's sole provider of it's unconcealment.
These statements sum up what Martin Heidegger deplores about modern technological thought. In
fact, at first it seems that Heidegger despises technology. Once one becomes more acclimated to his
etymology, and looks more deeply into his explanation, we see technology as a challenging forth, a
prodding of the environment. What Heidegger truly means to accomplish with his essay The
Question Concerning Technology is not to defame technological advancement or technology in
general. It is to ready humans for a "free relationship" with technology, and to make us think
critically and artfully about what the implications are for our current mode of thought. We invoke
the usage of technology, and create it. However, understanding the essence of technology has
become overly simplified. Understanding the essence of technology should not be left to the
technical, scientific minds as it is today, but rather, the philosophical minds. Heidegger seems to say
that without this understanding, we will rot in the dismissive arrogance of presuming we control the

single controversy in the Catholic Church, and ended up becoming the basis of a split in
Christianity. This influential document was one theological professor's response to the sale of
indulgences, a practice long supported by Catholic leaders. Indulgences were a way to lessen
punishment after sin. Martin Luther was livid at the thought of people buying their way to salvation,
as it contradicted his strong belief that redemption was determined by faith, and that the Bible was
the ultimate religious authority, as opposed to the Pope. On a pilgrimage to Rome, Luther witnessed
flocks of peasants spending their life savings on indulgences for their dead relatives. At the
monastery, Luther struggled to find peace with God; his superior, Johann von Staupitz, chose not to

The Military Crisis Of The Roman Empire
Before the military crisis of the Third Century of the Roman Empire, the armies were under proper
recruitment, training and deployment. They even had armories different from the rest. The Roman
army was divided into two groups with various functions, which had the overall element of defense.
Frontier troops were in charge of the borders, while the mobile field forces were overseeing towns
and cities. Frontier troops fought against weak threats like raiding along the border and prevented
major attacks while buying time for the intervention of mobile field forces. The mobile field forces
responded and stopped the invaders trying to enter the Roman territory. The Roman Empire was a
stable state that ran for almost 500 years as a superpower. Historians tell of various reasons that led
to the crumbling and collapse of the empire. Some of them are:

For a long time, Rome had conflicts with Germanic tribes such as the Goths. The Romans had

Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence, Italy in March of

In 1497 Vespucci said that he went on a voyage to the "New World." Little is known
about this because there was not much evidence to support that he actually made this voyage such
as: journals, maps they used, or any crew members journals about what happened. He was said to be
back in 1498. Later on down the road, after this journey was said to take place people began to
doubt this and Columbus became known as the founder of the
"New World" even though he thought he was in India. In
1499 Vespucci was said to have made his second voyage with Alonso de Ojeda as the captain. This
voyage could be backed by a great deal of evidence and is supposed to have occurred. The

Verde Islands, and this is the first time anyone has been purposely to the "New World."
On this first journey
Vespucci explored the north eastern coast of South America and also came in contact with Cuba,
Hispaniola, and the
Bahaman Islands. Vespucci got back to Spain in 1500 and told everyone about his findings of the
land and the people.
On May 19, 1501 Vespucci left from the ports of the sponsoring Spain on his third voyage. On this
voyage
Vespucci was second in charge behind Gonocalo Coelho, another one of Spains' explorers. They
explored on this expedition the Cape Santo Agostinho at the shoulder of present day Brazil. This
voyage was one of the less successful because they explored only limited water
