Promoting student power in the choice of high school literature can prove uncomfortable, wild, and touchy. Without the right amount of preparation,
research, and reading, teachers may find language, content, and themes to be more mature than they really wanted. Young adults' choices in

How Should Mark A Book?
"How to Mark a Book" by Mortimer Adler is an essay about how one should mark a book in order to actively engage in the act of reading. The
essay describes the benefits of writing in books and how writing in books benefits the reader. Many interesting points are argued in this essay about
why one should mark a book; however, some of the points mentioned are not entirely true. Even though marking in a book has proven to help a reader

outside sources should not be marked on because the outside sources most likely expect one to return the book to them in the same condition that it
was given to the reader in. Adler compares writing in a book given from an outside source to Paradise Lost. He writes, "I'd no more scribble over a first

Andrew Carnegie was Scottish immigrant who became one of the most famous businessmen and was a self–made man during the Gilded Age in 1870's

The Library Field At A Young Age
Introduction I became interested in the library field at a young age. Through school library programs and trips to the public library with my family I
developed an appreciation for the library as a place and for the talented men and women who staffed the library. This appreciation continued through my
time at Southern Connecticut State University, where I earned my BS in information and library science in the winter of 2011. It was in through the
university's library, Hilton C. Buley library, that I revived my first professional experience in the field oflibrary science. I worked for three years at
Buley as a student worker in the access services department. During these three years I felt an immense sense of fulfillment in my work which
propelled me to further my education in the field and enroll at San Jose State University. After graduating from Southern Connecticut State

The assumption that the internet can replace libraries is one built on underestimation of what a library is and how it has, and continues to, evolve. The
idea of a library is something built from personal experiences and relies on nostalgia. But libraries today are not what they were in the past, nor can
they be in the future, "Libraries need to take the time to ask hard questions about how their patrons are seeking knowledge and using information

Purposes of Subscription Library
Following the years of revolution, the eighteenth century was relatively stable and peaceful age. General improvement of life and urbanisation led to
increase in the amount of spare time and money. The commercialisation of the leisure also made recreational activity more affordable, especially for the
new middle class constituted by professionals. Their new vulnerable status in the society led them to seek their own culture, such as participation to
society activities and enrolment to the subscription library. Subscription Library was first established in Liverpool in 1758, and it spread across
Britain, growing the number of subscribers along the way. It was essentially a private library, requiring a payment of a guinea for entry and another
ten shillings or so for the annual subscription fee. In turn, the members were allowed access to the permanent collection of the books. In this essay, I
would like to discuss the possible purposes of the subscription library in the eighteenth century, by studying the library catalogues and regulations.
Firstly the library's role in the associationalism and the polite culture would be considered. Then I would like to discuss how the library served as a
place of forming a uniformed society, offering useful knowledge and promoting equality. Lastly, its exclusiveness would be studied. The purpose of

Library Donation Books
This summer I spent hours on the library's third floor, a large area used for storage since the 1970's; no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted
through 177 boxes of books that were donated to the library. Library staff are not following the current donation policy and all donated books are
given to the Friends Book Sale. Many books in my Adult Fiction section are in well–loved condition with water damage, broken spines and torn pages.
Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300 adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd Thomas by Dean
Koontz. The donation books were used to replace 450 "loved books" with newer copies, example replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The
Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand new copy. My frustration leads me to search for information about how to handle book donations in a

The Importance Of Public Spaces
Cities are full of public spaces, some for walking, some for sitting, and some for standing. These public spaces can be good for just one activity
like many sidewalks, or they can be good for all activities like well laid out public parks. Most of the public spaces within a city will be soft edges.
Soft edges are the spaces between, in front, and behind buildings. Soft edges may consist of alley ways between buildings, sidewalks in front of
buildings, or courtyards behind buildings. Usually the goal of city planning is to create well rounded soft edges because they help the life
between buildings. The soft edges at the Werwath Mall between MSOE's science building and library are good for walking, but not so good for
either sitting or standing. In her book Life Between Buildings, Jan Gehl (2011) states, "walking is first and foremost a type of transportation, a
way to get around, but it also provides an informal and uncomplicated possibility for being present in the public environment" (p. 133). The act of
walking is usually done because it is necessary. For a space to be good for walking it has to have plenty of space so that people can get to where they

In most towns or cities, you will find a library; whether it contains "old–school features", including a card catalogue, a historian, and an old librarian
shushing you for talking too loud, or it features modern aspects, like usable iPads, eBooks, and lots of noise being made. The local library in my town
became my home as a child.
I enjoyed reading many books throughout my childhood, and there is no better place to read a book than a library, which had become my favourite

As technology advances and progresses more, some people began to question the existence of public libraries and what value they'll hold in the
future. More devices are being produced that can replace books, such as Kindles, Nooks, and other apps that can be downloaded on any portable

Banning books seems like a great idea, but in reality people are going to read, and do, whatever they want to. A lot of books have explicit language,
violence, and sexual content. Most kids know about all of those things, even though they shouldn't know about those things. Banning them from
reading a book that includes those explicit things, at school, doesn't mean they won't go and read it at home, or at a friends house. Schools, and

In her essay "Claiming the Public Space: The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo," Susana Torre discusses the ability of a small group of women to effectively
appropriate an important urban space in Buenos Aires in protest of the government's practices of political suppression and forced disappearances during

Pros And Cons Of Censorship In School Libraries
In school libraries, the idea of censorship has always been considered. Those who choose to declare a censorship on books are appeasing the idea
that we should not put ourselves in the position to read a book that may be seen as inappropriate. This is understandable, as some authors may include
extremely dark and questionable things in their writings. But I also believe that we have complete choice in what we should read and what we should
put upon ourselves in general. Censorships in the library takes away the opportunities we are given when we wish to read a book that can help us get
away from our problems and create a whole new world for ourselves.
As authors create new worlds for us to experience, it seems only unfair to place censorship on what we are able to read because of another's
opinion. Authors write books that they are particularly honored to discharge into the world for others to experience the worlds in which they create.
While I understand the idea of allowing censorship for school libraries, it may be hard for authors to accept this idea. I don't agree that censorship
should be considered in libraries given the fact that having the choice of what you put yourself through is up to you, and shouldn't need to pertain to

It has been established that visual privacy and how open it is to the public's eyes plays a role on the type of activities performed. But there is another
factor at play in where and when some activities are done. This factor is what the family considers to be private and public space. Take the basement,
for instance. Due to the placement of the windows, it is the second most private place, after the bathrooms. But, in terms of what happens in the
basement, it is one of the most public spaces. The basement is where the only television in the house is located. There are two couches and two tables
conveniently placed so that viewing is optimal. That makes the basement the de facto entertainment room. Usually by the evening, everyone in the

Books are the spreader of both bad and good knowledge and I believe that we should no longer contain or ban books just because they are offensive
to certain groups in America. The debate on challenged books is a hot topic in America because the country is founded on a basis offreedom of speech.
Many books have been challenged or censored during different places and time periods. For example, the earliest book censorship in America was done

Strengths
Located in Canada's capital, Carleton University's MacOdrum Library is situated in a prime location for students and the community –– even having a
dedicated stop along the light rail system known as the OTrain. The library is minutes from downtown and various cultural institutions such as the
Canadian War Museum, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History, the Royal Canadian Mint, Canada Aviation and Space
Museum, and the Canadian Museum of Nature. Being in Ottawa also gives MacOdrum Library a strong connection to federal government departments.

My Love Of Books
I can hardly imagine my life without begin able to read or write. These skills are not vital to one's survival as are obtaining food, clothes or shelter;
however, they have been and still are definitely "life preservers" and "instrumental to my survival." As a little girl, I remember a favorite nursery rhyme
book I looked at over and over, and learning to read an Early Reader book about Dick, Jane, Spot and Puff in school. I was so excited when I could read
the words to go with the pictures. I worked hard trying to print single letters and the letters of my name on a tablet of specially–lined paper designed for

According to police, officers nobody has the right to record. Whether it is publicly, or an investigation being done outside on the street. Now a
days we do not have the right to do anything outside in the public. My question is why? If we all have the right to do whatever we want. Many city
journalists' even people have been arrested for not even committing a crime but simply filming. You would ask me is this right? Well I would say no

Until recently, the trend of banning thousands of time–honored books was routinely taking place in public libraries and schools across the country.
Presently, many censored books are prevailing on library shelves and remaining in the hands of students. Without a doubt, banning a book entirely
deprives people of being able to think differently and learn about new topics. However, censoring books is an exceptional way to allow those who
are easily offended to read a written work without raising an eyebrow. A person will still comprehend the idea of a censored text, while not becoming
insulted by it. Written texts should not be banned because people should be able to choose for themselves what they wish to read, but written texts
should be censored for people who are sensitive and feel a text is too provocative or offensive for them.
Banning a written text is wrong and unacceptable for numerous reasons. Banning a text limits people's point of view and keeps them in their comfort
zone; people are able to choose for themselves what they want to read. Limiting society's point of view is a crime; people will forever be narrow

My Personal Experience Of Reading : My Experience With...
In the topic of reading, I see myself as someone who has the ability and potential to become a great reader but, has trouble settling on a book that I
find enjoyable. Recently I do feel that I have been improving but, in the past, my history with reading was not the greatest. Unfortunately, I still cannot
say reading is a hobby of mine but, I hope that in the upcoming years that will change. In my younger years, my experience with reading was that the
teacher would assign the class a specific book and I would force myself to read. I feel like this is a big factor in the way I saw reading getting up to
this stage, as back then I found reading as homework which was like a punishment. I want to be able to move away from that mentality and start
reading for the enjoyment. In the past couple years, I started recognizing different types of books that fit my interests and what gets me hooked. I love
books that are deep and meaningful, books that will keep one thinking and are unpredictable. I have noticed that most books that I tend to love are non
– fiction because, in my opinion, these types of books hold the most interesting stories and have the most meaning. Lately, I have been trying to
strengthen my patience in getting over books to quickly, I feel like improving this will also help me find more interests in different types/genres of

Are Roadside Memorials a Distraction for Drivers?
Unlike a grave site memorial, which marks where a body is burried, roadside memorials shows where a person died abruptly and unpredictably.
When we see one, we get curious automatically and ask what might have happened in that place. Perhaps the basic reaction that we give when we
see a roadside memorial is enough to understand its purpose and tolerate its presence when we are on the road. However, Some of the usual
arguments that people post in opposing the presence of these memorials are dangerous distractions for drivers, illegal displays of religious symbols
and it constitute the taking of public property for private purposes (Tiernan, 2009). I would like to argue all these arguments as I believe that the
relevance of memorials outweighs all these concerns. I really cannot consider memorials are dangerous as distraction for drivers. I cannot believe
that a mere memorial can become a distraction. The only thing that can happen to a driver when he or she sees a memorial is that she/he will drive
slowly before passing it out of curiosity. This argument is simply based on probability and there is no evidence that memorial had causedroad accidents
