Alexander Weygers lived a life of creative adventure on an income so low it never interested the
Internal Revenue Service. He continually complained that man's essential failure was to know when
enough was enough, and he used the line at which he would need to write a check to the IRS as his
definition of "enough." There was one occasion, though, when he flirted with that line. "I got
trapped by my own success," he said. Weygers' dalliance with the tax man came in the late 1950s
when he traded a piece of sculpture for an Exacta single–lens camera. It was a particularly cold
winter on the Monterey Peninsula. Toward the conclusion of a trip to a junkyard in Salinas, heavy
sleet began to fall. As he waited in the bed of his truck for the storm to pass, Weygers picked up the
camera that happened to be beside him and began taking super–close–up photos of the raindrops on
the windshield. The clouds eventually parted and rays of light pierced the droplets, causing a
refraction in his lens. Weygers hurried home and began playing with light refractions on leaves and
frozen–over chuckholes. He then raced to the beach, taking similar zoomed–in shots of a piece of

Marian Anderson : An American Concert Performer From...
Marian Anderson was an American contralto concert performer from Philadelphia. Born in 1897 to a
schoolteacher and ice and coal seller, Anderson showed musical talent from an early age. She started
singing in her church choir at age 6 and at age 14, with her powerful and beautiful voice, she moved
up to the adult choir. The other members were so impressed with her abilities that they started
"Marian Anderson's Future Fund" to help raise money for professional training (Biography 2015).
After her father's death in 1911, Anderson devoted herself to her musical aspirations. In high school,
her music teacher arranged for Giuseppe Boghetti, the famous Italian voice master, to listen to her
perform. He described the encounter like this: "at the end of a long hard day, when I was weary of
singing and singers, and when a tall calm girl poured out 'Deep River' in the twilight and made me
cry" (Biography 2015). The money her congregation had raised through the future fund went toward
paying for the lessons with Boghetti.
While studying under Boghetti, Anderson entered a contest organized by the New York
Philharmonic Society and won a chance to perform at the Lewisohn Stadium in New York. In 1928,
she performed at Carnegie Hall for the first time and kicked off her European tour.
Anderson performed around the country and through Europe thanks to the Julius Rosenwald
Scholarship, acquiring fans from all over, among them King Gustav of Stockholm and King

nine years old, Fransisco was eight years old, and Jacinta was six years old. One day, a really strong
wind blew over the hill where the young children were playing. Above the trees they saw something
coming at them. They describe the boy that came to them to be about fifteen years old. They also
say that his clothes were whiter than snow and as clear as a crystal. The children say that he was
very beautiful saying to them " Do not be afraid! I am the angel of peace." Please pray with me. So

Being a Mexican– American can be really tiresome. Having to uphold the expectation of being in
touch with my Mexican culture, and at the same time, my American culture can be frustrating. Both
cultures have made me who I am, the brown girl with long curly hair and indigenous facial features

greatest ornament of our age." Born in Cambrai, northern France in 1397, Dufay's life was
bifurcated between France and Italy. Known as "The Father of the Renaissance," he is credited with

the Renaissance, Marian veneration was performed within liturgies. France's Chartres Cathedral, the

"The Imitation Game" by Morten Tyldum, is a handsomely engrossing and poignantly melancholic
thriller about code–cracking World War Two thrills. Alan Turing successfully attempts to break the

Conflict is all over this film emotionally and physically, externally and internally, especially in the

The Imitation Game is a 2014 American historical drama film directed by Morten Tyldum and
written by Graham Moore, which is based on the biography Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew
Hodges. It is about the code breaking program by the British during World War II, which helped
Britain to break encoded Enigma messages from the Germans. Alan Turning, the main character, is a
homosexual mathematician that is in charge of the project and is portrayed as a selfish genius that

caused Germany to lose the war. I had a lot of German history in high school, since it is obviously

Successful classical soprano performer Leontyne Price was one of the first artists to benefit from
Marian Anderson's hard work and dedication. The day after Marian Anderson's death, April 8th,
1993 Price discussed the ways in which Anderson was able to overcome obstacles while remaining
consistently professional and keeping the high standards she set on her performances. Marian
Anderson was born on February 27, 1897. She was considered one of the most celebrated African–
American artists of the twentieth century. Anderson identified herself as a contralto, which is the

Everyone has a passion, everyone has a purpose, but more importantly everyone has an impact. In
the beginning of the 20th Century, there was a boy named Alan Turing who seemed like any other
troublesome delinquent, but as he grew he became one of the most crucial tools for the British
Military. Morten Tyldum directs, "The Imitation Game," which is a piece of cinematography created
to illustrate the period of time during WWII where the German use of the Enigma code, which is an
encrypted form of communication, had not yet been solved. This mystery allowed Germans to
communicate freely, without having to worry about other countries interfering.. The British force
attempted to crack the code, but there were several obstacles that stood in their way that earned the
enigma code, impossible to crack. The decryption of the Enigma code was such a daunting task
primarily because there were millions upon millions of settings for the transmitting machine, and
those attempting to understand had less than 24 hours to crack it, or else the cycle started over. The

First it introduces the whole crew and it gives a preview on how they plan on getting along while

Marian Wright Edelman was born on June 6, 1939. Edelman is an American activist for the rights of
children. Edelman's mother and father who was a Baptist minister taught her and her siblings that
serving in their community was life's duty. Edelman's parents also taught her and her siblings that
poverty nor racism should ever get in their way of trying to achieve something. The way Edelman
was raised was an inspiration to her and she knew she wanted to make a change for the better in this
country. In 1973 Edelman founded the Children's Defense Fund. The purpose of the organization is
to "to ensure every child a healthy start, a head start, a fair start, a safe start, and a moral start in life
and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities." (Wikipedia)
In the essay "Standing Up for Children" Edelman's purpose is for us the people to treat children
right and others fairly regardless of their color or economic status. Edelman herself is African
American. Her thesis is stated directly throughout her whole essay. Edelman uses forms of patterns
throughout her essay to get her points across. In her essay she asks a lot of questions and then
provides us with the answers. She also uses and quotes the bible to prove and refer back to her
points. The reason why I believe she asks us questions is to get us thinking while were reading and

Mary's Magnificat
When I decided to preach my third sermon on Mary's Magnificat, out of the first chapter of Luke, I
wasn't sure it was a very good idea. Not because it didn't fit the required theme – the Magnificat is
about as Advent–focused as you can get – but because since I began preaching on a weekly basis six
months ago, I have become comfortable with my chatty exegetical preaching style, in which I
explore the scriptures with my congregation in an informal way. Preaching on the Magnificat would
make that a bit more difficult to do, particularly in the time frame of ten minutes, but even more so
without notes. Alternatively, I considered preaching a sermon on the topic "The Messiness of
Christmas" and focusing on the grittiness of the birth narrative and the messiness that often comes
with family Christmases today. However, as I always want to try new things with my preaching, I
decided to go with the Magnificat. In the style of Anna Carter Florence, I usually prefer to sit with
the text and see where it takes me, which is what I did with this. As I read through it, I made a list of
some questions that came to mind. Those included:
What is Mary really saying here? It's a song of praise, but it isn't truly a joyful, happy song.
What can we learn about the socio–political world in which Mary lives by what she says here?
How can Mary's words apply to our world today?
