COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to Anti-skid Devices for Vehicle Wheels I,
FRITZ LIECHTI, of 5, Scharenmoosstrasse, Zurich 11/52, Switzerland, a
Swiss Citizen, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that
a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be
performed, to be particularly described in and by the following
2. statement:-
The present invention relates to devices of the kind generally
referred to as anti-skid devices, which can be detachably secured to
the wheels or tyres of wheeled vehicles to increase the " grip " of
the wheels on the road surface particularly in ice and snow.
The invention provides an anti-skid device for fitting to the wheels
of wheeled vehicles said device providing on each wheel a plurality of
elements each of which extends transversely across the wheel or tyre
periphery said elements being disposed, in use, in spaced relationship
around the wheel or tyre, each said element consisting of a strap one
surface of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projections,
each said projection having a hole for the accommodation of a stud
each of which extends through a projection to provide a studded
surface, the studs having enlarged heads at one end which are disposed
between the opposing surfaces of the strap and wheel or tyre when the
device is attached to a wheel.
The plurality of elements may be interconnected by two chains disposed
one on each side of the assembled elements, each element being secured
at its opposite ends to a link of the adjacent chain by securing
means.
In order that the invention may clearly be understood and carried into
effect the same will now be described by aid of the accompanying
drawings in whichFig. 1 is a perspective view showing part of a
vehicle wheel fitted with the anti-skid device; Fig. 2 is a top plan
view of an element for use in the construction of an anti-skid device;
and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the element shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the element consists of a
strap 2 of flexible material, for example natural or synthetic 5a
rubber, one surface of which is provided with spaced projections 11
interconnected by webs 10.
The strap is provided with a plurality of holes 12 extending through
the thickness of 5 the strap within the area of each projection, each
hole providing an aperture for the reception of the shank of a stud 13
each of which has an enlarged head 14, the free ends of the studs
projecting beyond the surface of 60 the projections on the strap.
As shown in Fig. I a number of elements as described above are
interconnected to provide a unitary assembly which can be removably
fitted to the wheel 1 of a vehicle to 65 provide an anti-skid device.
For this purpose the elements are assembled side by side in spaced
relationship and interconnected at their opposite ends by chains 3,
each element being attached at its 70 opposite ends to the chains by
releasable securing means.
As shown in the drawings the releasable securing means consists of
opposed plates 5 adapted to be clamped together by a clamp- 75.
3. ing screw 9. The opposing surfaces of the clamping plates 5 are
provided with pairs of aligned grooves 6 and 8, the grooves extending
parallel to one another and arranged on opposite sides of the clamping
screw 9. 80When the plates 5 are clamped by the clamping screws 9 the
grooves 6 provide together an aperture for the location of a beaded
edge 4 provided at opposite ends of the strap, the grooves 8 providing
together a 85 further aperture for the location of one side of a link
of the chain 3.
The assembly of elements as shown in Fig. 1 can be fitted to the wheel
of a vehicle with the elements extending transversely 90g 780,102
across the periphery of the wheel tyre the heads 14 of the studs 13
being disposed between the opposing surfaces of the strap and the
-wheel or tyre. The chains 3 extend around the wheel on opposite sides
the reof, and the elements are held tightly in position by pulling the
free ends of each chain together and securing the same with a chain
lock (not shown) of any suitable and k-nownm kind.
Should the projecting ends of the studs become worn or damaged, they
cin be removed and replaced or an element may b2 removed as a whole
and replaced by a new element. Removal and replacement of an element
can be effected rapidly aed saimply by suitable manipulation of the
clamnpin plates 5.
It is also possible with the anti-skid device of the present invention
to vary in a simple and rapid manner thile number of elements used in
the assembly to suit particular requirements dictated by road
conditions.
Instead of providing an anti-skid device in the form of a unitary
assembly each element may be fitted independently to the wheel or
wheel rim.
