2. Basic problem
1. Uncleanliness of Railway stations(station,foot
overbridge,toilets etc )
2. Not proper entry and exit points for railway
station.
3. At some stations foot over bridge are not
properly designed.
4. Unhygenic railway canteen food.
6. CST rush crush will only worsen by
2020
• According to a recent study carried out by French consultancy firm AREP, which
has been appointed to draw the blueprint to transform CST into a world-class
station over the next five years, traffic at the historic station is expected to grow at
3% annually till 2020.
This figure was arrived at after studying traffic growth patterns at the historic
stations on a daily basis as well as growth over the last couple of years.
Currently, during rush hour in the morning, between 9 and 10 am, a staggering
1.33 lakh people sweep through the concourse, and at peak time in the evening,
between 6 and 7 pm, 1.6 lakh commuters sweep through again.
Projections show that over the next decade, at a growth rate of 3% annually, the
corresponding figures will rise to 1.84 lakh and 2.29 lakh.
Railway sources told TOI that at every four minutes, during peak hours, three
trains pull into the station and 6,000 to 8,000 persons are disgorged on to the
suburban platforms and concourse. This excludes those at the booking windows,
the main concourse and long-distance platforms.
7. • With such heavy traffic, bottlenecks at the entry and exit points are
inevitable.
According to railway sources, the new entrance to CST through P D'Mello
Road, which was thrown open last year, has not found too many takers.
"Therefore, a lot of vehicular traffic gets concentrated at the main
entrance. There is ample parking space at the new entrance and we have
even placed advertisements to get people to use it, but response has been
poor," said the source.
Besides, most suburban commuters use either the subway to enter the
station, the bridge near the TOI building, made infamous by Kasab, or the
side entrance near the RPF chowkie. Most long-distance commuters use
the side entrance near the taxi stand.
The new lifts between platforms 16 and 18, which opened on August 15,
are also mostly empty. Officials hope that with time, they will become
more popular.
Sources said that there are many variables on which future traffic patterns
depend, such as new business districts and increase in services. AREP will
look at solutions to all growth patterns.
8. Reality
• Consider prime time slot of 6am-9am.
• There are 51 trains in this slot from KALYAN to
CST.
• There are 12 boogies in each train. Recently
increased from 9 to 12.
• Each trains consists of 3 ladies boogie,1
cancer/ph,3 first,1 luggage,4 second class.
• In each boogie actual capacity is of 100 seats
only.
9. Reality
• Each boogie carries about 200-250 at least.
• If we consider 250 then each train carries
almost 2750 persons.
• Moreover the railways in prime time carries
almost 1,37,500 persons.
• Actual carrying capacity of train is 70000
persons only.
• Means in reality double number of trains are
required for in that time slot.
10. What the government is doing ?
• ????
• Mumbai city has very high load because it’s
the financial capital of india.
• And as fast the city has grown the transport
system(railways, roads) has not been
improved at that speed.
• Ex. The bandra worli sea link took 12 years to
complete.
11. • So govt is trying to reduce the load of mumbai
by developing new city (navi mumbai).
• But again it will also take time.
• And to increase the efficency of railways that
will also take time at least 3-5 years.
• So whats the solution for timebeing??
12. Applying 5S principle
• SORTING OUT
• DIVIDE THE RUSH based on there NEEDS.
• In one train we have now every compartment
like ladies,2nd class,1st class, cancer/ph,luggage
etc.
• Divide it.
• Now there are special full ladies train at 8.00
am
13. IDEA
• There must be five types of trian.
1. AC (not there)
2. 1st class
3. 2nd class
4. 3rd class(not there)
5. Ladies special
14. IDEA
• What will happen by doing this????
• The rush which accumulates for each train will
reduce to some extent.
• And the people will know now which train
they have to travel from.
• Consider 70% people are travelling from 2nd
class
• 15% from 1st class
15. IDEA
• 5% will travel from 1st AC
• And remaining 10% MISCLLEANOUS.
• By doing these the system will look systematic,
standardize, and people will get self discipline.
• Basic IDEA BEHIND IT IS 5S
• SEIRI
• SEITON
• SEISO
• SEIKETSU
• SHITSUKE.
