2. DEFINITION
• In politics and sociology divide and rule (divide and conquer)
is gaining and maintaining power by breaking up
concentrations of power into pieces that individually have less
power than the one implementing the strategy.
• The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power
structures and prevents smaller power groups from linking up.
3. ELEMENTS
• Creating or encouraging divisions among the subjects to
prevent alliances that could challenge the sovereign
• Aiding and promoting those who are willing to cooperate with
the sovereign
• Fostering distrust and enmity between local rulers
• Encouraging meaningless expenditures that reduce the
capability for political and military spending
Historically, this strategy was used by many different empires
who seek to expand their territories.
4. SPANISH CONQUEST
• The Filipinos were not united. They did not think of
themselves as one nation. So the Spaniards divided and
conquered them. Spain played one tribe against another.
For example the Visayans were used to put down a revolt in
the Tagalog region. The Christian were used to fight against the
Filipino Muslims and pagan minorities.
5. • The Filipinos were converted to Roman Catholic. So they are
obliged to be loyal to the Spanish officialsand priests who
converted them and who defended that religion.
For example the Catholics fought alongside Spain against the
Muslim and the Protestants of Dutch and Brittain.
6. • The Filipinos were offered rewards and honors by the spanish
rulers. The Spanish flattered and took care of the loyal
Filipinos, but they punished and killed the ones who
disobeyed or revolted.
For example loyal Filipinos were given positions in the local
government as "gobernadorcillos" (little governor) and "cabeza
de barangay" (barangay chiefs).
