2. Imperialism Defined
• Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire
or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and
dependencies.
• Colonialism the control or governing influence of a nation over a
dependent country, territory, or people.
• Annexation is the act or an instance of annexing, especially new territory.

3. Social Darwinism
• Define: It especially refers to notions of struggle for existence being used
to justify social policies which make no distinction between those able to
support themselves and those unable to support themselves.
• Social Darwinism is the same to Imperialism because they both have the
powers to let one country control another.

4. “White Mans Burden”
• White Mans Burden is a poem by the English poet Rudyard Kipling.
Kipling changed the text of "Burden" to reflect the subject of American
colonization of the Philippines, recently won from Spain in the Spanish-
American War.

5. Racism and Missionary
Impulse
• Racism is Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a
different race based on such a belief.
• Paternalism is the system, principle, or practice of managing or governing
individuals, businesses, nations, etc., in the manner of a father dealing
benevolently and often intrusively with his children.
• Paternalism can be racist because they make you follow their own system
or principles
• Missionaries try and control and tell people what to practice and what
should be there values.

6. The Scramble for Africa
• It happened between 1881 and 1914.
• The Scramble for Africa was a process of invasion, occupation,
colonization and annexation of African territory by European powers
during the New Imperialism period.
• The Berlin Conference was an attempt to mediate imperial competition.

7. Nationalism
• Nationalism is is a political ideology that involves a strong identification
of a group of individuals with a political entity.

8. Colonized Vs.
Colonizers
• To get more land, Become a stronger
nation, To become more known around the
world, and people would fear them.
• I would assume the people that were
getting taken over were very frightened.
They didn’t want to loose their morals,
religion, values, and their land.
