1. Describe the narrative structure of your fiction/ factual story.
The story that I am
going to tell is the life
of the American
serial killer,
kidnapper, rapist,
burglar and
necrophile Theodore
Robert Bundy or as
some may know him
as Ted Bundy who
assaulted and
murdered numerous
young women and
girls during the
1970’s and possibly
earlier.
2. As my I'm doing a non-fiction story on Ted Bundy and the crimes that he committed from 1969 to 1978 then the
narrative structure that I'm using is a closed structure as my story has a clear defined ending to the horrible crimes
that he has committed which is him being finally caught and put to death in January 1989, ten years after being on
trial for his crimes.
How have theories connected to narrative informed the development of
your story?
2.Distruption
3.Conflict
4.Resolution
5.New
Equilibrium
1.Equilibrium
3. Describe how existing films, documentaries, hypertext fictions, interactive documentaries etc.
Have informed the development and solution for your prosed interactive fiction/non-fiction.
There is a lot of different existing
films, tv shows and documentaries
that has informed me in the
development of my proposed
interactive non-fiction project a
one of which are Sherlock where as
each new episode is similar to
Todorov's narrative theory as in the
show it follows the steps that he
uses to make up his narrative
theory.
4. How does your proposed interactive fiction/non-fiction engage and
immerse the user?
For my proposed interactive non-fiction project I am going to use a
range of different approaches to help engage and immerse the user
one of them is going to be by using verbal storytelling which's helps
to creative non-fiction to narrate a sequence of events and
interactions and also helps to offer a insight of the provides insight
into the events that happened.
5. Describe how the visual design solutions for your interactive narrative,
resolves issues connected to closure, disorientation and interpretation.
As I'm doing a non-fiction
story and using a closed
structure narrative the
user wont feel
disorientated by what
happened throughout my
interactive project as they
will find out what
happened to Ted Bundy
no mater what as I am
using a voice over to
narrate the story therefore
they will hear the ending.
Editor's Notes
The story that I am going to tell is the life of the American serial killer, kidnapper, rapist, burglar and necrophile Theodore Robert Bundy or as some may know him as Ted Bundy who assaulted and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970’s and possibly earlier.
Ted Bundy was born on November 24th 1946 to Eleanor Louise Cowell. Due to the fact that his mother became pregnant out of wedlock she was made go to Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington, Vermont.
Although his birth certificate assigned paternity to a salesman and Air Force Veteran named Lloyd Marshall there is speculation to believe that he is not the father of Bundy due to the fact that his mother Louise later claimed that she was seduced by a sailor who goes by the name of Jack Worthington who there were no records of in the Navy or Merchant Marine records, therefore some of her family members lead to believe that her violent, abusive father Samuel Cowell was the father to Bundy.
For the first three years of Bundy’s life he lived with his grandparents who raised him as there son due to the fact of the time period that he was born in as there was a lot of social stigma that came with a child being born outside of a marriage, therefor he grew up thinking that his mother Louise was his sister and did not find out the truth of his real parentage until he located the birth certificate in Vermont in 1969 and resented his mother for never telling him the truth about his real father.
On many different occasions he has said that he spoke warmly about his grandparent and thought that he “identified with”, “respected” and “clung” to his grandfather. Although he and other family members said the Samuel Cowell was a bully and bigot who hated blacks, Italians, Catholics and Jews. He was also believed to beat his wife and children repeatlively, he was also seen being cruel to animals by dragging them by the tail and swinging them around. When Bundy was younger he tend to exhibited disturbing behaviour such as placing knifes all around his sleeping aunt for her to wake up with him standing by her side smiling, he done this at the age of three.
Bundy’s life was all going well going to university to study law until he started ditching class and then when he stopped attending entirely around the same time that young women began to disappear in the Pacific Northwest.
It wasn’t much longer that he turned to crime again as he said that he first attempted to kidnap one in 1969 in Ocean City, New Jersey and from then a series of murders, assaults, theft and kidnaps occurred until he was caught on February 12th 1978 and taken into custody by the Pensacola Police officer David Lee.
The first trail that took place regarding Bundy’s crimes was them in Florida in the sorority house in Florida on June 1979 where he brutally murdered and assaulted the girls who where living in the house which he was found guilty of all the crimes and was sentence to death.
Six months later a second trial took place for the abduction and murder of Kimberly Leach which he is also found guilty of doing. He was then finally put to death on January 24th 1989 aged 42 by the electric chair.
How have theories connected to narrative informed the development of your story?
As my I'm doing a non-fiction story on Ted Bundy and the crimes that he committed from 1969 to 1978 then the narrative structure that I'm using is a closed structure as my story has a clear defined ending to the horrible crimes that he has committed which is him being finally caught and put to death in January 1989, ten years after being on trial for his crimes.
Narrative theories connect to my the development of my story as they help me to see how I should get what I want my audience to know out. I feel that Todorov’s narrative theory of going from a equilibrium which I feel in my case for my story is the birth and childhood of Ted Bundy then on to disruption which is when he stops attending collage around the time young women began to disappear in the Pacific Northwest.
The next step on Todorov's narrative theory is conflict which is directly related to all the crimes that Bundy committed over his life time, then on to his next step which is the resolution which I feel his related to him being finally capture by the police in 1978 after all the years of trying to find out who was doing the crimes and get the evidence to be able to finally arrest him. The final step in Todorov’s narrative theory is the new equilibrium or the satisfactory end to the story which in this case is Bundy being sentence to death which give the victims and family members of the victims closer to all the pain that he has caused.
There is a lot of different existing films, tv shows and documentaries that has informed me in the development of my proposed interactive non-fiction project a one of which are Sherlock where as each new episode is similar to Todorov's narrative theory as in the show it follows the steps that he uses to make up his narrative theory.
Another show that is CSI as I have grew up watching It as both my parents always watched all these types of shows which made me grow to love crime shows whether its fiction or non-fiction I enjoy both equally as much.
One of the strongest influcese for me would have to be Netflix's Making a Murder which tells the story about Steven Avery and the crimes that he committed, what I like about Making a Murder is that it tells you about his life and not just about the crimes that he do and aledgly done.
The book about Ted Bundy called “Ted Bundy: A Visual Timeline” also helped me to develop my idea as it discuses the so call mythos that have been built up around him over the 40 years since he first came to light.
This book has allowed me to know when each event happened as it presents all the important information on Bundy in chronological order, he gathered this information from a wide range of books, archives, tv, movies, newspaper articles, essays, police reports, court transcripts and from original sources.
This book has been a massive help and influence when it comes to making my interactive narrative project as it gives me the information that I need to help make my project as factual as I can.
For my proposed interactive non-fiction project I am going to use a range of different approaches to help engage and immerse the user one of them is going to be by using verbal storytelling which's helps to creative non-fiction to narrate a sequence of events and interactions and also helps to offer a insight of the provides insight into the events that happened.
I will also use a graphic storytelling to help tell the story of Ted Bundy which will also help the user engage in my interactive project as my idea is to make it as a time like and which you are able to move around to change the time period.
The interface design resolves helps to resolve concepts connected to engagement as the users are able to use there mousepad to change the year or the time that they are at on the timeline which helps the users to engage in the project.
I will also make sure that the users are able to click freely on the different photos and video clips that are throughout the timeline once again helping the use engage with the interactive project.
I am going to try and get my users to immerse with interactive project is by using the likes of real footage of news story's on the crime and court trails that he committed as it was widely broadcasted on American News channels.
As I'm doing a non-fiction story and using a closed structure narrative the user wont feel disorientated by what happened throughout my interactive project as they will find out what happened to Ted Bundy no mater what as I am using a voice over to narrate the story therefore they will hear the ending.
I hope that the users are enticed by the story of Ted Bundy and therefore will want to continue on to find out the final outcome at the end of the time line.
As I am using a timeline which displays all the different events that happened throughout Bundy’s life the user will get a sense of closure as they will be able to navigate there way through the timeline finding out about the different events which will then lead them to the final result which is Ted Bundy being sentence to death for the crimes that he committed throughout his life.
Due to the timeline interface this will help to ensure that the user will not get disorientated when using my interactive non-fiction project as there will be dates of the year or set time period that they are currently viewing.
The visual design of my interactive narrative project will help to resolve issues connected to closure, disorientation and interpretation as the users will have to go throught a number of different stages of the timeline to move on to the next step and once they have finally finished the whole timeline they will be able to move through the whole project being able to click on and watch what they want.
