Sorbead India is a global supplier of Oxygen Absorbers and Humidity Indicating Cards use in Pharmaceutical industries for moisture and humidity solutions.
2. O-Busters
These sachets are specially designed so as to absorb the
moisture in a packed environment bringing down the oxygen
level to almost 0%.
The material of construction of the sachets is a three layer
arrangement comprising of PET/PAPER/PE.
Material inside the sachets is Iron powder, Natural Zeolite,
Salt & water.
Comes in varied sizes.
Sizes range from FT-20cc to FT-3000cc.
The name FT-20cc, FT-50cc etc indicate the absorbing
capacity of these sachets.
It has its presence in many industries, we would now discuss
it’s application in Pharmaceutical & Food industries.
3. Pharmaceutical industry
After hydrolytic degradation, oxidative degradation is one of
the most common modes of degradation addressed by
formulators to protect a drug.
In contrast to hydrolysis, oxidative mechanisms are
complex and often trigger irreversible degradation of the drug
compound once initiated.
Oxygen is a well-known source of degradation in many types of
pharmaceuticals. When drugs are packaged, oxygen that was
trapped in the container headspace during the filling process or
that enters the container from the outer atmosphere during shelf
storage can cause adverse effects, most critically molecular
changes leading to loss of potency.
Pharmaceutical industry directly reflects on the human life and
so all the products related to it are scrutinized carefully before
any application.
4. These O-busters have proved marvelous in the Pharmaceutical
industry to protect the drugs that are sensitive to oxygen.
Some of these Drugs are Atorvastatin, Asenapine, Prasugrel,
Tapentaddol, Parentropil, Fluvastatin, Ethacrynate Sodium and
many more.
These drugs are proved to be highly oxygen sensitive and so the
use of O-Busters along with these increase the shelf life of the
same.
Due to the varied sizes, these sachets can be used for
formulations in bottles as well as in HDPE Drums, LDPE Bags,
Containers for API.
O-Busters eliminate the need to Nitrogen flushing.
5. Recently, however, the need for effective oxygen absorption
solutions has been intensified by three trends:
1. The
demand for increased shelf life allowing for cost
optimization in drug manufacturing and distribution.
2. A higher proportion of molecules in the drug pipeline in Classes
II and IV. These classes of molecules are often formulated with
new galenic forms, which make them more sensitive to oxygen.
3. Potentially greater scrutiny by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) regarding maintenance of potency to the end
of shelf life.
6. How Oxygen affects drugs
Oxygen induces drug degradation
Chemical hydrolysis of drug
Discoloration of product
Harmful reactivity with active compound
Dissolution of disintegrates
Efficacy of drug is lowered
Growth of aerobic micro-organisms
7. How to use the O-Busters?
•O-Busters chemically react with oxygen and to remove it from
the packing area in question.
•These sachets are very reactive and start their action once
exposed to air, this process releases some heat, this heat is minor
when talking about one sachet but when these sachets are
stacked on top of one another the heat increases and the reaction
is fastened.
•So as to prevent this, spread the sachets in a tray so that they
don’t touch each other, and then start the insertion process for
best results.

9. Food Industry
Many foods are very sensitive for oxygen, which is responsible for
the deterioration of many products either directly or indirectly. In
fact, in many cases food deterioration is caused by oxidation
reactions or by the presence of spoilage aerobic microorganisms.
Therefore, in order to preserve these products, oxygen is often
excluded.
Oxygen (O2) presence in food packages is mainly due to
failures in the packaging process, such as mixture of gases
containing oxygen residues, or inefficient vacuum. Vacuum
packaging has been widely used to eliminate oxygen in the
package prior to sealing.
However, the oxygen that permeates from the outside
environment into the package through the packaging material
cannot be removed by this method.
10. Oxidation reactions happen when chemicals in the food are
exposed to oxygen in the air. In natural conditions, animal and plant
tissues contain their own antioxidants but in foods, these natural
systems break down and oxidation is bound to follow.
Oxidation of food is a destructive process, causing loss of
nutritional value and changes in chemical composition.
Oxidation of fats and oils leads to rancidity.
12. Humidity Indicating Cards
•Humidity Indicating cards (HIC) are used to indicate humidity of a closed
environment/packing.
•Humidity Indicating Cards help monitor desiccant activity and are ideal for use with
desiccants in any application where moisture control is critical.
•These can be applicable to Pharmaceutical Industries, Electronics packaging, Optical
instrument packaging, Preservation packaging for sensitive components, Bulk packaging etc.
•Humidity indicator cards are designed to meet standards set forth by military agencies and
electronic/semiconductor companies, such as Mil-Spec and JEDEC respectively.
•Environmentally preferable: free of halogens and heavy metals.
•There are various indications available like 30-40%, 5-10%, 5-15%, 20-40%, 10-60% etc,
they can also be customized.
•For example if all of the dots are deep blue on a card which is a 10%- 60% card than you
can be assured that the humidity in that container is below 10%.
