The documentary investigates a man who has no alibi and the host goes in depth to find the truth. Various camera techniques are discussed that set the mood and pace, including interviews, informal locations, fast-paced music, voiceovers paired with contrasting visuals, and quick shot changes. The title scene uses bold text and a stormy coast to set a dark, serious tone for the documentary.
1. Unsolved: The man with no alibi
Textual Analysis 3:
• A documentary that investigates into a man who has no
alibi, and the host goes into depth to find out the truth.
• The camera movement used within this documentary
creates the mood that I want to be able to portray and also
the pace of editing.
2. In this mid-shot, it is a short clip from an
interview further in the show, that has
been placed in the intro, which I will
incorporate into my documentary as it is
encaptivating.
This shot is also well lit and shot in an
informal location which gives the look of
authenticity and reality.
In the background of this shot is also fast
paced music, adding to the suspension of
the documentary and pace of editing
used.
3. In this mid-shot, the host is doing
something completely off topic to the
documentary but doing a voiceover to
keep the audience interacting with the
content on-screen.
The shots here quickly switch between
different angles of the host running
along the beach with the voiceover, at
some points she is at the far corner of
the screen, so the shot is not focused
on her.
In my documentary I would like to do a
similar thing with having something
completely contrasting with what's
being said on the voiceover.
4. All three of these shots occurred within 1
second of screen-time and matched when
the soundtrack became more fast paced.
This creates a more dramatic effect and
allows for more different types of shots to
be used within the first few minutes, which
would be useful for me to use in my
documentary to be able to meet the brief
as full as possible.
5. In this title scene the name of the
documentary is in clear bold writing in
the bottom right with the coast to be
the main focus.
The stormy looking weather tells the
audience that the show is going to be
dark and not fun which sets the tone
really well and could be useful to do
the same with mine, by having the
tone set within the title sequence.
The shot is also a time-lapse that
creates a nice effect, watching the
clouds move away and once the scene
finishes it fades out black and into the
beginning of the documentary. I need
to add the correct transition to give the
effect that I want in mine.
