It is the R/C that own private
property and as such they want to
             protect it

  The R/C must exercise Social
     Control over the W/C
It is important to realise that Crime is a
Natural Product of Capitalist Society
     – Capitalism is ‘Crimogenic’

This is a threat to the R/C
Social Control of the W/C

The R/C get to define what crime means. This means
that they can use their definition of crime to create
laws that protect their private property
Other Laws protect Private Property in
Different ways:

Laws are therefore not an expression of
Value Consensus (as in Functionalism) but
a reflection of R/C Dominant Ideology.
Althusser (1971) argues that these laws are
enforced and legitimized through both Repressive
State Apparatus & Ideological State
Apparatus.
It is important to remember that Crime & Deviance is spread
fairly evenly through the class structure.
However, it seems like the W/C commit more crime simply
because the R/C get to dictate the definition of crime as well as
                           create laws.
It seems like the W/C commit more crime also
                because of three main reasons:
> Being a Structuralist
Theory, macro-influences > They ignore laws that
on crime are highlighted protect everyone – not just
e.g. The economy the R/C

                            > Crime occurs in types of
 > Draw attention to Law societies – not just
Makers as well as Law capitalism
 Breakers

                                 > Deterministic
> Look at social control
agencies and the changing > Suggests crime is only
definitions of crime committed for economic
                               gain
