1. ‘In what way does your
media product use,
develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real
media products’
Evaluation pt2
2. Conventions
Possible conventions;
● Pastel/faded colours
● Ripped jeans and old clothes [retro]
● Smoking/graphic/adult content
● Close ups
● Tracking shots
● Powerful meaning within narrative
● Lots of fast cuts
● Lip syncing
Conventions I’ve used;
Pastel/faded colours
Ripped jeans and old clothes [retro]
Close ups
Tracking shots
Powerful meaning within narrative
3. Developing
conventions
I’ve developed the convention of
powerful meaning within the narrative
by adding multiple controversial
subjects within one video;
➔ LGBTQ+
➔ Asian culture
➔ Child abuse
➔ Depression/suicide
I think this makes my music video that
much more relatable and thought-
provoking to the audience, and sheds
light on topics that should have more
4. Developing
conventions
Another convention I developed was
how they use tracking shots.
I used quite a few tracking shots
throughout my music video, but also
incorporating match on action.
I did this so that the audience felt more
involved with the character, like they
themselves were in the story watching
over her.
5. Challenging
conventions
I challenged the lip syncing convention
that is very common in this genre, and
in majority of music videos.
I think that by not adding that element,
it seems more like a movie than a music
video, which makes it seem like the
artist is telling a story to the audience
[not just promoting their music].
By adding lip syncing I feel it would
have broken up my narrative too much,
so I’m happy that I didn’t include it,
instead having the performance
element of guitar at the beginning.
6. Challenging
conventions
A lot of videos in this genre include
imagery of smoking or drinking, but I
think that including things like that
makes them seem ‘okay’ or ‘cool’ to
some viewers, since it’s their favourite
artist etc.
So I tried to keep my music video as
innocent and non-graphic as possible,
leaving it up to interpretation what is
happening so as to not make it viewable
to younger audiences.
7. Challenging
conventions
Finally, i didn’t include the artist [or
someone who could have pretended to
be the artist] in this video, instead using
two females behind a male voice.
I did this because it’s more irregular to
have females acting for a male artist
and vis versa, as they are usually
matching what their audience would
expect.
But I think that teen girls [for this topic]
are underrepresented, even though
this would be around the age they are
having the most difficulties. So I did this
so the audience would better relate to
the video.
