As many universities transitioned to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, the distance learning environment presented various accessibility challenges for deaf and hard-of-hearing students (DHH). In art and design higher education programs, the transition from face-to-face learning to virtual learning is difficult for students in general, and even more difficult for students with hearing loss. Art and design educators have explored approaches to effectively compensate for these challenges and optimize the distance learning experiences for DHH students. This paper aims to investigate these challenges and attempts to explore the international best practices in distance education for deaf learners. Action research is used as a methodology to guide the professional development of art and design educators on ways to refine and hone their online teaching approaches. Ten DHH students (5 Males and 5 females) participated in the action research for the needs of this study. Their challenges, experiences, preferences, needs and artworks were analysed in an attempt to optimize their online learning outcomes and provide recommendations that will lead to the implementation of effective teaching strategies and the design of appropriate e-learning environments for hearing-impaired art and design students. The preliminary findings of the study revealed that the main challenges DHH students and their instructors faced were communication barriers and misinterpretation of tasks, which led to difficulties in fulfilling the course intended outcomes. The recommendations formulated on the basis of the findings are to adapt the intended learning outcomes and teaching approaches to optimize the learning experiences of the DHH students.

шкільної програми;
- стимулювання найбільш активних та здібних учнів;
- подолання психологічних бар’єрів у спілкуванні з носіями мови;
конкретний життєвий досвід дітей;
- обмін педагогічним досвідом на міжнародному рівні;
інструментарію;
- культурний обмін;

Mary Newhouse, Linnea Bergren-Hunschen i Natalia

English Language Camp is not an ordinary camp. The learning experience is
built on a foundation of friendship. Fs well as to know, trust and love each other,
we also learn the language. We did not only learn every day practical English, we
also learnt the language of culture and the language of friendship.
The basic method of language that is used is the method students used as a
child: exposure to language in various contexts and good modeling without a
strong focus on accuracy. Students have the opportunity to learn English in the
contest of singing, recreation, drama and a variety of other methods. It’s important
to remember that a language is learnt only when it is understood. Teachers use
various techniques in their language lessons that do not heavily focus on grammar
and memorization, but on authentic, meaningful and purposeful communication
within various engaging activities. Then each day there is review to reinforce
learning. It helps students improve their conversational English skills and better
understand each others’ culture.

Conductor: Dear friends, the camps’ marathon is successfully developing
and we are glad to greet you at the opening ceremony of the ESL, Drama and
Dance Camps.
As we are the representatives of two states we start our meeting with the
anthems of Ukraine and the USA.

Conductor: Hello!
Conductor: Where are you hurrying? We’ll you stay with us?
Conductor: What for? What are you doing here? It looks like a cool party. I
love such things!
Conductor: Vitya, if you spend some days with us, you won’t be upset. Last
week we had already had the American-Ukrainian Music Camp where many pretty
girls participated. Maybe there were some of your girlfriends. Oh, by the way, they
sent us their greetings.
(Songs by the girls’ choir are performed)
What do you think? It’s fine, isn’t it?
Conductor: Sure. I think it will be great to be with you. But what will I do
there? Sing?
Conductor: Oh, no. You have a variety of choice. You can improve your
language skills in ESL Camp, or you can become a professional actor in five days
working with Dale Rott in Drama Camp and you can strengthen your muscles in
Dance camp.
Conductor: It would be interesting to see the leaders of these camps.
Conductor: With great pleasure. Let’s invite
- the leader of the ESL Camp for young kids, enthusiastic and impulsive Mary
Newhouse;
- the leader of the ESL Youth Camp, industrious and inventive Cathy
Johnson;
- the leader of Drama Camp, witty, hardworking and untiring Dale Rott;
- the leader of Dance Camp, charming Debora Bestland.
(American leaders greet the participants and introduce their teams)
Conductor: According to the ancient tradition Ukrainians meet their guests
with bread and salt. So the Ukrainian leaders – Maya Zuyeva, Luba Denisyk,
Olena Vertiporokh and Larisa Pavlenko will present you our traditional Ukrainian
Kharavays.
(Song “Green Rye”is being performed)

Conductor: Wow! It’s difficult to make a right choice. But I have a night in
my disposal. As far as I remember the proverb says “Fresh for the morrow; take
counsel with your pillow; sleep on it”.
In fact, I’ve already made a right choice. There’re four variants of spending
the time in the camps, but I have the fifth one. My elder brother has been the
participant of the ESL Camp for two years and he has told me about a unique
woman who is the soul and inspiration of all the camps. It’s incomparable Linda
Wicklund. I’d like to work with her. Let’s greet her with applause and flowers.
(He presents flowers)
Conductor: We need blessings for successful work of our camps. Let’s
invite Pastor Victor Deyev to encourage us.
(Pastor speaks)
Conductor: Let’s finish our ceremony with the song “We Shall Overcome”
OPENING PLAY FOR ESL 2005
The scene is a mysterious symbolic scene.
The Author enters with a book (large book, antique look) and walks to the
table. Places the book on the table. Sits. Looks at the audience. Surveys the
audience. Bows head in hands. After a 1000-5 count, head rises, opens the book,
looks at a page, looks at audience, slowly turns the book toward the audience. The
page background is small print, but the word TIME is reprinted several times in
different large size and medium size letters. Maybe different colors. It could seem
like the words TIME are special words in sentences. BUT, after reflecting on the
size of the auditorium. The word TIME needs to be HUGE for the people in the
back row.

30
Narrator: (Enters. Speaks to audience.) You look puzzled. In your mind you
ask questions; Who is this person? What is that book? What does the word time
mean?
A prophet. A seer? A storyteller?
A storybook? A History book? A science Book? A Moral book? A religious
book? The book could be history and religious.
Narrator: Today we live by time. We rise at a certain time. We eat at a
certain time. We go to school at a certain time. We sleep at a certain time. But this
time is earthly limited time. Earthly limited time began when the Eternal Creator,
created the heaven and the earth. The stories of the creation of the heavens and the
earth are in a book called the Bible.
(During the following Narrator's explanation the Author has been reading
the pages. At specific times during the Narrator's explanation the Author's finger
points to the word TIME as a method of highlighting/emphasis on certain Narrator
s point, i.e. when dates and word “years” are sated.)
Narrator: The Bible is one book, one history and one story. Behind the
thousands of stories in the Bible there is God, the Creator of time and history.
Eternity is before earthly time and eternity is after earthly time. TIME is in
between.
Narrator: The Bible tells the story of God's people and his love for us. The
Bible, written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, was partially translated into Old
Church Slavonic in the 9th-10th century AD, primarily for church use, and in this
form, together with Christian doctrine, made its way from Bulgaria to KvivanRus'.
The Bible was written over a period of 1600 years by 40 authors who were inspired
by God. The Bible is God’ s written revelation of his will for humanity. Copies of
the Old Testament have been found in Israel that were written 135 years before the
birth of Jesus, These ancient scrolls are accurate and historically support the fact
that the Bible is true and not a fairy tale.

31
The Author replaces the book on the table and turns more pages. This
movement is to direct the attention from
The Narrator to the Author. The Narrator turns to focus on the Author's
movements.
The Author turns the book towards the audience. The word ADAM and EVE
are in large size print. In the background in smaller print, again to emphasize
ADAM and EVE are part of a story, or part of information. ADAM and EVE
words are sometimes together and sometimes separate. This would indicate the
story in the Bible when Eve was tempted and then Adam enters the situation.
ADAM and EVE words may not appear as . frequently as the word TIME appeared
on the first scene/page. Maybe TIME could appear with ADAM and EVE
Narrator: God not only started the clock of history as creator of the world,
he made the first human being, Adam. It is written in the Bible that God made
Adam in "His image". God made all of us in his image with the ability to think and
communicate and creatively use our brain and skills in many areas. We have many
examples from Ukraine history. Mikola Lysenko a famous Ukrainian composer
lived in the 19th
century. He understood that only God could provide what we need.
When he wrote the Prayer for Ukraine, he asked for the gift of grace for all
Ukrainian people. Listen to the words;
“O great and only God, keep our Ukraine safe... send all of the generosity of
grace unto our people."
Dmitri Bortniansky was another famous Ukrainian Christian composer who
lived at the same time as Mozart and Beethoven. Listen to how he praised God our
creator.
"We praise thee, O God, we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud: the Heavens, and all the Powers therein."
TARAS SCHEVCHENKO, the most famous Ukrainian poet, has several
poems dealing with belief in God.

Prayer III calls for forgiveness and love. When one knows how he suffered
and was tortured under the Tsar, it is truly a Biblical concept he calls for in the
poem,
"For those that have done wrong to me.
No longer do I fetters ask,
Nor dungeons deep.
“ For hands that faithful toil for good
Send Thy instructions' gracious aid,
And Holy strength.
Fortender ones pure in heart
Do thou, Qh God, their virtue save
With angel's guard.
For all Thy children on this earth May they Thy wisdom know alike, In
brother love."
YAROSLAV THE WISE, a play, was written by Ivan Kocherha. Yaroslav
ruled 1019-1054. The play contains prayers to God, numerous statements of
reliance on God. Comparisons are made with the Biblical David. David always
asked God when, how, if, he should go ta battle against the Amorites.Yaroslav
does the same.
Narrator: All these men understood that they were made in God's image
with the freedom to choose a life path that was guided by their love for God.
(Author slams shut the Book. Places it on the table. Turns back to audience.)
Narrator: BUT, there were men who choose a path guided by Satan. Such
men as Hitler, Stalin, Osama Bin Lauden choose a life path destroying the plan of
God. Disobedience , hate, murder, stealing, rape, all these sins came into earthly
TIME. All these sins in earthly time blocked out the eternal salvation in God's
eternal plan.
(Author turns around. Opens book. Turns book toward audience. ON one
page in huge letters is EMANUEL. On the opposite page is GOD WITH US!)
(Author picks up book and starts to walk toward the four selected students).

Narrator: Emmanuel! Emmanuel means God with us. The only way God
could save the human race from all the evil things people were doing, which we
call sin-was to come to earth to teach us about sin and forgiveness.
(Author picks up book. He walks to the four selected students. Opens book to
a page which has only the words TIME. ADAM. EMMANUEL . Shows the four

God himself became a man so that we might know what to think when we
think of God. His appearance on earth is the central event of all history. The 1st
part of the Bible sets the stage and the 2nd
part of the Bible describes it. The whole
Bible is built around the story of Jesus and it was written so we might believe,
understand, and follow him. The Bible says that all the bad things we do separate
us from God.
This week we will learn who Jesus is. People around the world have
different
Opinions about the question, Who is JeSUS? (Narrator addresses the four
students.) Who do
you think Jesus is?
(Four students explain who Jesus is using the words TIME, ADAM and
Emmanuel)
Narrator : TIME ! ADAM! EMMANUEL! Three important words to
remember! These words are all connected to tell us the story of God in the Bible.
For hundreds of years Biblical writers predicted Jesus would come to earth. In a
small stable in Bethlehem EMMANUEL was born. Let's go back 2000 years and
begin with EMMANUEL and his birth.

This story in art form takes place in my Laos homeland in 1975 when
communism took over our country and in Thailand - where we fled to escape
communist oppression and remained for five years under adverse conditions. In the
vivid embroidery you see Laos located to the north and Thailand to the south
separated by the Mekhong River. The airplane, bombing and soldiers firing guns
represents the action of the communist warfare against Hmong tribes people who
farmed high in the mountains of Laos. Being a people of strong independence and
love of family we had no-choice but to flee from whatever would limit our
freedom, strong sense of family tradition and personal initiative. It was a long, hard
journey down the mountains and to the river, but we continued for weeks as we
experienced hunger, danger of being spied upon by communists, sickness, and
often times death of family members. Food was so scarce that we sometimes dug
roots from the ground to use as a source of nourishment. People died from
sickness, hunger and even bombs which were dropped whenever escapees were
spotted.

Sometimes family members were shot and killed while the rest had to keep
moving least they be killed too as was the case of my own sister's baby. The horror
stories can never be fully captured in any media as they actually occurred. I have
frequent recollections of my brother screaming and crying as we were in danger of
being hit by gun shots so often.
As families got to the river they had to craft their boats out of whatever
material was available. You can see us crossing the river on boats and canoes made
from bamboo trees. Cutting the trees was noisy so most of the work needed to be
done at night. As careful as we were to cross the river at night, some boats were
shot down with more people lost through drowning.
When we got to the shores of Thailand we first needed to register as
refugees. Some of us were given refugee status while others were driven back.
Thailand government could not have realized what it was like in Laos and from
what we were trying to escape. It feared there would not be enough resources in
their country to take care of so many estranged neighbors.
You can see soldiers in Thailand whose job it was to control our lives and
keep us in subjection at the refugee camp. We were given two square miles on
which to build our own housing units which were to accommodate some 20,000
refugees. We lived there from 1975-1980 in an atmosphere of control, oppression,
and fear because of much cruel treatment by the soldiers. They were hungry for
what little food we had and tried to get whatever money or possessions they could
from us.
We were living in a life-threatening environment with not enough food
which caused a great deal of sickness. There were no hospitals, no schools, no
sanitation provisions, and no space to grow food and raise animals. By way of
contrast, the embroidery story depicts the difference in lifestyle between the
Thailand citizen and those of us living in the refugee camp.
We want you to know and appreciate our story of survival, our struggles and
frustrations, what we as Hmong people have lost and why. Our embroidery art will
help us to remember and to teach our children. It will let you know our story and of

• After assuming the throne as King, Henry was married
to the Princess of Spain [Catherine of Aragon] for 17
years [she had been married to Henry’s elder
deceased brother, Arthur]
• But, Catherine gave Henry no male heir [and besides,
Henry had now fallen in love with young Anne Boleyn].
• So, Henry claimed Leviticus 20:21 gave him grounds
for an annulment “if a man takes his brother’s wife, it is
impurity.”
• His wife, Catherine may have countered with
Deuteronomy 25:5 which says that if two brothers live
together and one dies, the surviving brother must
produce a male offspring for the widow

• Pope Clement VII decided [for
political reasons] not to grant
an annulment to Henry.
• So, Henry broke from the
Church in Rome and established The Church of
England in 1533.
• Henry VIII and much of England still practiced a faith
that was very similar to Catholicism but the head of
the Church was now the King instead of the Pope.
Even so, by 1540, all Catholic property in Britain was
taken by the government.
• Loyalty to the king as head of the church was
required. Those that refused were executed
[Sir Thomas More for one].

Ireland – Colony of Great Britain
• By the early 1800s; most of Ireland was
Catholic and most of Britain was Church of
England. So, unfortunately, there were
prejudicial laws that were set up in Ireland that
favored the few British that lived there.
• Catholics could not own land that was
not already in their family [nor could
they lease or rent].
• Land owned when a father died had to be
passed down equally amongst only his sons.
The property game
• So, let’s see how these laws would play out after only 4 generations.
>> Supplies: scissors, 6 sided dice, paper [your farm land].
• Start out with two property owners [2 husband and 2 wife –
volunteers]. Roll dice for male children 1=1, 2=2, 3=3, 4=4,
5 or 6 = none. Cut up paper [property] so that it is fairly equal among
male children in your family. If no male children,
the land goes to the British.
• Each male child can now choose a wife or one will be chosen for you
[past generation can now sit down]. They now all roll to find out the
number of male children, divide property, choose a wife.
Remember; no male children, your land goes to the government.
• Do this two more times for a total of 4 generations. Over the course
of roughly 100 years, let us see how much land each family now has.

Ireland by 1840
• Some of these laws were reversed in 1829; but by
then, although 80% of Ireland was Catholic, only 7%
of the land was owned by Catholics.
• The British landlords were now allowed to rent
portions of their land to the Irish. Rent was very high
for tenants and taxes were high for Irish landowners.
• If an Irish family was unable to pay rent or taxes, the
family was forced to leave their land immediately.
• Most Irish that were able to pay taxes and rent could
only afford a one room home.
• Their profit margin was so small that only the most
fortunate Irish could afford a piglet or calf once a year.
The crop that grew the best in Ireland’s
damp and rocky soil was the potato.
• The British Landlords that owned the greater portion of
the land used their fields for livestock and grain.
• The smaller plots of land that the Irish owned or rented
had to primarily be used to feed their family.
• Potatoes were a good choice to feed a family. 17%
starch, 2% protein, 1% minerals, and 80% water, with
the protein in the layer next to the skin -- which is why
we should eat the skins.
• Most Irish ate between 6-9 pounds of potatoes each
day.

of the potato crop in many parts of
Europe. Ireland’s crop did not seem
effected. But in 1845, the fungus did
extend to Ireland.
• By 1847, Ireland was in the grips of a
famine as most of the Irish were
dependent upon potatoes and the potato
crop was almost entirely destroyed.

The Famine
• The “blight” or fungus suddenly left in 1850 but
by then nearly a million of Irish had died of
starvation and sickness.
• Emigration – in the end, the Great Hunger left
many Irish with only two choices: stay and
starve or leave and live.
• By 1854, more than a million Irish had made the
journey across the Atlantic Ocean and chosen
to become American citizens. In 1881, Irish
immigration to the U.S. was 4 million
[for that year alone].
A “Better” Life in America
• As with most immigrants, the easiest jobs to
obtain quickly were the lowest paid and most
dangerous.
• Even though most Irish came from the rural areas of
Ireland – many chose city life in the U.S. to protect /
adapt to some of the misperceptions & prejudices they
experienced in America.
• 3/4th of Irish immigrants chose to live in the city. One
famous Irish neighborhood in N.Y. was called “Hell’s
Kitchen”.
• America, in the 1850s was largely non-Catholic.
Before the famine there were only 600,000 Catholics
in America. By 1860 there were over 3 million. As a
religious minority, the Irish faced a considerable
amount of prejudice. Many referred to them as drunk,
lazy and criminal.

Typical Work
• The Irish had one advantage
over other immigrants, in that
they spoke the language and
could quickly be hired as
servants of the wealthy.
• The Irish also found work
building canals and railroads.
This may not sound like a bad
job but canals often went
through hot and humid swamp
lands and railways require
much use of high explosives
to go through hills. Workers
were expected to labor for 12-
15 hours each day.
• By the late 1800s many Irish
had also entered into public
service as firemen, police
officers and school teachers.

2.3.3. UKRAINIAN IMMIGRATION
Why They Left: In the 18th century, Russia divvied up the Ukraine with
Austria. Russia, for its part, tried to eradicate Ukrainian culture and prohibit the
use of the Ukrainian language. Immigrants who left between 1875 and 1914 were
fleeing Russian persecution and Austrian impoverishment.
After the Russian civil war and a Polish invasion crushed the Ukraine's bid
for independence (1917-1920), Ukrainians escaped the new repressive measures
leveled against their nationalism. A quarter of a century later, many Ukrainians in
Nazi camps chose to come to America rather than return to their Soviet-held
homeland.
Where They Settled: Most Ukrainians settled in Pennsylvania, in the coal
areas, in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, the mining regions of West
Virginia, the industrial areas of Ohio, and the textile centers of Massachusetts and
Connecticut. Smaller agricultural colonies settled in Wisconsin, North Dakota, and
Hawaii.
By 1914 there were 350,000 Ukrainians and their descendants in America.
After W.W.I, another 125,000 Ukrainians came to the U.S. Today, there are about
2 million Americans of Ukrainian descent.

After W.W.I Ukrainians uprooted by Polish and Russian occupation. Many
were professionals and political fugitives whose attempts to gain Ukrainian
independence had been harshly crushed. But this period of immigration was short-
lived, because U.S. immigration quotas went into effect. An average of only 96
Ukrainians a year were allowed to enter the country from 1930 until W.W. II.
The last wave lasted from 1945 to the mid-1950s, when Ukrainian refugees
came to America from Germany, with the aid of Ukrainian and Catholic relief
agencies. Again, most of these immigrants were professionals, skilled laborers, or
educated farmers.
The Ukrainians brought to America a rich religious and cultural heritage.
Ukrainian Catholicism is particularly strong, with its attendant relief and
educational societies. Easter egg painting, an old Ukrainian tradition, has become a
popular, recognized American art form.
Famous Ukrainian Americans: Actress Sandra Dee (Alexandra Zhuk); actors
Nick Adams (Adamschock), Jack Palance (Palaniuk), and John Hodiak; football
great Bronislaw "Bronko" Nagurski; hockey players Terry Sawchuk and Bill

2.4.1. VALENTINE’S DAY
Valentine Day Trivia
In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February
14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite decorations on the spoons. The
decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!"
In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a
young man.
If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him.
In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see
who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for
one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other
people to know how you are feeling.
Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, As you twist
the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the
person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.
Cupid is used on many Valentine cards.
According to tradition, Cupid is a little winged boy armed with a bow and
several arrows. The arrows signify emotion, love and desire. He aims the arrows at
humans causing them to fall in love. In Greek times he was known as Eros – son of
Aphrodite – the Goddess of Beauty and Love. To the Romans, he was known as
Cupid, son of Venus.
According to Catholic history – 4 priests named Valentine have been killed
on February 14th
25 % of all cards sold are Valentine cards
Narrator – We have a famous guest with us today and we are very pleased
to have him here. Could you please introduce yourself?
My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was
long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I

51
didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my
feelings.
Narrator – Why did you feel and the others feel that way?
Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join.
Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their
wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This
made Claudius furious.
Narrator – So what happened?
He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would
not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages.
Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I
certainly wasn't going to support that law!
Narrator – What exactly is your position or job?
Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favorite activities was to marry
couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing
marriage ceremonies – secretly, of course. It was really quit exciting. Imagine a
small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper
the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.
Narrator – That must have been very exciting yet very dangerous.
One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I
was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I
used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.
I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Narrator- What?
Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me.
They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that
they, too, believed in love.
One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father
allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She
helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring
the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages.

52
Narrator -What finally happened?
On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her
friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."
I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on
Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now,
every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about
love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember
how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they know that
love can't be beaten!
Narrator – Thank you so much, Bishop Valentine, for being here with us
today.
