Plains zebras live in mixed herds of up to 100 individuals and have three distinct types distinguished by their stripe patterns. They graze on tough grasses and underground plant parts and can travel over 100 miles in dry seasons to find food. Plains zebras have a ranked social structure usually consisting of a lead mare, several other females and their young, and a stallion that brings up the rear for protection.
