From time to time everybody needs to take notes; they may be attending a seminar, a meeting or perhaps supervising groups of students.
Taking minutes can be a both incredibly boring and ineffective exercise and often when one goes back to the notes months later, making sense of them can sometimes be difficult. In recent years memory techniques, or mnemonics as they are also called, have become increasingly popular. One of the most famous is the memory palace. In essence, by creating a link to a positive memory of a physical place one organizes the new knowledge and information in recognizable locations. Mind-mapping is another, also well known, way of doing remembering differently.
In this workshop we are going to use similar, but completely different, techniques to make note-taking more effective, more memorable and hopefully more fun. The method uses creativity and naïvistic art to create notes that both grasp the essence of what is being talked about and visually illustrate and question the note-taker’s subjective take on the matter. The aim is not for the notes to be beautiful or even artistic in the aesthetical sense; the aim is to use recognizable and general symbols, objects and icons that will help trigger and re-trigger the meaning being captured in the notes – even after a long time.
Before attending please prepare a two-minute talk about one of the following:

Task unit 5 basic 5
This document provides instructions for a task that asks students to choose important childhood or teenage memories and record them using a mind map and Voicethread. Students are asked to organize their memories in a mind map, complement it with memories from school or other topics, design their mind map using an online tool and save it as an image, then upload the image to Voicethread along with a voice recording talking about their memories while using the mind map as a visual aid. Classmates will then provide oral or written comments in the Voicethread.

Ummu Nauffer created an e-portfolio that helped explain herself in depth and taught her how to better communicate with others. She found the process and tools used to be interesting and enjoyed learning something new each day. Overall, she appreciated the course and felt it was a roller coaster that helped her become a unique individual. The document then provides five ways to acknowledge success, such as taking a moment of silence, celebrating in a unique way, taking pictures, keeping a list of accomplishments, and sharing successes with others.
Development 6 and 7, research projects and pitching ideas
Students will present their research projects to the teacher one by one. While presenting, other students will draw posters advertising potential ideas for their upcoming Junior Cert Action Project event. Next week, students will vote on which project to pursue, though the teacher maintains veto power. The homework is to complete a reflective journal page and the skills and objectives focus on being creative and examining research projects while pitching more action project ideas through posters.

Kristin Wade wrote and illustrated a children's book for her senior project. She was inspired by a story her grandfather told about his dog Flip chasing a squirrel through the house. She interviewed her grandfather to get the full story details. Wade then went through the lengthy process of storyboarding, sketching illustrations, inking them, coloring them digitally, and publishing the book online. Through this project, she learned she is prone to procrastination but also has determination to complete projects she is passionate about. While the process was taxing, she enjoyed turning the family story into a published book.
