The achievement gap of disadvantaged students has always been large, and is still widening. Even more now, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Parental involvement is seen as an important strategy for closing this gap. The ultimate objective is to expand the academic and social capacities of students, especially those of disadvantaged backgrounds determined by ethnic minority/immigrant origin and low socioeconomic status. This article focuses on possible roles of parents in education and aims at answering two questions: (1) What types of parental involvement can be discerned? and (2) What are the effects of parental activities on their children’s attainment? To answer both questions, a review of the literature was conducted, and a synthesis of the results from twelve meta-analyses was performed. The review pointed to a considerable diversity in parental involvement typologies, classifications, roles, forms, and activities. Nevertheless, they can be ordered along the lines of just a few perspectives, namely locus (at home/at school), style (formal/informal), action (active/passive), and actor (parent/student/school). From the synthesis of the meta-analyses it can be concluded that the average effect of involvement on attainment is small. In addition to many positive effects there are also substantial numbers of null and even negative effects. The type of involvement with the strongest effect appeared to be parents having high aspirations and expectations for their child. No differences in effects of involvement on attainment according to ethnic/immigrant and social background could be established. Prudence is called for, however, as there are many limitations to studying parental involvement in a reliable and valid way.
Grade retention is a strategy for the remediation of learning or developmental delays. Students who cannot keep up with their peers or do not meet a predefined level repeat the same grade once again and by doing so have an extra year to get at the level that is needed to successfully manage the next grade. There are considerable doubts as regards the usefulness and effectiveness of retaining grades. Studies conclude that in the short term retaining grades may have a positive effect on academic achievement, but that this gain disappears in the longer term.

Using icons is a great way to add visuals to your presentation. There are many ways to get icons online, some are even free. But if you need a specific icon that you can’t find or if you want a special spin to your icon (color, shadow etc) – you can use PowerPoint’s great (and somewhat hidden) “Merge Shapes” commands to create your own icons.
Using these commands you can combine basic shapes into other shapes. You can union and subtract shapes. You can intersect and combine. All while still working natively inside PowerPoint. Once you have created an icon you can change the color, filling and add shadows as needed.

At a special event to launch findings from Rounds 1 to 4 of the Young Lives survey, Professor Jo Boyden, Director of Young Lives gave an overview of findings to date, focusing on how a multi-disciplinary, multi-country study like Young Lives enables us to view trends over time, not just in India but also across four diverse countries. Child development and economic development are mutually reinforcing, she argued. We have seen a decade of growth, with reductions in poverty levels and improvement in infrastructure and service access (particularly primary enrolment) across all our study countries. The question we must now address is how we deal with entrenched inequalities, which need integrated measures across government departments to invest in child development.

A new policy paper, No more excuses: Provide education to all forcibly displaced people, jointly produced by the GEM Report and UNHCR shows the scale of the education needs for refugees and internally displaced children and youth.
The paper calls for countries and their humanitarian and development partners to urgently ensure that those forcibly displaced are included in national education plans and to collect better data to monitor their education status and progress. It reveals new data showing that only 50% of refugee children are in primary school and 25% of refugee adolescents are in secondary school.

Assessment of Socio-Cultural Constraints On Girls’ Success in Education: The ...paperpublications3
Abstract:In countries, such as Ethiopia, girls are at a disadvantageous position in terms of accessing and succeeding in their education. The objective for this study is to examine the socio-cultural factors affecting girl’s education. The scope of the study focuses on one Primary School where female students are enrolled and limited to grades 4 - 8 and in the age group of 12-18. The sample size of this particular study was 40 female students and 10 respondents for focus group discussion. The respondents were selected using the probability sampling technique and systematic random sampling method.
The findings of this study revealed that girls living in the study area had faced many socio- cultural problems hampering their enrollment and their success in their education. The perception of the community about female education, long distance of the school, early marriage, abduction and lack of role model in their village, as well as, in their school are the major factors that hinders girls’ enrolment and success.
Finally, it was suggested that the collaboration of the community, teachers, school leaders, parents, government and non-government organizations are very important to increase the participation and success of female’s students in the study area.

Aunque ciertos indicadores han mejorado, existen graves brechas de aprendizaje entre niños de diferentes grupos socioeconómicos, que empeoran con madre indígena, y poco educada. Tales desigualdades se evidencian apenas desde los 5 años de edad.

Global Initiative on Out-of-school children: Central and Eastern Europe/ CISUNICEF Education
Despite high enrollment rates, many children in the region of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CEE/CIS), drop out of school early and many graduate without learning basic literacy and numeracy skills. According to the latest study published by the Out of School Children Initiative, 2.5 million children of basic school age and 1.6 million children of pre-primary school age are out of school in the region. Additionally, many more children from the most marginalized communities are excluded from national data collection procedures and thus are invisible.

El lunes 10 de octubre de 2016, Alan Sánchez, investigador principal de Niños del Milenio / Young Lives de Grade, presentó el estudio "Competencias psicosociales y conductas de riesgo en el Perú" en el III Workshop: Victimología del Desarrollo, Evaluación del Riesgo de Violencia y Genderización de las Políticas de Seguridad Ciudadana y Justicia Criminal en el Perú organizado por la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, la Universidad de Lima y la Sociedad Internacional de Criminología (International Society of Criminology).
Los resultados señalan que las competencias psicosociales, la autoestima y las altas aspiraciones, contribuirían a prevenir conductas de riesgo.

Vanessa Rojas, investigadora de Niños del Milenio / Young Lives, de GRADE, expuso el estudio realizado junto con Gabriela Guerrero: "Comprendiendo las experiencias de violencia de niñas y niños en sus hogares: evidencia cualitativa de Niños del Milenio / Young Lives en Perú", en la conferencia "Adolescencia, juventud y género: generando conocimiento para el cambio", en la Universidad de Oxford #YLgenderyouth realizada el 8 y 9 de septiembre de 2016. La investigación es parte de un estudio de Unicef que abarca a niñas y niños de Peru, Vietnam, Zimbabwe e Italy.
Alan Sánchez, investigador principal de Niños del Milenio / Young Lives, presentó el estudio "El acceso a la Educación en países en desarrollo: un análisis de datos longitudinales para India, Vietnam y Perú" en un desayuno de trabajo realizado el martes 23 de agosto en el auditorio de GRADE. Luego de la exposición, los comentarios estuvieron a cargo del Viceministro de Gestión Pedagógica, Flavio Figallo Rivadeneyra.
Ante una audiencia de al menos 30 asistentes del sector gubernamental, académico, así como de la sociedad civil y de la cooperación internacional, Sánchez mostró los hallazgos del estudio hecho en conjunto con Abhijeet Singh. Santiago Cueto, investigador principal de Niños del Milenio, de GRADE, dio la conferencia magistral: "Equidad en educación: El estudio Niños del Milenio" en la 2da Jornada de psicología educativa "De las teorías del aprendizaje a la praxis en la educación". La actividad fue organizada por la Facultad de Psicología de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos el viernes 15 de abril en el campus universitario.
El objetivo del estudio presentado por Cueto, muestra las trayectorias educativas de dos cohortes de niños, así como evidencia la calidad de la educación recibida, las oportunidades de aprendizaje y el rendimiento de dichos escolares.

Pero también revelan graves brechas entre grupos sociales socioeconómicos, que empeoran si la madre es indígena, y poco educada. Además, esas desigualdades se evidencian apenas desde los 5 años de edad (vocabulario receptivo). Entonces, el rendimiento de los niños a los 5 años predice su desempeño varios años después, reflejando un sistema educativo inequitativo.

Este Taller, co-organizado por el Gobierno de Brasil y Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), se realizó durante los días 7 y 8 de marzo en la capital, Brasilia. En el taller participaron profesionales de instituciones multilaterales, así como de entidades académicas y universidades de Brasil, Chile, el Perú y el Reino Unido. Dichos asistentes intercambiaron sus ideas y experiencias acerca de estudios longitudinales.

2. Young Lives study
Young Lives is an longitudinal study of childhood poverty which
follows 12,000 children in Vietnam, India, Ethiopia and Peru over
15 years. Young Lives follows two cohorts of children, the
younger cohort (born around 2001) and the older cohort (born
around 1994). There are four rounds of surveys carried out in
2002, 2006, 2009 and 2013.
The School Survey data was collected in schools attended by a
sub-sample of Young Lives children from the younger cohort
(children born in 2001) in order to have information about the
school, peers, teachers and principals. It gathered information
from the fourth grade Young Lives children, since most of the
Young Lives children were at this grade in 2010.

10. Conclusions and policy implications
- Gaps already exist at age 5. It is neccesary to target
children who are at risk in specific contexts (poverty,
minorities) and start early with multipurpose interventions.
- Primary schooling can make a difference for quality and
equity.
- Exclusion used to be linked with access; now it seems linked
with school resources and pegagogical processes.
- School segregation threats to the education of the poor.
Planning actions to improve achievements in areas where high
segregation and low socioeconomic status accumulate is
needed.
