Companies are expecting too
much from big data without
doing a good job with the data
they already have.
They don’t know how to
manage, analyze data for better
understanding.
 They first need to learn how to use the data
already embedded in their core operating
systems, much the way people must master
arithmetic before they tackle algebra. Until a
company learns how to use data and analysis to
support its operating decisions, it will not be in
a position to benefit from big data.
Evidence-based decision making always
leads the company to major improvements
in their business performance and they
tend to be more profitable.
So why don’t more
companies make better use of data and
analysis?
Because their management practices
haven’t caught up with their technology
platforms.
• They establish one undisputed source of
performance data.
• They give decision makers at all levels near-
real-time feedback.
• They consciously articulate their business
rules and regularly update them in response
to facts.
• They provide high-quality coaching to
employees who make decisions on a regular
basis.
• Use performance data from just one authorized
source.
• Getting everyone to accept the single source of
data may require appointing one executive to
oversee its management.
• Universal acceptance of one source of truth is the
first step in adopting a culture of evidence-based
decision making.
• People required to use data will take an active
interest in governance processes designed to
clarify data definitions and in learning how
information flows through the organization.
Regular scorecards clarify individual
accountability and provide consistent
feedback so that individuals know how they
are doing.
It focuses on results that individuals can
control; these are not summaries of the
company’s financial performance or stock
price.
“Business Rules Are RunningYour Company, and
You Don’t Even Know It”
Business rules align the actions of operational
decision makers with the strategic objectives of
the company. But that happens only when
relevant individuals understand the rules and
management regularly adjusts them in response
to new information.
• Continual coaching aims at improving the
performance of every individual.
• Teach them that they can do more to
improve customer satisfaction by watching
to make sure the customer uses the product
correctly and listening to what the
customer has to say than by demonstrating
how to use the product.
 Pick important repetitive work that includes some
discretion and some application of rules.
 Imagine how that work would be performed if
people had clear business rules and metrics, along
with all the data they needed to make good
decisions.
 Then assign coaches to those employees and
coach the coaches.

 Companies have to react faster on market
changes, act not only on present but also on
future challenges and take decisions that are out-
of-the-box. They can achieve this among others
by adopting the culture of evidence based decision
making and Big Data with proper analysis can help
your organisations with that.
 All employees should understand that
work performance is all about coming
together to serve a common purpose—
pleasing your clients or customers. It is
not a race. Managers may delegate
specific responsibilities to certain
employees, but each responsibility is
linked with the next in a ceaseless
effort to provide top quality products
and services.

You May Not Need Big Data After All

  • 2. Companies are expecting too much from big data without doing a good job with the data they already have. They don’t know how to manage, analyze data for better understanding.
  • 3.  They first need to learn how to use the data already embedded in their core operating systems, much the way people must master arithmetic before they tackle algebra. Until a company learns how to use data and analysis to support its operating decisions, it will not be in a position to benefit from big data.
  • 4. Evidence-based decision making always leads the company to major improvements in their business performance and they tend to be more profitable. So why don’t more companies make better use of data and analysis? Because their management practices haven’t caught up with their technology platforms.
  • 5. • They establish one undisputed source of performance data. • They give decision makers at all levels near- real-time feedback. • They consciously articulate their business rules and regularly update them in response to facts. • They provide high-quality coaching to employees who make decisions on a regular basis.
  • 6. • Use performance data from just one authorized source. • Getting everyone to accept the single source of data may require appointing one executive to oversee its management. • Universal acceptance of one source of truth is the first step in adopting a culture of evidence-based decision making. • People required to use data will take an active interest in governance processes designed to clarify data definitions and in learning how information flows through the organization.
  • 7. Regular scorecards clarify individual accountability and provide consistent feedback so that individuals know how they are doing. It focuses on results that individuals can control; these are not summaries of the company’s financial performance or stock price.
  • 8. “Business Rules Are RunningYour Company, and You Don’t Even Know It” Business rules align the actions of operational decision makers with the strategic objectives of the company. But that happens only when relevant individuals understand the rules and management regularly adjusts them in response to new information.
  • 9. • Continual coaching aims at improving the performance of every individual. • Teach them that they can do more to improve customer satisfaction by watching to make sure the customer uses the product correctly and listening to what the customer has to say than by demonstrating how to use the product.
  • 10.  Pick important repetitive work that includes some discretion and some application of rules.  Imagine how that work would be performed if people had clear business rules and metrics, along with all the data they needed to make good decisions.  Then assign coaches to those employees and coach the coaches.

They can achieve this among others by adopting the culture of evidence based decision making and Big Data with proper analysis can help your organisations with that.
  • 14.  All employees should understand that work performance is all about coming together to serve a common purpose— pleasing your clients or customers. It is not a race. Managers may delegate specific responsibilities to certain employees, but each responsibility is linked with the next in a ceaseless effort to provide top quality products and services.
