How your media product uses conventions of real magazines
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
My media product (magazine) uses conventions of a real media product on various occasions. As my task was to create
an almost real magazine replica which looked like it could be sold i used extra details such as including the barcode at
the bottom right in the right (terminal area). This was done in order to construct a realistic layout on the front cover of
my magazine.
The use of the barcode is essential as it evidently creates and states that this is a replica to a sold product.
Another use of developing conventions of real media products is the paw print in the strong fallow area
with ‘£1’ printed in the middle. This adds to the use of the barcode as it clearly shows that its a product to
be sold, which is almost shown on all media products for e.g. Price signs on CD’s, newspapers etc.
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
• My magazine only focus’ through the mainstream/rap genre of music. With that comes the large scaled vibe of ‘General
Dench’ who through the use of photography is represented to be slightly intimidating and outgoing. This is shown through
the construction of the front cover as the image shows an image of a young man showing attitude and personality.
Also using a musician name such as ‘General Dench’ effectively represents the youthful and music orientated social group
as quite intimidating and demanding. The term ‘General’ gives largely deep connotations of power.
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
My magazine ‘Rap-Mag’ is evidently a magazine aimed at those who favour mainstream/rap
music. In modern society the youthful appreciators of mainstream music also favour towards
rap too. Therefore this allows my media product to be far more versatile compared to indie or
dance magazines. This allows my magazine to be sold from a much larger scale of audience. So
in conclusion my magazine could be sold every newsagents. Also it could be effectively sold
where its target audience appreciate for e.g. Colleges, town centres etc.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
As stated in the previous slides the music choice of mainstream/rap music is selected as it
already has a large and versatile audience from males to females at the ages of 5-24 and
possibly higher. However in order to buy magazines which vary in price from £2-5 the age
group becomes more defied at an age of 15 years of age plus as money of the sort doesn't
come so regularly to young people. So in conclusion the audience of my media product
(magazine) would be extremely large and versatile at both genders ranging from 15 years
of age to 24.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
In order to attract my audience I used several techniques which would catch the
audiences eye. Firstly I ensured that my image consisted of mainly ‘General
Dench’. The dominance of the artist catches the audiences eye and makes it
attractive as he is constructed to be a massively appreciated star. Also using the
bold and colourful serif fonts to say artists names such as ‘WILL.I.AM’. This is
done effectively to capitalize on dragging in the audience in as much as possible
as they want to read about the stars.
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this
product?
I have learnt several things about technologies whilst constructing my media product.
Firstly whilst creating my media product on ‘Adobe Photoshop’ I have learnt to use all
the different alteration and construction techniques throughout the software in order
to improve my work. I have also learnt the essentials of colour and shape use in order
to attract audiences. To do so ‘Adobe Photoshop’ is used so that each detail is
perfect. This has shown mw how professional technologies have become in order to
capitalize on potential success.
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression
from it to the full product?
When I originally started working on my preliminary task to attempt to
understand the construction of my media product, I struggled in
attempting to create a appealing magazine that drew the potential future
audiences in. For example I was new to the use of ‘Adobe Photoshop’ and
struggled massively in layering and sizing specific constructions. I also
struggled in creating fluency throughout my work by using inaccurate
colours. In contrast to this my second and final attempt was undergone
with far more experience and comfortability. Using my own photography I
created an appealing youth orientated background which would appeal to
my target audience. I then layers simple colouring in order to make my
magazine professional and fluent as any inconsistency in my house style
would make my media product (magazine) seem unappealing, this would
obviously give the product less appreciation.
