Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India involving physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. Scientific evidence shows yoga can provide health benefits such as reducing stress, anxiety, and symptoms of various conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, asthma, hypertension, and cancer. As a physician, one can prescribe yoga to patients as part of a healthy lifestyle to treat musculoskeletal pain and other issues, as yoga is generally a safe and effective intervention when practiced properly.

We are today faced with numerous debilitating chronic illnesses related to aging, environment, and hedonistic lifestyle, such as cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases as well as many incurable diseases such as AIDS. Modern medical advancements provide the rationale for the integration of various traditional healing techniques including Yoga to promote healing, health, and longevity. It is imperative that advances in medicine include the wholistic approach of Yoga to face the current challenges in health care. The antiquity of Yoga must be united with the innovations of modern medicine to improve quality of life throughout the world. While modern medicine has a lot to offer humankind in its treatment and management of acute illness, accidents and communicable diseases, Yoga has a lot to offer in terms of preventive, promotive and rehabilitative methods in addition to many management methods to tackle modern illnesses. While modern science looks outward for the cause of all ills, the Yogi searches the depth of his own self. This two way search can lead us to many answers for the troubles that plague modern man. It is suggested that a two way integration of the experimentally tempered modern science with the experientially modelled science of Yoga can lead us to many answers for challenges plaguing modern humankind such as debilitating chronic illnesses related to aging, environment, and hedonistic lifestyle. In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

means “yoke” or
“unity” translated
from Sanskrit, the

• Asanas are the heart of Hatha Yoga
• Stretching that maintains and enhances
flexibility
• Many poses are a form of isometric

contraction of muscles without moving the
joint.
• Isometric exercise is often used in physical
therapy for the rehabilitation of injured
joints.
16. Focused Meditation

• You repeat a word, phrase or sound
in order to transcend the constant
distractions of the mind.
22. Functional Mapping of
Meditation
• Meditation is a conscious mental process
that induces a set of integrated physiologic
changes termed the “relaxation response”
by Herbert Benson.
• Functional magnetic resonance imaging
(fMRI) was used to identify and
characterize the brain regions that are
active during a simple form of meditation.
23. Results
• Significant signal increases were observed in the
dorsolateral prefrontal and parietal cortices,
hippocampus/parahippocampus, temporal lobe,
pregenual anterior cingulate cortex, striatum, and
pre- and post-central gyri during meditation.
• This indicates that the practice of meditation
activates neural structures involved in attention
and control of the autonomic nervous system.
– Neuroreport. 2000 May 15;11(7):1581-5. Functional
brain mapping of the relaxation response and
meditation. Lazar SW,…, Benson H.
26. Question

many conditions caused or made
worse by stress.
30. Relaxation Response
• Herbert Benson,
MD
• founding President
of the Mind/Body
Medical Institute
• Associate Professor
of Medicine,
Harvard Medical

• Whether you fight or run,
your sympathetic nervous
system will be on overdrive
pumping out nor-epinephrine.
• What are the physiological
effects of this process?
• Why would you not want this
to be a chronic state of
existence?
34. Fight or Flight
• Yoga and meditation decrease this
sympathetic tone and reduce feelings
of stress and anxiety
• Many modern health problems are
worsened by stress and anxiety
• Yoga works to decrease sympathetic
tone
35. Relaxation Response
• Significantly greater reductions in
psychological distress, anxiety, and
perceived stress were found in the
experimental group who had learned the
relaxation response.

reduce psychological distress and perceived
stress in college students.
