For the last 10 years, I
have taught nonprofit
communications, and my

reaped the benefits...
DURING COVID-19: One L.A. client with only 7 employees
got $127K in March, then more than doubled that with
$275K in April, and are on track to raise $2M, having their
best year ever.

DURING COVID-19: A Chicago student of my March webinar
got out of freeze mode and got $18,500 after getting two
matches and communicating in a timely way with her donors.
Year End Fundraising
To get out of overwhelm and start to feel in
control of your communications.
To make enough money to survive
COVID-19 and still provide programs when
it is all over.
To feel successful in communicating to
donors who are scared and feeling
helpless right now.

What I want for you...
COVID19 is causing a surge in
fundraising
...While we watch the facade of capitalist structures
crumble
...While people are dying alone
...While doctors and nurses are getting PTSD
...While donors are sitting there, wondering what they
can DO.

COVID-19 is a diagnostic tool?
Year End Fundraising
According to Arundati Roy, COVID-19 is a diagnostic tool.
It shows what’s wrong with our healthcare system, with our
wage levels, with our corporations, with our governments,
with our food systems.
And it lays bare the inequities for Black People, for Native
Americans, for incarcerated people, for people being
detained at the border, and not the least, the elderly.
It means we will no longer be able to fundraise or do earned
income the way we did before.
No more Goodwills or Salvation Armies. That model is going away.
Fewer Habitat for Humanities because of less in-person volunteer
opportunities.
You will need to change your models. You will need to change your
fundraising. And you MIGHT need to merge or shut down your
organization.
What does this crisis ultimately
mean?
I’ll share an opportunity to join us
for the next event we’re having,
and get involved in a larger
community.

At the end...
Ready? Let’s go.
●
Look at these emails that helped to raise $275K for
a small homelessness nonprofit in LA with just 7
staff!
●
What did they do aside from emails?
●
They got help from the board to fundraise
●
A donor raised $10K in a crowdfunding campaign
for them.
●
They also started calling their major donors.

Case Study 2: Momentous Institute
This appeal was originally going to be a direct mail piece, to
drop on May 15, immediately following a major fundraising
event for Momentous Institute – the AT&T Byron Nelson PGA
Tournament. Sadly, that event was canceled putting us into a $2
million hole over night. We moved quickly to secure a $100,000
matching gift, and moved the appeal to email. Because the
event canceled, we decided to move up the timeline and are
running the appeal from April 15 – May 15 – one week to go!
To date, we have secured almost $320,000 in gifts to match
the original $100,000 gift.
3 Emails that raised $320K!
Here’s what we’ve got
Email 1: April 15
Dear <<First Name>>
We're in unprecedented times. COVID-19 has caused
Momentous Institute to move forward in serving students,
families and clients in unique ways. And these unique ways are
creating a strain on our budget – a budget that was already
stressed.
A generous donor has offered to match any gift received by May
15, up to $100,000. Please help us raise these much-needed
dollars to continue our important work.
Email 1: April 15
Momentous Institute reacted quickly when COVID-19 closed our
campuses on March 18:
●
Within 2 days our teachers had restructured their education
plans to transition our students to at-home learning via
ChromeBooks and other creative options.
●
Our therapists were immediately reaching out to clients and
by the final week of March our therapists held 275 therapy
sessions via phone or teleconference.
●
Our Training team has posted blogs and webinars providing
suggestions on how to maintain your social emotional health
during this difficult time.
Email 1: April 15
But this is only scratching the surface. The COVID-19 crisis not
only disrupted our traditional methods of serving clients, it also
cancelled our beloved AT&T Byron Nelson tournament. This
tournament has been our chief fundraiser providing significant
dollars to support our work for more than 50 years.
Today, you have an opportunity to be a hero to Momentous
Institute. Take advantage of this exciting chance to have your
gift doubled!
In these extraordinary times, I know we can count on you. By
raising $100,000, we can continue meeting the needs of our
community – through education and social emotional learning.
Please make your generous gift before May 15 to be sure it gets
matched!
Email 1: April 15
Here’s what we’ve got
Email 2: April 23
Dear Friend,
In just one week, friends of Momentous quickly stepped up to
help us reach 25% of our $100,000 match goal.
We are truly touched by your generous support, but we still
need YOUR help to get us to 100%.
During this most difficult and uncertain time, social emotional
health has never been more important.
Email 2: April 23
Email 2: April 23
Just look at what your gift is making happen:
Your support allowed us to supply Momentous School families
with needed technology and learning kits to make sure all
students can participate in online learning.
Our therapeutic service clients are expressing increasingly high
levels of stress as they face issues like unemployment, keeping
their families safe and ability to buy food.
Remember – we still need your help to reach our $100,000
matching goal but the more we raise, the more support we can
provide to students like Alex and Joanna, parents like Julia and
hundreds of teachers during this difficult time.
Email 2: April 23
All of us at Momentous Institute say Thank You for continuing to
bring hope to our students, families and community!
Email 2: April 23
Here’s what we’ve got
Email 3: April 30
Dear Friend,
During this past school year, our fifth-grade students at
Momentous School were thriving with rigorous social, emotional
and academic learning, field trips, book reviews, family projects
and school musicals. They were preparing to move on to middle
school after the summer and leave a school community that
most have been a part of since pre-kindergarten.
Thanks to their amazing teachers, they are continuing to thrive
via online learning. However, thirty-one fifth grade students will
miss out on a once in a lifetime experience—a graduation
ceremony to celebrate what for most of them is the culmination
of eight years with us.
Email 3: April 30
Like so many students across the country, they will miss out on
family members, reading buddies, friends and teachers cheering
as they walk across the stage, receive their diploma and beam
with pride for that picture that will capture the memory.
But what won’t be lost is the strong foundation in academic,
social and emotional learning that they will each carry on their
journey forward.
While our students will not get to have a traditional graduation
ceremony where they can hug each other and celebrate the
future, they will graduate prepared for academic success and a
life of well-being, just as Momentous School students have for
over 20 years:
Email 3: April 30
●
95% of Momentous School alumni graduate from high school on time
compared to 85% of comparable peers.
●
78% of Momentous School alumni enroll in college compared to 46%
of comparable peers.
●
Momentous alum are nearly three times more likely to attain a
bachelor’s degree than comparable peers.
Your gift today will ensure that our students continue to achieve these
results. Furthermore, Momentous Institute shares out practices locally
and across the nation to support children that we will never meet.
COVID-19 may have taken away ceremonies and large group
celebrations. But it will never take away students’ sense of belonging,
their strong social emotional health and their interest in life-long learning.
Make your gift today – to help us reach our $100,000 matching goal, and
to celebrate our Momentous School Class of 2020.
Email 3: April 30
