MY NEW PARISH
By Fr Felix Rebello, Parish Priest, Infant Jesus Church, Jogeshwari-East
My dear friends and well-wishers,
I am writing to you for the first time since I joined my new parish, Infant Jesus church,
Jogeshwari-East.
First of all, I want to begin by thanking you from the bottom of my heart for standing with me,
and the parishioners of St Francis Xavier church, Panvel during the construction of our new
church. The beautiful new church of Panvel speaks in volumes on your love and generosity for
the House of God.
After my term at Panvel I have been transferred to Infant Jesus church, Jogeshwari. Slowly and
steadily I am getting familiar with the lives of Jogeshwari parishioners. From my observation
during the last few months, I can say that the majority of the families of this parish are not
economically well off. What is worrying is, though most of them (70-80%) manage to stay in a
small slum like house and earn their daily bread, when it comes to higher education of their
kids they find it hard to manage.
Just to give one instance. Sometime ago, a parishioner met me asking for some help from the
church to admit her son for IIT in a good Catholic technical college. The total fee was 1 lac.
Since church don’t have lot of funds, I could give her Rs 20,000/- from the parish community
fund. She was happy with whatever she got from the church. After a few days I asked her as to
how she could manage to get rest of the money. She said that she had some ornaments which
she deposited with a money lender and took a loan on a 2 percent monthly interest (24% per
year). She was lucky to get loan on 2% per month interest since she had some ornaments to
deposit. If not she had to pay much more interest.
When I shared the above incident in the PPC meeting, we felt that we need to do something
about helping such families. I presume there are many more such families who face a similar
situation. Perhaps, they may not even dream of admitting their kids for higher education
contd page 2/-
Page 2/-
because it is beyond their reach or they may choose some ordinary courses or may even start
working at a young age jeopardizing the bright future ahead of them.
Herein where you can do your bit to help such students by your generous contribution for their
higher education. The amount collected for this purpose will be used to help the poor students
to sponsor their higher education fee. This will not only brighten their future, but also will help
the future generations. Perhaps the students who are helped now may in turn contribute much
more than they received at a later stage when they finish their studies and start earning. This
way they may show their gratitude for the help they received from you.
Your contribution for this noble cause is most welcome. Cheques may be made in favour of
INFANT JESUS CHURCH and post or currier to: Parish Priest, Infant Jesus Church, Off
Western Express Highway, Shankerwadi, Jogeshwari-East, Mumbai 400 060.
To conclude with the words of Jesus, 'I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of
these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!' (Matt. 25:40). Helping the poor
students for their higher education is an opportunity for us to put these words into practice.

Pope Francis says, “the earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more
like an immense pile of filth”
As residents of this home, can we do a bit by segregating the garage
produced by us leading to ZERO GARBAGE society? If every family, if every
housing society starts ZERO GARBAGE project, it will help to a great extent
to make our environment clean and green.
WHY ZERO GARBAGE PROJECT AT ALL?
The dumping grounds of garbage are fast depleting.
Lot of scarce land is used to dump the garbage.
Crores of tax payers’ money is used to transport the garbage to the dumping grounds.
The improper processing of garbage at the dumping grounds creates a number of health
hazards to the neighbouring residents.
The garbage thrown on the roadside, especially plastic causes floods in the rainy season.
The stray dogs survive from the food from the roadside garbage, and creates lot of
menace.
Mishandled garbage becomes breeding ground for mosquitoes which causes diseases like
Dengue and Malaria.
The garbage thrown on the roadside, especially plastic causes floods in the rainy season.
The unhygienic handling of the garbage at the housing societies are injurious to the health of
the society sweepers/workers.
Finally the wealth from waste (wet garbage) which could have produced valuable manure is
lost forever.
 Following classification of wet and dry waste is just an example to help you
1. DRY GARBAGE
Plastics, Metal
Coconut shell
Thermacol,
Foam, Rexene
Battery cells,
Paper,
Cloth
Rubber, Bulbs….etc etc
2. WET GARBAGE
Vegetable waste,
Food waste
Garden waste
Wood pieces
Hair/nails,
Egg shells, Bones
flesh
Used cotton…etc etc
Note:

(PPT) NO. 6 – ZERO GARBAGE. This PPT can also be used to educate your residents or
other groups on the importance of waste management. Once your residents are made
aware of the importance of ZERO GARBAGE PROJECT, an appeal can be sent to all the
flats/houses to segregate their garbage. The sample letter to be issued to the members
of your housing society also is available in the above website. Go to GEM section and

WHAT IS A JUNK FOOD?
Any food that has poor nutritional value is considered unhealthy and may
be called a junk food. A food that is high in fat, sodium, and/or sugar is
known as a junk food. Junk food is easy to carry, purchase and consume.
Generally, a junk food is given a very attractive appearance by adding
food additives and colors to enhance flavor, texture, appearance, and
increasing long self life. A fast food may also be a junk food.
FIVE TIPS FOR A HEALTHY, HAPPY FAMILY
When good eating and exercise habits are formed at home, they can last
a lifetime. Use these techniques to teach your children the importance of
staying active and eating nutritious (and great-tasting!) food.
1] Good foods in; bad foods out.
2] Eat dinner as a Family — and slim down favorite meals.
3] Minimize snacking
4] Make the TV room a no eating zone.
5] Get moving as a family.
