El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It is the warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, while the cool phase is called La Niña. El Niño can have significant economic impacts through effects on agriculture, fisheries, energy, tourism and trade. Countries try to mitigate these impacts through early warning systems, climate modeling, adapting water and agricultural practices, and disaster preparedness.
