The paper presents a high-performance face detection system designed for mobile applications, addressing the challenge of illumination variations that typically complicate face detection. It introduces a modified census transform (MCT) for illumination invariant local structure features, paired with an efficient single-stage classifier, achieving a detection rate of 99.76% and low false positive rate of 0.18%. A novel hardware architecture for the face-detection engine, developed using FPGA and ASIC technologies, enables real-time processing at a maximum speed of 149 frames per second.
