This document compares the struggles of indigenous women in Australia and Canada. It outlines how Australian indigenous people faced oppression through the Aboriginal Protection Act of 1869, which controlled where they lived and who they could associate with. Further laws in the late 1800s aimed to assimilate mixed-race indigenous Australians into white culture. While some early white feminists raised awareness of indigenous issues, the feminist movement in Australia largely focused on white, middle-class women's rights. Today, indigenous Australians continue fighting for their rights to culture, self-determination, and land in the face of past government policies that eroded their heritage and traditions.
