2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
1. Written Summery of Ideas Generation Map
We have chosen to create a music video for the song‘Fallout’ by Catfish and The Bottlemen. The song (taken
from their debut album ‘The Balcony’) was released in the UK in September 2014. The band formed in 2007
and after several years of struggling, they slowly roseto success in the world of Indie music.Once signed to
Island Records, they were soon notice after their debut single‘Homesick’ was released, which lead them selling
out a two week tour, even before the releaseof their debut album. The purpose of my music video will beto
create an emotional response from the audience watching. It is aimed at mainly females aged 16-25 who are
fans of Indiemusic, particularly fans of Catfish and The Bottlemen. The video will bea mixture of conceptual,
narrativeand performance.
Our music video will bemainly narrative and performance with some conceptual shots to represent the failure
of a relationship.
For the performance shots, Alex wrote to the manager of Catfish and Bottlemen and gained a Photopass for
their concert in Manchester, located at The Ritz. She took lowangle close-ups of the lead singer, high angel
wide shots of the crowd and several more shots of the band. The difficulty wewill find duringthe editing
process is synchronizingtheperformance shots to the music. For the narrativesideof the video, we decided
to make it non-linear so thatthere is no beginning middleor end. This would leave the audience guessingas to
what the story was due to the clues we left them. For example, we are going to filmclose-ups of our
protagonist,Phoebe, talkingto and smilingatthe camera whilstsheis on a date, preferably atBlackpool in an
arcade. We want it to look as though the person holdingthe camera is her partner, whom she is on a date
with. Also, the lyrics “I'msorry if I drove, your matches to my clothes” aretowards the end of the song. When
the audience hears these, we are hopingto film shots such as a firebeing lit. This would symboliseher female
empowerment and have connotations of war. As well as this,we want to filmour protagonistsettingfire to a
pictureof her boyfriend and her to symbolisethe end of a relationship. This isthereason we want to use
conceptual imagery in the video as even though it is abstract, itstill symbolisesand represents other ideas. To
highlightthis,we have decided to filmshortshots of conceptual imagery that have connotations of memories
and a pastrelationship.Theseshots will includepanningshots of the Eiffel Tower and various other places
(such as the seaside) which will resembleflashbacks of dates the couples used to go on and the fun they had as
a couple. We would also aimto use time lapseshots of cars and traffic which would represent the journey that
the relationship had taken.
The setting of the music video will bein a range of different places. For the performance sideof the music
video, we will be filming ata Catfish and The Bottlemen concert in Manchester, located at The Ritz. The venue
is situated next to Manchester Oxford Road which makes it easily accessiblefor those filming. For the
conceptual sideof the music video we have decided to set itat numerous locations such as a beach, filming
the waves. In addition to this, there will also befootage of Paris and the Eiffel tower to connote romance and a
relationship. Finally,as thenarrativeis non-linearthere would also be various locationssuch as Blackpool and
the beach to show flashbacksof places thatthe couplehad visited.
There will be numerous characters in the music video who will appear atdifferent times depending on if the
current shot is narrative, performance or conceptual.Duringthe performance shots we are hopingto have
characters of the band from a range of different angles (for example high angleshots involvingthe crowd or
low angleshots highlightingtheir instruments). The crowd shots will highlightthepopularity of the band, and
give the video a more animated atmosphere to fit with the music. We areunaware of what costume the band
will bewearing, but basingon their pastcostumes for their previous liveperformances and the fact that they
are an Indieband, we can assumethey will bewearingmonochrome colours. This would be iconic for the Indie
Rock genre, due to other bands (such as The 1975 and the Arctic Monkeys) also wearingthese clothes. For the
conceptual imagery there will beno characters. For the performance sideof the video we aimto have one
female character, aged 18,which will allowus to show her perspective on the break up. As we can control her
2. costume, we plan on havingher wearingheavy make-up and Indiestyleclothing(checked shirt, doc martins,
parker coat, curly hair etc)
We have decided to have a medium frequency of Iconography in our music video. We are planningto include
shots of the Eiffel Tower and Paris to connote love and romance. As Paris isfamously known as ‘The City of
Love’, this will highlightthe love that the couple have shared in the past.We also havefootage of cars driving
alongthe dual carriageway which connotes the journey through a relationship. In addition to this,we plan to
filmfootage of flowers e.g. Roses, which arealso iconic for loveand romance. For the performance footage,
we plan on havingclose-ups of the lead singer’s guitar and other musical items, such as the microphones,
which are iconic for the Indiegenre. This would allowthe audienceto identify the genre in which the music is.
To allowour music video to stand out, we aim to use both non-diegetic and diegetic sounds to allowthe
narrativeof the story become more accessibleto the audience. For example, the track will play continuously
without pauses, however at the beginningof the music video we aimto have our protagonist(Phoebe)
speakingFrench, with English subtitles. This will beiconic as itlinksto our runningtheme of Paris and love.
This will also introducethe title of the track,as she will say “Fallout”.To closethe music video, we pla n on
having,Vann, the lead singer of Catfish and The Bottlemen shouting ‘Thank you’ to the audienceat the
concert. However, if this doesn’t work, we have the alternativeending of the lead singer shouting ‘Thank you’,
however itis directed towards the audiencefor watching the music video.
