2. Conclusion
Your conclusion paragraph (or better, paragraphs) should
probably be the place where you take your most explicit stand
on the subject. Think of it this way: now that you have presented
all this information, what should we do with it? Since you have
presented the research in a persuasive way, you’ll be able to
better comment on it, suggest directions, after you present it.
The basic point of these paragraphs is to bring it all home and to
provide a course of action based on the research presented.
_______________ Try to have a conclusion that doesn’t stink.
3. Why do most conclusion stink?
1. It’s the last thing you write (don’t!)
2. You’re through with this damn paper and it’s
due in ten minutes and you want to stop
writing. (no!!!!)
3. What else do you really have to say? (Not
much)
4. Don’ts
Don’t start with “in conclusion”
Don’t just repeat what you’ve already
said.
Don’t just repeat what’s in the
introduction.
5. Avoid phrases like "in conclusion," "to
conclude," "in summary," and "to sum up."
These phrases can be useful--even welcome-
-in oral presentations. But readers can see,
by the tell-tale compression of the pages,
when an essay is about to end. You'll irritate
your audience if you belabor the obvious.
6. Big Don’t
“there’s lots of pros and cons and lots
of different opinions and the pros have
their cons and there are good points
there and bad points but the pros and
the opinions are cons are there too and
the pros have their points and other
people have good points and there are
bad points too and in everything there’s
good and bad and pros and cons and
positives and negatives and sometimes
positives are better than negatives but
that doesn’t mean cons are always
better than pros because my best friend
is a pro and that doesn’t mean he/she is
always right.”
7. Do
Take a stand now – tell us what’s at
stake
Return to something that you’ve
discussed that’s persuasive and deal
with the implications.
Turn to the “What Should We Do
About It?”
8. Stasis
The final two questions of stasis theory are:
What should we do about it?
Who should deal with it?
Since this is an argumentative
synthesis, you can now get to these
points, which may not have been
addressed in your paper.
9. The way the argumentative synthesis works
Intro (sets up the issues)
Body Paragraph (objective look at
the other side)
Body Paragraph (objective look at
“your side”)
Body Paragraph (objective look at
“your side”)
Now that you’ve moderated the
issue, you can speak to it.
10. With all the inside stories and details, it would seem the HSUS and people
surrounding it are not looking out for the welfare of the horses as one would
suspect. The Humane Society isn’t handling this situation well, as evidence of
their past actions of deceit. I think the HSUS and many others involved in this
case have too many motives to be acting upon. Whether it is revenge or a
record of wanting to create conflict, it is clearly unjustified by their past
actions. When the HSUS couldn’t get away with the Ringling Bros. dilemma,
they moved to the Walking/Racking Horses. I don’t think any of these people
that are obviously acting through hate and other means of “getting back” at
the industry, should be involved with the passing of this bill. It also seems to
be the government is abusing their power through technology such as the
eye scanner so they can consistently turn horses down, not actually checking
them based on their feet. I believe the problem they should be addressing is
to create an objective way of testing horses’ feet for the scar rule, or any
other rule instead of banning pads, chains, and weighted shoes.
11. Along with the argument that online music streaming is bad for the music industry,
there is a side of this argument that believes the music streamed online actually
helps out rather than tear things down. When an album is made through a record
label, the artist signs a contract stating that the record label will pay for the whole
recording process but in return they make most of the money, if not all of it, from
the sales of the albums. So from this perspective its likely to say that music
streamed online ehlps the artist because they are the ones who deserve it since
they put all the time and effort into most of it and it helps people get exploited to
them which will lead to them wanting to see the artist live, where artist get their
income from. In the web article “ Inlfuence of the Internet…”, the author writes
“When music moved to the internet and people could start buying single songs at a
time and sharing their music with friends, record companies, who made their
money on album sales, became less and less necessary.”( Inlfuences of the
internet..”) Its almost as if record companies are the bad ones in this case because
they take all of the money well earned by the artist. So now with music being
available on the internet its slowly taking care of the record labels selfishness
12. Both sides of the argument have key points to becoming a successful athlete,
but the best way to develop would be to play multiple sports. By doing this,
the athlete will have a better chance of not getting injured and having more
fun. If a child does not want to pick one sport, then so be it, they should be
able to play what they love. It is smart for an athlete to specialize at an age
where they have the full capacity to understand the commitment they are
agreeing to if they want to continue onto the collegiate level. An athlete that
plays multiple sports will learn all the qualities of being a team player.
Athletes should also get involved in strength training programs and yoga so
that they can develop stronger stabilization and flexibility to prevent injury.
The most important aspect of deciding between specializing in one sport or
being a part of multiple sports is communication. The parent must let the
child have a say in what they want to do with their childhood. At the end of
an athlete’s career they should ask themselves, was it fun? And was I
successful from it? --
13. In summation, we can see that hunting is necessary and in some cases,
a need. Hunting, when done correctly can have an immensely positive
impact on wildlife and prolong conservation of land. It is a necessity to
control populations of animals who find solace in urbanized areas only
to be killed by accidents as well as protecting them from disease and
ultimately, our own pockets. Hunting serves a right as one that needs
attention and when pursued in correct manner, can be very productive
to the animals themselves and our own well-being as a human
population.
14. The rising rates in obesity concern many people. I believe that if the schools
took a stand and actually tried to teach the students how to live a long and
healthy life, then the rates would drop substantially. Many overweight adults
that I have spoken to have said that they wish they could go back and try to
live a healthier life as a child in order to not be in the situation they are in
now. As a trainer and as someone who has worked with overweight people, I
know that education about a healthy life is lacking from the school systems.
Schools educate children about math and science and every core subject,
and I believe that physical education should never be lost due to budget cuts
because children need that education so they do not grow up to be a
statistic. All in all, schools need to take a look at the rising obesity rates and
consider a physical education plan for their students to live a longer healthier
life.
