Air Pollution
4.4. DATAThe US air emission data employed in this study is obtained from the US
Environmental Protection Agency s national emission inventory (USEPA 2006; 2009), covering
all anthropogenic emissions of six air pollutants (SO2, PM2.5, PM10, NOx, VOC, and NH3) in
the 48 states of the US (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). The gross external damage (GED) is
estimated by Muller et al. (2011). The 2002 industry level GEDs are identified by a six digit
industry code from the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). In total, there are
about 840 NAICS industries included. To account for transferred values of goods and services
through trade, we employ Input Output Accounts (make and use tables) data from the US Bureau
of Economic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to link emissions and damages to the IO data, we match industries in six digit NAICS
code to industries in six digit IO code, and it is no problem for most cases. However, there are
two exceptional cases. One exceptional case is that for 20 IO industries, we cannot find the
matched NAICS industries. That is, there is no information on damages in the 20 IO industries.
Thus, in the baseline model, we leave damages in the 20 industries equal to zero. Another
exceptional case is that with regard to the agricultural industries and construction industries,
damage data are in a more aggregated level. Therefore, disaggregating GEDs are necessary with
respect to those industries. In the baseline model we allocate GEDs in agricultural and
construction industries proportionally to value added. The procedures to handle these two
exceptional cases are explained in Appendix B. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses are carried out
in Section 4.6 to assess changes of results if different approaches are used to handle these issues.
For the simplicity of results presentation and results discussion, we further aggregate the
estimated results into 42 sectors according to the IO code. Hereafter, we refer to the 6 digit IO
industries as industries , and refer to the 42 aggregated IO sectors as sectors . In addition,
according to the sectoral characteristic, the 42 sectors can be allocated into three broad aggregates:

Tallerman Co Pty Ltd v Nathan s Merchandise (Vic) Pty Ltd (1957) 98 CLR 93 PART I Summary
of Facts The dispute occurred in Victoria between a registered company, Tallerman Co Pty Ltd (
the plaintiff ) and an incorporated company, Nathan s Merchandise Pty Ltd. ( the defendant),
where both parties operated their business. Two previous binding contracts (orders No. 58 and
No. M57) were made in communications on 14th May 1951 and 2nd August 1951 respectively,
each for the sale by the plaintiff to the defendant of 1,000,000 Hungarian .22 bullets. A
consignment of 1,800,000 bullets for the above orders was dispatched from Sydney to the
defendant by rail on the 12th February 1952 and was received by a carrier employed by the
defendant in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kitto J. verified that whether or not an existing contract is considered to have been rescinded,
depends on the intention of the parties involved. When examining the two critical
correspondences of 21st March 1952/ June 4th 1952, it was held that no intention by the
defendant to discharge the previous 1951 contracts was found; the letters of offer and acceptance
did not constitute a new and substituted contract, and hence all conditions of the earlier contracts
were to be binding. Assuming that the contracts is of variation, the final substantial issue to be
anlaysed was whether the Plaintiff s acceptance of the original contracts was effective for the
Defendant to be in breach of its terms. Decision The appeal failed. As the plaintiff voluntarily
confined itself to the two correspondences and thus chose not to sue in Victoria, these two letters,
under New South Wales law, did not amount to a new contract, and the plaintiff was not
protected by the offer and acceptance rule. The majority embraced the view that the result was
tried on a conventional basis and would have been judged differently if the Plaintiff had not
demanded the case to be determined in Sydney. PART III Implications of decisions for the
principles of offer and acceptance The general rule for an agreement to be deemed valid is for

Social Identity In Lord Of The Flies
Individuals have the basic need to belong and feel connected with the social world, which
stimulates friendship and peer group formation (Ellis Zarbatany, 2007). Social identity theory
suggests that our self identification is shaped by social context and based on our identification with
the group, rather than individual traits (Hornsey, 2008). Moreover, self categorization theory allows
us to construct group identification, give us social information to categorize in group and out group
members, and ensure group processing (Hornsey, 2008). As children approach to adolescent, the
relationship with peer group becomes the primary form of socialization; therefore, the interaction
with peers emphasizes the role of social support, friendship, social... Show more content on

Moreover, peer socialization contributes to central group status, values group identification, and
emphasizes on group acceptance (Ellis Zarbatany, 2007). Therefore, children are able to self select
their own social group and construct their social identity through exploring all possible group at
very young age of life (Harris, 1995). On the other hand, children with different ages hold
different values when defining their own social groups (Ellis Zarbatany, 2007). Specifically,
young children define groups on the basis of common actives and social behavior, whereas older
adolescents emphasize on the role of social comparison, motivates to increase one s self esteem,
and maintain a positive self evaluation through group processing (Harris, 1995). Evidently, the boys
select their own social groups that fit them the most based on observable characteristics, interests,
and traits (Golding, 1962). As the result, they tend to hold different values and form different social
groups based on their need for group distinction (Golding,

Field Trip Reflection
Reflection Paper I went to Starbucks for my Field Trip and prior to this trip, I made a list of
things that I would like to particularly observe relating to American culture/values. Some ideas
included interactions between American people, gender differences as well as employees attitude. I
wanted to examine the ways in which Americans behave around people or their behavior towards
other people. Before the field trip, I had a few thoughts/assumptions/beliefs about Americans such
as I thought Americans were more hostile and reserved, they usually keep to themselves. However,
my assumptions changed after the field trip which will be explained later. I was excited and
intrigued to learn about American culture/values during my field trip and... Show more content on

Some even started up conversations with the stranger next to them like How has your day
been? or the line s so long! . This suggest goodness of humanity in American values. The
politeness, courtesy and friendliness of people showed me American s authentic/genuine spirit.
It made them look more likable and accommodating. Furthermore, I observed the interactions
between male and female and how it relates to gender differences. I noticed that majority of men
were a gentlemen and have manner. For example, a few men would let women go ahead of them
in line when they both arrived simultaneously, being complete strangers. This showed me
equality in society such as how men treat women with care and as well as goodness of humanity.
This could also be form of norm in society in American values as a gentlemen courtesy and
politeness. It is our expected perception of masculinity what society deems as appropriate
behavior for a man . The attitudes of the employees particularly put a smile on my face. They were
hardworking, took orders down politely and efficiently, ensuring that my order was perfect. They
had manners and gave me a positive/happy vibe. They made sure to work fast and efficiently, trying
their best to not hold up the queue. They were quick in making their customers coffees and this

INTRO: The phrase do not judge a book by its cover is a widely recognized idea the majority of
people keep in their peripheral mind when introduced with a new idea. The initial perceptions we
make solely on someone s outward appearances are out of our control, as it is a natural connection
our brain makes between presentation and character. Though we cannot control what we
instinctually comprehend, keeping an open mind is important, especially when meeting someone
new.
In the works Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, the

Frankenstein, suffered a similar, uncaring fate. When The Creature first rises from dormancy, he is
promptly turned away by a fearful Frankenstein who locks himself in his room. (pg. 35 36)
He is shamed into living in solitude, fearful that he will be ostracized if he attempts to set foot on
the surface. Over the years of tormenting those who reside in the Opera house, he earns the
reputation of opera ghost due to his unseen and spectral nature. It is shown in numerous occasions
that even referring to him as opera ghost is somewhat taboo. (p.14)
As a result of their unfortunate upbringing, Erik and the Creature grow to resent humanity for its
poor treatment of them. In the Creatures case, a couple specific instances stand out which fuel his
desire for revenge. When he reveals himself to the De Lacey family, he is attacked and forced to
flee for his own safety as well as theirs. He soon returns, only to find the cottage empty. He
proceeds to burn it down out of hurt and rage. This is a good example of his explosive nature, and
how he is compelled to act on his emotions rather than use logic.
For the first time feelings of revenge and hatred filled my bosom... I bent my mind towards injury
and death. The Creature, Frankenstein pg.

many more people have started loving the sport of hockey. This could be in the form of playing
it as a kid or watching the games on TV as an adult. Many people also travel to toronto every year
to look at the new players who were added. Also, the importance of the hall of fame is the history
of the building. It took over 70 years for the building to be built and open to the public. The hall
of fame also values its history so much that they had added a section of the hall of fame
specifically to inform the visitors about the history of the building. The Hockey Hall of Fame has

INTRODUCTION TO NANOTECHNOLOGY
1.1 Introduction
Carbon is the sixth element in the periodic table, the fourth most abundant element in the universe
and the basic building block for all life. Carbon mostly exists in all organic molecules and 95% of
it is the important basis of all chemical compounds. Carbon has been identified as a natural
compound such as DNA and photosynthesis process. Carbon is unique in possessing allotropes of
each possible dimensionality, 3D diamond, 3D graphite, 2D graphene, 1D nanotube and 0D
fullerene. Fullerenes are accepted as the fourth form of solid carbon after amorphous, graphite and
diamond forms. Fullerenes are carbon clusters constituted by an even number of carbon atoms in
the form of a hollow sphere. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each carbon atom is covalently bonded (sp2 hybridized) to three other carbon atoms in a
hexagonal array, leaving one free electron per each carbon atom. Each hexagon in the graphene
sheet exhibits two pi electrons, which are delocalized allowing for the efficient conduction of
electricity. A single layer of graphite is called grapheme. This material displays extraordinary
electrical, thermal and physical properties. Graphene is technically a non metal but is often
referred to as a quasi metal due to its properties being like that of a semiconducting material and
allowing it to display high electron mobility at room temperature. Graphene is the basic structural
element of carbon allotropes such as graphite, charcoal, carbon nanotube and

Early Life As A Social Determinant Of Health
Early life as a social determinant of health has the potential to impact both a person s health and
wellbeing. Social and economic disadvantage, belonging to a marginalised population, access to
adequate nutrition, educational attainment and exposure to adverse experiences all contribute to an
individual s functional healthinto midlife and old life age. Those children who suffer
socioeconomic disadvantages have earlier onset and faster progression of disease, resulting in
higher morbidity and earlier mortality (Agahi, Shaw, Fars, 2014).
The social model of health takes the approach that a broad array of characteristics influence the
health of people, not merely biological and genetic factors (Wilkinson, Marmot, 2003). Families, ...

Child health inequalities were first explored in the 19th century, with regards to the differences in
infant mortality rates within the social classes (Woolfenden et al., 2013). Early childhood
development as a social determinant is now described as the factors and environments that can
influence development and lifelong health and wellbeing (Maggi et al., 2010). These factors
interact with one another and include; social interactions, physical environment, living conditions,
learning environments and socio political context (Maggi et al., 2010).
The societal influences on early life are determined by a variety of factors, ranging from access
to survival necessities to income inequality (Maggi et al., 2010). Developing countries are more
likely to be impacted by war, slavery, discrimination, disease, and a lack of water and sanitation
facilities (Maggi et al., 2010). Developed countries face issues around childhood exposure to
poverty and the inability for some to access the services needed for ideal health and wellbeing
(Maggi et al., 2010). Although the issues faced between countries are immensely different, the
concerns for one child are no less important than the concerns for another (Maggi et al., 2010).
There are also vast differences between childhood growth and development within countries. This
disparity is caused by differences in socioeconomic status, population

Rhetorical Devices Used In A Modest Proposal
In any piece of literature, consideration of the audience is key in assuring that not only the overall
theme, but also the desired reaction to the work is attained. In terms of analysis, identifying the
audience may lead to greater insight, as depending on individual traits and beliefs, responses can
vary wildly from one group of people to the next, and in identifying the audienceand their
respective feedback, one can hone in on the author s intended purpose of the work and judge
whether or not the work in itself is effective in communicating its point. In Jonathan Swift s
controversial essay A Modest Proposal, he achieves this successful conveyance by utilizing
careful appeals such as logos, ethos, and pathos in a prolific manner and in such a way so as to
shock his audience, in this case, the land owning English elite, and as such, A Modest Proposal is

Although the Irish seem to be the main object of description throughout Swift s essay, his
audience seems to center on the rich, land owning English elite. One may deduce this from his use
of the name Pretender to refer to the exiled James Stuart, a Catholic king ousted and exiled after
the Glorious Revolution of 1688 1689. With Ireland s population being mostly Catholic, and Swift
introducing the solution of greatly [lessening] the number of Papists (635) through his proposal, he
seems to possess an English mindset in the form of a sort of condescending attitude towards the
Irish populace. In addition to this, Swift also distances himself from the issue of Irish
overpopulation as a whole in his use of the distal (distant), demonstrative pronoun that , as

Loyalty In Plato s Symposium
One type of love that is brought up by many speakers in Plato s Symposium is that of an older
man, around thirty, and a much younger boy, around thirteen. This love is rare in today s society,
but all of the speakers present feel the need to defend this pederasty, proving the increased role that
this love played in their society. Although this love was more common during the time of the
Symposium, there are similar types of relationships still occurring. Not all of these modern
relationships include sex as the old relationships did, but they still have the exchange of virtue and
wisdom that the past relationships did. Many of the speakers address the issue of pederasty
directly, and others do so indirectly through inferences and conclusions. During the course of

21). This would lead one to believe that the laws against pederasty prohibit couples from
marrying and living together, which if given the opportunity could lower the amount of disgrace
among couples as the men and boys would be more likely to stay together. These type of laws
which regulate the types of love that are allowed, are often controversial especially since they could
not even say what they want to get for themselves from one another (p. 21). Since these pederast
relationships do not contribute to the advancement of the race through procreation, the polis may
see no reason to allow them to continue. To the people involved in the relationship, they are looking

Billy McMahon and Nick Campbell now face unemployment and have no desirable directions to

Fall Of Disco
The Rise and Fall of Disco
The birth of Disco had a huge influence on the American culture in the 1970s. It reached far
beyond music and into fashion, club culture, and film. Disco was created in Philadelphia and
New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s, formed by people in reaction to the popularity
of rock music and the lack of progress of dance music in the late 60s. First heard in nightclubs for
many minority groups including Italians, Latinos, blacks, gays, and hippies, it was embraced by
women, as well as men, and many female entertainers came into fame because of disco music.

Gun-Related Violence In Pop Culture
Gun related violence has long since been apart of American history dating all the way back to
colonization, western cowboys of the 19th century all the up to today s modern era. The revolver
has long since been a staple of American portrayals in pop culture. On June 21, 1968 TIME
magazine debuted its weekly issue with the cover dawning a cartoon hand and smoking revolver
accompanied by brightly contrasting colors. The image comes weeks after Senator Robert
Kennedy was assassinated in the lobby of a Los Angeles hotel. Nearly three months prior to that

Roy Lichtenstein s color usage and choice ties in perfectly with the magazine s legacy and

The Positives Of Colonialism
World Issues: Personal Opinion Essay
The Positives of Colonialism:
Colonialism has been portrayed as leaving negative impacts on countries, however many do not
take into consideration the positives effects of colonization. The people of Africa established a
mainstream religion to follow (Christianity), including new laws and a new political system.
Countries bonded with one another and signed agreements to prevent conflict between countries. It
has benefited many people that were illiterate; schools and education were given importance by the
British, whether it was education in India or Africa all of them were given universal education.
Colonization has brought many benefits to countries like Africa, Pakistan and India. Each country
was given the opportunity to shape themselves, to be able to stand up on their own with British aid.
Colonialism moulded the countries to what they are, and in return the British requested much less
than the countries it supported. With the help of the British, countries managed to stabilize their
justice systems, boost their economy, and introduce a new religion. People misunderstood the
British because of the power they had and assumed that if they were to take over their land, they
would lose all control over their country. However contradicting their common beliefs, countries
remained to have control over their colonies and Britain continued to do its job as a provider. The
power Britain encompassed provided countries with safety and

Why Animals Should Laws Obeying Animals And Animals
How often do you eat meat, eggs, or any dairy product? Do you ever think about the animal or
the animal s feelings? When you look at the biology food chain you find that wildlife are
predators preying among each other. Plants are eaten by small rodents and insects which are
eaten by frogs. Snakes eat frogs and foxes eat rabbits which are consumed by humans.
Mushrooms feed off of dead animals and plants and such is the cycle of food. Even though
Animals should be safe, there should not be laws protecting animals on farms and in the

of the things we have. Animals provide meat, milk, fur, and sources of protein. Without animals
there would not be insulin for the regulation of diabetes, valves for human heart surgery, or
suede for shoes. I believe pets should be protected, but not farm animals or wild animals who are
used for important by product. Animals are used to make parts such as water filters, insulation,

How Social Class Can Change The Way People Handle Punishments
In the year 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bill Gates was arrested for driving over the
speed limit and for driving without a driver s license in his Porsche 911 (Montaldo 2015: 1). It is
rumored that Gates later paid his bail with cash from his wallet. It seems that Bill Gates didn t
care that he got pulled over. In January of 2014 Justin Bieber was arrested for driving under the
influence and for resisting arrest. Bieber reportedly donated fifty thousand dollars to a youth
charity to help as part of a plea deal. Later the drunken driving charges were dropped and Justin
went on living his normal life as if nothing had ever happened (Duke 2014: 1). These stories
portray how social classcan change the way people handle punishments. In this paper, I will review
literature found on the topic, view the issue through a sociological perspective, and then present the
main argument. Higher class individuals engaged in greater unethical behavior (Dubois, Galinsky,
Rucker 2015: 437)
There has been a lot of research on this topic. I found multiple sources that helped me better
understand the question at hand. In the article Social Class, Power, and Selfishness: When and
Why Upper and Lower Class Individuals Behave Unethically written by David Dubois, Adam D.
Galinsky, and Derek D. Rucker, I found that the upper class seem more prone to engage in
unethical, deviant behavior . There are a multiple of reasons why. Selfishness among those higher

The Ethics Of Belief By Clifford. Pascal
Why it is wrong to Believe Anything upon Insufficient Evidence
Name
Institution
Introduction The fact that one can believe in something or a statement is based on, among other
factors, the available evidence. A range of philosophers have written widely on this topic. Clifford
in his Influential essay The Ethics of Belief defends the contention that it is always wrong for any
human being to believe anything if there is insufficient evidence. He uses two stories to illustrate
wrong ways through which people arrive at beliefs. William James, however, disapproves
Clifford. Pascal has a different view on belief formation where he argues that reasons for
believing and failing to believe in God are indecisive. The three philosophers have varied views
on how beliefs are formed. This essay discusses the reasons why Clifford made the above
conclusion, the position taken by James in his opposition and how the argument relates to Pascal s
Wager.
In Clifford s first section of his essay, he narrates two stories as an illustration of how beliefs are
arrived at. His first story is that of the ship owner who sends an immigration ship out to sea. The
ship owner had a dream where he saw the ship sink and as a result, doubts whether the ship is fit to
sail safely in the sea. Instead of having the doubts cleared through asking an expert to do thorough
investigation; an expensive and time consuming exercise, he goes ahead to recommend that the
ship goes out to

The Character Analysis Of Shameless As A Dramatic Comedy
Have you ever wanted to watch a dramatic comedy, but could never find the one ? I would highly
recommend Shameless for anyone one who is having trouble finding the one . There are many
television shows that can keep anyone entertained, but Shameless has all the right factors that are
needed to be a great dramatic comedy. Shameless is a good dramatic comedy because the
characters and situations are relatable to real life, the TV show has moral teachings, and it s
very suspenseful. One of the things that makes Shameless such a great dramatic comedy is how
the characters and situations are so relatable to real life. It s important for a TV show to make
the audience feel like they re connected to the characters as they deal with their situations in
each episode. There is evidence in every season that shows the relativity between the characters
and real life situations. For example, in season 6, episode 1; Frank is currently dealing with
losing a loved one, while both daughters, Fiona and Debbie are making decisions about their
pregnancy. Fiona begs for her little sister to do adoption or abortion. Debbie doesn t quite
understand how Knue 2 having a child while being fourteen, can ruin a lot of great opportunities
later. Fiona chooses to have an abortion since she cannot make enough money to support herself
or all her siblings. In addition to relatable characters and situations, Shameless also offers moral
teachings. How does a dramatic comedy offer moral teachings? Shameless provides many
examples on how drug and alcohol abuse affects a family home. There is also evidence on how
Shameless provides that. In season 4, episode 5; Fiona celebrates something good that has
happened, but not in a correct way. She decides to buy drugs, and leave them out where her little
brother, Liam, can get his hands on causing him to overdose. Fiona then faces the consequences
on the abuse of drugs, and the toll it can have on a family. Another prime example would be in
season 3, episode 7; Fiona fights for her rights to become legal guardian over her younger siblings
after being taken away from

Essay Robert Altmans Nashville
Nashville Essay
Robert Altman s movie Nashville is based on the political, social, and personal problems that our
country has to deal with. These problems are rooted in the battle between the need to create some
false image of success and the need for truth which is the struggle that exists in every character of
this film (except Jeff Goldbloom). To show this Robert Altman takes us through Nashville s
Country Music using political commentary, music and realistically portrayed dialogue to tell the
story.
Altman portrayed politics as sort of a parasite feeding off of the Nashville dream. He used
acousmatic sound in two ways to portray these parasitic politics. The first way is the use of the
Hall Walker van which was an almost a surreal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Altman also uses dialogue in a similar manor. The nature of dialogue itself is solely for creating
and upholding the self image of the Nashville Star weather you are one or not. The conversations
never get passed the surface issues, and no one ever speaks their mind unless it s safe. But, the
reality of each character is very real and deep due to the way the dialogue was set up. Most of
the people were frivolous so in order to add some depth and reveal their true character Altman
had to make the dialogue as realistic as possible. The dialogue seemed almost unrehearsed or not
planned at all which gives it its reality. The most odious example of this is when the Hal Walker
representative is arguing about the political sign with Barbra Gene s husband at Centennial Park.
He slips on his line in the heat of the argument. I don t know if this was intentional or not, but I
think they chose to keep it in the movie because it seemed to be more true to reality than just a
smooth flowing argument that would normally be in a movie. The little slip gave way, for the first
time, a vulnerable side to the Hal Walker rep or even politics for that matter.
There is also another form of acousmatic, and it is the subtle comments of the crowd. Because there
are so many appearances and performances the crowd reaction becomes very important to the
context of the story from an outside critical standpoint. Putting these comments together creates one

The Last Star Character Analysis
Effort Determines the Outcome
Rick Yancey s science fiction novel, The Last Star, takes place in a modern day society where
the government has become corrupted and is now working against the human race. Most of the
people left after the 5 waves, barely even try to stay alive. They know the odds of surviving is a
lot to a little, so they think what is the point of staying alive a week longer. Although, a group of
6 people try their hardest and their best to stay alive. These 6 people are probably the only 6
people in their world that is trying to stay alive. And because they try their best, they end up
surviving much longer than other people. This suggests that a possible theme for Rick Yanceys The

That gave Cassie the time to set the trap into motion. Because she thought and took in her
surroundings, she was able to escape the silencer and return to Ringer. In the ache of time grinding
to a crawl, the power line falls from the prey s hand in a graceful, sweeping arc. The light sparks
off exposed wires as they descend languidly as snow. The line that gracefully falls slips through
the silencer s fingers. The light glints off the wires as the touch ground, silently, like falling
snow (Yancey 298). This shows how Cassie took in her surroundings and came up with a better
way to handle her situation. She knew how once a silencer, you are faster, stronger, and better in
every physical way. She knew she would be beaten if she tried to run, so she decided to eliminate
the silencer. This is important because it helps show another critical example of how the theme
fits this story. The theme fits this scene because Cassie tried her best to create a trap that would
work against the silencer, and because she put so much effort into it, she ended up succeeding and
returning to Ringer. This refers back to the theme, because Cassie did exactly what the theme is.
When a problem was handed to her, she tried her best to solve it, and in return her solution worked.
An example of author s craft that Rick Yancey uses in The Last Star is exploding the moment. One
scene where this takes place, is when

Analysis Of Fritz Lang s Metropolis And The Garden...
There is a lot to be said about Fritz Lang s Metropolis, as it has many overlapping themes. There is
the theme of humans becoming as replaceable as machines. It has a theme of class division which
leads to a Marxist type revolution. The theme I want to focus on in this paper however, is the
religious themes and symbolism that are prevalent throughout the film, as I feel they are the most
prominent. Metropolis makes a lot of calls to Judeo Christian religions and biblical stories, using its
storytelling method, characterization, and visuals.
The story begins with the main character, Freder, in a lush garden surrounded by a harem of
beautiful and scantily clad women. This scene was likened to the Garden of Eden by Jerold J.

Racism In To Kill A Mockingbird
It is extremely rare and almost impossible to find someone who has the fearlessness to be so
different that they are able to think and act on their own. Human bias is a huge factor
contributing to the way people think. Every day, humans are influenced by the people around
them which alter individual thoughts. Society is open to assistance when making decisions
because of the fear that they are wrong or different. This is where racism appears and becomes a
problem just because of the impact people have on each other. The most effective way to defeat
fear is by acknowledging it, and in doing so humans learn to fight through their fear which
eventually results in diminishment. The world would become a more delightful, friendly place
where people think and act on their own. Racism would not be an issue in society if people fixed
a major flaw of not thinking for themselves. Humans do not have the courage to say their own
opinion because they fear to be wrong or different.
A countless amount of decisions are made every day including those in a courtroom. In the book
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the outcome of the court case is decided by human flaw and
the inability to think individually. Reverend Sykes says, I ain t never seen any jury decide in
favor of a colored man over a white man... (72). The reality of people not being able to think for
themselves increases the use of racism. The people of Maycomb have been influenced by those

Sickle Cell Anemia ( Sca )
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited blood disease which causes normal, round, healthy red
blood cells to transform into sickle shaped cells. Normal red blood cells are flexible and can easily
pass through capillaries to bring oxygen to different parts of the body. However, sickle cells are
fragile, and can easily die, leading to anemia (red blood celldeficiency). SCA can also cause blood
vessel occlusion (blockage of blood vessels), tissue infarctions (death due to lack of oxygen),
bone, joint, and abdominal pain, yellow eyes and skin, pale skin, delayed growth, increased risk
of infections, and damage to organs. The disease is passed on by autosomal recessive
inheritance, which means both parents of a child must have the defective gene for the child to
be affected. If only one gene is inherited, the victim becomes a carrier of the sickle cell trait,
producing only some sickle cells with little or no symptoms. This means two people with the trait
have a 25% chance of having a baby with sickle cell disease, 25% chance of them having no
defects, and 50% chance of the baby becoming a carrier as well. When the gene is inherited, it
mutates the beta (ОІ) globin gene in chromosome 11, changing the hemoglobins produced using
instructions from the gene from a healthy hemoglobin A (Hb A) to a mutated hemoglobin S (Hb
S). Many tests can be done to check for sickle cell disease, the most common being an ordinary
blood test, where the blood is examined for hemoglobin S. If the

Deforestation Of Latin American Forest
Deforestation presents in an abundance of ways, including fires, clear cutting for agriculture,
ranching and development, unsustainable logging for timber, and degradation due to climate
change. The foremost reason of deforestation in Latin America is the requirement for food, fuel,
shelter, and foreign exchange. Year on year, a space of tropical forest
the size of Great Britain is
converted from an area equal to the size of Europe. Ever since 1950, according to the U.N. Food
and Agriculture Organization (FAO), half of the world s forests have disappeared. Latin
America has lost 37 percent of its tropical forests, says the FAO. As more and more of Latin
American forest are degraded, more and more detrimental effects are being seen. Deforestation is
changing a number of resources for tribal groups, altering their way of life, temperatures are
increasing at a dangerous rate because of a buildup of carbon dioxidein the atmosphere, habitats and
species such as plants and wildlife are being annexed due to the destructive effects of deforestation.
Deforestation is inarguably helpful to supplying money to countries that sell the products from the

social costs. The local residences are not benefitting and the funds are being siphoned out of the

Misconceptions Of Grief Essay
3 Dangerous Misconceptions About the Phases of Grief
Everyone reacts and processes events in life differently. For example, to miss the train while you
are leaving for a weekend getaway could make some people go into a panic and it could even ruin
their entire weekend by having this rough start. While the next person might look at it as a minor
setback that just makes the trip more interesting.
Another example could be a breakup or divorce from a long term significant other. While one
person may be excited about starting a new chapter in life, another may find it hard to embrace their
sense of identity without the other person in their life any more.
Or the loss of a job, one person may simply move on looking for the next job trusting fate has
something else in store, while another may shut down and turn to drugs or alcohol for comfort as
they cannot see themselves in a different kind of role. The human ... Show more content on

Achilles Is The First Tragic Hero
THESIS STATEMENT
Euripides Achilles is seen as the first tragic hero because he has all the criteria of a tragic hero
high social position, undergoes reversal of fortune, and a tragic flaw but he does not have a tragic
downfall.
PURPOSE STATEMENT Through critical essays, research, and reading The Iliad
, it can be
perceived that Achilles is the first tragic hero in dramatic history.
INTRODUCTION
Throughout The Iliad, it is debated whether Achilles is the tragic hero or Hector. Looking at the
lifestyle of Achilles, it is clear that he is the prototype of the tragic hero. According to Ian
Johnston, This development is unique to [Achilles] in the poem and is close enough to what
tragic heroes go through to enable us to say that he enters the realm of tragic experience
(Johnston). Achilles shatters the belief that Hector is not the first hero when the story told in
Euripides The Iliad showed many more of the characteristics of the tragic hero in Achilles that
we all know today. The criteria of the tragic hero aligns perfectly with Achilles since he has a
tragic flaw, which is his intense and unquenchable rage, also he is in a high social position,
because he is an invulnerable general and demi god. He also experiences a reversal of fortune
through his faults and crimes. He would be considered the perfect tragic hero if he only had a
tragic downfall, which he does not since The Iliad ends at the funeral of Hector.

Pros And Cons Of Labor
Landowners and former slaves were often engaged in labor contracts, often these relationships
were contentious and needed intervention by the Freedman s Bureau (the contract was created and
supported by the federal government written by the Freedman s Bureau.) Agreements between
freedmen laborers and planters stating terms of employment, such as pay, clothing, and medical
care due the freed men; the part of the crop to be retained by him; and whether a plot for growing
subsistence crops was to be provided. (http://freedmensbureau.com/labor.htm) Working relations
between the landowner and the former slaves were tense. White planters tried immediately after
the war to hire white workers for the field work, but found them not to be good workers. White
workers would work one or two days and quit.
Fair wages seem to always be argued, white farmers did not want to pay for the work produced by
the black farmers. Thus, the Freedman s Bureau had to negotiate labor contracts for those former
slaves, both men and women, so that contracts and wages were fair. The Bureau encouraged former
major planters to rebuild their plantations and urged freed blacks to return to work for them, kept an
eye on contracts between the newly free laborers and planters, and pushed whites and blacks to
work together as employers and employees rather than as masters and slaves. (https://quizlet.com

Negative Impact of Tattoos
Tattoos have decorated bodies for centuries. From religious beliefs, to punishment, to adornment,
tattoos have reflected personal stories for each of the bodies it marks. In the modern era, tattoos
have become a form of art in which people use to express their individualities. Although one may
consider marking their bodies as a positive form of self expression, tattoos can have lasting
negative effects on one s physical, social, and professional lives.
Physically, getting a tattoo involves many risks. Even with the technology available in the 21st
century and advances made to improve safety, there are still many medical complications that can
result after one gets a tattoo. Some risks are minor, while some are more serious ... Show more

Depending on the person s professional line of work, a tattoo can make or break their career.
Some professions may require attire that exposes more skin than other occupations. The company
may want to ensure that tattoos are able to be covered in order to present that company s particular
image. These factors need to be considered by those people with tattoos that are active in the job
market.
When someone is seeking employment, it is important to create a positive first impression. This
impression should convince a prospective employer that his or her appearance is suitable for the
company s image. The first thing the interviewer sees is the candidate s physical appearance.
Unfortunately, if someone has a visible tattoo, he or she is most likely going to be viewed as
trashy in the conservative, professional world (Business Legal Reports, 2005). A survey conducted
by Vault (2007) reveals that 85% of respondents think tattoos impede one s chances of finding a job
(Business Legal Reports, 2007). Similarly, a survey conducted by the Employment Law Alliance
(2005) reveals that 39% of Americans should be able to deny employment based on tattoos
(Business Legal Reports, 2005). These survey results clearly show that the negative stigma
associated with tattoos can hurt a person s quest in securing future employment. Because of this
negative connotation, most tattooed persons face an immediate disadvantage the moment they
enter a job

Football Hooligans
Football hooligans.
Football has been an attractive sport around the world. Through this sport, many inhabitants have
denominated themselves as fans of a particular football team. These people support the players in
each match they have. Every football team has a group of fans that go to the stadium to encourage
them in the game, but also they attend there to enjoy the show. Nevertheless, not all the fans go to
see the matches since there are some people who belong to groups called hooligans. Those groups
are highly violent, and they do not mind killing other people to defend their team. Consequently,
citizens who belong to these violent groups should not be able to come back to the stadiums
because hooligans do not benefit the image of football, do not understand the meaning of football,
and do not respect the diversity of preferences. Violent hooligans have been damaging the image of
the football day to day. First of all, the hooligans affect the perception of football because most
members of violent hooligans are adolescents, and it makes people think that football promotes the
violence. According to a study performed by a web page called Monographs said that of every one
hundred members of hooligans, at least ninety are teenagers who are growing up with the belief
that whether they have to kill someone to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those groups damage the good image of football and make it seem as a violent sport, which is in
danger of losing popularity. They see this sport as a moment to fight and private other people to

team. If it is not as they want, people cannot use things that represent the like for a specific team, or
not only their belongings would be in danger, but also they could be causing their own death. Now,
do you still think that hooligans are just supporting their

Reflection Of The Woman Warrior
In 1976 Maxine Hong Kingston won the National Book Critics Circle Award for the best work
of non fiction for her book The Woman Warrior: Memories of a Girlhood among Ghosts, a novel
built up from a collection of stories that draw on from Chinese folklore and myth intertwined with
her own life s experiences and episodes from her and other female family members life. While
labelled as an autobiography, American readers enthusiastically welcomed it as work of fiction that
deals with the exotic, mysterious and unfathomable China. This illustrates the why and wherefores
of the many readings that this work has originated since its publication. The lack of adherence to

The Four Levels Of Training Evaluation Is Defined As A...
Kirkpatrick s Four Levels of training evaluation is defined as a technique for evaluating training
programs, created by Donald Kirkpatrick in 1959. The Kirkpatrick model is the worldwide
standard for evaluating the effectiveness of training. The four levels of this technique incorporate
assurance of how learners respond to the learningprocedure, the achievement of skillacquisition by
learners, the degree to which workplace behavior after the training demonstrates skill acquisition,

This evaluation technique is defined as a detailed study of a market or geographical area to
gather data on the attitudes, impressions, opinions, satisfaction level and etc. by targeting and
polling a section of the people. Surveys are low cost and also very effective as long as the
participant is unbiased. Surveys can be administered to the participants through a various
number of ways. The questionnaires can be simple and sent by email or through the Internet,
which is easily accessible. Online surveys have quickly become a popular way of gathering data
and conducing surveys. It is also extremely convenient and does not take up much time. The
surveys should have only relevant questions that reflect the training that was just conducted. It
should also be conducted right after the training when the trainees are still sure about what they
have experienced. If the survey is handed to them too late, the data collected could differ. Simple
questions should be asked with a yes or no option as well as a 1 to 10 rating scale. At the end of the
survey, there should be an open ended box where the trainees are able to freely write how they
feel about the training as well as what can be improved.

Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado
Introduction
Mesa Verde National Park, located in Montezuma County, Colorado, was established in 1906 by
President Theodore Roosevelt. This United States landmark was designated for the preservation
of several Puebloan archeological sites and the vast geologic history exhibited within the 52,485
acres of land occupied by Mesa Verde. The Ancestral Puebloans, or Mesa Verdeans, associated with
the archeological sites of Mesa Verde National Park, lived in the Mesa Verde region from the mid
sixth century to the end of the thirteenth century.[3]
Around 650 A.D., the Mesa Verdean peoples initiated construction of apartment style homes,
termed by Spanish explorers as pueblos. The Puebloan architecture is original in that it utilized the
local stone and mud deposits of the region to maintain the structural integrity of their burgeoning
developments. As this community evolved into the twelfth century, Mesa Verdeans further
integrated the geology of their environment into their lifestyles by building homes, known as cliff
dwellings, within the naturally formed alcoves of Mesa Verde. By the thirteenth century, the Mesa
Verdeans vacated this region due to severe droughts and subsequent social instability. Despite the
later abandonment of their cliff dwellings, it is clear that the geology of Mesa Verde National Park
impacted the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans significantly. The following sections provide detailed
information regarding the rock formations that make up the geological

Today, Toyota like other automotive companies has problem in their products.

Romans Bread And Games
For my Classics Day project, I worked with Bram to create a Latin themed trivia game inspired
by the modern day board game called Candyland. However, the Roman people did not have
sugar and therefore did not manufacture or consume the marshmallows, chocolate, and candy
canes depicted in the Candyland game. What the Romans did have, and love, was bread, so we
felt it would be appropriate replace candy with bread for the purpose of our game. This change is
even more fitting because of the well known phrase panem et circenses, meaning bread and
games, coined by Juvenal circa 100 A.D. in his poem Satire X. The phrase is intended to
illustrate Juvenal s contempt for the Roman public, who is so easily swayed to vote by cheap
food and entertainment. In Roman society, providing bread and games became one of the most
effective ways to rise to power. In 140 B.C., this policy had been officially put into place with the
passage of the grain dole, or Cura Annonae ( care for the grain supply ). Though a source of
political contention for many years to follow, distributing the grain supply became an important
duty for the Roman Aedile.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 168 B.C., the first guild of bakers ( Collegium Pistorum ) was formed, and within 150 years
there existed more than three hundred specialist pastry chefs in rome. The guild was regarded
so highly that it was even given its own seat in the Roman Senate. Lentaculum loaves were
round, flat, and made of a cereal grain similar to wheat flour, while oyster bread was made to be
eaten with oysters, to name just two examples of Roman bread. The wealthy could make their
breads richer by adding milk, eggs, and butter, but these ingredients were hard to come by for the
poorer people of Rome. Bread making was also important to the Greeks, where intense rivalries
developed between cities regarding which could produce the best

White Heron Literary Analysis
In Sarah Orne Jewett, White Heron , I found it revealing that in the end, Sylvia despite finding the
white heron nest, she doesn t tell the hunter. When Sylvia and the hunter are initially searching for
the nest, Sylvia ... watched the young man with loving admiration and she had never seen anybody
so charming and delightful. Like many love stricken individuals, they would do many things for
their target of affection, so one would assume that Sylvia would gladly and happily tell the hunter
where the location of the heron s nest is after finding it. However, at the end of story, Sylvia doesn
t tell the man. I found this detail to be revealing to the story s meaning of being connected to nature
and preserving its beauty despite temptation

Why Bother By Michael Pollan Analysis
In Michael Pollan s article Why Bother? he discusses how climate change is a serious threat to
humanity and needs to be addressed immediately. Pollan begins to discuss possible solutions but
also realizes that these solutions may not be easily achieved. There is no way to eliminate people
who make a conscious effort to help the advancement of climate change, but it is still important for
others to attempt to make changes to help save the environment. The famous economist, Adam
Smith, promoted the idea the division of labor has given us many of the blessings of civilization
and about the role the invisible hand plays in the supply and demand of the production of goods.
Although these goods are produced under specialization, the production of a good by a single entity
in order to promote efficiency, there is still the problem of human want for an unlimited amount of
commodities while still taking into account scarcity.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

car ownership is where ours was back in 1918), is eager to swallow every bite of meat I forswear
and who s positively itching to replace every last pound of CO2 I m struggling no longer to
emit. This is the prime problem that Pollan states, because what are the efforts of one person
when another, who is half across the world, decides to tear down this effort? Though stated in the
article going green is like a chain reaction, If you do bother, you will set an example for other
people. If enough other people bother, each one influencing yet another in a chain reaction of
behavioral change, markets for all manner of green products and alternative technologies will

  • 3. Air Pollution 4.4. DATAThe US air emission data employed in this study is obtained from the US Environmental Protection Agency s national emission inventory (USEPA 2006; 2009), covering all anthropogenic emissions of six air pollutants (SO2, PM2.5, PM10, NOx, VOC, and NH3) in the 48 states of the US (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). The gross external damage (GED) is estimated by Muller et al. (2011). The 2002 industry level GEDs are identified by a six digit industry code from the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). In total, there are about 840 NAICS industries included. To account for transferred values of goods and services through trade, we employ Input Output Accounts (make and use tables) data from the US Bureau of Economic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to link emissions and damages to the IO data, we match industries in six digit NAICS code to industries in six digit IO code, and it is no problem for most cases. However, there are two exceptional cases. One exceptional case is that for 20 IO industries, we cannot find the matched NAICS industries. That is, there is no information on damages in the 20 IO industries. Thus, in the baseline model, we leave damages in the 20 industries equal to zero. Another exceptional case is that with regard to the agricultural industries and construction industries, damage data are in a more aggregated level. Therefore, disaggregating GEDs are necessary with respect to those industries. In the baseline model we allocate GEDs in agricultural and construction industries proportionally to value added. The procedures to handle these two exceptional cases are explained in Appendix B. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses are carried out in Section 4.6 to assess changes of results if different approaches are used to handle these issues. For the simplicity of results presentation and results discussion, we further aggregate the estimated results into 42 sectors according to the IO code. Hereafter, we refer to the 6 digit IO industries as industries , and refer to the 42 aggregated IO sectors as sectors . In addition, according to the sectoral characteristic, the 42 sectors can be allocated into three broad aggregates: the primary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tallerman Co Pty Ltd v Nathan s Merchandise (Vic) Pty Ltd (1957) 98 CLR 93 PART I Summary of Facts The dispute occurred in Victoria between a registered company, Tallerman Co Pty Ltd ( the plaintiff ) and an incorporated company, Nathan s Merchandise Pty Ltd. ( the defendant), where both parties operated their business. Two previous binding contracts (orders No. 58 and No. M57) were made in communications on 14th May 1951 and 2nd August 1951 respectively, each for the sale by the plaintiff to the defendant of 1,000,000 Hungarian .22 bullets. A consignment of 1,800,000 bullets for the above orders was dispatched from Sydney to the defendant by rail on the 12th February 1952 and was received by a carrier employed by the defendant in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kitto J. verified that whether or not an existing contract is considered to have been rescinded, depends on the intention of the parties involved. When examining the two critical correspondences of 21st March 1952/ June 4th 1952, it was held that no intention by the defendant to discharge the previous 1951 contracts was found; the letters of offer and acceptance did not constitute a new and substituted contract, and hence all conditions of the earlier contracts were to be binding. Assuming that the contracts is of variation, the final substantial issue to be anlaysed was whether the Plaintiff s acceptance of the original contracts was effective for the Defendant to be in breach of its terms. Decision The appeal failed. As the plaintiff voluntarily confined itself to the two correspondences and thus chose not to sue in Victoria, these two letters, under New South Wales law, did not amount to a new contract, and the plaintiff was not protected by the offer and acceptance rule. The majority embraced the view that the result was tried on a conventional basis and would have been judged differently if the Plaintiff had not demanded the case to be determined in Sydney. • 5. Social Identity In Lord Of The Flies Individuals have the basic need to belong and feel connected with the social world, which stimulates friendship and peer group formation (Ellis Zarbatany, 2007). Social identity theory suggests that our self identification is shaped by social context and based on our identification with the group, rather than individual traits (Hornsey, 2008). Moreover, self categorization theory allows us to construct group identification, give us social information to categorize in group and out group members, and ensure group processing (Hornsey, 2008). As children approach to adolescent, the relationship with peer group becomes the primary form of socialization; therefore, the interaction with peers emphasizes the role of social support, friendship, social... Therefore, children are able to self select their own social group and construct their social identity through exploring all possible group at very young age of life (Harris, 1995). On the other hand, children with different ages hold different values when defining their own social groups (Ellis Zarbatany, 2007). Specifically, young children define groups on the basis of common actives and social behavior, whereas older adolescents emphasize on the role of social comparison, motivates to increase one s self esteem, and maintain a positive self evaluation through group processing (Harris, 1995). Evidently, the boys select their own social groups that fit them the most based on observable characteristics, interests, and traits (Golding, 1962). Field Trip Reflection Reflection Paper I went to Starbucks for my Field Trip and prior to this trip, I made a list of things that I would like to particularly observe relating to American culture/values. Some ideas included interactions between American people, gender differences as well as employees attitude. I wanted to examine the ways in which Americans behave around people or their behavior towards other people. Before the field trip, I had a few thoughts/assumptions/beliefs about Americans such as I thought Americans were more hostile and reserved, they usually keep to themselves. This showed me equality in society such as how men treat women with care and as well as goodness of humanity. This could also be form of norm in society in American values as a gentlemen courtesy and politeness. It is our expected perception of masculinity what society deems as appropriate behavior for a man . The attitudes of the employees particularly put a smile on my face. The initial perceptions we make solely on someone s outward appearances are out of our control, as it is a natural connection our brain makes between presentation and character. Though we cannot control what we instinctually comprehend, keeping an open mind is important, especially when meeting someone new. Over the years of tormenting those who reside in the Opera house, he earns the reputation of opera ghost due to his unseen and spectral nature. It is shown in numerous occasions that even referring to him as opera ghost is somewhat taboo. In the Creatures case, a couple specific instances stand out which fuel his desire for revenge. When he reveals himself to the De Lacey family, he is attacked and forced to flee for his own safety as well as theirs. He soon returns, only to find the cottage empty. • 10. Early Life As A Social Determinant Of Health Early life as a social determinant of health has the potential to impact both a person s health and wellbeing. Social and economic disadvantage, belonging to a marginalised population, access to adequate nutrition, educational attainment and exposure to adverse experiences all contribute to an individual s functional healthinto midlife and old life age. Those children who suffer socioeconomic disadvantages have earlier onset and faster progression of disease, resulting in higher morbidity and earlier mortality (Agahi, Shaw, Fars, 2014). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Child health inequalities were first explored in the 19th century, with regards to the differences in infant mortality rates within the social classes (Woolfenden et al., 2013). Early childhood development as a social determinant is now described as the factors and environments that can influence development and lifelong health and wellbeing (Maggi et al., 2010). These factors interact with one another and include; social interactions, physical environment, living conditions, learning environments and socio political context (Maggi et al., 2010). The societal influences on early life are determined by a variety of factors, ranging from access to survival necessities to income inequality (Maggi et al., 2010). Developing countries are more likely to be impacted by war, slavery, discrimination, disease, and a lack of water and sanitation facilities (Maggi et al., 2010). Developed countries face issues around childhood exposure to poverty and the inability for some to access the services needed for ideal health and wellbeing (Maggi et al., 2010). Although the issues faced between countries are immensely different, the concerns for one child are no less important than the concerns for another (Maggi et al., 2010). Rhetorical Devices Used In A Modest Proposal In any piece of literature, consideration of the audience is key in assuring that not only the overall theme, but also the desired reaction to the work is attained. In terms of analysis, identifying the audience may lead to greater insight, as depending on individual traits and beliefs, responses can vary wildly from one group of people to the next, and in identifying the audienceand their respective feedback, one can hone in on the author s intended purpose of the work and judge whether or not the work in itself is effective in communicating its point. In Jonathan Swift s controversial essay A Modest Proposal, he achieves this successful conveyance by utilizing careful appeals such as logos, ethos, and pathos in a prolific manner and in such a way so as to shock his audience, in this case, the land owning English elite, and as such, A Modest Proposal is an effective essay as it... With Ireland s population being mostly Catholic, and Swift introducing the solution of greatly [lessening] the number of Papists (635) through his proposal, he seems to possess an English mindset in the form of a sort of condescending attitude towards the Irish populace. Although this love was more common during the time of the Symposium, there are similar types of relationships still occurring. Not all of these modern relationships include sex as the old relationships did, but they still have the exchange of virtue and wisdom that the past relationships did. • 20. The Positives Of Colonialism World Issues: Personal Opinion Essay The Positives of Colonialism: Colonialism has been portrayed as leaving negative impacts on countries, however many do not take into consideration the positives effects of colonization. The people of Africa established a mainstream religion to follow (Christianity), including new laws and a new political system. Countries bonded with one another and signed agreements to prevent conflict between countries. It has benefited many people that were illiterate; schools and education were given importance by the British, whether it was education in India or Africa all of them were given universal education. Colonization has brought many benefits to countries like Africa, Pakistan and India. Each country was given the opportunity to shape themselves, to be able to stand up on their own with British aid. Colonialism moulded the countries to what they are, and in return the British requested much less than the countries it supported. With the help of the British, countries managed to stabilize their justice systems, boost their economy, and introduce a new religion. People misunderstood the British because of the power they had and assumed that if they were to take over their land, they would lose all control over their country. Pascal Why it is wrong to Believe Anything upon Insufficient Evidence Name Institution Introduction The fact that one can believe in something or a statement is based on, among other factors, the available evidence. A range of philosophers have written widely on this topic. Clifford in his Influential essay The Ethics of Belief defends the contention that it is always wrong for any human being to believe anything if there is insufficient evidence. He uses two stories to illustrate wrong ways through which people arrive at beliefs. William James, however, disapproves Clifford. Pascal has a different view on belief formation where he argues that reasons for believing and failing to believe in God are indecisive. The three philosophers have varied views on how beliefs are formed. This essay discusses the reasons why Clifford made the above conclusion, the position taken by James in his opposition and how the argument relates to Pascal s Wager. In Clifford s first section of his essay, he narrates two stories as an illustration of how beliefs are arrived at. His first story is that of the ship owner who sends an immigration ship out to sea. The ship owner had a dream where he saw the ship sink and as a result, doubts whether the ship is fit to sail safely in the sea. • 24. The Character Analysis Of Shameless As A Dramatic Comedy Have you ever wanted to watch a dramatic comedy, but could never find the one ? I would highly recommend Shameless for anyone one who is having trouble finding the one . There are many television shows that can keep anyone entertained, but Shameless has all the right factors that are needed to be a great dramatic comedy. Shameless is a good dramatic comedy because the characters and situations are relatable to real life, the TV show has moral teachings, and it s very suspenseful. One of the things that makes Shameless such a great dramatic comedy is how the characters and situations are so relatable to real life. It s important for a TV show to make the audience feel like they re connected to the characters as they deal with their situations in each episode. There is evidence in every season that shows the relativity between the characters and real life situations. For example, in season 6, episode 1; Frank is currently dealing with losing a loved one, while both daughters, Fiona and Debbie are making decisions about their pregnancy. Fiona begs for her little sister to do adoption or abortion. Debbie doesn t quite understand how Knue 2 having a child while being fourteen, can ruin a lot of great opportunities later. Fiona chooses to have an abortion since she cannot make enough money to support herself or all her siblings. In addition to relatable characters and situations, Shameless also offers moral teachings. How does a dramatic comedy offer moral teachings? Shameless provides many examples on how drug and alcohol abuse affects a family home. There is also evidence on how Shameless provides that. In season 4, episode 5; Fiona celebrates something good that has happened, but not in a correct way. She decides to buy drugs, and leave them out where her little brother, Liam, can get his hands on causing him to overdose. Fiona then faces the consequences on the abuse of drugs, and the toll it can have on a family. These problems are rooted in the battle between the need to create some false image of success and the need for truth which is the struggle that exists in every character of this film (except Jeff Goldbloom). To show this Robert Altman takes us through Nashville s Country Music using political commentary, music and realistically portrayed dialogue to tell the story. The nature of dialogue itself is solely for creating and upholding the self image of the Nashville Star weather you are one or not. The conversations never get passed the surface issues, and no one ever speaks their mind unless it s safe. But, the reality of each character is very real and deep due to the way the dialogue was set up. Most of the people were frivolous so in order to add some depth and reveal their true character Altman had to make the dialogue as realistic as possible. The dialogue seemed almost unrehearsed or not planned at all which gives it its reality. The most odious example of this is when the Hal Walker representative is arguing about the political sign with Barbra Gene s husband at Centennial Park. He slips on his line in the heat of the argument. I don t know if this was intentional or not, but I think they chose to keep it in the movie because it seemed to be more true to reality than just a smooth flowing argument that would normally be in a movie. The little slip gave way, for the first time, a vulnerable side to the Hal Walker rep or even politics for that matter. There is also another form of acousmatic, and it is the subtle comments of the crowd. The line that gracefully falls slips through the silencer s fingers. The light glints off the wires as the touch ground, silently, like falling snow (Yancey 298). Human bias is a huge factor contributing to the way people think. Every day, humans are influenced by the people around them which alter individual thoughts. Society is open to assistance when making decisions because of the fear that they are wrong or different. This is where racism appears and becomes a problem just because of the impact people have on each other. The most effective way to defeat fear is by acknowledging it, and in doing so humans learn to fight through their fear which eventually results in diminishment. The world would become a more delightful, friendly place where people think and act on their own. Racism would not be an issue in society if people fixed a major flaw of not thinking for themselves. • 35. Sickle Cell Anemia ( Sca ) Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited blood disease which causes normal, round, healthy red blood cells to transform into sickle shaped cells. Normal red blood cells are flexible and can easily pass through capillaries to bring oxygen to different parts of the body. However, sickle cells are fragile, and can easily die, leading to anemia (red blood celldeficiency). SCA can also cause blood vessel occlusion (blockage of blood vessels), tissue infarctions (death due to lack of oxygen), bone, joint, and abdominal pain, yellow eyes and skin, pale skin, delayed growth, increased risk of infections, and damage to organs. The disease is passed on by autosomal recessive inheritance, which means both parents of a child must have the defective gene for the child to be affected. If only one gene is inherited, the victim becomes a carrier of the sickle cell trait, producing only some sickle cells with little or no symptoms. This means two people with the trait have a 25% chance of having a baby with sickle cell disease, 25% chance of them having no defects, and 50% chance of the baby becoming a carrier as well. When the gene is inherited, it mutates the beta (ОІ) globin gene in chromosome 11, changing the hemoglobins produced using instructions from the gene from a healthy hemoglobin A (Hb A) to a mutated hemoglobin S (Hb S). Many tests can be done to check for sickle cell disease, the most common being an ordinary blood test, where the blood is examined for hemoglobin S. If the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Deforestation Of Latin American Forest Deforestation presents in an abundance of ways, including fires, clear cutting for agriculture, ranching and development, unsustainable logging for timber, and degradation due to climate change. The foremost reason of deforestation in Latin America is the requirement for food, fuel, shelter, and foreign exchange. Year on year, a space of tropical forest the size of Great Britain is converted from an area equal to the size of Europe. Ever since 1950, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), half of the world s forests have disappeared. Latin America has lost 37 percent of its tropical forests, says the FAO. As more and more of Latin American forest are degraded, more and more detrimental effects are being seen. Deforestation is changing a number of resources for tribal groups, altering their way of life, temperatures are increasing at a dangerous rate because of a buildup of carbon dioxidein the atmosphere, habitats and species such as plants and wildlife are being annexed due to the destructive effects of deforestation. Deforestation is inarguably helpful to supplying money to countries that sell the products from the forest, but huge wealth being generated from the forests comes with large scale environmental and social costs. The local residences are not benefitting and the funds are being siphoned out of the region. • 38. Achilles Is The First Tragic Hero THESIS STATEMENT Euripides Achilles is seen as the first tragic hero because he has all the criteria of a tragic hero high social position, undergoes reversal of fortune, and a tragic flaw but he does not have a tragic downfall. PURPOSE STATEMENT Through critical essays, research, and reading The Iliad , it can be perceived that Achilles is the first tragic hero in dramatic history. INTRODUCTION Throughout The Iliad, it is debated whether Achilles is the tragic hero or Hector. Looking at the lifestyle of Achilles, it is clear that he is the prototype of the tragic hero. According to Ian Johnston, This development is unique to [Achilles] in the poem and is close enough to what tragic heroes go through to enable us to say that he enters the realm of tragic experience (Johnston). Achilles shatters the belief that Hector is not the first hero when the story told in Euripides The Iliad showed many more of the characteristics of the tragic hero in Achilles that we all know today. The criteria of the tragic hero aligns perfectly with Achilles since he has a tragic flaw, which is his intense and unquenchable rage, also he is in a high social position, because he is an invulnerable general and demi god. He also experiences a reversal of fortune through his faults and crimes. He would be considered the perfect tragic hero if he only had a tragic downfall, which he does not since The Iliad ends at the funeral of Hector. AN UNCONTROLLABLE FLAW Achilles tragic flaw is ... Pros And Cons Of Labor Landowners and former slaves were often engaged in labor contracts, often these relationships were contentious and needed intervention by the Freedman s Bureau (the contract was created and supported by the federal government written by the Freedman s Bureau.) Agreements between freedmen laborers and planters stating terms of employment, such as pay, clothing, and medical care due the freed men; the part of the crop to be retained by him; and whether a plot for growing subsistence crops was to be provided. (http://freedmensbureau.com/labor.htm) Working relations between the landowner and the former slaves were tense. White planters tried immediately after the war to hire white workers for the field work, but found them not to be good workers. White workers would work one or two days and quit. Fair wages seem to always be argued, white farmers did not want to pay for the work produced by the black farmers. Thus, the Freedman s Bureau had to negotiate labor contracts for those former slaves, both men and women, so that contracts and wages were fair. The Bureau encouraged former major planters to rebuild their plantations and urged freed blacks to return to work for them, kept an eye on contracts between the newly free laborers and planters, and pushed whites and blacks to work together as employers and employees rather than as masters and slaves. These factors need to be considered by those people with tattoos that are active in the job market. When someone is seeking employment, it is important to create a positive first impression. This impression should convince a prospective employer that his or her appearance is suitable for the company s image. The first thing the interviewer sees is the candidate s physical appearance. Unfortunately, if someone has a visible tattoo, he or she is most likely going to be viewed as trashy in the conservative, professional world (Business Legal Reports, 2005). This United States landmark was designated for the preservation of several Puebloan archeological sites and the vast geologic history exhibited within the 52,485 acres of land occupied by Mesa Verde. The Ancestral Puebloans, or Mesa Verdeans, associated with the archeological sites of Mesa Verde National Park, lived in the Mesa Verde region from the mid sixth century to the end of the thirteenth century.[3] Around 650 A.D., the Mesa Verdean peoples initiated construction of apartment style homes, termed by Spanish explorers as pueblos. The Puebloan architecture is original in that it utilized the local stone and mud deposits of the region to maintain the structural integrity of their burgeoning developments. As this community evolved into the twelfth century, Mesa Verdeans further integrated the geology of their environment into their lifestyles by building homes, known as cliff dwellings, within the naturally formed alcoves of Mesa Verde. By the thirteenth century, the Mesa Verdeans vacated this region due to severe droughts and subsequent social instability. Despite the later abandonment of their cliff dwellings, it is clear that the geology of Mesa Verde National Park impacted the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans significantly. • 47. Romans Bread And Games For my Classics Day project, I worked with Bram to create a Latin themed trivia game inspired by the modern day board game called Candyland. However, the Roman people did not have sugar and therefore did not manufacture or consume the marshmallows, chocolate, and candy canes depicted in the Candyland game. What the Romans did have, and love, was bread, so we felt it would be appropriate replace candy with bread for the purpose of our game. This change is even more fitting because of the well known phrase panem et circenses, meaning bread and games, coined by Juvenal circa 100 A.D. in his poem Satire X. The phrase is intended to illustrate Juvenal s contempt for the Roman public, who is so easily swayed to vote by cheap food and entertainment. In Roman society, providing bread and games became one of the most effective ways to rise to power. In 140 B.C., this policy had been officially put into place with the passage of the grain dole, or Cura Annonae ( care for the grain supply ).
