Genre
As a group we decided to look into the
possibility of doing a music video with a ‘rap’
genre. This was because, each individual
member of our group enjoyed that genre of
music and had a lot of knowledge about it. After
thorough research, through looking at music
videos from different rap artists, we narrowed
the options down to two songs. A song from an
American artist, 50 Cent – In Da Club and a song
from an English artist, Wretch 32 – Traktor.
50 Cent – In Da Club
Out of the two videos it was quite clear that this music video had a far higher budget.
This was clearly portrayed through the intricate movement and angles of shots. The
mise-en-scene, including locations and outfits, were also reflective of the high budget
music video. Naturally, due to the low budget we have, these issues would prove very
difficult to overcome. However, we still did not feel it would be impossible and we
were also very intrigued by other elements of the music video. One of them elements
was the story behind the music video. From the video you could tell that the artist was
recovering from some form of struggle. This was shown through his intense training in
the gym. After research we discovered that the reason behind his training in the gym
is because in real life he had been shot several times. There were also parts of the
music video in which two other rap artists, Dr Dre and Eminem, watched 50 Cent, as
though they were doctors, while he was in the gym training. During our research we
learned the reason behind that was because Dr Dre and Eminem had discovered 50
Cents rapping talent and it was his first single under their record label. The footage
shows 50 Cent as though he is an experiment, being tested by already existing artists
with prestigious reputations. We liked the idea of this storyline and felt that we would
be able to play around with it well in order to create a gripping music video.
Wretch 32 - Traktor
Although Traktor by Wretch 32 seemed to have a lower budget
compared to the 50 Cent music video, it still had some very difficult
shots that we would find challenging when trying to copy certain parts.
In this video it was more the lighting that was intricate. The location, in
a car park, we believed we could impersonate. However, from the
offset the lighting used would prove very challenging to compare with.
One thing we didn’t particularly like about the music video is the fact
that it didn’t really have a storyline, which is something we liked very
much about the 50 cent music video. Nevertheless, there were many
things from this video that made it very appealing. The mise-en-scene
was more appropriate for our budget, we would be able to film in a
local car park that is not often used. Also, there are not as many
characters in Traktor compared with In Da Club, this would make it
easier for us to organise a date that the characters can film. When
there are too many people, it is firstly hard to find all the characters
and secondly it is difficult to find a time they can all film.
Evaluation
In the end, after taking on board all the information
and thorough analysis we decided that if we were
to pick the rap theme that Traktor by Wretch 32
would be most appropriate for our coursework
task. This research has been really helpful in getting
closer to the final video we intend on doing. When
analysing two songs together it really helps to
shortlist the pro’s and con’s and make a realistic
judgment as to whether the music video is suitable
