Reflective Essay On Civil Service
My agency, the Bexar County Sheriff s Office, has Civil Service and, as such, there
are certain criteria that one must meet before I could promote. Anyone who passes
a few tests and does well on some Internal Review Boards is eligible for promotion.
Therefore, since I guessed better than the person sitting next to me did, I am
making major decisions that affect dozens of people directly and possibly hundreds
indirectly. The only training I received in supervision were the classes I took to
impress the Internal Review Board. The perils of Civil Service, perhaps. Additionally,
when I first made sergeantin 2011 there was no training program for the new
supervisors. Surprisingly, I rode with another sergeant for three days and then was on
