Colonies:
Both Germany and Italy were “new”countries
and had been left out of the scramble for colonies in the
19th century. They now wanted to compete with
Britain,France,Belgium and Holland.
Trade Rivalries:
Both Germany and Britain wanted to be
the greatest trading nations in the world.
Revenge:
France wanted revenge for its defeat in 1871
and also wanted to recover Alsace and Lorraine, the
territory it had lost during the Franco-Prussian War.

Alliances:
Two armed alliances were formed in Europe.
Germany and Britain competed to have the largest navy, while
Germany and France fought to have the most powerful army.
Murder of Austrian Prince:
The fuse that fired the explosive
: the murder of Austrian Prince Ferdinand in June 1914.He
was shot by a Bosnian student in Sarajevo, the capital of
Bosnia.
The Austrians accused the Serbian government of being
involved in the assassination and invaded.
Germany came to the aid of its ally, Austria. Russia helped its
ally, Serbia. Soon all of the other European powers were
involved in the conflict

RESPONSIBLE FOR WWII?
There is little doubt that the Treaty of
Versailles had a profound influence in
drawing Germany towards World War II. To
put it simply, many Germans found
the treaty an insult and a burden imposed
upon them. Germany had lost territory and
colonies.
