2. What is AIDS?
• AIDS, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is the
spectrum of condition infected by HIV (Human
Immunodeficiency Virus).
• A pandemic disease spread worldwide.
• Generally asymptomatic at the beginning phase of
infection as the incubation period of HIV virus is
very long.
• Mainly interferes our immune system.
• Its not the direct cause of death, but plays a great
role by destroying our body’s immune mechanism.

3. History of AIDS
• Originated from non-human primates in Central and West
Africa in 19th century or early 20th
• First seen on chimpanzees and old
monkeys
• Firstly diagnosed clinically in USA
in 1981
• In Nepal, it was diagnosed 7 year
later in 1988

4. What are its causes?
• Primary reason is unsafe sexual practices.
• Contaminated blood transfusion
• Hypodermic needles
• From child to mother
These are all the process of transmission of any body
fluids from a person to the other. So its transmitted
by bodily fluids.

5. Symptoms
• Early: Flue-like illness
• Later: larger lymph nodes
continuous fever
weight loss
infection of various disease
very weak immune system

6. Epidemiology
According to UNAID data of 2016:
35.7 million people are living with AIDS in world
1.8 million new cases of HIV positive were in year
2016
Death of 1.0 million people was caused only by
AIDS
In context of Nepal;
By the end of 2015, people living with HIV was 39,000
approximately.

7. Treatment and Prevention
• It currently has no cure or any effective
Vaccines but Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) is done by
people to slow down the effects.
• Also preventing patient from other infections can be a good step to
minimize the effects.
• But prevention is always better than cure.
 Safe sexual activity
 Use of sterilized needles and injections
 Avoiding birth from an infected mother is
better idea
 Checking the blood properly before transfusion

9. World AIDS Day
• It was first observed in 1988, December 1
• The Joint United Nations Programs on HIV/AIDS
(UNAIDS) became operational in 1996
• In 1997 UNAIDS created World AIDS Campaign to
focus on this pandemic disease not only a single day
but whole year
• Till date people all over the world celebrate World
AIDS Day on this date with different slogans and
themes trying to reduce its effect worldwide.

10. Lets Do Something!!!
As a responsible citizen, mainly as a health worker its
our time to think seriously about it.
Though people are being aware about AIDS and its
causes, there are still cases of stigma and
discrimination to HIV patients.
In this situation can we just watch and wait?
Isn’t it our responsibility to do something?
Cant we make people more aware and civilized to
prevent AIDS and also its effect?
