• Of the many theories and myths about the origin of HIV, the most likely
explanation is that HIV was introduced to humans from monkeys. A recent
study identified a subspecies of chimpanzees native to west equatorial
Africa as the original source of HIV-1, the virus responsible for the global
AIDS pandemic.
• The researchers believe that the virus crossed over from monkeys to
humans when hunters became exposed to infected blood. Monkeys can
carry a virus similar to HIV, known as SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus),
and there is strong evidence that HIV and SIV are closely related.

EXPANSION OF HIV & AIDS
2
Meaning of HIV
• HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, weakens your immune system by
destroying important cells that fight disease and infection.
• Over time, HIV can destroy so many of your T-cells or CD4 cells, a key part
of your immune system, that your body can’t fight infections and disease
anymore. When this happens, HIV infection can lead to AIDS.
3
• AIDS-Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome is caused by Human Immuno
Virus (HIV) which spreads mainly through sexual route and so this is one of
the sexually transmitted infection. This virus reduces resistance power in
the human body.
• AIDS is not inherited but acquired by the individual.
• It is acquired because of AIDS is an infectious disease caused by a virus &
is spread from person to person through a variety of routes.
• AIDS is not a disease but a state which destroys the defense system of the
body.
• It is a syndrome that weakens the body’s defense mechanism.

• The HIV epidemic has taught scientists, clinicians, public health officials,
and the public that new infectious agents can still emerge. The nation
must be prepared to deal with a fatal illness whose cause is initially
unknown but whose epidemiology suggests it is an infectious disease.
• The AIDS epidemic has also taught us another powerful and tragic lesson:
that the nation's blood supply—because it is derived from humans—is
highly vulnerable to contamination with an infectious agent. A nation's
blood supply is a unique, essential, life-giving resource. Whole blood and
many blood products are lifesaving for many people. As a whole, our
nation's system works effectively to supply the nation with necessary
blood and blood products and its quality control mechanisms check most
human safety threats.

The nation must be prepared to deal with a fatal illness whose cause is initially unknown but whose epidemiology suggests it is an infectious disease. • The AIDS epidemic has also taught us another powerful and tragic lesson: that the nation's blood supply—because it is derived from humans—is highly vulnerable to contamination with an infectious agent. A nation's blood supply is a unique, essential, life-giving resource. Whole blood and many blood products are lifesaving for many people. As a whole, our nation's system works effectively to supply the nation with necessary blood and blood products and its quality control mechanisms check most human safety threats. CONCLUSION 24
