Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

• The CountrySTAT system has been migrated to the FENIX
platform which is an internet-based system.
• Key benefits of the new CountrySTAT system :
– The system is now based on open source technology and
therefore there are no constraints related to software
licenses.
– It will be possible to distribute the tool without cost to FAO
partners and beneficiaries.
– Ease of use for existing CountrySTAT Administrators as the
work flow will remain unchanged.
– Improved functionalities, such as dynamic charts.
INTRODUCTION
4. • Other key benefits of the new CountrySTAT system :
– The new system has been pilot tested in 2 selected countries (Cameroon
and Kenya) in order to provide feedback from the country perspective
– The new system will be operational from 30 October 2012
– FENIX promotes and implements international standards to manage and
integrate data across national/international databases. These standards
include:
• FAOSTAT coding system
• Harmonized System Commodity Classification (HS) which is an internationally
standardized system of names and numbers for classifying traded products
developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO)
• Global Administrative Unit Layers (GAUL) which is a spatial database of the
administrative units for all the countries in the world
INTRODUCTION
5. • To assist Countries, CountrySTAT Regional Team and Partners to better understand:
– The functionalities of the new CountrySTAT System with cutting-edge open-source
technology FENIX
– The comprehensive process of data and metadata uploading with the new publishing
system
– The links and complementarity between FAOSTAT and CountrySTAT which use the same
platform FENIX
– The importance of the closely collaboration between relevant National Institutions through
meetings of the Technical Working Group in the following areas: Harmonization of data
between FAOSTAT Questionnaires and CountrySTAT, Correspondence table between
National and International Classifications
– E-Learning
– The utility of the dissemination of data on the supply and utilization of commodities for
the preparation of the Food Balance Sheets
• To discuss on the future development and improvements to the new CountrySTAT system
• To ensure better communication and increase the number of CountrySTAT System users
