Journal-level metrics
Metrics have become a fact of life in many - if not all - fields of research and scholarship. In an age of information abundance (often termed ‘information overload’), having a shorthand for the signals for where in the ocean of published literature to focus our limited attention has become increasingly important.
Research metrics are sometimes controversial, especially when in popular usage they become proxies for multidimensional concepts such as research quality or impact. Each metric may offer a different emphasis based on its underlying data source, method of calculation, or context of use. For this reason, Elsevier promotes the responsible use of research metrics encapsulated in two “golden rules”. Those are: always use both qualitative and quantitative input for decisions (i.e. expert opinion alongside metrics), and always use more than one research metric as the quantitative input. This second rule acknowledges that performance cannot be expressed by any single metric, as well as the fact that all metrics have specific strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, using multiple complementary metrics can help to provide a more complete picture and reflect different aspects of research productivity and impact in the final assessment. ( Elsevier)
The document provides guidance and an example for students to follow to evaluate sources for a research project on plagiarism and academic achievement. It includes questions for reflection on information literacy concepts. The assignment section instructs students to search a database for sources on their topic, select two magazine articles and two journal articles, and evaluate the best magazine and journal article based on relevance, purpose, validity, and scope/depth. The example shows a student who found an article in The Economist discussing plagiarism in China schools and an academic journal article studying reasons for student deception in classrooms. The student gave the journal article an A rating and determined it was the best source to answer their research question.
Compare & Contrast Using The Web To Discover Comparable Cases For News StoriesJason Yang
The document describes a system called Compare & Contrast that analyzes news stories and uses information extracted from them to find comparable cases on the web. It models news stories by identifying generic situation keywords and main entities. It then discovers comparable entities based on word context similarity and uses these entities to retrieve web pages about comparable cases. The system was evaluated on a collection of news stories that mentioned comparable cases, and users judged whether the web pages found contained relevant comparable information.
This document provides guidance on how to conduct systematic literature reviews. It discusses the typology of literature reviews, describing reviews that aim to describe, test, extend, or critique existing literature. Different review types include narrative reviews, textual narrative syntheses, metasummaries, and scoping reviews for descriptive reviews. The document outlines the methodology used in this study, including searching literature databases, screening for inclusion, assessing quality, extracting and analyzing data. It provides examples of literature reviews in planning that exemplify different review types. The goal is to help improve the rigor of literature reviews in the planning field.
Structure of a manuscript: Day 4 article_writing_noteAshok Pandey
The document provides guidance on presenting results in research papers. It discusses that the results section should:
1) Summarize the key findings from the study in a clear and concise manner without interpreting the results or providing unnecessary details.
2) Present results objectively using tables, figures and plain language while highlighting important findings.
3) Describe results in the past tense and follow best practices for displaying data through appropriate use of tables and figures.
This document provides guidance on evaluating different types of sources for research, including books, magazines, and websites. It outlines key criteria to consider for each source type, such as the author's expertise and potential biases, date of publication, accuracy of content, and whether the source is primary or secondary. For all source types, students are advised to critically examine the author's credentials and potential agenda, consider the reliability based on reviews or citations, and evaluate whether factual claims are supported and information is up-to-date. Web sources require additional scrutiny of authorship, hosting organization, and primary versus secondary nature of content. The document aims to help students distinguish high quality sources suitable for academic research.
This document provides instructions for conducting research. It outlines three main steps: getting ready, set, and go. The getting ready step involves choosing a topic, listing keywords, and searching the library catalog for background information. The set step is constructing an effective search strategy using keywords, related terms, Boolean operators, and databases. The go step is when the research is conducted by reading sources, taking notes, organizing ideas, writing drafts, and documenting sources using APA citation format.
1) Citation metrics have evolved over time from bibliometrics in the 1960s to more recent metrics like altmetrics and webometrics. They are used to assess the influence of published research.
2) Key citation metrics include the journal impact factor, h-index, and article-level metrics like citation counts and altmetrics. Data sources include Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar.
3) Citation indexing links cited and citing articles, allowing researchers to trace the development of ideas over time. Citation analysis helps understand why authors cite other works.

We present the Influence Flower, a new visual metaphor for the influence profile of academic entities, including people, projects, institutions, conferences, and journals. While many tools quantify influence, we aim to expose the flow of influence between entities. The Influence Flower is an ego-centric graph, with a query entity placed in the centre. The petals are styled to reflect the strength of influence to and from other entities of the same or different type. For example, one can break down the incoming and outgoing influ- ences of a research lab by research topics. The Influence Flower uses a recent snapshot of Microsoft Academic Graph, consisting of 212 million authors, their 176 million publications, and 1.2 billion citations. An interactive web app, Influence Map, is constructed around this central metaphor for searching and curating visualisa- tions. We also propose a visual comparison method that highlights change in influence patterns over time. We demonstrate through several case studies that the Influence Flower supports data-driven inquiries about the following: researchers’ careers over time; pa- per(s) and projects, including those with delayed recognition; the interdisciplinary profile of a research institution; and the shifting topical trends in conferences. We also use this tool on influence data beyond academic citations, by contrasting the academic and Twitter activities of a researcher.

Ontsnapping uit Lantin door verouderde beveiliging?Thierry Debels

Experimental research designs aim to test hypotheses by manipulating variables and observing the effects of the changes. There are different types of experimental designs such as pre-experimental, true experimental, and quasi-experimental designs which vary in how tightly they control variables and the strength of conclusions that can be drawn. The goal of experimental designs is to establish causal relationships between independent and dependent variables through control and random assignment.

Topic 6 DQ 1
Your manager was impressed with the quantitative data collection plan that you initiated over a year ago and has now asked you to delve more deeply into how to motivate employee performance. Now, your questions become those of how and why? To understand more about how to motivate your staff members, you determine that a qualitative methodology will be the best approach. What are appropriate sources of data for this type of research? Describe how you would document and organize your qualitative data for future analyses? Using the research literature, justify why this would be the best approach for data collection.
Note: Rather than providing insights into the topics of employee perceptions or employee retention, focus your discussion post on the research methodology, research design, and data collection process to resolve this applied research example.
Alicia - To understand more about how to motivate staff I think the best qualitative methods to use would be observations, case studies, and one-on-one interviews. Collecting data to understand staff motivation should come directly from the experiences of the staff themselves. The appropriate sources of data collection would be direct focus groups, case studies, and one-to-one interviews. What makes the research reliable is that the responses and feedback are given directly from the employees, which becomes a conglomerate piece of unbiased and authentic feedback, while still originating from staff members as individuals. A narrative inquiry could be used to delve deeper into employee performance. Staff motivation is important to explore and build upon because staff members are a valuable part of any organization. Greenberger, Maul, Walker, McClendon (2021) wrote that qualitative design focuses on storytelling through the lens of participant perspectives. this is crucial to the data collection aspect because the focus question is, "How are staff members motivated and why are staff members motivated?"

Greetings Dr. Stanley, it is important to put rewards programs in place to motivate employees to do well in the workplace and to increase morale/productive. Rewards programs also helps to promote respect from employees because of feeling appreciated due to getting recognition from staff for performing well. By using the qualitative methodology to make changes to motivate the employees first a survey needs to create and given to the staff that will give the staff the opportunity to give inputs and recommendations as to what will motivate and increase productivity. Second, one on one interviews with employees will give ...

The Kaleidoscope of Impact: same data, different perspectives, constantly cha...Kudos
Scholars, scientists, academic institutions, publishers and funders are all interested in impact. We have different roles and goals, and therefore different reasons for needing to understand impact; we are therefore asking different questions about impact, and those questions continue to evolve, much as the concept of impact itself is evolving. To answer our different questions, do we need different data, in separate silos, or are we looking at the same data, from different angles? This session gathered researcher, library, publisher and metrics provider perspectives to consider who has an interest in impact, what data they are interested in, how they use it, and how the situation is evolving as e.g. business models and technical infrastructures shift.

Data Analysis Techniques
In order to make decisions about the value of any research study for practice, it is important to understand the general processes involved in analyzing research data. By now, you have examined enough research studies to be aware that there are some common ways that data are reported and summarized in research studies. For example, the sample is often described by numbers of participants and by certain characteristics of those participants that help us determine how representative the sample is of a population. The information about the sample is commonly reported in tables and graphs, making use of frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, and dispersion. Information about the variables (or concepts) of interest when quantified are also reported in similar manner.
Although the actual data analysis takes place after data have been collected, from the initial planning of a research study, the researcher needs to have an awareness of the types of questions that can be answered by particular data analysis techniques.
For this Discussion, review the case study entitled "Social Work Research: Measuring Group Success." Consider the data analysis described in that case. Recall the information presented in the earlier chapters of your text about formulating research questions to inform a hypotheses or open-ended exploration of an issue.

Develop a 3–4 page research paper based on a selected case study related to reproductive choices. Since the processes of reproduction and birth represent one of the potential biological outcomes of heterosexual activity, it is important to examine the biological foundations of human sexuality. This includes knowledge of fertilization and early development, including some of the most recent findings. There is more than a litany of birth control methods; this assessment offers a sound basis for understanding the issues to be weighed in personal decision making about contraception and abortion, which continue to generate debate and controversy.

The document summarizes a webinar on altmetrics presented by altmetric.com, Science-Metrix, and Elsevier Labs. Altmetrics measure the broader impact of scholarly works through social media mentions, downloads, views, and saves. They provide new perspectives on the societal and academic impact of research beyond traditional metrics like citations. However, altmetrics are still in early stages and have limitations like disciplinary biases since some fields are more active on social media than others. More research is needed to better understand what altmetrics represent and how they can most useful complement traditional metrics.
Identify the types of graphsand statistics that areapproprMalikPinckney86
This chapter introduces descriptive and inferential statistics that are commonly used in social research. Descriptive statistics describe the distribution of and relationships among variables, and include frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and variation, graphs, and reliability tests. Inferential statistics estimate the degree of confidence in generalizing sample results to the population by considering concepts like confidence intervals. The chapter uses data from a study of delinquency causes among high school students to demonstrate statistical techniques.
