Journal-level metrics
Metrics have become a fact of life in many - if not all - fields of research and scholarship. In an age of information abundance (often termed ‘information overload’), having a shorthand for the signals for where in the ocean of published literature to focus our limited attention has become increasingly important.
Research metrics are sometimes controversial, especially when in popular usage they become proxies for multidimensional concepts such as research quality or impact. Each metric may offer a different emphasis based on its underlying data source, method of calculation, or context of use. For this reason, Elsevier promotes the responsible use of research metrics encapsulated in two “golden rules”. Those are: always use both qualitative and quantitative input for decisions (i.e. expert opinion alongside metrics), and always use more than one research metric as the quantitative input. This second rule acknowledges that performance cannot be expressed by any single metric, as well as the fact that all metrics have specific strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, using multiple complementary metrics can help to provide a more complete picture and reflect different aspects of research productivity and impact in the final assessment. ( Elsevier)

This may be an article about a community health assessment or about assessing the special needs of a population afflicted with a particular ailment. Title Page
The primary goal of a title should be to summarize the main idea(s) of your paper simply and clearly. The title should be positioned in the upper half of the page and centered. Do not bold, underline, or italicize the title.

You will write your own abstract for the article, using the author's abstract as a model. You are to write an original abstract (short article summary) of no more than 100 words. Include your first name, middle initial(s), and last name. Omit all titles (e.g. Dr., Professor) and degrees (e.g. MA, PhD, EdD), if applicable. Developing a Proposal
Unit 4 focuses on developing your topic for your final report and conducting some preliminary research for your final project. Your reading for this unit (Chs. 15, 17 and Appendix C ) cover how to research and write proposals, as well as how to cite your work in a business report. Make sure to review these chapters carefully as you prepare your discussion and assignment for this unit.
What are Proposals?
A proposal is a persuasive genre in which a writer convinces an audience to accept or approve some course of action. As your book says, “proposals argue for work that needs to be done” (552).
In business contexts, a proposal might outline a new policy and request implementation or request money to fund a special project. For our purposes, your proposal will focus on seeking approval for your topic for your final business report.
According to Ch. 17, good business proposals answer the following questions:
· What problem are you going to solve or what opportunity do you hope to fill?
· Why does the problem need to be solved now or the opportunity explored immediately?
· How are you going to solve it?
· Can you do the work?
· Why should you be the one to do it?
· When will you complete the work?
· How much will you charge?
· What exactly will you provide for us?
For our purpose in this class, we are not going to worry about the questions about timelines, qualifications, or fees, as our timeline is already set, everyone has to do the report, and you will be writing your report for experience and learning, rather than money. However, be mindful that in a real world situation, all of these questions may be important to address.
Defining a Problem to Explore in your Proposal and Report:
According to Ch. 15, a good problem to explore for a business report should use the following guidelines:
· The problem is real, significant enough to be worth solving, and narrow but challenging
· The audience is also real and has the power to make decisions based on your report
· The evidence (e.g. data, facts, sources) is sufficient to show the importance of the problem and to prove that your recommendations will solve the problem.
When writing your proposal, use the advice in Chapter 15 about writing a purpose statement and review the example on pg. 492.
How to Conduct Research:
There is a wide range of research available to you that could be used to develop your report.
For example, you may find any or all of these types useful in a business report:
· Newspaper articles (For example, The Washington Post)
· Articles in popular magazines or non-fiction books (for example, Newsweek)

Brainstormingconceptmaps
Brainstorming is an open-ended approach to exploring a topic by generating many ideas and building off each other's thoughts. Concept mapping takes brainstorming further by visually organizing the relationships between key concepts, with the central topic or theme in the center and related sub-topics branching out. There are different types of concept maps like spider maps that radiate from the center and hierarchical maps that arrange information in descending order of importance. Both brainstorming and concept mapping can help reflect on a topic and identify what is known and unknown.
Topics thesis statements
This document provides guidance on developing a thesis statement or research question for a writing assignment. It explains that instructors may provide topics or allow students to choose their own. For instructor-provided topics, it is important to stay within the requirements. Good topics are researchable and of interest to the student. What is federated searching? Where is the listing for databases on your libraryÊs website? How do you get an MLA citation for an article from a particular database? What are the differences between a good magazine article and a good journal article? How does the reputation of the publisher and the peer-review process affect the validity of a journal article? Assignment Open your research journal; take your research question from Chapter 2, and enter it in the Database Search and Item Evaluation Worksheet (Figures 6.6 and 6.7). Record the name of the database you are searching, and the number of results found in your successful search statement that retrieved between 20 and 80 results. You may have to adjust your search to find an appropriate number of items. Find two full-text magazine articles and two full-text journal articles that you would consider using in your research on your topic. You cannot evaluate an article unless it is full text. Mark the four items you are going to use, and then use the databaseÊs citation feature to generate a bibliography of the items. Copy and paste this bibliography into your paper. Choose the magazine article and the journal article that you think are the best and evaluate both of them using the three factors. - 3. 104 Concise Guide to Information Literacy Evaluation of Best Journal Article Relevance: This article is exactly what I was looking for. It talks about why students plagiarize. Purpose: Scope and Depth This article is pretty narrowly focused, but it has a lot of depth on my topic. Style This is a research article that reports results of a study. Its purpose is to inform and present facts. Validity: Timeliness This is the most current article I found. The information is very up-to-date. Authority The authors are all PhD and work at different universities in departments of communications. They have written many articles on related topics, but nothing else on plagiarism. This should not be a problem because of their publishing track record. Accuracy The article has 21 citations to scholarly journals and books with dates ranging from 1989 to 2014. Most of the sources are current. This looks like very good research. Grade: A Best Article and Why You Choose It: The journal article is the best. It is really relevant to my topic, has lots of information and depth, and is a very valid information source. The popular magazine article does not have any depth, and shows that plagiarism and cheating are a problem, but it only hints at why it’s a problem. The journal article tells what students expect to get by cheating, and why it is important to them. Figure 6.6: (Continued)
