Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister of India for 15 years, the longest of any woman worldwide. Though literacy rates are increasing, rural girls still receive less education than boys. Women face challenges including low rates of property ownership, acid attacks, dowry-related deaths, sex-selective abortion, domestic violence, trafficking, sexual harassment, and high-profile rape cases that have received significant public attention but seen little legal justice. Surveys consistently find that gender inequality and sexual violence remain serious problems facing women in India.
